  • Lyss underwent bariatric surgery, but it wasn't enough. To shed over 200 pounds, she first had to overcome a lifetime of poor eating habits.

For Lyss Remaly, weight was always an issue. "I was definitely that cute baby who looked like I had rubber bands on my wrists and arms," she says. "It's just not as attractive when you're 18."
At age 4, Lyss was already seeing a nutritionist for her diet and health issues. Family history played a role, but so did eating habits. "As much as I want to blame genetics, it's not like I helped the situation any," she says. "Yes my dad is a bigger guy, and all five of us kids are bigger, but I was also a closet eater. I hid what I ate-I'd hit the drive-thru and maybe eat four Whoppers and fries in my car before going home for dinner. I kept that horrible behavior going for years."
For years, the actress, jokester, and self-proclaimed funny girl hid behind jokes and her vivacious personality, until an embarrassing wake-up call forced Lyss to listen to her body.
    This is Lyss' story.

In the Netherlands having a morbidly obese child is considered child abuse and parents have to comply with enforcing a diet and taking their children for regular exercise sessions, otherwise they risk having their child placed in a foster family.

""there is no magic pill. you have to work EVERY single day. Just like an alcoholic will have to work hard EVERY SINGLE DAY to not have one drink". that really hit for me. i've had bad eating habits and been a bit overweight, i've suffered from an eating disorder for a few years now and i still have to work hard every. single. day.
If you're suffering from something, there is always help out there. But YOU are going to have to be the one who does it.

Lauren Claire So true. My addiction is sugar. I’m 56 years old and I’ve used it my most of my life to fill a void. I’m now aware of why I eat sugary treats. I Lost 70 pounds and reversed my type 2 diabetes by giving up sugar. I didn’t want to get on medication. I reversed it in 3 months.
I went through a healing period in 2018 2019, releasing past trauma and I started eating sugar again, I can’t just stop at one! I work hard to control it every single day!!
2020 is my comeback!! Today is 1/7/20 and I’m setting intentions and I’m already seeing inches lost. 😊

I love this story. People think surgery is the easy way out. This story sheds light on the truth. First off, surgery only decreases the size of your stomach. It does nothing for your eating habits or your mental health. Which is why weight loss result variations are so vast. You see some people lose so much and some lose a little. Others gain half of it back. It’s not a magic pill! Like she said. That’s so true. I had the gastric sleeve. I was not obese all my life. I was a yo-yo dieter so I was somewhat slightly overweight and even sometimes normal weight until I had kids 3 of them and I hit 350 almost. I was in denial due to my pear shape and my culture supports bigger women. But I found that even though I didn’t have any health issues, I couldn’t walk for long, I couldn’t stand, I was in severe pain daily. No position was comfortable. After the sleeve I lost over 175 pounds. I am now 160. Muscular and fit.
Losing the weight took complete discipline and a lifetime change and modifications to my eating habits. I cut out processed foods and sugars completely from my diet. It’s been a couple years now. No sugars. I found sugar free alternatives. I eat proteins, good fats, veggies, very little fruits and a few starches. I work out religiously 4 days a week. And that’s how the weight has stayed off.
The truth is unless you address your food addictions, your bad health and eating habits, you will not lose much weight with surgery. The surgery takes off the first 50-70 pounds and the the real work begins. Not everyone can be successful on this diet. I’ve lost over 90 % of my excess weight. It takes dedication, consistency and hard work. But I couldn’t have done it without my gastric sleeve and God. Anyways great story.

So true! Sadly, two of my sisters have had the surgery and neither have reached a healthy weight. One of them has maintained some of her loss, though she's still a long way off. The other gained all her's back. It's been 4 years since their surgeries. They absolutely need to change the problem that causes their weight, though I don't know they will. I've always tried to maintain a good weight and health, so I'm thankful I'm not in that situation; though I have to work hard to keep from gaining too much, as well. I wish I could give them my determination, but sadly I can't. Thet have to be willing and have that determination for themselves.

