The Day/Date function is very important. When working off shore or in the woods camping, it is very easy to loose track of the day and the date. Trust me on this one.
Seiko are probably the only watch brand I can think of that somehow turn their faults in to "character". Seiko is cool and lots of people dont mind the misalignment or lack of hacking/hand winding on this watch. Like having a Land Rover Defender with no air con or electric windows.
FatSamEIE - Well said, car analogy brought a smile to my face as I was watching this vid. The memory of my Datsun 240Z first production model (1970) came to mind, only came with 4 speed, no air or p windows. Another gem of Japanese design. Worth big money now.
Marty, that really means a lot! Thank you. To actually have someone comment on the writing must mean that something has been done right haha. I really appreciate it, man
Love the review, IDGuy, love it, love it, love it. The SKX009 was my first automatic dive watch, and what truly drew me in was the affordability. Once I had my foot in the door, my addiction to watches and Seiko divers began. From my experience, the SKX’s relatively conservative appearance for a Seiko diver appearance makes it a far bigger crowd pleaser. I owned a Seiko Samurai, a Turtle, a Tuna briefly, and a Sumo. While those are phenomenal higher end watches that appeal more to enthusiasts who want to shell out more money and are willing to step out of the SKX comfort zone in lieu of a more individualistic design, they are no where near as multi-situational versatile with their relatively provocative appearances. The SKX’s lug-to-lug distance of 46mm also makes it suit a far greater breadth of wrist sizes. An excellent watch, as long as you are willing to deal with an outdated movement.
Well done. 👏 As a GS owner, these SKX007/SKX009 are getting more wrist time than all my other more expensive Seiko's. SKX's are eternally living legend Seiko watches 🙌
The SKX... the legendary affordable dive rated watch for the average man that is versatile and holds its own against the most expensive watches. RIP you will be missed.
Thank you for the great video, bought a skx009j a few months ago and was less than impressed, but when you start wearing the skx it grows on you to the point that you don't want to wear anything else.. this cheap Japanese diver is more than the sum of its parts.
Sean, I really appreciate it, man. And you summed up the video better than I could "The watch being more than the sum of its parts" is what I was going for. Thank you for the comment, brother. Keep wearing your SKX in good health!
Excellent video, thank you for taking the time too make it. I`ve had Seiko watches for over 40yrs, currently have my SKX 009 in for a service, it gets used and abused, I surf with it, motorcycle with it,it copes a beating, excellent watch.
It is such a pleasure! I really wanted to hone in on what makes this watch so popular (and hope to have done it at least a bit of justice) but having an enthusiast tell me that I have done something right is all that's necessary in my books. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and keep wearing your pieces in good health, man!
I was never quite sure about the SKX design, but I bought one because they were cheap and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. It’s not hype there really is something very special about this watch (you describe it brilliantly).
So true. This is my first automatic. I have a Tag, Movado, Tissot, and Boluvas. They all retired (for now) since I purchased my SKX009 in August of this year. Perfect size and mine has been consistent gain of 2 minutes a week.
Wow, thank you for your review, very good. You'r enthusiastic and keen perception, without all the negatives that others love to dwell on, is refreshing and appreciated. Bruce, Queensland, Australia
The case and dial design of the skx is the main reason why it is so beloved and has stood the test of time. There will always be a spot in the rotation for the skx.
Good luck 😊 I had the 007 for a year, it came with a misaligned chapter ring at 6 o'clock, it was actually loose and moving a bit at the bottom of the dial. I opened it up and superglued it in place. The bezel was also not aligned perfectly at 12.. As a watch it was solid at +10 a day. So yeah.. good luck.
because amongst so many divers watches out there the SKX has its own style and concept.. i can't tell you exactly how or why but it just feels different to any other diver watch, yet still having that classic style. It copies no one, yet still a homage to the great divers watches of history. amazing watch!
One of my top three favorite watches for sure. Interesting to note, the case and dial design actually date back to the 7458 quartz divers made from the late 70s to mid 80s. I actually think the 007 is better proportioned than the 013. To me the 013 seemed crowded in comparison, like it was obviously a miniaturized version of the regular size 007.
Thank you for the trivia, man! Honestly, I am new to the Seiko space, but these write-ups teach me so much about watches (and then having enthusiast dropping knowledge helps me even more) There was mention of a SKX399 which also looks fascinating! Damnit, the sheer amount of references is hard enough to keep track of haha. Thanks again for the comment, brother!
I have a Rolex, Omega, Tudor and a bunch of Seikos, however when I am at home or doing anything involving water activities the SKX is always the first choice. It is a modern classic and as you said one of the most charming watches money can buy.
