Actually, there are Sensors in the Doors to the carriage which count How many people entered the car, there are no sensors in the seats to my Knowledge
Nice Video and a verry scenic route for sure. You are not going over the Gotthard Pass however. Yes, its the Gotthard Mountain Railway but the Pass would actually take you way higher up and can only be passed via the road.
I hope the views made up for not being able to go though that neat base tunnel! From a swiss perspective, it is a bit embarrasing, having our quasi greatest achievement in infrastrucure just being blocked like that. Accidents happen, I guess.

As you already note, it's exactly one hour later than if it had gone through the base tunnel. Yes that's for scheduling purposes, but it also basically is what the tunnel saves in time.
Thank you Jonny for an extremely well filmed video, extremely well presented. September 2nd is the target date for the resumption of regular Taktfahrplan trains through the base tunnel. So from then on people wanting to travel the 'panoramastrecke' will once again need to catch the SOB operated IR trains which start from Locarno and proceed 'semifast' over the panoramastrecke. At Fluelen these trains connect with the boats which in summer operate hourly the whole length of the lake. Yes, those boats are part of the Taktfahrplan, as are the buses we saw in the bus station at Arth-Goldau! And both boats and buses are free to holders of the fabulous Swiss Travel Pass (as is the Lugano Stazione funicular).
I have more often travelled from Zürich to Ticino mostly to Locarno on Lago Maggiore which we enjoy plus from Locarno you can take the F.A.R.T. to Domodossola via the Centivalli on a metre gauge light rail service From Domodossola you go to Brig in Switzerland then we returned to our base in Ticino. The rise to Göschenen - which connects to Andermatt on a rack railway to the side of the station is fantastic.

So you got the tanoy saying in FOUR languages about the wonderful sights and not being able to see anything. I just started to laugh as it was surreal!

I’m french and a swiss friend of mine had this great idea of going together from Basel to Lugano ( he did this trip many times ) with the intercity 21 so that I can discover the gotthard pass while the base tunnel is still closed ( opening in September ), I am looking forward to discover this line, it’s going to be a very nice day since we are both railway enthusiasts too 😅

Beautiful route, took it last February all the way to Milan, sadly no snow in the mountains, global warming is a bitch. The trains are really nice as well (especially the diner car)

In addition to the Südostbahn service, there are also almost-daily panoramic trains running from Lucerne to Lugano and vice-versa. They're called the "Gotthard Panorama Express"

Point to point fares if booking about a month in advance, even on a UK based website like Trainline aren't any worse (often better) than the UK. But i would advise looking at Interrail or the Swiss travel pass or indeed e regional travel passes if you thought of going. There are decent deals to be had. With Black Friday discount, my Interrail cost me £31 a day first class. Thanks for watching another 👍
Enjoyable video, thanks Johnny. We’re off to Switzerland for a week at the end of August. We adore the country and my other half lived and worked in Zurich for 2 years in the 1990s. We used the Giruno trains on our last trip and, in our opinion, they’re about the best international trains around these days. If only the UK had such an amazing integrated transport system as the Swiss, who realise the importance of public transport to a nation’s economy. Several lake steamers on Lake Lucerne do make the trip from Fluelen to Lucerne each day. Takes about 2.5 hours in total and no change is usually necessary. It’s a great excursion. If you’re just staying in Switzerland it’s usually worth getting a Swiss travel pass. Not cheap, but it enables one to travel on the trains, tram, local buses, post buses and the lake steamers. Some cable cars and mountain railways give a 50% discount for pass holders. If, like us, the trip is mainly about exploring the country by public transport then it’s just so convenient and worth the cost, which in our experience you can recover quite quickly over 3 or 4 days of travelling compared to paying the normal fares. You can, alternatively, get a cheaper pass which gives a 50% discount on public transport.

buzzukfiftythree is certainly right about the Swiss Travel Pass. It gives you access to the whole of Switzerland's amazing public transport. Interrail is largely confined to trains.
You don't need to change boat from Fluelen to Lucerne. that's actually the lake's 'mainline' and there is a fair few runs per day including about 4/5 in the height of summer operated by the 5 paddle steamers on the lake.
@@genoobtlp4424 switzerland has about 13 operating paddle steamers (lucerne and geneva have 5 each), 2 converts to diesel electric and one screw steamer. not bad for a land locked country with no maritime muscle. been to ch about 5 times and managed to bag all except one of the geneva ones owing to crew shortages lol, typical.