You are an absolutely beautiful human, inside and out. Around 5 years ago I was at my heaviest at 176lbs. Doesn't sound overly huge, but I'm only 4'11. I was MASSIVE. I cut calories to 1000 a day and worked out twice a day. I dropped 56lbs and decided I was now the kind of person who could eat anything and not put on weight. How wrong I was. The weight piled back on and I'm now 163lbs after being a lazy, greedy pig for the last couple of years. I'm back at the gym and this time I'm eating well. Really well. The weight is slowly coming off again and I feel great. The key is sustainability, not quick results. I know this now. After watching this video, even though I don't know you I feel IMMENSELY proud of you. I have been the girl who was so big it held her back. I could hear comments in the street and feel the looks from people. All it made me want to do was bury my face in a burger because that was my comfort zone. For the last 15 years or so, ever since I was a teenager, I've been big. No more. I am determined, but your story has made me BELIEVE. You are truly one in a million. X

NEVER cut to 1000kcal a day for too long , you're gonna slow your metabolism and will get fucked by it. cut to 1500 EXTREME MINIMUM.
Bcoz your daily calories will drop to around 1300 kcal a day and when you get back to eat "normaly" 2000+- kcal it will not go back to there, will take several MONTH and you gain weight till your daily calories get normalize.
good lock with your weight loss.

Thank you for your sharing your story. I had bariatric surgery 4 years ago. People judge as if the surgery sucked up off your fat and you are all of a sudden thin. You said it perfectly; it is a daily challenge and a choice as to what to put in your mouth. I became a vegan which is a hard transition but kept looking for the strength to exercise. I love this video. I was very fat growing up and everyone thought I’d be a big boy when I grew up and then I became addicted to drugs and lost a lot of weight and loved having a six pack so when I gave up drugs I started lifting weights and dieting and I looked super good but I picked up a new addiction which was cutting myself. I cut alllllll over my body where I don’t like how I look!!! So basically my whole body!!!! Now I have massive scars everywhere and it stops me from being able to take my shirt off anywhere!!! It gets better!!!! I promise! Keep fighting cause you are you and you are perfect in so many ways!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Bravo! i had duodenal switch surgery in 2008 shortly after my 46th birthday. i wish I would've done it when i was a younger woman. you look fabulous! i spent my whole life with people telling me " your so beautiful if only you were thin"
well at 46 years old i finally realized #145 and I have maintained it for 9 years now. shedding #170 was the best thing I ever did for myself.
thank you for sharing your story. you are an amazing and beautiful young woman.

Lyss, if you're reading this, I just wanted to tell you that you are a beautiful person, inside and out. There's no escaping our deepest, darkest fears and struggles, and exercising to get in shape taught me that it's a way for us to confront those fears, accept our flaws, and strive to sculpt the best versions of ourselves through hard work and dedication. I'm so happy for you, and pray you'll keep moving forward.

I found a amazing Dr. in Raleigh NC the only one that would perform a weight loss surgery called the duodenal switch. I lost 146 pounds total and now I plan to hit the gym harder than ever. I am very happy for you. Watching this opened up some old wounds. I got to 250 and lost it without surgery (that was the easy route, can’t imagine going through the surgery). We differ in that I am an introvert but we grew up with similar school situations. I had my parents making me feel less then adequate, put the fork down, etc. Every day getting on the bus, hey here comes elephant. I made the decision to lose the weight in my early 40s. I developed the courage to then get out of a toxic marriage. We have a lot of parallel experiences, but some different outlooks afterwords. I learned that people can’t be trusted, can’t be asked for help. You want out of your crap pile, get up and take a shower and move forward. There isn’t going to be hand there to help you up so figure it out. My world is still as lonely, I am just healthier and fun-sized rather than Sam’s industrial sized 😀. I hope to someday find a way to trust people.

This woman is so honest and refreshing to listen to as she details her issues and weight loss journey. Gastric surgery for a lot of people can be the best option but it isn't a fix all if there are mental health issues due to a life time of being fat and you still have to exercise and learn to eat right or you will regain the weight + more. She takes total responsibility for her weight but I place a lot of blame on her parents. She was obese at a very young age back when the parents controlled what food was being purchased at the store, and had an influence over her being active. I get the feeling that this family being so close and loving also allowed her to do as she pleased because they loved her no matter what and didn't want to tell her "No" or feel like they were depriving her. They must of been heartbroken over her tormented life at school but did they ever seek professional help for her? She said she would sneak food to her room which her parents can not watch her 24/7 but what was she sneaking to her room? Cookies, cake, candy? If those things then shame on the parents for bringing the junk food in to the home when their daughter had a serious issue with food. If she is just sneaking bread, left overs from dinner, etc. then that's a whole other story. Parents would of had to keep all the food under lock and key which would of made her even more obsessed over food. I've watched this video twice as I really like her positive bubbly personality and find her very inspiring.