I expressed and interest in this watch 5 years ago while surfing the web for a watch to buy as my wife hovered over my shoulder. So on christmas day 2015 to my surprise my wife handed me a box which i opened slowly and behold an SKX pepsi emerged from its confinement. I have been wearing my 009k proudly since then regardless of the non hacking ability. This unfortunately started a watch addiction like mentioned in one the previous post. I try to put away a small amount of money every paycheck to save for the next watch. I want to buy my wife an skx013 so we can wear our watches together but she is not into watches like i am. Hopefully my next acquisition will be a Seiko LX diver with a spring drive movement. Love watching your channel, keep up the great work. With so many watch reviewers on youtube your still on my short list.
I'm a fan of the SKX series, just like what you said, they're very affordable, the only reason why I bought all three at the same time, SKX007, 009 and 011. I'm still thinking if I would be getting the SKX013. I'm still in the planning stage of getting replacement straps. The video would be a bit nicer if the SKX011 was included but still it was an excellent presentation of the history of the dive watches. More power.

I have thought about getting an skx for a long time, and this video on the design aesthetic was critical in my decision to buy one, so now I have one in the mail! Thanks so much!!!
Very well put together, the more you look at the crown position at 4, the more it looks right! Swapping and changing straps to suit occasions really works, my Overseas Chrono came with 3 and the quick release system and was a major selling point in purchasing it. No comments back on the quartz vid!!!
I’m a Seiko guy since the mid 80s, but I have never liked the aesthetics of the SKX. I appreciate your pointing out the design aspects in great detail. I was not aware of the smaller model, too. Your showing the vintage models also made me see where I might prefer to mod, which I do with other watches. Well done.
Fantastic video on a truly iconic watch. I had an 009 in my collection but have since I sold it. I am now kicking around the idea of getting another Seiko again. Keep these great videos coming. Thanks

I love this watch! But I like the the SKX399 better because it has chromed indices and I prefer it over the circular indices. Great video! Your content never fails to amaze!
Thank you so much, Mari! I am new to the Seiko space (and didn't know that the 399 existed - rookie error) And I also prefer squares to circles. Again, I really appreciate the support. It means so much having work appreciated. Thank you!
I didn't feel much for my SKX009 until I decided to fit a jubilee bracelet. Somehow this made it look really different....and special. Now I understood why this model is always called iconic.
Great video, been using seiko divers for well over twenty years and they have certainly been very well used and have never let me down, instead of servicing them I often just bought another one every couple of years, thanks again for a well informed and great video, lekker bly
Great, well researched, analytical content as always my friend. Never owned an SKX but love my Seiko ‘Arnie’ and my Mech 2 Army Air Core watch. Have you done a video on the PLOprof and more to the point it’s little brother the Baby PLOprof yet? I would love to see that.
Brilliant vid Kept the seiko divers since 1980, various models from the earlier 150mtr to the quartz to back to the auto models, can't go wrong with these .
A great video that captures so many of the reasons why people are in to watches. I have never had a Seiko but have just created my own Seiko mod which has been a brilliant experience.
You are really cranking out some good content. I have had two of these. One I bought a long time ago and sold it. The other one I have I bought rather cheap because it has scratches and a crappy nato band, but I use it for swimming and I like to know how much time I have been in the water so I don't get sunburned. It is a sturdy watch. I know of watch collectors who have many high-end watches have some variant of the sks models. A year ago you could get one for 169.00 USA dollars with a rubber strap, now its 220 dollars for the same one. This watch has a large following and as you said one of the most modded watches of all time.
Excellent video. You make a strong argument for the Seiko SKX which is hard too refute. You can spend more money on a watch costing hundreds of dollars more, but not necessarily receive more in terms of value or what the watch can do for you. The SKX is legendary in it's own right.
Your African accent is a true gift. Your excellent watch reviews are as addictive as the hobby itself. I sold my 007 because it seemed a little chunky after a while but I have felt drawn the 013... Just one more won't hurt
the 007 is really lightning in a bottle. The non-applied white on black indices give the watch a real utilitarian / military / SciFi look. It is just the kind of watch you would expect to see on a space marine in a dystopian future, especially on an olive nato zulu strap.
Surprising to see that the SKX still hasn't upgraded the movement. I used to wear this Seiko back in my university days and living off ramen noodles))) These days my two favorite watches in my collection are Doxa and Panerai. I asked my son if he wanted an SKX, he said he wasn't into antiques. I guess I can relate. Lots of other great low level brands on the market, especially in the world of microbrands.
