Wilt was a shotput thrower, a champion high jumper, a track star and a triple jumper back in college. The guy was rumored to have a 54 inch vertical (and indeed was). There's a famous pic of him while he was a track star in college, showing him jumping straight up next to a high-jump bar. He was about 54 inches off the ground when the photo was taken (it won the photographer an award). Wilt wasn't sure if he was on the way up or on the way down. Even when he was playing volleyball, he'd often be photographed spiking the ball, and his waist would be over the net. Wilt is described by Sports Illustrated as the finest athletic construction made of flesh and blood. The Nets were seriously considering adding him to the roster in the 80's, when he was already in his 50's.
Wilts vert was probably more like 40 inches, the highest he was ever photographed in the nba was with his head maybe slightly above the rim. As a 7 footer that definitely ain’t a 50 inch or above vertical

1-foot dunkers can get up insanely high but have a lesser vertical since it is often measured off a 2-foot stop. Though I agree there are some great 2-foot jumpers on your list.
3:40 Jordan's 48 inch is a lie . We should have seen him with his shoulder touching the backboard. He should be able to touch the rim with his chin . We have seen people who touched the rim with their chin .
Wilt Chamberlain won the high jump at the Milrose Games in 1956 with a jump of 6'7" or 79".Some how I think he belongs on this list. And for all of you folks out there that don't know why foul shooters have to be behind the line when the ball hits the rim, Wilt was dunking from the foul line ten years before Jordan was born. Rule change to keep him from scoring, as was widening the paint, offensive goal tending, 6 personal fouls. There are several more but you get the idea.

It would be interesting to see highest vertical jumps for big men. I know that Shaq, at the beginning of his career, had really great jumping abilities for a man this size and weight.
@@goku360100 No that's the beginning of his carreer I'm talking about, whenhe played in Orlando (or LSU) I'm not talking about fat Shaq, look at videos and you'll see what an athlete he was, he sure could get off the ground...
This guy doesnt know much, Dr.J took quarters off the top of backboards, its well documented whether the NBA counts it or not but I agree about “Skywalker”
When Jordan went up for a dunk (with his 48" vert)... it always kind of looked like the ball was glued to his hand & that it would only detach from it until it was "scraped off" by the rim... But it was just that he had a "gloves" to handle the ball for dunks when the rest of us just have a hands to do it...
They said at the beginning of the video they only used players that were actually measured and recorded. I'm pretty sure they only left him off because they didn't have a recorded vert on him or because he may have had less than the minimum who were recorded.
My thoughts too. I suspect that the guy who created this video was too young too know about him. But Thompson, who had a vertical of 44 inches, was the original sky walker of basketball. as Michael Jordan said, and incidentally DT was MJ's childhood hero, the entire concept of "vertical leap" started with Thompson.
Bill Russell high jumped over 6’9” in college, he stated he could get the rim at eye level and touch the top of the backboard. He had a standing reach of 9’2”. That a vert of 46”. Who are we to doubt him?? He did much greater things than that.
There is a photo of a rather relaxed looking Russell casually hovering with his eyes at rim height during an NBA game. If Russell is 6'10, the distance from his eyes to the top of his head is about 6 inches, so you are talking about something like a 44" vertical
What I think people don’t understand about Jordan’s leaping ability was he wasn’t using it to jump his highest. He was more of an artist with his ability. That’s why it’s really hard to mimic him. He’d use his insane vertical ability to manipulate and hang in the air, like a flying motion. That’s why some people don’t fully get what a special and freakish guy he really was.
Quit Makin stuff up. Jordans vertical wasn't all that special. Gerald Green, shorter than Jordan, could put his whole head over the rim with a running jump. That's special
I agree, although he even used his jumping ability with jump shoots, I think I never saw him jumping at his highest without a ball. It was always jumping with the ball, and with total control.

You missed Wilt! His vert was insane for a big man, easily over 40 inches in his prime. There's many in person tales of Wilt grabbing items from atop the backboard for show before games. For a comparison, Shaq was the same height and had a 32 inch vertical.
Michael never really had to focus on his 3pnts cause it wasn't widely used during that time. But he was spot on when it came to contested 2pnt percentage.
@@fury_021 as i wrote lbj needs 39,5 to touch rim. I believe 40,5 to 42 is his max. Gerald Green 6 to 8" head over rim, giving him close to 50" and not many talk/ know about it. I can send u the link if u haven't seen it?
Wilt Chamberlain had a 50" vert and was a high jump champion at Kansas. Before they changed the free throw rules, Wilt would start his run to the free throw line 3 steps from the top of the key, jump, and dunk it. 🔥🐐
Wilt doesn't have a 48 inch vert because if he had, he would have smashed I mean SMASHED the record in high jumping in 1960. Combine his long legs of 1.2m+ and a 48 inch vert 1.22m, even with the scissor technique (jump while leaning) he still will smash the record by a wide margin. Even with a 46 inch vert he still easily will get the record. Wilt has a likely vert of 42 inches.

I had NO clue that it was even note-worthy until I was looking at the 2023 NBA combine results and my vertical would have been the best of all NBA rookies that year, and only 8 have better in the past 5 years. I was honestly shocked! It's such a random ability and one I honestly didn't work at outside of practice.

Gerald Green, his head was way above the rim. Very underrated
I was thinking the same. He definitely has a 46-48 inch vertical. Should be number 2 on this list.
All facts as I was around during that time and all is true about the great Wilt the Stilt.
Luis Suarez bro his hip would be at the rim stop cappin

Why would they lie? And no nba player has touched the rim with their chin.
Exactly wilt is underrated

They changed the rules to try and keep him from dominating
They interviewed an Olympic Gold Medal high jumper once (I think Dwight Stones) and he said his own vertical wasn't that high - not even 30 inches - and he was skeptical of a lot of these 40 inch vertical claims. Typical elite high jumper verticals are 26" - 33". Every now and again you get one that is higher. Point being - maybe Wilt does, maybe Wilt doesn't belong on this list. Jordan would take flight in his Air Jordans and remain airborne longer than any player we've seen.... Well said👏🏼
Griffith was better and more fun to watch.
This list is bogus if David Thompson isn’t on it
They said at the beginning of the video they only used players that were actually measured and recorded. I'm pretty sure they only left him off because they didn't have a recorded vert on him or because he may have had less than the minimum who were recorded.
Skywalker
My thoughts too. I suspect that the guy who created this video was too young too know about him. But Thompson, who had a vertical of 44 inches, was the original sky walker of basketball. as Michael Jordan said, and incidentally DT was MJ's childhood hero, the entire concept of "vertical leap" started with Thompson.
and wilt chamberlin
DT had a 44 inch vert
Bill Russell high jumped over 6’9” in college, he stated he could get the rim at eye level and touch the top of the backboard. He had a standing reach of 9’2”. That a vert of 46”. Who are we to doubt him?? He did much greater things than that.
it’s back in the 60 no official record and now we can’t someone who is 80 sum to jump to see what’s his vertical.
Then watch Gerald Green who is 6'8 and jumps so high that his chin is above the rim.
Jordan's brother is only 5' 8" and could out jump Michael.
I agree, although he even used his jumping ability with jump shoots, I think I never saw him jumping at his highest without a ball.
It was always jumping with the ball, and with total control.
