    Okay, allow me to nip this on the bud: I’m aware of Seiko’s varying SBDX/SBDB, or Automatic/Spring Drive options... and *yes,* there were mechanical Tuna’s before this (the earlier models used mechanical movements till they realized quartz was better suited for the task). These “Field Tuna’s” can be had at around *$500-700* if you’re lucky and that is the perfect rate for your general consumer (me). $2k+ for any other equivalent mechanical/spring drive alternative is out of the ball park for a lot of folks, so *this* is the “Automatic Tuna” we’ve all been wanting (practically, realistically... In every sense).

    Mahalo, Patrick, for taking the time on the reply on my question. I enjoy your videos on Seiko watches. Seiko, is to my opinion some of the best time pieces for the money. Again thanks, and keep up the great work on your research on Seiko watches.

    Great looking variation on the Tuna. Like most modern Seikos, I think it's way too big, objectively, even for a tool watch. It's especially cool that the dial and indices look a lot like the Sinn104, with a similar overall color scheme.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      They do love their large watches. The Tuna has always been this big though, and it’s been around since the mid-seventies.

    Great video, Pat! Nice to see you back. I'm embarrassed to say it took me until now to discover your new channel. I wanted to say that I had been a little put off with Seiko lately. Mainly due to their alignment issues on A LOT of their lower end divers. However, the SLA017 62MAS Reissue peaked my interest and I, subsequently, discovered the SARX055 and SARY085. All I can say is wow, just WOW! The SARX055 and the SLA017 is a little pricey but maybe you can do a review on the "Star Bar" SARY085.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      Mmm, everyone's bringing up that SARY085 to me... I wish I knew about it sooner. That's honestly the best looking model to date. No worries Jason! Just glad you found me here. Plenty back-catalogue for your now.

  • @bolandjd
    @bolandjd 6 лет назад +2

    Great review. Totally speculation on my part, but I'm guess that the shiny finish on the face is so that you can use the watch to reflect sunlight for signaling aircraft or across mountain tops. Kind of old school, but so is the compass bezel and the signals on the back of the watch. Most field watches have subdued finishes because of their military heritage, but for a non-military watch intended for exploration and hiking, there's really no need to be tactical to avoid giving away your position.

    Horology is a hobby. We make it our hobby cos it's fun and it makes us happy. A good hobby is one that we can share with many people, so it should not be expensive, and within the means of the regular people.
    The objective of horology is making time-pieces that tell a good time minus the marketers so that it's maintained at an affordable hobby for more people. That's what we mean by fun.
    For me, a good time-piece is one with the simplest mechanism and robust, but, able to tell reasonably good time. You need not service it unless it's broken. It cost almost nothing to regulate it if need be. Enjoy.

  • @Lee_K_5555

    Excellent, thorough review as usual, Patrick!
    What I like about the Fieldmaster: pure white lume, unlike the current SBBN03x Tunas, which have a greenish tint to them. Sapphire crystal (Seiko is really stubborn about using Hardlex from the SKX up to the MM300), and the older style Tuna hands rather than the new handset which is seen in the 62MAS clones and Samurai. I have the same size wrist as you do and I think my Tuna fits just fine with the same dimensions as the Fieldmaster.
    21mm lug width? That's really curious because the Tunas are 22mm. I The 6R15 movement is Seiko's upper mid-level movement but at 3 Hz (21,600 BPH), I don't feel it's competitive at this price point with the ETA 2424-2, Soprod A-10, Sellita SW-200, Miyota 9015, and the STP 1-11 -- all of which are 4 Hz (28,800 BPH) movements. Oh well. This is a point that sticks in the craw of many Seiko enthusiasts and we wish aloud for them to bring the 8L35 from the MM300 into the lower price tiers. I have a 6R15 in a Sumo and its just okay, and not noticeably any better than the 4R36 in the Turtle, Monster, or Samurai. Ten more hours of power reserve is not strong enough justification, in my opinion. At least Swatch (Hamilton, Tissot) reduced the beat of the ETA 2824 to give 80 hours of power reserve in the Powermatic series of movements that this Fieldmaster competes in.
    Finally, I just smile when I see compass bezels on a watch and admire them as quaint relics from the past. Yes, I know about the trick in finding one's general direction using the sun but as a person who is in the field almost daily as a member of my state's Search and Rescue team, these compass bezels are about as useless as mammary glands on the proverbial boar. Seriously, if you need a compass to tell which way you need to go to find yourself out of the woods, use the compass app on your smartphone. It's infinitely more accurate and the phone can save your life if you conserve battery power because the pings it produces at the cell towers will allow S&R teams to come find you in an emergency.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      That was an oversight on my part: I do love how they maintain the older handset of the Tuna line and not the clunky handset of the current. Sapphire is always welcome... Heck, there isn’t a thing I dislike about this piece. It’s a great daily wearer. Haha, and should you ever need a compass, it’s there! I just received a Seiko Alpinist SBCJ021 with another compass... Much more discreet in form factor however, I find the internal compass a better option.

    If you like the look of the Tuna but it's too big for your wrist the Baby tuna is an option. They are still fairly big but just not as big. I think they measure around 44 mm or so. They look very much the same. I tried one on at my local watch store and loved it but I'm trying to resist the urge of buying another watch before I sell a few of the ones I own. The Baby tuna I tried on had a 4R35 but I think they also come in quartz. Quality piece just like the one you had in your hands.

