Best High school team to ever play. Nobody was beating that style of play. Perfect chemistry, had the size and had the shooting. And they were a public school😳🥶
The 2009/2010 Ames HS Team out of Iowa would have giving them a hell of a game and maybe an L. Only HS in History to have all 5 Starters play in the NCAA Tournament the samr year at the time. 3 five star recruits in the starting lineup. One being a freshman and the other technically an 8th grader in Lamelo who moved up a grade. That's unprecedented.

@michaelreed9805 I was hoping my old High School (Wallkill Senior HS in upstate NY), we used to be REALLY feared for ALL our sports teams. Back in the 80s and 90s that's when they were really solid. I mean literally, Wrestling, Football, Basketball, baseball/Softball, even our Soccer and track and field teams were really tough to beat. But not anymore. I can't even go to a rivalry game hoping for a close, tough win in basketball or football. It's really just sad. We've got some really good athletic guys in basketball this season, and yet we'll probably finish with no more than 13 wins out of the 20 games we'll have this season. When I went in 2013-17, we weren't the best but we also definitely weren't the worst team and at least we tried but the coaches just weren't good. Execute well under pressure, by hitting the good looks and free throws, and you win a lot more games than you lose. We couldn't do that but hopefully we can win a few good league games.

Hello! Current student of Chino Hills high, my dad was the AD at this time. I just wanted to say, I felt like O should get a little more recognition than he did in this video. He was f*cking amazing. I really never cared for basketball and for some reason I started watching this I will say one thing this is the most talented young men I have ever seen in my life. I really hope they succeed in life and may God be with them 🙏
I remember being in middle school and everyone talking about the Ball brothers and watching them play. It felt like forever. And now it put things into perspective, they are good together.
The coach literally has one job on that team... Sub players in if the deficit is too much. He let the boys play their game and don't really coach as you can see Melo cherrypicking almost always.
Highschool and college sports like that is something I really wish we had here in Europe. For me, my school and university always were just places I go to to learn something and get an education, but I don't have this connection to them like many Americans do. We did have a soccer team and a racing team in university, but it wasn't a big thing and most students didn't really care about it. The way Americans identify with their schools and go to these games really is something beautiful.
As an American and parent of school age children I wish more emphasis was placed on education at schools and universities. We are a nation becoming more dumb every generation, but we're getting better and better athletes!
Yeah but the over obsession with the sports programs also means the actual education itself is fucking abysmal lol. Go talk to the general public in any state in this country and you'll have at least 60 brain cells commit suicide because of the dumb ass people we have here.
It’s gotta be interesting from a non basketball fan perspective. I assume it made your recommended by the vague title and you’re not really a basketball fan. Trust me though there is gona be a documentary about how legendary this high school basketball team really was
Jason Bodily 5:00 please focus on everything that was said at this point. 3 brothers( one of which was a 14 year old freshman) took a public school to the championship game and beat beat 8 D1 recruits. I promise you that shit is never gonna happen again.
Matteo Meehan Lmao doubt they were scared it’s just the MHSAA won’t let any HS teams compete farther than 300 miles away or compete in any national tournaments because they’re some backwards thinking snobby old crooks
LaMelos confidence from a young age is incredible lmaoo u gotta be mentally tough to even try to play top players who are atleast 3-4 years older then you let alone be as good as he was.
I’m an Aussie, Basketball isn’t exactly deeply ingrained in our culture as it is in the U.S. That being said, watching those three brothers do what they did... It was as if the other team had half the amount of players! And that 14 year old, his ability and mind for the game... Absolutely something else. I have never seen such raw talent in any other sport. Thank you for sharing this story, for the detail you went in to so that uninformed viewers like myself could understand the context of this story. I hope those brothers continue to realise their potential, injury-free, in the NBA. Cheers.
i agree especially since some of them on the bench watching were pretty good themselves! I wonder if their talent was ever exposed? as it really wasn't shown during the seasons together.