@@jacc88888, he decided on the Pantor Nautilus. We found it for $199. Sapphire crystal, NH 35 movement which is accurate to 10 seconds a day. The case is similar to the Turtle. However, there definite styling cues to my Doxa Professional. I think the lad made a very wise buying decision)))
@@markfallon7694 I guess it's like if you were given the same money to choose between an old classic or one with all the bells and whistles....like a classic Mercedes vs. NEW ONES. If you like heritage go with SKX007 if not there's a huge market out there.
Wouldn't it be cool if they could bring out a new model with square indices? I think it would take the community by storm! Thanks for the comment, Austin.
Bravo! IDG. I love the look of the skx007. I'll have to hold off on the purchase because I just have so many watches right now. Once I thin the herd a bit you can bet there will be a new SKX modded with a double domed sapphire crystal in my watch box. Keep up the great work!
I am glad I purchased an Skx011 last year, the one I ordered was $209.00, they are $315.00 on the same site now! I feel lucky to have caught it at a good price, The orange dial always was kind of less sought after, but It was my compromise, since I wasn't able to get an orange monster when they were available. Orange is my favorite color, and I wanted the black dial one, but I am very glad to have the orange version instead.
I like how you analyze the aesthetics of watches. I ask if you noticed the small difference in placement of the crowns between modern and older generation Seiko’s. The 7002, which you mentioned in this video, has it exactly at 4:00 while the modern ones are at around 3:45. It’s such a minor thing, maybe that’s why I haven’t seen any video that mentions this. Do you have any thoughts on it?
bought the 007 about a year ago. Its an amazing watch. I changed the rubber strap out for a strapcode jubilee, and i also changed the bezel insert as i wanted a slight change to the look.
I enjoy your video very much. It's clean and simple and at the same time informative. I learnt a few things and thank you. In contrast, there are too many who tried too hard to impress, but, failed miserably. They wear a hat too big for their head and shoot themselves on their own foot. Somehow it does not occur to them that there are many people out there listening in who have played with watches long before they know what is a watch. Yes, watches are for fun. An everything watch- now, that's fresh. I like your style of talking. Keep it up. I have both the SKX 009 and 013. Your reasons are valid. IMO, the affordability is the main the reason. There are others just as iconic and just as playful. To me, they are just as collectable as the iconic vintage chronographs ( I have a dozen of this ). As for the divers, I also have the SLA017, Sumo, Samurai, Turtle, Baby Turtle, Stargate, 200m Tuna, 300M Tuna, Char Zaku (the latest Emperor), Transocean, Shogun, monster, Fathom, 62Mas recreation, 7002, 4205, 6309, Williard (merkur version) Sharkey Marine master, and the SBGA231 GS titanium. I buy all these to play with my children and my wife. Family Fun. Worth every penny of it.
I bought my Seiko Divers 7A10 quartz in 1983 and worn it every day including for skiing, diving and other outdoor sports. A few scratches but it keeps perfect time, the only time I set it is when the clocks change and it is within a few seconds. It needs a new battery every five years or so. Pity they have gone to automatic, quartz makes a lot more sense for a serious diving/sports watch.
Only recently have I begun appreciating the SKX. I preferred Submariner-esque dive watches, but after having two Seikos, I'm starting to want this one!
I wear my modded 29 yr old 7002 most days, with new hands orange dial black bezel , love it , on the rattle machine jubilee bracelet cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
I modded my SKX007 with domed-domed AR sapphire, deep-sea bezel, ceramic bezel insert, Strap Code endmill bracelet and a regulated NH36 movement. It's been on many adventures with me, in and out of the water, and love it just as much as my Seamaster Master Co-Axial.
I pretty much did the exact same with mine, Love the watch! cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1111/1080/products/Screen_Shot_2019-05-27_at_1.45.53_PM.png?v=1560845506
"It won't be going anywhere soon" - How true! Even after Seiko discontinued production, other manufacturers worldwide have taken over the platform. There's still a huge market this design. Even with an SKX013, an SKX015 and a NamokiMod SKX007 Titanium in my collection, there's another SKX mod / custom build on the way. Yes, it's a very sick hobby.
The first slim case was the Seiko 7548 since 1978. The first snowflake dial was the 6309 7290 probably since 1982. The Seiko 7002 is much younger since 1988.
It’s a true iconic workhorse. Think.... the Model T of cars. Simple, reliable and cheap. Sorry.... THINK .... Honda Civic... 5-speed Hatchback. Thanks for the video. It was perfect.

"At the end of the day, watches are about fun."
Well......
My SKX has served me well; I get the glance and head nod...a lot of charm / history / charisma / and legacy for a good price.
