For those who never saw him play or caught him at the tail end of his career and look at his overall career stats and wonder why Kobe gets so much adulation and love from the older generation, let me give you some context. Between 1999 and 2013 (his starter and pre-achilles tear years in the NBA), Kobe averaged 27, 6 and 5, 5 rings, 2 FMVPs, 11 first teams, 9 defensive first teams all while being must see TV every single night and respecting the fans by trying to play every game he could. That is one of the greatest 15 year stretches in basketball history and that is why he gets so much love and respect.

Kobe is the most skilled player ever. He couldn’t jump the highest he wasn’t the fastest or the strongest. But he maximized all of his gift and he was a threat anytime stepped on the court.

The two biggest reasons for Kobe not surpassing Jordan are
    1) The Colorado situation
    2) The vetoed Chris Paul trade

Him having way less FMVPs is definitely the biggest reason

Kobe wasn't just a great basketball player but the way he carried himself was a thing of beauty

My first nba game with my brother before he left for Afghanistan was Warrior/Laker game. At that time, the warriors were so bad they had to promote "family special days" where lower level seats were discounted and a free hit dog was included with the ticket. I used to complain to my brother that why are we here when we know our team (warriors) would lose horribly to the Lakers, but my brother says "Its about witnessing greatness of the game even at the expense of our team." Not only was Kobe a great basketball player, but he was humble and classy.