Also to be fair, PG is a position you don't need any height for. Mugsy was 5'3" and put up totally respectable PG stats against a whole league of active NBA players for the 6 seasons '90-'95. Someone who's 5'8 has 5 inches on that. Why does PG not need height? They can succeed by: 1) not turning the ball over (low center of gravity = shorter dribbling height = harder to steal from) 2) stealing from opponents (low COG is probably useful here as well) 3) finding open guys to pass to 4) taking the occasional open jumper (where no one is close enough to block) or layup off of fast breaks. By only taking smart, open shots and otherwise making good passes, every possession can be good.
Did he not get in trouble because he played up a grade, instead of playing down a grade? Um, this 8th grader is whooping on a senior. It's ok, it's cool.
Nick Koorsen They still do, it’s what people on the internet strive on. Even with all that clowning he’s still successful and living comfortably. I’m sure he doesn’t care if ppl clown or not.
Watching this 4 years later. Melo is projected to be an all star starter, Lonzo is back from injury and Gelo is a musical star. Lavar really did go 3 for 3. As a bonus, Onyeka Okongwu is averaging a career high 11 points and 7 boards for the hawks.
Tow Dow 3 because they aren’t a public school they are a nba player factory. They whooped on anyone, with an 8th grader an unranked freshman (at the time) and 2 unranked juniors (at the time) and they were definitely better than oak hill melo almost beat them on his own. They were a team who played together as a unit.
Tow Dow 3 because that’s what the whole school is about. It’s a basketball breeding ground, chino hills is a normal ass public school while oak hill recruits the best of the best
My neighbor two doors down in highschool was one grade below me and we both played basketball, so for a few summers were played almost daily against each other, in highschool we always played very well off each other because we always knew what the other player was about to do. When you’ve been reading each others basketball body language for years you play more like 1 unit than individual players. Given their talent it is not surprising the success the Ball brothers had since they’ve been playing each other since they were born
i mean he’s highkey right ive been involved in trinity league athletics for over 15 year and mater dei does not lose to public schools they spend over 10 million a year on their basketball program in a year and theres about 10 other schools in the so cal like that and chino is not one of them so ya a public school winning the open division championship is unheard of
Ty YT Ty YT i played long beach poly in my first highschool playoff game and juju smith beat us on a last minute touchdown poly is a different animal. we also lost 73-3 to de la salle also one time lmao
Mater dei is quite literally that one school in all the sports movies where the school has all the best players in the world and use all the money in the world to get them. For anyone who doesn’t live in socal, they are the school that never loses because of they’re so damn well equipped so what the ball bothers did with a public school was beyond insane in not only beating them but absolutely destroying them. The ball brothers don’t get enough credit for their skills because of all the other BS that comes along the fame but I think lonzo and melo have proven their worth in the NBA
From Canada I didn't know that history so thanks. Watching this I can't get the grin off my face and I only play ball until high school ended in the 80s.
@@rfmmike6096 did they fall off during the ball brothers era? Before that I just remember mater dei dominating the three major sports (baseball, football and basketball)
they were from California in a 4a division, so most of the teams in their division they played more than once, thus why they beat several teams that were ranked more than once, match that up with private schools padding their schedules with decent teams to lift their strength of schedule to get better rankings. It isn't like Chino isn't a power house on the public schools side of things, they just didn't recruit ballers like the private schools do. They also just got lucky to have a family of highly skilled basketball players that went to school there at the time, something they could build a team around, because nobody is gonna know your mind like your brother.
I remember when Holy Name, a private catholic school, had this monster Neal Fingleton (RIP)... they took what was a traditional Central Mass HS schedule and added in a few preps and high profile schools in the Northeast. So in short, things are probably more flexible as long as the rules allow it for their association.
They probably requested to be in like a tier 1 school so they could win the high school national title. In my school, we only played for a state championship. There was nothing above that...

