How To Fit An Epdm Roofing Rubber Membrane

- Hands down, one of the easiest DIY tasks on the project so far. With a simple flat roof like this nothing comes simpler to fit than EPDM. As with everything, detail is key, so flashings and trims need extra care as that is where potential problems can occur. There will be more detail on those bits in the next roofing addition.

Top tip for this - Go to your local Carpet Right or similar and ask if you can take one of those large cardboard rolls from their waste bin. Makes rolling out much easier!
Nice vid, helped me a lot. One thing I would suggest to anyone doing their own would be at the brooming / flattening stage just dampen the broom slightly, this helps it sheen the upper surface of the rubber and makes bubbles much easier to see ! Also helps the broom to glide. Hope this helps
Pro Tip if you pull it halfway over itself, glue the entire half of the deck from edge to middle, then fluff some air underneath the top EPDM section and give it a little shove at the same time you can literally roll the half in in under 5 seconds. Rinse and repeat. A heavy gardeners lawn roller will help you also or a 6'' neoprene or steel roller. Also where the roof transitions into the wall you should use Russ strip or you should mechanically terminate at the transition then cover tape in order to prevent thermal bridging in that area. If you come back in 5 years you will see what I am talking about. One more thing, termination bar to attach to the wall at the top. Love the single piece keep the videos coming.
Another great video...used to really enjoy the camper van vids but now enjoying these as my self build gets closer...
I'd like to thank you for this video! I did my flat roof about the same time, and watched all of your videos on the subject before starting. Our roofs differ in that mine is a shallow tub with parapets that has copper scuppers thru the wall, and will have a deck supported by Bison Levelers when I can afford it 😉 -- flat roofs are pretty daunting to the newbie, but now that I've done it I would have no problem doing another!
Absolutely loving your videos!! I have a flat concrete roof on an extension at home.. It gives no bother, and doesn't leak or anything, but I had been seriously considering this very job, just to tidy it up and make it look more modern looking.. This video has been a real insight!!! Thanks for all your posts 👍👍
Thanks so much Tim for this, I’m just about to embark doing my own because I nearly fainted when the builders price came in
Nice to see you’ve finally got a water tight roof....big relief I bet. Great work as always
Used rubber for roofs last year for my flat dorma & was a piece of cake, everything I needed to complete the whole job in a weekend & so far so good. Did a yearly inspection last month & still looks mint.👍
Doing my son’s at the end of the month with him glad I watch you doing yours first 👍good stuff Tim
Great work. I used the same company when I did my garage roof 18 months ago.
I was surprised how easy it was to do even on my own.
I installed a rubber membrane roof on my carport over twenty years ago. It is still doing the job. I do wish I had the edge trim that you put on. I would recommend this type roof to anyone. I took a leftover piece and lined the inside of my wife's goldfish pond we built later.
James Potter I was just about to ask this same question. We did my mums workshop/garage in 2001 with bitumen felt and it doesn’t leak yet but I know I will have to do it again in next 5 years or so. I was concerned it would degrade in the sun
@@whitacrebespoke The only problem we had was a tree limb fell and put a small hole in it. I glued a 6 inch square patch over the hole and it has been fine. That was several years ago.
Fantastic to see our Flex-R ClassicBond EPDM system via Rubber4Roofs being used, showcasing how straight forward our system is to be installed. Brilliant Job guys, love all your content. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for all the videos, i especially like this one as it took my bill down by £35 with the code, thanks very much restoration couple 👍
Great video to show people how easy it is Tim 👍
Thanks for the video, very easy to follow. i've just ordered my rubber roof and used your discount code. Thanks again..
We looked at all the possible options for our large flat roof (felt 🤦♂️, fibreglass, PVC) the EPDM was the most robust and simplest. We had quite a lot of detail areas (roof lantern and some weird corners) so got some pros in who were happy to work with us as additional labourers to save and learn at the same time. The results were great and the one thing they forget to tell you is it’s a fantastic sound deadening, so when the rain is heavy or hailing, your not deafened inside the building. Win! Great job by the way.
Your code just saved me £20 on a rubber roof. Thanks 👍
Yay! You're dried in. Great work, as always, Tim.
P.S. Glad it was only the camera that fell. For a moment, I thought you might have going with it. 😰
Thanks - Very helpful information for completing the roof of my RV
Great job done there fella, have installed that same stuff 7 yrs ago - if fitted right it will last forever, its really easy to fit and once done gives you peace of mind - awsome stuff !
Good to here. 👍
Hi and I really like this roof system, we’ve never done flat roofs but when we do, this will definitely be something to consider. Nice upstand detail, definitely the way to go. Really enjoyed this and looking forward to the next instalment 👍
Brilliant work as always looks great
Great video, I used the exact same stuff on our flat roof extension. So easy to fit. Looking forward to the next video
I'm having an ashfelt roof replaced with a rubber roof so your video gave me an Inside as to what the roofer will be doing. Thank you. 😊
I have a conservatory, need to replace roof, worried about the airflow, thinking 4x2 between 8x2 joists,so got airflow still
What a really impressive roof system!!
Fibreglass is so much better, wait couple of years with this when the glue no longer adheres the rubber to the boards.....giants balloon
nice clarification of epdm, thanks
I've got a Victorian house in Brighton that I'm slowly working on and the flat roof above what will become our main bathroom has been leaking for years, although some repairs were made just before purchase. when I walk on the edge nearest to the wall and the next floor there is a definite spongy bounce. I think joists must be rotten, so plan to rip off felt, repair and replace with EPDM. If original joists I'm guessing likely to be 150mm. If so, I'm thinking warm roof is the way to go. My wife also says it would be good to be able to sit up there and I fancy a skylight. But may just be a straight forward repair for now. Was going to get the builder in, but with diminishing budget, might DIY or throw myself into the mix. Thanks for the video. Really helpful!
this has been a great video im now going to have a go myself ,thanks .
