Saving Honey Bees: Dragonfly Figurine vs. Giant Hornets

- In this video, we conduct an intriguing experiment to see if a dragonfly figurine can save honey bees from the relentless attacks of giant hornets. The golden-ringed dragonfly is a formidable predator in Japan, and we've modeled a figurine after it to test its effectiveness as a decoy. Watch as we place the figurine near a struggling colony of Japanese honey bees and observe the hornets' reactions.

I love dragonflies dude, one of the few insects I've never had beef with. Not only do they fly gracefully with total control and make no noise, but are also a predator against wasps? These guys just keep getting cooler.
They are also one of the most vicious killers of mosquitoes, both in their larval and adult stage. Definitely deserves the "Best Insect" award.
You need a camera system that identifies the hornets and shoots a small stream of water at the giant hornets. 😊
the hornet have got to associate the fake dragonfly with death. you got to kill one with the dragonfly
So you saying that the Guy should smash one of the hornet with the plastic Dragonfly?

Or make a drone that can completely act like a dragon to fly (fighting, wing flapping, it's noise, ect) to convince them to go away...
@@anthonyfloyd2327 no, *SMASH*
What if you made a dragonfly figurine and put a tiny bit of electrical current going through it? That way is the hornets touched the dragonfly that’s electric it’ll zap them. Good luck.
only problem with that is if it were to touch the honey bees it would fry them
@@shadowreptile001 They were staying away from it from the beginning. It seems to be the threat for the hornets.
@@beebob1279 Still not a good idea...once the Hornets leave, the Bees will come back out and inevitably touch the figurine...I guarantee that you'll have more dead Bees than Hornets with that method. 💯
A potential idea would be to use a bit of tech using not only a small camera but also a microphone, attached to a raspberry pi and programmed to only turn on the current when detecting the hornets specifically within range by wing vibration tones and visual recognition programmed into it, set a specific bait trap that only the hornets would be attracted to that honeybees won’t go after (such as protein), and a tiny speaker connected to output a sound that the honeybees ignore but attract the hornets. If set up a meter away from the hive in weatherproof housing and on solar-powered rechargeable batteries, especially if you have multiples of them surrounding the hive, it could work well to lure and kill only the hornets and otherwise inactive when only the honeybees are around and touching it. In fact, the housing for the battery, raspberry pi, bait, speaker, camera, microphone and solar panel can be constructed from similar beehive box wood materials on a much smaller scale with fake entrances to fool even the smarter hornets, if honey is also used in the bait but the fake mini hive housing is sealed enough to prevent honeybees from entering it despite scent holes in the sides.
Even the dragonflies are bigger in Japan 😢
I'm thinking you can electrify the dragonfly like a bug zapper. Let the hornets attack that and they get zapped.
Though, some bees that would be fascinated by the figurine would also be zapped. Maybe an off/on mode could solve that?
in a 1v1 with a real live dragonfly, maybe the dragonfly wins... but once there's 3 or more, i doubt the dragonfly would get the upper hand... altho it can probably just fly away any time since dragonflies probably have superior top speed. the glue paper is still most effective by a long way.
Probably need to glue like 20 of them all over the hive.
Or pet a real dragonfly
Time for a sticky trap.
A softball bat and a few beers and I'd have a ball with those big ole hornets.
So, the bees avoid the dragonfly, but the hornets attack it ?
Electrifie it :)
Definitely nervous/cautious around it.
I wonder if it would be more convincing if the dragonfly's wings were moving. Maybe another idea would be to dangle one of those fake gel human hands for ballistics testing and see if they start stinging it.
Busy little Bee 👍😃
i have a suggestion to make a remote taser system on the figure to activate with a button from a distance when there are hornets on it
watching a random japanese guy cooking up methods to protect its bees its all i wanted to watch on youtube
These hornets look completely different from the way bees look, train a neural network to recognize them and assemble an automatic laser turret that shoots at hornets and wasps, it seems to me that there will be more benefits from active protection.
Giant asian hornets are the strongest insects next to praying mantis and carnivorous katydids..
I think giant hornet would kill a mantis one by one, if mantis does not ambush. Those huge armored grasshoppers on the other hand won't be bothered even by a group of hornets.
Did you ever get stung by the hornets? How bad?
The figurine of a dragon fly works like a tank in a party, it hold the attacks while bees try to attack the hornets from behind
Need one that delivers shocks at the press of a button.
Busy bee there for sure
The only way i see this working is if you manually had a option to make its wings flap to make it more convincing plus a manual button to give the dragonfly a current of electric whenever you see a hornet actually messing with it. If its automatic it might present more danger to the honey bees then the hornets. I feel like maybe if someone was able to use and identify the pheromones the hornets give off but combine it with a zapper function for the said hornets maybe that might be something worth trying out as an experiment? They seem very organized as a hornet colony so one way to get their attention would be using a similar pheromone they give off some kind of smell that attracts them to a different location.

Release the sticky mat!
So Interesting !
Could you try the glue trays traps. I'm not sure what they are called.
My lord! Why are you risking your life?!?!
Perhaps you could create a small pond nearby and naturally attract dragonflies?
It is mentioned in video that the Dragonflies attack bees as well i am afraid that something like that can cause more trouble then it prevents.
I wonder if the dragonfly had some motion to it like hanging so it is just above and in front of the hive's entrance, but free to move with air currents. Secondly, having it face outwards by having a piece of string attached to its tail and to the hive wall.
You need to install air missile system to bee entrance.
You increased the confidence of the hornets. They will never leave your beehives.
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Get out the glue traps!!
Why are you not killing the hornets if they are destroying the honeybee hives? Shouldn't be too hard to locate the nest?
those hornets over there are like yellow jackets in the US.. they are everywhere and with rather large colonies.. if you kill one, the pheromone it gives as its dying will draw dozens if not more to the spot where it was killed.. the beekeeper would never be able to kill them all to the point there is no more distress pheramone .. thats why when you watch the videos where they use glue sheets that a hundred hornets end up on the sheet.. it attracts more rather than stops the attack..
Some bees have a defense technique against giant wasps too, they swarm it then unleash all their body heat (though I believe it's usually against the scouts)
@@KillrMonkey19 It works, but is more of a desperate last resort defence tactic, when beehive is raided. Essentially pulling a last stand that may or may not save the hive.
Best part 6:01
I saw a video on youtube ruclips.net/video/BektxRaJg9s/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/29bgJqpao6g/видео.html where people would put meat out and when the hornets would feed on the meat they would tag them with a streamer while the hornet was preoccupied by feeding on the meat, and then follow the hornet back to the nest with a drone. Once they discovered the location of the nest a couple of guys would suit up and deal with the whole colony. Problem solved
You are BRAVE to stand so close to those little monsters!
Why don't you make a greenhouse over the hive, with flowers maybe just for fall and even make an entrance for the bees to come out and not the harness just like the hive
it would have to be strong material since the hornets have strong bite force
❤🐝
What a lame waste of time making this video lol
It was an experiment, to see if the model would scare the hornets. This experiment mostly failed, but it’s nice to share the knowledge.
What 2 hornet 😮
