    when i hold grasshoppers like that, they continue to kick until their legs fall off.

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +6

      I could see that happen since they can kick pretty hard. It has never happened to me though with the way I hold them. You want to try and keep them from kicking and hurting themselves if possible.

    • @galaxytraveler5779
      @galaxytraveler5779 6 лет назад +1

      yes i was probably holding them from too far down the legs allowing them to bend them. I was a kid when i did it so i guess that is my excuse lol

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +1

      yeah I have found that grabbing the joint works best so they cant bent it.

    I used to have some of these as pets. They are usually brown but I have seen quite a few of them bright green up by a place called moon lake.

    Those are really cool! However we also have the Western Longwing Katydid here and it is far more impressive in my opinion.

      Cool! I think every insect has an interesting story and something unique and awesome about it. Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy hunting!

    One thing I discovered in this area where Mormon Crickets are present is that the small streams will have a massive amount of fish in them. When the crickets are moving the fishing will be very good. Surprising large fish will be present in small streams which normally would only have small fish in them.

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  5 лет назад

      Stanley Tolle really that’s good to know! I used to catch brook trout in small streams in Idaho when I was a kid. Maybe now with your tip I can follow the crickets to find some bigger fish!

    One bright and sunny day i was trucking out west on a back road, way way out in the sticks. Then all of a sudden the road turned black and red. When i tried to slow down to figure out what was going on, it WAS like ice. The guts and shells coated my tires. What a mess.

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +2

      Easygoin0sacramento yeah they can be a real mess when in heavy numbers.

    One other thing. I don't know if this has anything to do with the crickets but if you are fishing watch out for the rattle snakes. This was in the Fish Lake area and there were rattle snakes all over the place. Mostly small ones but some larger ones. Nothing to worry about just keep an eye out. Don't get to distracted (fly fishing) retrieving flys and lures caught in bushes. High top boots and jeans are suggested (I was in shorts.) The snakes are not aggressive but just don't step on them. The snakes could have been attracted to the creek because the crickets could have been back up along the creek if they we're migrating. Maybe the Rattlers were eating the crickets? There were crickets in the bushes like they were using the bushes to cross the creek. I kind of got the feeling there are areas that the crickets thrive in and that is why there were so many fish and big ones at that in the creak. Never seen so many rattle snakes before too.

      Yeah I know about rattle snakes. I will be careful thanks for sharing the stories! :)

    Oh gee, lovely. Can't really stand bugs. Last week I was cooking at the stove and I felt a tickly feeling in the crack between my big toe and the next toe. I looked down and a sewer cockroach had nestled in and was just sitting there. I screamed. It didn't even budge!!! It was just sitting there on my toe all cuddled up???

    Do you have eastern lubber grasshoppers where you live? are they poisonous? Some say they are and some say they aren't. What do you think?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  7 лет назад +2

      They can be found in Texas and in the Southern United States, but up in the Rockies they are not present. This article may be helpful to you in learning more. entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/lubber.htm The article talks about the toxic chemicals that they are capable of spraying. These are used as a defense against predators. I assume you are worried about your own well being. The article states that these are produced to make them unpalatable. This means they are producing these toxins so they don't get eaten. I think as long as you aren't eating them or sticking them near your face you should be fine. Does that answer your question. Sorry if I got distracted from what you were actually trying to find out.

    So, if you have a Mormon cricket problem, the solution is to introduce more mormon crickets...

    Ok so I'm in Virginia, and I've been seeing an insect that looks just like this, not quite as large but close. And it has yellow on its underside. Nothing else during my research even looks close but Mormon cricket isn't supposed to be found here.

    Giant ground crickets from Africa are freaky things! They like to eat baby birds.......and other giant ground crickets, they can also squirt their own yellow, foul smelling blood at you in self defense, except if they do it attracts others and then they are promptly eaten!
