  • You have got to watch this! A truly amazing, awe-inspiring and thought-provoking journey from Luzern to Lugano (via the Gotthard Pass) with Swiss Federal Railways on one of their ‘Giruno’ high-speed trains. And what a train it was!
The weather was a bit grey as we left Luzern but things soon started to brighten up and I'm so glad it did because the views as we made our way south were superb. Everything you would expect from one of these iconic Swiss Railway journeys - and more!
I'll show you all the sights as we head towards the famous Gotthard Pass and I'll tell you all about the train, what to expect and, of course, how much it all costs and the best way to get real value from one of these trips in Switzerland. It's not cheap but there are ways of doing it for less!
I'll summarise the journey once we arrive in Lugano and I hope you'll agree, it was certainly one epic journey you really should try yourself if you can.
Thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and it really encourages me to make more content for you all to enjoy. I also want to give a big shout-out to Johnny Hoover who was instrumental in the making of this video and a great travelling companion. Another amazing video this railway line does like very stunning specially on a clear sunny day with them lakes and mountains better then the grey dull weather at the start of the video lol. Very interesting with section with all the spiral tunnels going through the mountains that must of been such a pain in the neck to engineer.

Beautiful journey Mark. I nearly did this one last month when I was in Switzerland but ended up going to Zermatt instead. All I will say is the Gornergrat metre gauge railway (heavy snow edition!) is just ridiculous. I still have no idea how or why they built it. I paid CFH 192 for a 2-day pass for unlimited cable cars/Gornergrat rides and somehow it was worth every penny! Cheers.

I went to Luzern in 1995 with my parents. It was amazing holiday staying on the lake. We did trains from Zurich to Luzern, down to Interlaken and also Engelberg, plus a bunch of mountain railways. Back then it was all locos and old red and green coaches. A far cry from these space age things. Stadler really do build great trains, and the SBB network is top notch.

Nice video. Only the title is misleading. It is not quite the Gotthard Pass (2000 m high with no train) but the Gotthard mountain line with the original tunnel (1000 m altitude). Tte train is a EC250 with maximum 249 km/h (rounded at 250).

0:02 The Potico is from the 2. Station from 1896 in front of the (4.) 1991 Station of Santiago Calatrava
0:25 Sorry, I have to say your trip on the map was to Locarno - not Lugano- wich is further down south…
2:17 The lighted yellow poster in the down-left corner is a departure timetable where you can find the platform of your train well in advance.
5:11 I love the old “Bridge Station” of the Arth-Rigi-Bahn…It is quite unique.
11:41 The Church of Wassen is very famous -because of the train ! First you spot it from beneath - tunnel - then at the same height - tunnel - and from above…
I would recommend a round-trip from Lucern by ship to Viznau , climbing the Rigi mountain by rack-rail going down with the other line to Arth-Goldau and back to Lucern with the SBB ,with good weather it is just a great journey…!

Just remember to check if your train will travel trough the base tunnel. A few InterRegios and InterCity trains travel trough the tunnel again. To be sure I can recomend the "IR26 Treno Gottardo" operated by the "Südostbahn". This train always travels over the old mountain line. You can board the train in Lucerne but it does end in Locarno and not Lugano. They use the "RABe 526", an absoluteley wonderful and quiet train.

Thank you for an interesting video, but above all thank you for mentioning prominently the SWISS TRAVEL PASS. I have been visiting Switzerland almost every year since 1971. The Swiss Travel Pass for tourists was introduced in 1972. Ever since 1972 I have, on my visits to Switzerland, bought a First Class Swiss (Travel) Pass. The STP may appear expensive when compared to Interrail, but it is A FAR BETTER TICKET IF YOU WANT TO SEE SWITZERLAND. The STP gives free travel on ALL Swiss Public Transport (Bus,Train. Tram, Boats, Cable Cars to high lying villages). Only purely tourist lines up mountains are excluded. On those the STP usually gives 50% discount.

nice Video. I've you have not been you should definitely take the train along lake Geneva. if you do I can only recommend that you stop in Vevey and take the regional train that leaves once every hour to Puidoux. It's only a 13 minute train ride but absolutely worth it. it takes you through the UNECO world heritage site Lavaux, a multitude of beautiful terraced vineyards. Back in Vevey you could either continue to Lausanne and then Geneva or take the Train to the mountains canton of Valais through Montreux, depending what direction you want to continue.