    Mr. Market, Seiko sells a tuna with the 8l35 and the springdrive

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      *Marlett, and yes, I know; but those are vastly more expensive. These can be had around $500-700 for a “Tuna” with a 6r15.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      Yes Z, but it’s most direct comparison is the similarly constructed/cost SBBN series of Diving Tuna’s. I’ll mention the SBDB when I get one for review. Spring Drive gets *so much* grief... I have yet owned one, so I can’t talk on it with any real insight.

    Great video as always. Consistently superb content. I really like this watch, unfortunately, I have a 6 3/4" wrist so too big. Love the attention to detail on the case. But why Seiko, why did they use 21mm?? There are starting to be a few more option, but personally I would just cram in a 22mm, or this would be a great contender or an Erica Original. Thanks, cheers.

      Steve, you hit that right on the head... The MN Strap is the *perfect* fit on this... Looks so good. However, this piece is no longer in my collection! Sent it to my dad. He loved the look of it... We had a little trade going though: one 6r15 for another.

      Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett As a matter of fact I have several parachute packs that I bought for a project and they have the original elastic straps. I would be happy to send you a set. It wouldn't be as nice as Erika's but more along the lines of maybe the originals.

  • @WrongTimeWatch
    @WrongTimeWatch 6 лет назад +1

    I like the style of this watch, but $700 is a bit too steep for me. Have you handled a baby tuna, SRP637,9,41? How do they compare?

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      So, relative to the SBBN offerings, these can be had at a lesser rate with an auto-mechanical movement. To me, that was a bargain, however watches with a 6r15 can be had for less, sure. Never held a "Baby" Tuna, couldn't rightly compare the two. Those guys are gaining in popularity though... Aren't they based off the Monster *and* Tuna, roughly?

    • @WrongTimeWatch
      @WrongTimeWatch 6 лет назад +1

      Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett yea I would say the baby tuna looks like a Monster Tuna combo, which sounds like a fast food order

    I was so scared to watch this video. Why? Cuz there's a high degree I will want to get one too!
    21mm?! Why!? Why!? Why!?
    I can deal with 21mm, I have a Junghans with 21mm. Not a deal breaker, but it completely baffles me why 21mn?! Seiko just about never does 21mm, usually 22mm and 20mm.
    This probably the best use of the Tuna case design outside of the original dive use. And i like the EXECUTION.
    Not that the quartz movement in the Tunas aren't good, but, this is pretty much the only way to get an automatic movement in a Tuna design without breaking the bank on Spring Drive and not to mention going even larger in case size with the Spring Drive versions.
    As with the 48mm case size. Hey, Seiko should be known for having great incredibly well designed watch cases of many sizes that all seem to fit most wrists very surprisingly well and comfortable. Just something in the way it is shaped and sits on the wrist always seems to work IMHO.
    Unless you are seriously objectionable to the notion of a large watch size on your wrist, you should really give this watch, or any 48mm Tuna, a chance. It's basically a 48mm round. People should realize it really is not THAT big. Hell, if you're comfortable with 39mm to 42mm sizes, you should know they average around 48mm lug to lug as well, which really is the true measure if a watch will fit on your wrist well or not. There's always room left to right and 3 to 9, not always top to bottom and 12 to 6 and lug to lug.
    As with the approximate 14mm thickness. Shit, that's nothing. So many of the Presage watches are 14mm already. Seriously, Tuna case design sits surprisingly flat and low to the wrist.. They have nice presence but hardly overbearing nor objectionable. Well, for me at least on my 7.25" wrist.
    Yes, damn hard to find these. I only know one or two places, but the lesser expensive one will. Be closed for a whole month till early January 2018?! I guess I can let the thought simmer a bit to see if I really want one. Hmmm.. Going to be hard to ignore of and when this seed planted starts to bud.
    Thanks for this video!

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, *14mm thick* for a tool watch is just fine. It’s crazy how so many of Seiko’s watches outside of their toolier designs are that thick, you’re absolutely right there... Yes, yeah and duh, try and Tuna people! It’s a great watch from the brand. Actually, I’ve been noticing an upturn in SBBN prices, for the iterations just before the current gen. It’s crazy, but they’re lvling out higher now at auction/forum. -_- may need to get my SBBN017 sooner than I thought.

      It really is... Made me rethink "big watches," and now I need another, haha. I sent the Field Tuna over to my dad in a trade: one *6r15 for another 6r15.* He saw the watch in my tutorial for Erika's Originals and told me he loved it, so it's his now. I have a particularly rare Tuna in mind, but boy will it be hard to track down...

    Most Seiko guys will tell you that because of the screw back, that is not a "tuna". Baby tuna yes, but not a Tuna they are very specific/snobby about it. It has to have a 1 piece case to be a Tuna.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +2

      Ohhh boy, wait till they all find this video (thanks for the heads up). They went with the right choice here, utilizing a screw on case back: the monobloc case design is better suited for their Tuna divers.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      I prefer the domed crystal on your model... Also, the monobloc case is arguably more resilient. However, the lume/features are all on par otherwise. Bi-Directional as opposed to Unidirectional bezel... Honestly, two separate beasts aside from their similar case designs. Both movements are extraordinary, whether you wanted mechanical or quartz.

    If the case is 48mm from shroud to shroud, and the lugs extend 2-3 mm from the shroud, how can the lug to lug possibly be 47mm?

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      The shroud is round and the lugs are at what would be the corners of a (much smaller) square case. The shroud itself is larger in diameter than the overall case. You can visually see the shrouds' dimensions - and it being longer, from shroud end-to-end - on camera.