I am in tears...This is my story to a "T". Back in May 2007 I was 367lbs and heavy my whole life!!! It took 2 yrs and I lost 225lbs. I am down to around 142lbs. Been keeping it off for 11yrs now. I did not do any surgery. Came close..I was looking for an answer...something to fix me and get this weight off. I have found out now that being heavy is NOT about the food. It is not knowing how to live life without binging on food. Using the tools and resources even when I didn't feel like and felt too uncomfortable without my trigger foods. I feel like a million bucks. I feel like a barbie doll now. I am so empowered mentally and emotionally. This is sooooo worth it!!!! Thank you Lyss for your story and we can start saving lives and people no longer have to live a life of misery and start living a life of hope and passion beyond your wildest dreams!!!!!!

I don't know if I'll find anyone who'll accept me when I've lost all of the weight but I hope I do. I'm scared to face the loose skin and the scars. I have done it just with diet and exercise and it feels so amazing to be in control of my addiction once and for all. I've lost 70lbs in 4 months. I have a long way to go but I WILL do it. I was addicted to food, and believe me, it's an addiction. Unless you have experienced it and been in the thick of the sugar and carb addiction, it's hard to understand why people get as fat as they do. Thank you for sharing your story, Lyss. You made me cry and not feel so alone after all.

Incredible story. Most people don’t realize how difficult it is to be disciplined and consistent in the training and diet. One piece of advice that I have for people is once you develop the habit of consistent diet and training you sort of rewire your body to expect it if that makes sense.

Me and Lyss have very similar stories, when she was talking about her parents it really struck a chord. I’m not a bodybuilder yet but I’m well on the way. If anyone reading this is struggling, I promise you can do it. You just have to take the first step.

She’s such an inspiration. Love her story. I know one of the tools that help me along with working out is intermittent fasting I wish so many more people knew about this. I think it helps a lot.

Yes, intermittent fasting helped me lose weight as well and is a great tool but I just listened to a video that said you can't do serious body building if you're intermittent fasting. It said you needed to fuel you body more often when body building.

What an absolutely brilliant mother. Props to the lady for losing weight, that took a lot of work I'm sure, but mothers like this are rare.

Pseudonorm Same here. Gotta put the work in at this point. Had the surgery 4 years ago, lost 80lbs, stopped on a dime. Even with the surgery, eventually you gotta put the work in. I woke up today and told my self "it's time"

Great work and dedication on her part, I have a very similar story to her, minus the wealthy happy loving caring family and the surgery, I had an extremely abusive childhood. but I can understand everything that she was talking about. she was killing herself and luckily nothing ever happened to her, what made my ass change my habbits was getting a heart attack at the age of 17 I also have before and after pics for proof

Sorry you had it so rough BUT you've shown great strength of character and willingness to rise above your circumstances, so congratulations! I think your story may deserve more admiration because of that.

You're welcome, keep it up and you'll get far, life's nothing but a school where we get constantly tested and if we "get it" it becomes a lot easier. If you haven't read the book "The Secret" I highly recommend it, or any other dealing with the Law of Attraction (there are tons of videos about it here on YT, btw).

I have struggled off and on with my weight. Like you I have been overweight most of my life. My biggest weight was in middle school at 212 pounds. No one ever treated me with any dignity and I was tormented throughout middle school. You had support from your parents. I was actually picked on. And by my own mom😪 It mellowed down in HS as I fluctuated in weight off and on. It wasnt until I was 28 years old and started running(thought it was funny you mentioned you hate it...i love it!). I ran my first 5k in 2010 and won the women's section. The woman at the stand couldn't believe I came in first. It was so mean. Yea you can be a chubby girl and run fast. It wasn't till 2013 I lost about 90 pounds. So I was down to 145. To make a long story short I am back at my weight of 212...i had 2 kids and gained a lot of it back. I have been so disappointed in myself. I am slowly getting back out there, but it has been rough. You motivate me to start again. Thank you for encouraging me to be me, but to remember, my health is number one🙏💪
God bless you and you are so beautiful lady💪🙏🙏❤inside and out❤
