  • If it hadn't been for a car crash at 3 a.m. on spring night in 2008, Jordan Grahm might not be alive. Over 400 pounds & squeezed into a 5XL, Jordan was on the road towards eating himself to death.

Growing up, Jordan was always big and the subject of teasing from other children. "Kids can be cruel," he says. "I was subject to ridicule and bullying, which caused me to develop a very defensive and protective state of mind."
When Jordan was in the ninth grade, his parents divorced. He blamed himself, and his weight soared. It wasn't until he became a football lineman that his 5-foot-9, 290-pound frame was put to good use. Then, tragedy struck.
"When I was 14, my mom suddenly passed away," he says. "I'll never forget the moment I heard the news. I was in complete shock." The search for "Why?" provided no answers and drove Jordan further into despair.
"Food became my outlet-my coping mechanism for dealing with my depression," he says. "I didn't care about my future." By the end of his senior year of high school, Jordan weighed 400 pounds.
He doesn't know how heavy he became, because after graduation, he stopped tracking his weight. "Doctors told me I would die young from obesity-related complications; I told them, 'If that happens, then so be it,'" he says.
It wasn't until after his accident that Jordan had a change of heart.
Why Was Your Accident A Wake-Up Call?
On March 30, 2008, I was in a car collision, and it took five guys to lift me up on the stretcher. The next day, I went for an MRI and barely fit inside the machine. They almost had to send me to a special version that is bigger than normal. That day, I decided that I'd had enough. I decided I had to change the way I lived and ate, and I started exercising. I decided I was worth the hard work and dedication that it would take to improve my future.
No matter how hard it would become, I vowed never to give up. I realized there was no room for excuses, self-pity, or fear. The pain of what had to be done could never match the pain I felt from the way I was living.
What Were The First Steps You Took To Transform Your Life?
I started out walking my little Boston terrier, Blackberry. It took me an hour to walk her one mile-down and back up a hill. After that mile, everything hurt. I felt so uncomfortable. But I stuck with it, and we were eventually running 4 miles a day six days a week. When I thought about quitting back then, I knew I had to do this not only for myself, but for my dog, too!
I lost 100 pounds just from walking. While on vacation in Las Vegas, I ventured into the hotel gym. I got to work, hoping that nobody would be around. Soon after, a few folks joined in. Instead of laughing at me and reacting the way I thought they would, they encouraged me.
When I got home, I joined a local gym. If people thought I was out of place or had negative thoughts, that would be their problem. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone for my own good.

I actually stopped the bullying and abuse a bit back in high school. It’s not cool to pick on people. I was abused as a child by my father so I didn’t take people abusing eachother well. Have eachothers backs and stop the bully’s now matter how big they are.

This guys story is so close to mine, it's actually insane.
My dad died in 2008, when I was 10 years old. Just like Jordan, I kinda just shut down. Before, I was relatively healthy. I played baseball in school and such. But after then, literally everything went downhill. I rapidly gained weight. I would eat to cope. I gave up on life. I didn't really care about anything. I went through school with no friends due to my weight. I gave up on school too. I didn't do my work, I missed over a month of school and I got truancy on two occasions. But it didn't matter what happened, because I didn't really care. I made it up to the 10th grade, after going to summer school twice. Midway through, my mom and the school came up with the idea to transfer me to online school. So that's what happened. It was working pretty good for the first week or so, but eventually I found out how easy it was to cheat on it, and that turned into just not doing any of the work at all. They kicked me out, and I never really went back to school. So I suppose I technically dropped out of school.
Anyways, fast forward to the beginning of last year. I was at my biggest weight of 323 pounds at 17 years old. I had to go into the hospital for appendicitis, and they admitted me for an appendectomy. After the procedure was finished, the doctor came in and basically told me the surgery was more difficult that it should have been due to my weight and he recommended to get gastric bypass surgery. Right then I kinda just woke up and said to myself that I had to change. So that's exactly what I done. After I had recovered from surgery. I immediately changed my diet. I cut down my portion sizes, stopped eating fast food and junk food, sugar, etc. It was working. I lost over 50 pounds just by doing that. Then I switched to the Keto diet, and now I've lost over 100 pounds.
After losing so much weight, I basically gained my life back. I got my GED, I got a job, I actually started making friends, my anxiety and depression almost completely went away. Life is pretty amazing right now, and it's all due to me losing weight. Never would have thought that my weight was holding me back so much.
If anyone out there is reading this and thinking they can't do it, trust me, you can. If I can do it, you can too. Don't give up. Never stop fighting. You can do it. I believe in you.

