Seville to Málaga using the old route. Slower, but much more to see!

  • It's time to return to Málaga from Seville. But this time, using the Iberian gauge "Media Distancia" diesel service that follows the old route across Andalucia and down the valley of the Río Guadalhorce.
This slower train takes at least 1 hour longer to undertake the journey although it is about half the price. But is the scenery worth the extra hour on the train? Yes. I think it is.
    Departure: Seville Santa Justa, Spain
    Destination: Málaga Maria Zambrano, Spain
    Distance: 156 km / 96 miles
    Duration: 2hrs 54 mins
Cost: Adult standard (Turista) single €24,95 / £21.95
    Date of Travel: December 2022
    Operator: Renfe
Motive power: Renfe Media Distancia Class 599 3-car diesel multiple unit. Built: CAF (2009-2011)

Yes, it was beautiful. Somehow I think I prefer slow trains... But, then again, if I'd needed to be in Málaga for a work meeting, I might be taking a different view!

Another great video, thanks for taking the time and trouble to do them. I can't believe you don't get more views as your travel vlogs are easily up there with most others on RUclips. Some ideas for consideration... I particularly like UK trips; enjoyed the ride out, walk back series; out of the way rural destinations; maybe a Scottish islands ferry hop series? Thanks again

Thank you as ever for the nice words 👍
I'm back of to Scotland this month and was felling like going on one of the Clyde ferries, so your request comes at a very good time! I'm pleased you like the ride out, walk backs. Now spring is just around the corner I need to do some more.

I took this train last week, Sevilla to Malaga, turned up 90 minutes late in Sevilla and broke down before reaching Malaga. All passengers told to get off the train at Alora to wait 1 hour for a regional train to reach Malag, such fun 🙂

It did look a good route, and again a quality video. I notice you are taking on staff. This must be because you are approaching the 1000 subscriber mark. I am thinking that High Speed Rail is a bit like motorway travel or easy jet. Youi do it for the convenience not the experience. Imagine a London to Edinburgh trip that avoided Newcastle city and offered no glimpse of Durham Cathedral. I hope on your way back you recorded your easy jet experience for us, and waxed lyrical about the airports.

Yes, high speed is cool, but there's room for slow travel. I'm off to ride TGV in March, but have also got some excellent slow travel across Slovakia and France to come...
...oh and yes, easyJet is half-edited and will be on-screen in a week or two.

Being an old (and presumably non electrified) line, I find it quite fast (if the indications on the map showing between 120-160 km/h are correct) and longer travel time is probably due mainly to many stops on the route. However, 25€ for roughly 160 km isn't cheap.

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels  Год назад

Yes, lots of stops made it slow. After my recent "fast but slow" trip in Slovakia I do think the Spanish ride was fine.
I was a rookie traveller in Spain. I reckon there are probably better deals to be had 🤷‍♂️

@@JohnnyHooverTravels Thank you, good news, scenery looks fabulous, the views from the bus are wonderful over to the mountains of Morocco, rock of Gibraltar and kite surfers at Tarifa but its a near 5 hour endurance test for the bladder!

I'm not quite sure what you mean. The reason I prefer the slow journey is that the journey itself is more beautiful, even if you arrive later than with the high speed train.