I didn't feel much for my SKX009 until I decided to fit a jubilee bracelet. Somehow this made it look really different....and special. Now I understood why this model is always called iconic.
My first watch purchase in 1982, had it repaired twice it now rests in my collection.
Probably the greatest watch of all time, and coming from an entry background. The SKX is like a Snob killer.
the best was affordable and strikingly beautiful iconic.
@@seikoskx Yep, the SKX is in my collection
Great video, been using seiko divers for well over twenty years and they have certainly been very well used and have never let me down, instead of servicing them I often just bought another one every couple of years, thanks again for a well informed and great video, lekker bly
Absolutely the most brilliant commentary I have heard in awhile ! Excellent
A top quality piece of work well researched and considered and pretty well presented, thank you.
Great review! The SkX 007 is a true iconic watch.
Brilliant vid
Kept the seiko divers since 1980, various models from the earlier 150mtr to the quartz to back to the auto models, can't go wrong with these .
A great video that captures so many of the reasons why people are in to watches. I have never had a Seiko but have just created my own Seiko mod which has been a brilliant experience.
It is one of the 3 most iconic watches in the World , next to the Rolex Submariner and the Casio DW5600E G-Shock .
armando cardenas you nailed it the Sub,SKX,and the 5600E which is refered to as the digital version of the Rolex Sub.
@@johnadams3107 Exactly , sir . The three pillars of modern horology .
Oh man, the times the SKX could be called affordable. Just payed 400,- for a used 013.
that's a great price 👍
Your African accent is a true gift. Your excellent watch reviews are as addictive as the hobby itself. I sold my 007 because it seemed a little chunky after a while but I have felt drawn the 013... Just one more won't hurt
the 007 is really lightning in a bottle. The non-applied white on black indices give the watch a real utilitarian / military / SciFi look. It is just the kind of watch you would expect to see on a space marine in a dystopian future, especially on an olive nato zulu strap.
Smashing! Well done sir.
A very familar accent for me.
A SKX007 will hopefully be in my very near future. Just, £270 though.
Haha! That’s so funny (your son’s response) brilliant
Eric Fenris yeah, seems like a classier watch than the SKX. The movement is better too. Hope he is enjoying it
@@markfallon7694 I guess it's like if you were given the same money to choose between an old classic or one with all the bells and whistles....like a classic Mercedes vs. NEW ONES. If you like heritage go with SKX007 if not there's a huge market out there.
Nice work 💯 just been wearing mine for the last 5 Days,
Cheers from Perth Australia 🙏
Thank you Gary! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it!
And the Seiko luminous feature is spectacular in the dark.
I miss the rectangular indices-and 💯 agree this watch would be preferable w/out the day/date complication.
Well done mate. Quite a power presentation. I'm impressed.
I enjoy the 013 myself and wear it on an MN strap.
After watching this video I love my SKX007J even more.
bought and skx173 recently, is my dayli watch :)
My first automatic was the SKX173. Great everyday watch that planted the seed.
I do not like every seiko model
.But this model is so classic, affordable and the most important is it will never go out of style 👍👍👍
Nice....
just got my first skx love it got the skx175 with jubilee bracelet a beautiful piece.
My SKX009 arrived yesterday :) beautiful watch
Watched this with my skx on my wrist.
Great vid.
I wear my modded 29 yr old 7002 most days, with new hands orange dial black bezel , love it , on the rattle machine jubilee bracelet cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Pepsi Bezel , black chapter ring it should have said ,,,,,
I wear my 009j on the stock rubber strap and it’s 🔥
I have become a slave to rubber lately and can totally relate! Thank you for the comment, Taylor, I really appreciate it.
I just got mine. Made in Japan. Changed to a jubilee bracellet. Love it so far.
A breakdown worthy of the SKX
I have several watches but I wear my SKX 007 on a daily basis It absolutely fantastic , bombproof and smart.
Thank you for such a thoroughly enjoyable and well researched video. The SKX is truly an amazing watch :)

Well done
My first automatic watch, which eventually led to seven others...love this watch
bought seiko skx009k 2days ago....very nice watch. my first automatic
It’s a true iconic workhorse. Think.... the Model T of cars. Simple, reliable and cheap. Sorry.... THINK .... Honda Civic... 5-speed Hatchback. Thanks for the video. It was perfect.
Great review on a real work horse from Seiko! I don't have any SKX series in my collection, however I do own other Seiko Prospex Models and will probably buy this watch in the 42mm because of my larger wrist size....
I would like for you to consider the Air/Diver Prospex Solar Chronographs SSC series!
