Bought skx007 after your comments and have to say it has become my go to daily, it does exactly what it says on the tin, I'm a motor mechanic by trade and this is a tough usable piece of equipment. Thanks for the great advice.
Just pulled the trigger on the SKX007! Last one at my local watch shop. Found it in a hidden corner right next to the 5 series for a great price. Couldn't be happier!
Great video. The SKX was released two years after I joined the Navy, was my first mechanical watch, and still in my rotation. It’s been with me all over the world in my 24 year Military career. I “upgraded” to a Seiko SRP777, but I just don’t love it the way I love my SKX. I’ve been through a million straps and bracelets with this watch and I’ve had it on a Seiko jubilee for the past year or so. Gotta own the “jangle”.
So sir.. as a naval personnel you dont have any problem with the skx w/ no hacking/winding feature. Thers something feels while wearing this iconic watch for me
I come back and watch this video every now and then to remind myself how smart I am for buying an SKX007. This time I noticed that I could round up the comments up to 800. You’re welcome. 😂. Love the channel. Keep it up, man.
Overrated? Probably not for a 20 year old watch but clearly brands like Orient have surpassed it's features. You cant argue with it's iconic status though.
Tree Dillinger if it was it would have a cheap cyclops copy, a 3 o’clock crown and the same indexes, the same hands, same case, I could go on......it’s not a Steinhart. I do feel that a lot divers look similar to the untrained eye tho👍🏻
vinny8vinny ok, it’s not an exact copy, but come on. The dial, the bezel, the bracelet. They didn’t design it out of thin air. If anything they very specifically changed a couple of features so that they can call it their own. It’s not just the divers, look at all their watches. Look at vintage Seikos from the 70s. 90% of them are fake Datejusts. You can’t tell me it’s not a blatant rip-off. Oyster bracelets, jubilee bracelets, rotating bezels, fluted bezel, screw down crown. That’s really all Seiko does with their entry level automatic watches: copy Rolex for a much cheaper price. They don’t even pretend they’re not doing it, come on. Everyone does know that, right? I mean- the sky is blue...right?? That should be the starting point of any discussion like this one. It’s simply a discussion of how different Rolex ripoffs at different price points compare. Nothing more, nothing less.
1bentley4ever ...try reading closer, Champ, I specifically addressed that. They’re not going for 1:1 copy (minus the branding) like Steinhart. We can say “inspired by” or whatever, but be serious. Let’s use common sense here for a second, Sport. How do you think they designed the SKX? I have both the Sub and the SKX, for the record. I have 2 versions of the Seiko I use as beaters. I recommend them for that; but iconic? Bullshit.
Tree Dillinger you make some good points, especially with the oyster bracelet. I mean even the name “007”. It is a very different watch tho. Inspired by....yes, every diver must be inspired by the fifty fathoms and the sub I guess. Let’s be real tho even Rolex didn’t start making good bracelets till the last decade 😂
My SKX007 is still running well after 15 years. I paid $105 for it and never looked back. I thought about upgrading the movement and doing cosmetic stuff but decided not to worry about it.
It's hard to call a watch overrated when so many people gladly shell out $200 for one! It's iconic & legendary in it's own right and that gives it certain status, regardless of lack of features in it's price range. The Orient Ray II was recently selling for $50 less than the SKX and feature-wise on paper, is undeniably a better value. In a way, they are like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, clearly not the best motorcycle for the money, but man, it's a "Harley!"..like, it's a "Seiko SKX!"

Love, love, love my SKX 009...but I must add that I did in fact unknowingly crack the crystal, No idea when or how it happened. Did have to replace it. Only crystal I've ever replaced. Still my favorite beater of all.
The more parts inside the movement, the more parts that can fail. I bought my SKX on the fact it meets ISO and will outlast all my other watches in the decades to come and will not require the added cost of factory service.
Just bought one, first was misaligned. So returned it and bought in a different place. Guess what,,,misaligned as well. Not as bad as first one so I may keep it
007 gang I love my skx it was my first automatic movement I was into watches since I was young, when I turned 18 I got myself a seiko skx it has been 4 years since I’ve bought it; I have gone scuba diving in it, used it and abused it, this watch has been dropped smacked and all sorts of things and it still runs great. This was the best purchase for a watch I have made so far.
I love my Seiko watches, the SKX007 is a work horse . I have a 15 year old watch that I have beat up pretty well, the hardlex took a beating . Several times I hit it so hard on steel objects that I was sure that the crystal was broken, but it survived and has the marks to prove it. I was glad I found this channel when it had 5 thousand subscribers , The word is out this is a great channel to learn about our sickness.