That leads me to a question; do you have any tips on what I should do at the gym just for general weight loss, until I get to a point to build muscle and such. I kinda have just been doing a little bit of everything the three times I've went so far.

DubstepEditzz I know I'm not Jordan but I've lost weight myself. 125 lbs to date and my biggest tip is to start off lower and upper body days. Start off with weights that you can handle and gradually go up in weight from there. I eventually started to focus on certain muscle groups for each day and I'm looking into strength training like Jordan but you're going into the right direction. The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.

Just a tip, avoid sugar completely but do NOT cut fat out of your diet. Eat low carbs instead. Fat is actually essential for testosterone production. If you cut fat out of your diet you wont lose as much weight as a low carb diet. Even worse, without fats for proper testosterone production, youll drastically increase the chances of erectile disfunction aswell as lose muscle mass (which you need in order to burn maximum calories). I reccomend a ketogenic diet. Be sure to research it thoroughly before you start it though. It can be dangerous if done incorrectly for extended periods of time. Its pretty miserable for the 1st week or 2 but gets easier once your body learns to burn fat for energy instead of carbs. At that point the weight just flies right off aslong as you dont mess up the diet.

Hey, you can be kind & also encourage people who are struggling with their weight and body image. Bullying/Picking on them only showcases how emotionally stunted you are as a person. And don't rebut with the "Tough Love" nonsensical approach. That's case by case. And remember not every portent of advice is 100% the correct course of action taken.
Some folks thrive off the strict drill sergeant guidelines.
Others flourish when calmly and quietly assisted.
Learn to read the room & to also recognize that not every person is the same cookie cutter mold personality.

This spoke to me so much. I had always been a big girl. When I was 13, my dad died from complications of diabetes. I had seen the bad that came with it. I ballooned after that. My highest was 269 (I'm only 5'1'). I eventually had a son, who is now 5. Problem was that I was going down the same path my dad was. I turned myself around and lost about 125 lbs and full of muscle. I know too well about using food as a coping mechanism and like Jordan, I didn't see myself of deserving something better. So glad he pulled himself out of the darkness.

I am really excited about it and feel like I can do this but watching this type of video is so inspirational, as are the comments like yours!! As long as I’m this heavy I am going to have a super difficult time walking like a normal person again and I really want to. I want to play with my grandchildren rather than just watching them play. SkullflowerEOS its not that simple when you're skinny and used to eating small amounts. Its hard to eat when you're not hungry and keep eating when you can hardly chew because you just don't want to and feel sick. I gradually made myself eat more, counted my calories and increased it gradually (with the right foods) obviously and man it was tough. Still now I find it tough sometimes and so easy to slip back into just eating a basic amount of food. Training your stomach to get used to eating more is not simple.

Lol, my dad walks our dog between 5-7 miles a day, and she's 11. When she was younger it could be up to 10 miles per day. She's actually very slim (but also a finnicky eater) with no muscle.
Then again she's a cattle dog, so she's built to run/herd. I can't imagine a Boston Terrier holding out for 4 miles!

I know Americans are too embarrassed to admit that they're wrong not using the Metric system. So they project the blame onto communists. They're too embarrassed to admit that they voted for the wrong president. So they project the blame to Russians.
This is a joke, coming from a fellow American. I'm sure you're edgy little self can learn some history now, seeing that the whole world except America uses the metric system.
Don't be butt hurt, fellow American.
Ugh I swear, this is why people treat America as a joke...

My dad's story is basically the opposite of this. He was in a car crash that destroyed his ankle and it wasn't his fault. We didn't sue though because she was really poor and we felt bad. Then he couldn't work out anymore without putting his ankle through hell. Even if he isn't working out his ankle still hurts. Now he rarely works out and he is gaining lots of weight.
