Most versatile and best are different tho. He wasn’t nearly as impactful as some of the defensive hubs like kg, Hakeem, Robinson, Russell, and Duncan “. He was a one on one guy. But from a team aspect, he pails in comparison. Those guys actually could have an entire defensive scheme ran though them. Rodman couldn’t.

well, the thing about Duncan is that he doesn't need to block the shot because most of the time with his positioning, he made it really hard to shot over him. Quick and long hands, and pretty quick small jump just to touch or to contest the shot. That makes him as best protector of paint

@@drinabezfiltera5958 facts too many casuals don’t understand that there’s way more to defense than steals and blocks. Tim’s greatest asset was his IQ. Always rotating into position to cover his teammates, pointing out defensive lapses to the team during timeouts, the ability to block shots and keep them in play for fast break opportunities and the ability to alter shots without fouling. That’s what made him a great defender

WAIT! The best you could do with Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain was an "Oh yeah, them too" at the end of Kareem's segment? "Those two" are so far in first and second place in career blocked shots, that there is no third place. The fact that the NBA did not track blocks does not detract from that as a known fact by everyone. Also, blocks WERE an official internal stat for the Philadelphia 76'ers. Wilt averaged 8.8 blocks in the 150-odd games he played for that organization. DPOY did not exist for them, otherwise one or the other would have won every year they were in the NBA.

Wilt is definitely not the second. He was a great defender when he wanted to be. But he wasn’t nearly as impactful as u think. He was more of a big play guy rather than a team impact guy on defense. The numbers don’t back him as being that high up. He just camped in the lane and blocked anything that moved most of the time. There is far more impactful and versatile defenders than him. If anyone is second, it’s Hakeem, followed by Duncan, David Robinson, and kg. Then it’s a toss up between Kareem and wilt from there.

If they recorded blocks during Kareem's entire career, we would probably assume they'd do it during Wilt's as well, therefore Kareem wouldn't be anywhere near the blocks leader. 3 a game is great. Wilt's contemporaries think he averaged 12-14 for his career. They counted blocks the last two seasons he played and he averaged 8.8 per game. • @mickeylee2624

Pretty good list. Honestly, there was a bit recency bias:
    - Moncrief (2 DPOY's during an era when defense was more valued) over Kobe;
    - Admiral (DPOY, block and rebounding titles, and similar to Olajuwon in ridiculous timing for prolific blocks, steals, and rebounding totals)/Russell over Duncan.
The top of the 15 would have to be Rodman (ability to lockdown Shaq to seriously hounding Magic or Jordan) or Olajuwon (post defense superiority as well as ability to cover ground all the way to the perimeter arguably better than anyone with Russell and Robinson close behind) for their positional dominance AND versatility. Among purely wing players, MJ, Pippen, and Kawhi are tough to top.
Thus, my All-Time Starting 5 Defense would be:
    SF: Pippen
    PF: Rodman
    C: Olajuwon
    G: Jordan
    G: Kawhi
The 3 wings would be switchable depending on match up as with the 2 front court spots; as a bonus, Pistons Rodman able to erase wings and Spurs/Bulls Rodman to alternate with Olajuwon to shutdown players like Shaq.

Bill Russell literally changed the way the game was played with his defense.
John Stockton remains the career leader in Steals, a mark that will probably stand as long as his Assists record.
Mark Eaton, 2 time DPOY, is the career leader in blocks per game at 3.5.

I was pleased to see Russell and Duncan on there. I would have put Michael Cooper on there over Kobe. Kobe was amazing, but Coop was the best perimeter defender of his era, with a doff of the cap to Moncrief, Jones, and Robertson

@@josefbleaux6724 ...Think about the level of weaker competition Russell faced and how Rodman, Olajuwon, Mutombo, Jordan, Pippen, Wallace, etc. would feast on it if they played during Russell’s era. This is also why I don’t take his 11 championships that seriously either. All you needed was to win one series and you’re in the Finals. Russell was a great defender and rebounder, sure, but he wouldn’t win 11 in the 80s, 90s and up. Nor would he be as elite defender against the HOF centers of the 90s.
I do agree that he should be listed in the top 15 regardless. But I don’t think he’s in the top half. I also thought perhaps Stockton could’ve been listed. All time steals leader, but he often gets underrated.

Rodman spent an enormous amount of time watching other players shoot. He would figure out how much spin each player put on the ball and calculate exactly where the ball would end up after a missed shot. It's why he always seemed like he was in the perfect position to grab a rebound.

I don't know if I could take anyone off that list..? But I could give you five Jazz players that could or maybe should be on that list, and five reasons why..
    # 1 John Stockton - All time Steals leader, it's not even close! Nobody enjoyed playing against him because he was two steps ahead of ya, and that ball was going to get snatched at some point!
    # 2 Mark Eaton - 2 time defensive player of the year. 4th all time in blocked shots, leads the league with 3 and 1/2 blocked shots a game to this day.
    # 3 Rudy Robert - 5 time defensive team, 4 time all NBA, 3 time defensive player of the year. (tied for the most)
    # 4 Karl Malone - 4 time defensive team. I watched him play against the best power forwards of all time Tim Duncan, Charles Barkley, and Kevin Garnett he shut them down! especially when it mattered. Go back and watch the film.
    # 5 Andre Kirilenko - I honestly believe Andre is a better defender and player than Draymond Green. 3 time defensive team, Blocks Leader 2005. Averaged almost 2 blocks a game and 1 and 1/2 Steals. Green -1 Block a game and not quite one and half steals a game. Both great defenders, but its just funny to me how he's so easily put on every list but Kirilenko is never mentioned when he really is the better player.
