I wasn't sure if I would like the tuna enough to spend a grand on one, so I bought a Steeldive homage for $120, and I absolutely love the thing. My only objection is that it is an automatic not a quartz. I normally prefer automatics, but I just think the tuna ought to be a quartz watch. My misgivings about size and wearability have been put to rest, and I'm seriously considering buying a real one now.
At the time of this writing I've had the Tuna for 4 years. It stays on my wrist. Period. If you don't have 30k to spend on a Rolex, save yourself 29k and buy this watch.
Seiko Arnie SNJ025P1 was what got me into this TUNA craze... I modded it with a good SGD 100 to go to a polished bezel from the factory black ceramic, got it onto a nice straight end bracelet.. and sold it for a ZELOS.... and the decision I regretted for a whole year and a half until had to pull a trigger on SBBN045 with a factory bracelet that I got for a bargain price of USD 850 for a perfect condition 5 month old watch. And thats my secret for the tuna... it has not left my wrist and my next favourites of the line - RADO DIASTAR ORIGINAL 60th anniversary on green dial, the Ball Engineer III on beautiful enamel Turquoise 100 piece limited edition and even my G-SHOCK MTG-B3000 silver been sitting in their boxes ever since....
My brother is a watch collecter and gifted me a ninja tuna. Im not as much of a watch collector myself, but from the moment I put it on my wrist I have loved it. Im pretty sure this will be the last watch Ill own for as long as it keeps telling the time.
Once drove all day to buy a used SBBN007 for a trip to Maui in 2011. Accurate within a second per month. Loved it, but later sold it towards a Beretta semi-auto. Relied on my old SKX for awhile until buying a Citizen Pro 300m. Found that Ecozilla to be top heavy and nearly unwearable with sleeves, so I relied on my SKX again. The Tuna bug bit again, so last week I bought a Solar Golden Tuna SNE498. Plastic bezel and misalignment is driving my OCD crazy. (selling it) Last night I said damn it all, and bought an SBBN033. If ever I get the temporary urge to sell the 033, I’ll refer back to these ‘Holy Grail’ videos that brought me full circle. When it arrives from Seiya, it’d better be perfect. I’m good with this movement in this watch, and don’t mind the Hardlex, but can’t accept the terrible QC/QA from Seiko lately. They will be losing customers if they don’t just take a glance at the alignment before boxing them up. I know the high volume of units precludes Seiko from scrutinizing each piece, but a thousand dollar ambassador deserves a few seconds of Seikos QC time. BTW, not slamming Seiya. Not his fault. Odd how his disclaimer says that the watch isn’t aligned. If I’m unhappy, I’ll have to send it back to $eiko at my expense. Unacceptable. I’ve purchase a dozen Seikos in my 53y, but if this isn’t aligned, I’ve sworn off any more. Cheers McMahon

Interesting. I had the GSAR in the basket and at the last minute pulled the plug for a near mint pre-owned 017 a few days ago, and have not looked back. I will go for the automatic Marathon someday, but for tool watches, this Tuna scratched the itch. Enjoy!
I had the SBBN015 and sold it,huge mistake. I wore mine in the Mojave desert while attached to the USMC and not a mark on it. I must say I have never had a problem with my hardalex in all my seikos . Now awaiting on my SBBN033 which is in transit.
Back in November, being a fan of the original, I purchased the newly reissued "Arnie" (SNJ025). Though the watch is a part of the Tuna family...it deserved a some need love for it to proudly stand with its more famous family members, for which I gave it in the form of a new brushed steel shroud, and a Strapcode Hexad bracelet. I'll argue with anyone saying otherwise, as I feel I've got the best of multiple worlds: a serious, solar-driven, tool watch diver that can stand proudly with the other Tunas. And yes, I do use mine at least 3 days of the week....
Man oh man. I have looked at this watch for years, I didn't want to buy it because the usual reasons, no sapphire crystal, quartz, etc. but I find it beautiful and I could never stop thinking about it. I'll tell you, I sold some watches to buy a Swiss watch, and guess what i did? I just ordered the 033 Tuna. I have your videos to blame for it lol
Spot on! I ended up finding out this secret by myself but not realizing it until you spell it out... I was NOT wearing her 3 times per week. So sold her and now I am struggling to refrain myself to look back at her ...
I own a Ulysse Nardin marine. An Oris Aquis titanium. Oris Aquis clipperton. Rado Captain Cook and Gshock steel for good measure. I can solemnly tell you that this piece is special and exceptional. It is the Japanese deep sea dweller without doubt. Just buy it and enjoy it. It's beautiful.
I have had my sbbn015 for a while now and it is still my favorite watch to wear when I am not at work. As for the whole quartz thing mine gained 1.5 seconds from july first up until the recent time change. That kind of accuracy trumps the fact that it's not an automatic. It's the most accurate watch I have ever owned.
New to the Tuna, got my first yesterday and uh, it's the strap for me that torments ... don't want to lose it so got the nato going, but finding thicker seatbelt types don't thread easily and who needs this thing to sit higher right? So, either use thinner lug pins for the natos or stick with OEM pins and a two piece strap. I'm guessing pins don't fail that often or they wouldn't sell it with the silicone but I like the idea of that extra layer of tethering via the nato and zulu options.
Awesome advice. This is actually something i practice with all of my watches. The only downside i find is that this turns into having a collection of pieces that your really do actually “LOVE”, thus making it very hard to sell anything when you want to make room of others, 1st world problems lol.
Jeffrey McMahon now thats a hard choice, Black or Blue. I cant help you there as i would probably get both and then sell the one that i gravitate to the least, in a perfect world of course.
The no automatic movement isn’t a con. It was built for divers, they had previously complained that an automatic movement wasn’t keeping correct time while submerged at depths up to 600 ft. I really don’t know why people want to see a sweeping hand on this watch, it’s not going to happen. Get a spring drive tuna if you want a smooth sweeping hand. That simple.
Former Tuna owner here. I've owned both a Ninja SBBN035 and a brushed shroud 031. Neither of them got the wrist time as directed in this video (three days a week) and therefore they just didn't form a bond with me as expected. I like the IDEA of the Tuna more than I like the watch itself. It's a watch enthusiast's watch: dedicated diving performance, no-nonsense dial and hands, incredible lume, purpose-built quartz movement with HAQ levels of accuracy, and something you never see on the wrist of someone in the general public. The only people who buy these things outside of a few professional divers in Japan are watch nerds. It's fun to brag on a forum discussion that you too have a Tuna. But when I've owned one, I would almost always skip over it to wear something else when I made my decision about which watch to wear for the day. So a $1000 quartz watch just sits there in the watch box. And sits there. And sits there. Why do I keep it when it doesn't get worn that often? The answer of course, is to sell it. And that is what I've done and as painful as it is to look at threads on watch forums and RUclips videos about the attributes of the Tuna, I had to be honest with myself and just let it go. Tough love is a part of the suffering we watch obsessives sometimes have to practice.
I'd get an excellent condition Gillette Super Speed red or flare tip or a new Merkur 38HD barber pole and use Feather blades and any shave cream you like.
I own a Tuna. I love it. The Seiko super quartz movement is a masterpiece of accuracy. Not to mention the five years life of the battery! No other quartz can achieve this. Breitling produces a great quartz, but it's far more expensive, and the battery doesn't last for so long. Moreover, the Tuna has a unique look and aesthetic. You can like it or not but, as you said, it demands attention. In its price range among diver watches, I don't see so many timepieces with the same cool, unique , and overall technical appeal. Just my opinion tough. And I totally agree on your secret about the Tuna... take care!