Some years ago my brother and his wife did a 9 day rail tour around Switzerland. They had the weather you did at the start of your trip, but all day, everyday! 😂
Here's two other scenic train trips I've done which would make interesting videos: Nice to Milan - get the service which straddles lunchtime and sit on the right of the carriage and the views are amazing! Also from Nice is an unusual train called Les Train a la Pines - the pine train. It's called this because they burn pine cones as the fuel in the boiler. Takes you right up into the French Alps to a tiny station (can't remember the name after 30 years 😂) but a memorable trip otherwise

I love Swiss Trains and I had 1st class Swiss Rail Pass back in Feb 2020. I took the classic route on one of the regional trains that normally are the only ones covering the route. I had the train almost to myself as of course most people take the fast trains through the tunnel when it is open. I loved Locarno and was lucky enough to have a free upgrade to a balcony room over looking Lake Maggiore. Locarno boasts over 300 days of Sunshine a year. I came into Lugano from Italy on the private railway from Domodssola through the mountains and was included in the pass. Looking forward to other lines you rode. They say you should visit in the winter and the summer as there scenery is so different. Lucerne to Montreux is a fantastic line and any line through a valley.

As we live in Germany and like to travel to Ticino
and do train and boat journey in Switzerland and the Italian Lakes
so this journey or more accurately the Zürich - Lugano trains
especially over the the Gotthard Pass before the Basistunnel was built.
It is one of my favourite journeys and we have got out at Göschenen
and gone up the rack-railway to Andermatt and
gone down the Rhine valley to Chur - which has local trains
    used by Romansch speakers
    (the fourth language of Switzerland)
and a fraction of the cost of the Glacier Express.

I absolutely liked my ride on a Giruno when I tried it last year between Zurich and Bologna (that train was suddenly canceled as a result of the closure of the Gotthard base tunnel, luckily I travelled a few days before that).
Yup, I agree that the CHF 5 for a coffee is a bit pricey but the fact that you can have a proper dining car it something great (I had once lunch on it between Geneva and Zurich).
In this case, the old Gotthard line is absolutely amazing, much better than the long closed tunnel

One thing that stood out for me was no ear splitting door operating beeps or constant announcements, one could actually work, read or get 40 winks without being rudely awoken. Why can't UK trains be the same instead of pandering to every possible disability known to mankind.

Never thought of that Tony - good point. See it, say it, sorted blasting out every 10 minutes, drives me mad!

Wow what an amazing scenic journey! It would be nice if British trains were as nice as swiss ones.
There was another video i watched where someone travelled from somewhere in northern Italy to Switzerland on a train with huge windows that open aswell, but I can't remember the name of it.

Cheers Dean, it certainly would be! Probably one of the panorama coaches that - maybe the Bernina Express?

I must remind my nightmare: The cable car and gear train from Grindelward to Eigergletscher and Jungfraujoch cancelled twice during Easter. After my first cancelled trial and refund request I‘ve booked for tomorrow, unfortunately, for the 2nd trial "cancellation" was informed on the Berner Bahn before arriving Gare Grindelward.

I would've liked to have visited that but it was quite expensive. Needs a full day really.

Is this only while the very long tunnel 🚇 is closed for repairs 🚧 , or might they still run Inter-City trains over the old route when it's open again? It would be nice if they did, recognising that that's what tourists want and not necessarily just wanting to get everywhere as quickly as possible

Just take the bronze coloured "Treno Gottardo" Interregio trains from SOB - They are almost as classy as the Giruno and will continue taking the top route. Plus they got larger windows, which is convenient on this scenic route.

      @LetsMakeaTrip  2 месяца назад

Andrei the base tunnel knocks an hour off the journey so I guess they won't but like Markus says, there are plenty of other options.

If i hadn't watched some of your other videos i would think your a "travel snob", that train would shame a few airlines, so smooth clean and quiet , practically had it to yourself to, i was surprised that @ 15.15 a motorbike passed you, the speeding fines in switzerland are eye watering,. Draconian speed limits motorway 120 kph = 74mph and main roads outside built up areas 80 to 100 kph, built up areas 50 kph,. Glad the weather bucked up for you, getting tired of seeing that blue rain coat,. enjoy cuckoo clock and toblerone land, and have to agree, the views are stunning.

Hi Johan, thanks for the comment. I did use kilometres a while back and I had comments saying I should use miles and feet! 😂. At least 90% of my subs are from the UK and US so you can see why. I may add the conversion as text in the future though. Appreciate the feedback 👍

More music to ruin what was a good vlog, when you like trains it’s good to listen to the set and people, natural, not to have lousy music, leave the music for MTV
