    Back in late 1968, I asked a friend of mine to bring back a Seiko Watch from Japan when he went there on R&R from Vietnam. We were both assigned to the 20th Special Operation Squadron, USAF stationed at Nha Trang, Vietnam. I gave him a $100, and I told him to get something nice and flashy. All I asked was that it be an automatic with a day/date display.
    After two weeks in Japan, he brought me back the most beautiful Seiko I ever saw. It was gold in a chronometer/diver case with an automatic, 23 jewel movement. The case was 12K gold back and all. On the back, the case lid was engraved with two diving dolphins opposing each other. He told me the name of the watch was "The Diving Dolphins".
    He said he bought the watch wholesale for 60,000 jen at the Seiko factory, and he gave
    $40 back.
    This watch was absolutely too beautiful to wear especially flying as a gunner on a UH-1F helicopter and running both sides of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. I always kept it locked up in my B-4 bag and I kept it locked in a metal locker. At any rate, the watch was stolen shortly before I came back to the US in 1969.
    I would like to know if anyone else might know of such a Seiko. My friend told me it was only made for the Japanese market. I have owned Seiko Watches since 1968 going on 55 years. Most of my buddies from Vietnam do the same.

      @@wristaction Any help will be appreciated in finding out some history on this watch. I do know Seiko had only entered the diving watch market in 1966, so this must have been an experimental model. To my knowledge, it was never offered in the US market. I always regretted losing it. My friend went to a special effort to get it for me, and he certainly exceeded my wildest dreams in finding such a beautiful watch. I regretted its loss so much when I got back to The US I bought a 10K gold Longine 5 Star Admiral day/date watch. I still have it, but it never took the place of the Seiko Diving Watch.

      @@ronwinkles2601 I have posted a message on a forum. It seems that the 2 opposing dolphins is throwing people off. Can you give more details on the case, for example the shape, and did it have a bezel, any other buttons apart from the crown, any extra info will be useful. Also, was the day/date in English or Japanese? Is it similar to the 6216: www.hubcityvintage.com/archives/1967-seiko-6216-9000-seikomatic-39j-baby-grand
      or the 6217:

    Love my pepsi samurai. My first real watch. My now wife bought it for me when the rerelease came out. It will never leave my collection as it was worn on my wedding day, and in the delivery room the day my son was born. Threw on a sapphire crystal and added a strapcode hexad bracelet (strongly recommended doing both, at LEAST the sapphire crystal for more resilience). really feels like a luxury piece. Seiko club is like a family! Blessings

  • @drticzon

    The Pogue should have been the #1 watch. It dial’s Orange color with the Pepsi ring is very unique, and could be recognized from across the room. Also, since it was the only watch that was used in space (first Automatic Chronograph in space), makes it’s a special watch in history.

    @gbtriumph3216 5 лет назад +5

    The "depth rating" is only a measurement. It does NOT mean how deep you can immerse the watch during a swimming dive. It ONLY represents PSI. Pounds per Square Inch. Static pressure resistance test. Non-static is a person wearing it and moving around. A 30M watch you may get away with ACCIDENTALLY washing dishes. A 100M rated watch can be worn in gentle swimming. 200M means you can go snorkeling, skin diving, and swimming robustly. 300M is SCUBA (Air Tank) dive rated. Greater numbers, the more robust.

      Gagarin wasn't wearing a Vostok. People get this incorrect a lot simply because his capsule was called "Vostok 1". He wore the standard soviet issue 17-jewel Sturmanskie (made by First Moscow Watch Factory). The Sturmanskie was a special issue watch for Soviet Air Force pilots only.

    Glad you showed the sea urchin, it’s a cool watch with a cool name. You know a 100 m rating doesn’t mean it can actually go that deep, right? Rule of thumb is you can go swimming with a 100m, scuba diving with a 200m, and pretty much anything with a 300m

    • @wristaction
      @wristaction  6 лет назад +5

      Hi Jeffry. You're pretty much correct. It was watch fans that came up with the nicknames, not Seiko themselves, although they have started to acknowledge the unofficial nicknames now in some of their marketing.
      The Alpinist and Spirit are as far as I now the only two watches that Seiko have named themselves.