Clearing in football means to send the ball out of dangerous area. may be out of the field, out of penalty area (kicking the ball long), or send it to the spectator. the term is "clearance", specifically used for that action. In Basket Ball, there's statistic like block, steal, and rebound. For goal keeper in football, it mostly clearance, any action to prevent a goal. So, if the defender do all the clearances, then goal keeper won't have the chance to show off. It happened before with Sebastiano Rossi (AC Milan in Sacchi's Era). He was a great goal keeper played for Milan, but then Milan had a solid defender, regard as the greatest defensive units of all time (Mauro Tassotti, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta and Paolo Maldini) and made Rossi to always had an easy job. even when Rossi save the day, people would considered it was just an easy save because the 4 defender in front of him do the job magnificently. being first choice goal keeper for almost 12 years in Milan, He won 12 titles, including 5 national championship, and 1994 champion league. But, when people talk about great goal keeper, he is hardly remembered.

Most notably Harrison Barnes for North Carolina, Bubu Palo for Iowa State, and Doug McDermott at Northern Iowa. That Ames team was loaded.

But not anymore.
I can't even go to a rivalry game hoping for a close, tough win in basketball or football.

Melo was really a 5’8 8th grader killing D1 bound seniors. That’s insane.
To be fair I'm sure most future NBA players were clowning people older than them in HS. But yeah, impressive even by those standards. The kid can ball
Doug Goldwater Yeah but he wasn’t just clowning any High Schoolers. He was clowning RJ Barret and that other dude who’s also in the NBA lol
He’s been playing older guys since he was 9 so he was used to it.
Also to be fair, PG is a position you don't need any height for. Mugsy was 5'3" and put up totally respectable PG stats against a whole league of active NBA players for the 6 seasons '90-'95. Someone who's 5'8 has 5 inches on that.
Why does PG not need height? They can succeed by:
1) not turning the ball over (low center of gravity = shorter dribbling height = harder to steal from)
2) stealing from opponents (low COG is probably useful here as well)
3) finding open guys to pass to
4) taking the occasional open jumper (where no one is close enough to block) or layup off of fast breaks. By only taking smart, open shots and otherwise making good passes, every possession can be good.
Did he not get in trouble because he played up a grade, instead of playing down a grade? Um, this 8th grader is whooping on a senior. It's ok, it's cool.

@@rfmmike6096 did they fall off during the ball brothers era? Before that I just remember mater dei dominating the three major sports (baseball, football and basketball)
Still confused as to how this “Public school” received that kind of playing schedule..
they were from California in a 4a division, so most of the teams in their division they played more than once, thus why they beat several teams that were ranked more than once, match that up with private schools padding their schedules with decent teams to lift their strength of schedule to get better rankings. It isn't like Chino isn't a power house on the public schools side of things, they just didn't recruit ballers like the private schools do. They also just got lucky to have a family of highly skilled basketball players that went to school there at the time, something they could build a team around, because nobody is gonna know your mind like your brother.
That's actually a really good question lol
I remember when Holy Name, a private catholic school, had this monster Neal Fingleton (RIP)... they took what was a traditional Central Mass HS schedule and added in a few preps and high profile schools in the Northeast. So in short, things are probably more flexible as long as the rules allow it for their association.
They probably requested to be in like a tier 1 school so they could win the high school national title. In my school, we only played for a state championship. There was nothing above that...

Can we just talk about how Onyeka Okongwu is currently the only Chino Hills player who has been in the NBA Playoffs, a Conference Semi Finals, and is on his way to be in a Conference Finals.

Um ya
@@AnshKumar-jw1bs it's like a superb goal keeper who looks so average because the defenders clear all the balls..
Yes. Yes we are
satri yanto is that a soccer term? Like I know what a goal keeper is, but what does clear the balls mean?
@@reese2105 it's an action when defender makes goal keeper do nothing. Everytime a ball comes threatening, the defenders clear them out.
All personal skills aside, these players work together. Idk if there was drama on the team, but it definitely doesn’t look like it made it on the court. That’s beautiful. Especially with brothers.
After the lead became,say,40,why doesn't it seem as if the bench got any run?🤔
There's nothing better than creative youth notwithstanding family and friends, playing hoop, kicking ass while having fun, and teasing the losing teams, eh. Creates motivation's to be better.
They need to make a movie about this
