- 2003 Ghent-Wevelgem, Mario Cipollini shows his disdain for a race-referee by throwing two (2) water bottles at him. Later, a driver and cameraman aboard a motorbike crash in front of Cipo.
Love how Phil starts commenting on how good a shot it was instead of addressing Cipollini's temper tantrum! ''Good shot, very good shot!''

After crossing the line in the third group, World Champion Mario Cipollini was immediately disqualified by the commissaires and fined 200 Swiss francs for throwing two water bottles at a BWB representative, when the latter tried to pass him with 37 km to go.
Cipollini responded, "You have to put yourself in my position. I was very angry. I had just fallen and was trying to catch the leading group and all I could hear was this honking behind me. When he overtook me I wasn't thinking."

A couple ???!!! He's the leader in the number of stages win for the tour of Italy (42 ) 12 stages at the tour de france 3 at the tour of spain. won 3 time the ranking by point at the of Italy. Won 3 times Grand-Wevelgmen once Milan-San Remo. Won champion of Italy and one world championship ! As far as not finishing a tour most sprinters never do ! And you what have you done ??

@ashatbracks The commentators probably didn't have a clear look at the motorcycle when it crashed, because they comment 'live', which means that they can't watch a replay and make comments afterwards.
@SuperWeng10 Thats true and i absolutely agree with ya. Cipo is also the cyclist with the longest gap between victories: his first win as pro in 1989 and his las in 2005 and of course a lot in between.
Gilbert had his first win in 2004 and his final win in 2022.
Probably about 40-50km/h or so (25-30mph). Which doesn't sound like much, but they do that for a few hundred kilometers each day.
Cipo's accuracy with a water bottle is awesome! It wasn't the same commissar that crashed, though. Different motorcycles is obvious. One had saddlebags the other didn't.

No, he fell later. He threw the bottle because the ref cut him off as he was trying to get closer to his team car to talk to them.
Mario Cipollini is one of my biggest IDOLS. He's got attitude. And it seems that he can ride his bike as well.

OK so Cipo has a giant ego and is a decent bike racer (more than decent, hence the world champ stripes) but you either love him or you love to hate him. Either way more bike racers should be like him instead of boring Lances. EMOTION PLEASE. Looking forward to Sagan winning a few more and growing an even bigger ego. He, like Cipo, deserves it!
@SuperWeng10 He had a good reason to do that though. Sprinters typically have "shorter" muscle fibers and when you climb alot you make them longer which has a negative impact on your sprint ;)
Cipollini was in a brakeaway or he was chasing the brakeaway. The motorcycling in red is a referee on a motorcycle and he beebed so that Cipollini should make way and he didn't like that at all. I saw this live on eurosport.
have you ever been in a rolling enclosure bike race with motor cycle support? the motor is coming from behind, that means he can see everything whereas Mario has his back to the bike - he can't see him. the motor has to watch out for the rider - the rider has right of way - not the other way around. Also, look what happens to the motor further down the road - he dumps the bike. the guy is clearly out of it. if all you can do is name call then clearly you have no argument.
I've thrown bottles at cars who've cut me off - but haven't made one crash yet - great shot!

also a charismatic rider, the only problem with him finishing the TDF he always quit once the elevation goes up unlike other Sprinters they always finish the tour..
not sure if he only got paid just to ride the first week of the TDF though...

The referee should know better than to go between a rider and the team car. The rider is there for a reason, not just to chat. Cipo probably needed to get his hair fixed or a refill of 30-year-old scotch in his bottle.
I can see Cipo being really pissed off, the ref created a potentially dangerous situation. Cipo was wrong to throw the bottle (although I would have done the same thing, maybe even whacked the idiot on the side of his helmet) and the ref was wrong to ride how he did.

Well clearly the motorist isn't aware of his surroundings. He has a head-set on so if he's using it, he clearing isn't aware. And when you are riding around 40km/h, it fucking ticks you off especially when the guy didn't even care to honk or signal to warn he's going to over take him.
Look at it this way, the motorist isn't a cyclist. He doesn't know, nor can predict what 'line' a cyclist will take. Resulting into that crash later in the video.

If the same guy at the end who crashed was the same guy Cipo threw the water bottles at, that has to be one of the most ironic and instant karma moments in sports history hahaha.
@OzKid given newtons 3rd law, action-reaction, he should have sprinted in front of the moto and then thrown it backwards as to push him forward. But throwing it in front of him probably negated the weight loss.

If cippo didnt dope heavily his whole career he never would have advanced past cat 1 amateur.
Cycling was and still is more doped than WWE or NFL football.
Funny thing is Mario never went to his team car after the referee went by. In any case I doubt a rider could get away with this nowadays- not even a star rider. I loved watching Chippo but he should have been thrown out of the race immediately for this.

They're not. They're referees making sure the rules are followed and no one is cheating plus thanks to their recording we get to watch the event live on tv. Like bikes they are agile unlike cars.

Fine the race referree not the racer . Those idiots on motorcycles are insanely dangerous and should not be allowed to get so close to the riders .

Those motorcycles seem to the biggest threat to the racers...I would like to see statistics on motorcyle and racer involved incidents. Seems ridiculous to me....good on Mario for nailing that idiot on the motorbike.

@cocie4en4 You don't know anything about cycling, don't you? First of all, cycling is the hardest sport on earth. Second, the water bottles are picked up by the fans but if they don't they are made of organic materials that decompose.

i don't blame chipo in the least - the guy on the motor bike was way out of line coming in between mario and the team car. you guys that are siding with the motor bike have a screw loose - he could have easily taken mario out - even killed him. wake up!
sono d'accordo, in questo momento mark è il piu' forte, anche se in giro non ci sono grandi avversari. l'unico che lo poteva battere in qualche sprint è petacchi , ma non è al tour. comunque mark è molto forte..