The mountains in the Berner Oberland are higher than any of the mountains seen in the videos here. The landscape from Thun to Burgdorf are not part of the Berner Oberland. The Alps ends at Thun.

@jochemjonker3362 The other guy is right, the mountains in Berner Oberland are indeed higher. The region between Thun and Burgdorf is called "Emmental", the hills there are infact not higher, though still incredibly beautiful ;)

No idea actually. European borders have been drawn and redrawn so many times in history! It was so very different though. Each part of Switzerland has such a very different ambience. I suppose due to the topography the different people will have found it difficult to travel between... until of course they got railways!! Thanks for watching 👍
It's merely the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, it's not connected to Italy in any form. The reason why it looks a lot like Italy, is because the mountains in the north are a much more significant border in terms of culture than the political border in the south. The way the villages and landscapes look is much more determined by local geography and climate. Also, viewed historically, the whole region north of Milano was part of the canton of Uri for quite some time back in I-don't-recall-when, which could have led to an even more shared and thus similar culture
So it's rather different to South Tyrol, which was Austrian originally, but then got conquered by Italy and has been through a process of italianization (if that's a word). Allthough it has regained some autonomy in more recent years, it is still very much part of Italy.
After the battle of Marignano in 1515 the territory of Tessin/ Ticino stayed under Confederate surveillance until the creation of the Swiss Republic in 1798 and the creation of the modern Helvetic Confederacy after 1803. Before 1515 it was part of the Duchy of Milano. The Swiss began the conquest of the southern territory in 1403…with the goal of conquering an access to the Mediterranean Sea.
You don't have to change when taking the boat from Flüelen to Lucerne.
And the services are often run by historic steamboats!

Yes indeed. Those Sudostbahn copper coloured Stadler FLIRTs will still be taking the old route. And as we have seen, they too are lovely trains.

The best Pass for tourists visiting Switzerland is the Swiss Travel Pass. It has the same validity as the Swiss General Abonnement.

Thank you for that. I shall add that to my long Swiss list. This was my first trip to the country and i wanted to travel fairly widely and get to experience the whole country, but it was inevitably a snapshot.

@@AlexanderOnFire i highly doubt that the mountains are higher in Berneroberland as the mountains in this video.In my teens,i was on holiday in Großhochstetten, which is at 745 m above sea level.At this time of the year,there isn't any snow there on top of the mountains there,but on top of the mountains in the Alps,there is.
@jochemjonker3362 The other guy is right, the mountains in Berner Oberland are indeed higher. The region between Thun and Burgdorf is called "Emmental", the hills there are infact not higher, though still incredibly beautiful ;)
@@jochemjonker3362 Grosshöchstetten in is in the Berner Mitteland. Berner Oberland is completely located in the Alps. Everything South from Thun is Oberland/Alps and everything North Mittelland.

Italian part of Switzerland? In italy? I never knew that. Is that similar to how Italy also has the southern half of Austrian Tyrol within their nation?
No idea actually. European borders have been drawn and redrawn so many times in history!
It was so very different though. Each part of Switzerland has such a very different ambience. I suppose due to the topography the different people will have found it difficult to travel between... until of course they got railways!!

It's merely the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, it's not connected to Italy in any form. The reason why it looks a lot like Italy, is because the mountains in the north are a much more significant border in terms of culture than the political border in the south. The way the villages and landscapes look is much more determined by local geography and climate. Also, viewed historically, the whole region north of Milano was part of the canton of Uri for quite some time back in I-don't-recall-when, which could have led to an even more shared and thus similar culture
So it's rather different to South Tyrol, which was Austrian originally, but then got conquered by Italy and has been through a process of italianization (if that's a word). Allthough it has regained some autonomy in more recent years, it is still very much part of Italy.
After the battle of Marignano in 1515 the territory of Tessin/ Ticino stayed under Confederate surveillance until the creation of the Swiss Republic in 1798 and the creation of the modern Helvetic Confederacy after 1803. Before 1515 it was part of the Duchy of Milano.
The Swiss began the conquest of the southern territory in 1403…with the goal of conquering an access to the Mediterranean Sea.
Its crazy that within Europe,we have three different power socket types....Swiss,European and UK Irish