Always like your videos I just got a skx007 and love it. It’s a great looking watch and has been keeping excellent time. I ordered mine from Long Island watch and while I paid a bit more received a clean fresh an new model. Definitely not sitting on a shelf long.
The SKX007 was the first watch I bought after getting in to watches. I love the watch and don't plan to ever get rid of it. To me if the SKX had manual wind and hacking it would be the perfect watch. But I still love it as it is.
Thank you for your channel. Informative and carefully considered. Have an SKX as well as watches from Nomos and Laco but the Seiko is the one I miss when I don't wear it....
i have worn mine daily for months, and the lack of hand wind doesn’t bother me as i never really take it off unless showering. I guess the lack of hacking is a small letdown but doesn’t become a factor until setting (which is only about once a month). Overall, amazing watch, great size and weight and the design is stunning
Agreed Jory, I have the 009 on a nice Nato, and I switch it out with a Strapcode Oyster or whatever we're calling it now...keep up the good work my friend !
I've lost the count for how many vids about seiko SKX I've already seen, and here is the first one to address the REALLY important matters about it. Thank you! Interesting enough, the mineral glass has a Mohs Scale of Hardness around 5, although the Seiko hardlex is 8, it's tougher than tungsten or hardened steel! Good enough for me!
Just bought my first SKX007 and I'm super happy with it. The guy sold it to me with A Turtle bracelet though which didn't fit so I've treated it to a Geckota Engineer style. Oh and my chapter ring is perfect! One thing I would like though is a Kinetic movement in there, or a solar. But Kinetic would be better as you still get that feel of the weight inside moving.
Another great vid Jory - ironic that you made this now...picked up a 009 last week. Incredible value for money IMO. Agree re straps...rubber fine, though bracelet or NATO also work well. An all-around great classic timepiece.
The fact that it does not have hand winding means that as an occasionally worn watch, you have to have a watch winder, or you gotta shake, shake, shake before it gets going again. I mean, how much more does it cost to include that feature in? Even my lowly Seagull movement has that feature.
I dont really understand the obession with hacking, handwinding, and sapphire crystals. Also, none of my Seikos have misaligned chapter rings, so thats a nonstarter for me as well. The SKX is a great watch, and is ISO 6425 rated. The Orient is not. Nuff said.
Being able to hack makes it easier to tell if your watch is still accurate and might need some servicing. Handwinding is a lot more efficient and easier than shaking. That said it doesn't bother me if my skx has none of these features since I've got other watches in rotation. The hacking also helps me when I regulate my watch since I don't have timegrapher.
Let me ask you a question I have the watch some of them say 21 jewels and some of them just say 200m do they both have 21 jewels to make the automatic run
Yes, they both have 21 jewel movements. The model that states 21 jewels on the dial is the made in Japan variant, while the one without it (and being worn by Jory) is made in Malaysia. They share all the same parts.
I got my SKX 007 about a month ago, and it regularly loses about 3 or 4 seconds per day. Everything else is perfect ... chapter alignment, etc ... What should I do?
Sorry but i have another question. Do you have a video on bow to properly maintain a watch because i am heraing all this stuff about adjustment and regulating.
I have always been wondering why people need a diver mechanical watch if they are not diving? And if they are diving, why don't they take a good quality G-Shock like Frogman which is specialised in diving? I know it is fashion and appearance. I know it is about personal preference but I can't stop thinking about practicality of diving watches.
I purchased the SKX007 about 2 years ago and really like it. However, I've had to exchange it 3 times for the following reason: Although the 007 is an automatic watch, it seems to stop running after 3 days of continuous wearing. Each of the exchanges seem to have the same problem. To use the watch, I must place it on a watch winder every 3 days. I'm fairly active and don't know why this problem exist. Is there a "break-in" period for this watch? Each of the exchanges were from a different dealer. Is this a characteristic of the 007 or is there a flaw in the movement?
My goodness... what must I do to move enough??? I live a normal life and move as normal as anyone. Your Seiko 5 might be a bit different than my 007 although they both have the same movement. Strange...very strange.
I'm a subscriber and i like your content Jory. I just ordered my first watch ! An SKX007 with Strapcode bracelet and DD sapphire from Long Island Watches. I even paid extra for overnight shipping. I'm Hoping i made the right choice for my first REAL watch. I feel that if you want to avoid SEIKO'S quality control problems don't buy directly from SEIKO or a name brand store. Go thru a reputable middle man company.
