They say that talent is only 2% of success, and that hard work is other 98%. While that certainly is true in many regards, there is only so much you can do if you’re not gifted. In basketball, you can be skilled, but you can’t learn to be tall or jump extremely high. Here is the list of players who won the genetic lottery, and are the biggest freaks of nature in basketball history.

Bill could guard Wilt better than anyone else though.
      That season Wilt averaged 50.4?
His 4 WORST games - 25, 28, 30, and 31 - were against Bill, and only *1* (62 IIRC, might haven been 61 or 63) was significantly above that season average.
Wilt averaged about *12* points worse against Bill than against the rest of the NBA that season - in other words, Wilt averaged almost *60* against centers not named Bill that season while averaging 40something vs Bill.
No, Bill didn't stop Wilt - but he sure slowed Wilt down.

@@bricefleckenstein9666 Bill Russell didn't slow down wilt chamberlain his team did!
One player was designated to run in front of Wilt (wilt without the ball) to slow him down, relying on wilt to not run right over him.
That got bill Russell time to reach wilt Chamberlain's favourite spots, to be fair to Bill Russell he played wilt one on one fairly.
If wilt got past Bill then the rest of the team would try and stop him and as a last measure he would be physically hacked, elbow to the face or body, the referees allowed this because his dominance might have effected the nba.
So Bill Russell might of took wilt chamberlain out of his comfort zone, but his team reduced his normal effectiveness by some questionable actions and with the unofficial support of the nba and its referees being biased against such a dominate force in professional basketball!
Wilt quipped when I dunked the ball I usually had the opposing team and the two referees holding on, or that's how I feel it was and many players agreeded with that remark!

@@allistermcginlay6476 EVERY TEAM at least doubled on Wilt a lot of the time - the Celtics did it LESS than anyone else.
They were content to let Bill play speed bump and slow Wilt down a little - or at least not let him get TOTALLY crazy - while the rest of the team largely stopped the rest of Wilt's team.
And the rest was ALSO done at least as much by the rest of the NBA - NOT just by or mostly by the Celtics.
Not saying you're wrong otherwise, "Hack-a-Wilt" caused rule changes that Shaq later got help from as well for similar reasons.

"GOATness" aside, MJ is the perfect physical specimen in basketball. His built is just big enough to be both strong and finesse. His fundamentals is unmatched. He has huge, huge hands that allowed him to do all his tricks in the air coupled with arguably the greatest/longest hangtime in history. He was not as fast as many super athletes, but once he hit you with his jab step, there is no chasing him from the wing. chamberlain was one of the most premier athletes of all time. Was 6 feet tall by age 10 and 6-11 as a freshman In high school. Before basketball he did track and field. he high jumped 6ft 6 in. He could long jump 22 feet. Was an American globe trotter before the warriors. In the NBA had a 50in vertical. Due to being a terrible free throw he used this vertical to dunk his free throws. Many people remember his 100 point game but forget that he once got 55 rebounds over Bill Russell. 1 season in which he lead in assists. 1 season he averaged 50+ points. 4 seasons averaging 40+ points. 10 seasons in which he averaged 20+ rebounds. He never fouled out of a game in 17 seasons. In his 60s it was reported he still benched 400+ pounds. The best stat though? He had a season in which he played every single minute of every single game including overtime except for one in which he was off court for 6 minutes.

    • @bricefleckenstein9666

There is no evidence of a 50 inch vertical - but a big man having the probable 44-45 he DID have was still impressive.
He is only documented to have dunked free throws ONCE during COLLEGE in his freshman year (though there probably were other times before the practice was outlawed by the NCAA, and potentially might have been times in practice while he was with the Warriors before the NBA outlawed it).

The broken toe was straight up - but I only remember that story originating from the person it happened to (repeated by others that didn't actually see it), and I have to wonder if the toe was actually dislocated not broken.
A LOT of the other "Wilt is very strong" stories though ARE documented with multiple witnesses, and a LOT of folks talk about Wilt just "picking them up like they were a child" and such.

Dennis is NOT the GOAT of rebounding - but he was the best of his time during his prime.
I'd put him probably 4'th all time WHEN HE WAS ON, after pace adjustments for Wilt Bill and Nate - and it's a tough call vs Jerry Lucas.
Keep in mind though that Dennis only concentrated on rebounding for about HALF of his career, the others did it for ALL of theirs.

@@bricefleckenstein9666 considering Dennis is shorter than wilt and most centers his rebounding is impressive . Also there were much fewer rebounds in the slower paced 90s compared to the 60s

      @bricefleckenstein9666 2 года назад +1

@@ogmusik2549 During the last half of his career, when he concentrated on rebounding and defense, Dennis was one of the best rebounders of all time - definitely Top 5 and I usually rank him 3'd behind ONLY Wilt and Bill (Nate Thurmond and Jerry Lucas being the others in the Top 5 IMO).
He wasn't all THAT short though - about 2 inches shorter than Bill.
He'd rank a lot higher on all the lists if he'd pushed for rebounds his entire career like Bill and Wilt did.
During his rebounding prime, Dennis was the best rebounder of his era - but even adjusting for shot pace, his prime still fell a LITTLE short of Wilt and Bill.
Close enough to argue the point though!
Now, if we were talking about "most skilled rebounder of all time", Dennis probably wins the title.