Hardlex is great, I accidentally smashed my PADI diver into a marble clock. The marble crumbled while the hardlex was unmarked. I don't recommend putting it to the test though. :D
An icon, Seiko is right to not change a thing about it. Also as to the bracelet, my friend has a 90's Rolex GMT M2 and guess what, the bracelet has hollow end links, centre links and a stamped clasp just like the SKX does.
What’s your opinion on the Seiko Prospex Padi Dive watch? I’m trying to decide on an Skx or this particular watch. Both designs are gorgeous, (love the homage of the submariner on the prospex) but which one should i get as a first real entree watch for myself?
Dumb question but when do you actually use a dive watch? I understand it works under water buy so do many other water resistant watches? Also can you actually wear it with those straps?
I love my SKX divers. And my Orients. And my Vostoks. Wish I could afford an Omega or a Rolex. But my inexpensive watches haven’t let me down yet. Did I mention I LOVE my Vostoks? :-D
Excellent watches and doesn't break the budget while wearing a different watch when you like. Sometimes spreading your money across different watches make for a happy owner and a more diverse collection. Smart move!
I think that there has been three versions of movement, not sure about what but as far as I can remember there are 7s26 A, B, and C, and it's something about the hairspring or the mainspring. So not completely without any improvements for 22yrs.
Love the channel. Love the skx. Congrats on a great first year. Any opinion on the lesser known skx cousin the 173? Never seems to be mentioned when discussing the rest of its family.
I am completely new in the watch world, a novice.. I'd like to make this watch my first in hopefully what will be a nice collection, is it good pick to have as a 1st watch?
what width nato strap can i put on this seiko please??? i just found out that i had this seiko watch hidden in my knick knack box but the original rubber piece of crap band just disintegrated!! i love that green nato strap.
Don't get me wrong , I love the skx design . I really do . But hacking and handwinding atleast my dude. I don't mind the mineral crystal or hardlex . I think it's an iconic watch , but the nh36 movements are going for 19 bucks in the UK. So Seiko is probs selling those movments for a dime, and that movment has hacking and handwinding . So, why haven't they put the 4r36 movment yet.
Because it doesn't need them, hacking?if you want to the second accuracy why the fuck are you wearing a mechanical?get a quartz Hand winding, literally don't give a shit about it,and it means extra wear on the crown Also the 7s26 is specified to be more accurate than the 4r36
Hello Mr. Time Teller. I have both SKX007 and 7002-7001, I switch to both every week do you also rotate wearing watches? I am planning to Modify them in terms of crystal, bezel and straps
Would really enjoy seeing your opinion of the DeepBlue Master 1000 at $149 & resolving many of your skx cons with a hacking and handwinding seiko movement as well as sapphire crystal & helium escape, pretty great alternative imho
Loved your take on the SKX. Flawed? Certainly. I got mine for $135; it's taught me lots and has accompanied me (and still does) through thick and thin. It's part of the experience of how much one can pay and still have fun.. SRPs have updates and are so much fun, but also cost twice as much.
definitely not overrated. recently got one for about 160usd. changed the strap to a zulu, got a sapphire crystal, and ceramic bezel. yes the 7s26 is outdated but it still gets the job done. before i was torn on what to get (citizen, orient or this skx) but im very happy with my skx. the fun part is the modding. the lume is also fucking awesome.
Enjoying the videos. Just so you know the big dead cat on your mic is only for when you are outside in a super windy environment. You can take it off for your videos cause it looks funky.
You need to learn about COSC a bit more. I hate that COSC-spec 'argument'. It's way more than the mean daily rate. I have an SKX007, it's great, it's a genuine ISO Dive watch, which low end Orient Makos and Rays aren't (my M-FORCE is). But I don't pretend it's COSC-spec.
I doubt most dive watches ever end up in the water so the ISO thing probably isn't that important to most people. I'm not a diver so don't really care about that. If I can go swimming with then that's enough for me.
Dear watch enthusiasts, I'm planning to buy my first watch. I have a small wrist, and looking for a watch around seiko skx' price range. What other watch would you recommend over seiko's skx013? Thanks
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And on that subject my first Seiko Divers watch is still going strong after 40 years. Why do people have to try and find fault with everything? Especially considering the price, these watches are EPIC.
It's funny you made this video because I sold mine a few days ago and don't feel bad though. While it looks good and is a strap beast, it wasn't in my regular rotation. It didn't bother me about the hacking or winding, and I'd recommend it to anyone, but it was never a big hit with me. I never ... bonded with it. But I know they guy who owns it now will show it the love it deserves.
Great video. Also, the SKX is an equalizer. At a place I worked at the manager wore an Omega Seamaster on a perlon and I wore my SKX proudly on a black leather strap. The SKX is the bad boy in the room that is shamed by no one. They are, however, not as robust as many think. The 7s26 movement in mine recently got messed up and so I am planning in the near future on retrofitting it with an NH36 movement. that's another reason why this piece has a cult following; they can be modified in so many different ways. An SKX has a soul. Take the guts out of it, take it apart and put it back together, modify it but it still is what it is.
I bought one of these because of you. I have some nicer, more expensive watches, but this may still be my favorite. It has to have the greatest value to price ratio of any watch made. I love it. Thanks.
Hacking? Never had need of it. Hand wind? Sure but a couple of quick shakes and the SKX is away. End links? This is a critique of the watch, not the bracelet. Misaligned chapter ring? Never had a problem. However, the crystal is a fingerprint magnet and the crown doesn’t always thread easily. Apart from that, for the price, fantastic piece, I have three.
KRaikkonenSF Did you read this somewhere or is it simply your Opinion? All the SKX owners I know are enthusiasts and in general ( only my opinion) , most enthusiasts know what amplitude is. But for the sake of your argument, let’s assume you are correct, I’m not sure how not being aware what amplitude is detracts from the SKXs great charm, character and value.
The watch is technically obsolete. And it is true that a large majority of watch owners don't know that never handwinding a movement causes a reduction of maximal amplitude with time, with a negative impact on precision (COSC models running at -30 per day after 10+ years...) What I mean is this: many watches which are obsolete, or sub-par technologically, still have a history or general feeling that makes them very relevant. I was offered a 1967 Rolex GMT which had been to Vietnam for several tours....obsolete ? Damn right. But still very relevant in a collection. I'll even say Russian watches are relevant also, yet their movements are....you know..... But regarding the SKX, what we tend to hear from owners is that the watch is NOT obsolete because (choose from the following: it can be regulated to be "COSC compliant", sapphire is useless because "I don't bang my watch", handwinding/hacking is pointless because "I personally don't use it"....) So in essence a lame attempt at arguing the SKX is technocally on par with the Swiss, rather than accepting it's not and that it is what comes along with the watch rather than the watch itself which makes it relevant. But as a watch the SKX, along with the Seiko 5 for that matter, is a very cheap one.
Hello from beautiful Thailand. Could you please explain the difference between, say a Seiko SKX007 or 009 Clone and a Seiko SKX007 or 009 Counterfeit. All very confusing. Could it possibly be that one is produced in Japan and the other produced in Malaysia ? Jan Davey. JANBOY. RN. Rtd.
7s26 might not have hand wind or hacking but do you really need it?Personally I've never really missed these features. The movement is tough and manages to put up with abuse, I'll take simplicity over complexity if it means it's less likely to break lol
They haven't updated the Taj Mahal in 370 years. What's yer point?
And the Taj Mahal still doesn't have hacking or hand winding.
JungleEddie it doesn’t have sapphire crystal either

@@paulusvberkel1448 me three!
2 years how is it?
Why update if it works? Better than these constant tweaks by watchmakers just to suck in more cash.
Always like your videos
I just got a skx007 and love it. It’s a great looking watch and has been keeping excellent time.
I ordered mine from Long Island watch and while I paid a bit more received a clean fresh an new model.
Definitely not sitting on a shelf long.
I'm a Seiko fanboy.
If you want a modded SKX007 brand new , double check the LongIsland dude, sapphire dome and upgraded bracelet. SKX007 is awesome :)
i have worn mine daily for months, and the lack of hand wind doesn’t bother me as i never really take it off unless showering. I guess the lack of hacking is a small letdown but doesn’t become a factor until setting (which is only about once a month). Overall, amazing watch, great size and weight and the design is stunning
Watching this while wearing an SKX lol
Nothing wrong with that!
me too :)
Me too! lol
I just switched to my snzh57 about an hour ago, my skx was on my wrist for a week non stop (except for showers)
"watch"ing ... heh
Agreed Jory, I have the 009 on a nice Nato, and I switch it out with a Strapcode Oyster or whatever we're calling it now...keep up the good work my friend !
Long Island Watch sells their own copy of the SKX with a flat sapphire crystal for under $300.
The key word there is "copy...not "original"
I've lost the count for how many vids about seiko SKX I've already seen, and here is the first one to address the REALLY important matters about it. Thank you! Interesting enough, the mineral glass has a Mohs Scale of Hardness around 5, although the Seiko hardlex is 8, it's tougher than tungsten or hardened steel! Good enough for me!
The SKX is a legend Jory, thanks for the acurate and honest review & congratulations on reaching 37k subscribers!
Bought a Heimdallr for $160. They solved all of these problems.
Someone please enlighten me: what's the point of hacking if the watch will be off by 5 seconds in one day?
Hacking is used to sync a watch to another time source- hence many military applications.
If you aren't in the military it has absolutely zero practical application whatsoever
none. hahaha. And no winding, if you don't wear it you don't wind it. Greetings from Holland.
I mean, if you wear it, you don't have to wind it.
Chapter Ring on my SKX009 is slightly out. Got used to it but still shite they can't align them all as other manufacturers do....😥😥
I dont really understand the obession with hacking, handwinding, and sapphire crystals.
I have the 7002 series, I love the patina though and currently owned that one and I love it so much with switching nato straps.
Ron Drysdale
Be glad you got s good one.
Came across this three year old video. Oh to be able to find an SKX for under 200 in 2021.
Go with an Islander. 👍
The most amusing watch channel out there. Love your Seiko stress moments in the middle.
Subscribed over 6 mo ago - keep up the great work sir!
Umm, it really seems like you just didn't move the watch enough? I know my Seiko 5 worked all year as long as I wore it enough.
I ve had the skx for years in my watch collection.
It s price has gone up quite a bit now.
I love this watch. Its definetely a keeper.
Hardlex is great, I accidentally smashed my PADI diver into a marble clock. The marble crumbled while the hardlex was unmarked. I don't recommend putting it to the test though. :D
The Skx007 is the best watch in the game - greetings from germany!
Good review i have a SKX and my wacth really keeps good time and it looks cool!
An icon, Seiko is right to not change a thing about it. Also as to the bracelet, my friend has a 90's Rolex GMT M2 and guess what, the bracelet has hollow end links, centre links and a stamped clasp just like the SKX does.
That only means that both, Seiko and Rolex know how to F**k their customers :(. Also, alot has been changed since the 90's.
What’s your opinion on the Seiko Prospex Padi Dive watch? I’m trying to decide on an Skx or this particular watch. Both designs are gorgeous, (love the homage of the submariner on the prospex) but which one should i get as a first real entree watch for myself?
Also, the crown threading is kind of crude and feels pretty bad. It always took me several tries to get the crown to screw down onto the threads.
22mm
Hhmmm I see the Oris box in the back. Subbed just for that! 👏
Because it doesn't need them, hacking?if you want to the second accuracy why the fuck are you wearing a mechanical?get a quartz
Hand winding, literally don't give a shit about it,and it means extra wear on the crown
Also the 7s26 is specified to be more accurate than the 4r36
You just made me so happy about the crystal ! I though its just a mineral one, prone to scratching. :) Yeah, im totally getting an SKX :)
consider a mako 2 instead, way better and cheaper
Happy one year brutha!!!
My SKX is sitting next to my Explorer in my watchbox. If I need a tough watch for a rough job I reach for the SKX. Just putting that out there
Dear watch enthusiasts,
I'm planning to buy my first watch.
Dude great chan, greetings from Bulgaria!
Great year! Keep it coming
So how does a standard mineral glass fares? Is it below hardlex?
Yes, it is below hardlex.
@@thetimeteller Including the Mohs hardness for mineral crystal (5) would highlighted the benefits of Hardlex (8).
I'm struggling as to what I should buy my son as a first watch. skx007 or a G-shock.
Hey guys, quick question: if I mention TTT on urban gentry, will the admins freak out?
It's funny you made this video because I sold mine a few days ago and don't feel bad though. While it looks good and is a strap beast, it wasn't in my regular rotation. It didn't bother me about the hacking or winding, and I'd recommend it to anyone, but it was never a big hit with me. I never ... bonded with it. But I know they guy who owns it now will show it the love it deserves.
Where is the cheapest place to buy one?
What watch in the price range of Seiko SKX has sapphire crystals??
I love it. Thanks.
Awesome videos👍. Just placed my order for skx007😁.
Where did you get the olive green strap?
Chris Searle sell me one & you still got 2 for both of your hand 😜
No handwinding = amplitude problems you won't be able to solve in the long term.
But hey, most SKX owners don't even know what amplitude is...
And it is true that a large majority of watch owners don't know that never handwinding a movement causes a reduction of maximal amplitude with time, with a negative impact on precision (COSC models running at -30 per day after 10+ years...)
What I mean is this: many watches which are obsolete, or sub-par technologically, still have a history or general feeling that makes them very relevant.
Sapphire has top scratch resistance but Seiko chooses Hardlex because it has top shatter resistance.