Awesome vid 👌 deffo be doing this to my conservatory in the summer
Did my garage with my sons help about 5 years ago. Rubber for roofs were very helpful and like you pointed out they have a video. It's a bit hairy when your roofs exposed, but a relief when you've got the middle bit glued up. You can relax a little at that stage and enjoy finishing the trims. Enjoying the garage series Tim. Hope you're camera isn't permanently broken.
May I ask the rubber roof could damaged by sun or shrinking when extremely cold and expand in summer?
@juneliaoaw6319 Hi, the roof must be at least six years old now, and it still looks like new along with all the trim pieces. I would definitely do it again.
Excellent Excellent Excellent. I don’t know if this is Exactly how I seasoned pro would do it or not but it all looks good to me. 👏🏾👍🏾
Thank you for your video. Really helped me on mine .
Great video. I used the same stuff on my studio. Dead easy to install.
Great video...many thanks! Cheers.
Great that mate!... Nice work 💪🏻
Something to fill in my nightshift at work right now 😁
What do u do?
Jay Seal run the machines that make the tops for cans. The ring pull part to be exact!
Great job and another brilliant video. I am to lay my epdm from rubber4roofs in the next few weeks but concerned about the colder temperatures. Rubber4roofs tutorials are excellent and the roof covering will out last felt. Keep up the great work! 👍
Please name the felt.
@MrFlatroofer there are a number of independent reviews comparing the benefits of EPDM rubber coverings to traditional felt coverings. I am sorry but I'm not going to name all types of felt coverings.
@@MrFlatrooferany felt by the sounds of it, 50yr would take some beating 👍
Good effort. Use a blowtorch to get rid of the creases by slowly going over them To heat them out And brush at the same time. Or.... Leave it lated out on roof or garden for a day or 2.
Other thing is you can roller the whole roof with the waterbase. Let it dry until its transparent then role the rubber over it. This way you minimise getting any air locks..
And when pining the trims, don't knock them in tight. You need a bit wobble room for expansion of the trims.
Your timing couldn’t be better I’m just about to replace a flat roof and shall definitely use this.
Finally!! It’s feels like I’ve been waiting for ever!
Great video my friend thank you so much.
Wonderful helpful video thank you
i have to say, the little trim bits really finish it off nicely. another great job. and it's always great to have dad help out. (either dad or dad-in-law) :)
I was so happy to finally see this video. I have been researching this roofing for our outbuildings. We live in Scotland and are always replacing felt. No matter what the quality of the felt it always goes hard and cracks. Hubby was septic all but now you have done yours he will be convinced 😁 Great job and video.
@@bobmiller176 😂😂😂😂 auto correct is a funny old thing.
Great Job Man,, !!!
Great video, just what I was looking for. May I ask what pitch the flat roof is? I want to build a summer house and will be using this method for the roof. Thanks.
This should last about 5 years I am a property developer and I use a chap who's been doing this for over 25 years he gets a lot of work replacing what you have just put down he uses a plastic roll that comes with a life time guarantee
I brought some of the rubber stuff to recover a flat wide valley but after a wile it felt a bit thin and it just the same as a bike inner tube so i rang the flat roofing guy back and he sent me a roll of what he uses and its a lot better
I am not expert this is just my experience
I did my roof about 5 or 6 years ago in this rubber for roofs. Still looks brand new. Also comes with a 50 year warranty on the rubber. I'm 62 now so I'm pretty sure it will see me out.
Thanks great video, what is the brand of the trim around the roof?
Nice, thanks! Have to do a 12x 12 shed.
Having lived and worked with EPDM flat roofing a while I encourage the builder or contractor to consider having a slightly sloped roof surface. While flat designs do work ...they work better with sloped flat. We've found that adding areas of added rigid foam insulation under the roofing insulation create a slope for BETTER drainage. You have a roof not a pond.
encourage? thought this was mandatory. Does anyone build literal flat roofing? I assumed all 'flat' roofs were actually sloped like mine by means of firring strips or slanted joists.
Great job, a question I got my rubber roof ready to go on but what side of the rubber roof is the correct side to glue down ?
Thanks in advance
Thank you, used your code, £35 discount 👍
Hi just wondering where you buy your facia the treated one is 8inch x 22mm? Please could you let me know where you get it from i couldn't find anything at celco like that.
Thank you
Regards,
Alan
Is it best to fix studs direct to the wall or have them maybe 50mm off and fix them to the ground and roof joyce?
Can you point me to the video showing laying the OSB, for some reason I can't see it in your list of videos. Thanks.
I have used that company for years , I always used to let it rest for a hour then brush it and leave it for half hour the quickest way is after it’s reacted to doled in half a ply the glue and leave 150 mm from the edge then peel it back and use the contact additive had I of know I could of got you a very good discount ,
Did you sand the joints osb boards before you laid the epdm? Thanks
I put my rubber4roofs epdm down 8 years ago. It is nothingshort of fantastic so far. Expensive compared to felt but much easier for the diyer to install.
My tip, from experience, roll back don't fold back. If you fold back like a bed sheet like I did you can't put it back smooth. Rolling it back would have made it simple.
Also - it's heavy. I couldn't lift it so I had to build a ramp and winch it up. 6m x 14m workshop.
Agree, rolled much easier to lay over adhesive. Being a saddo I was working alone on a 4m x 6m roof, so used a gutter downpipe as centre tube, having taped ends of the epdm to the tube first, then epdm rolled up tightly across whole width.
Interesting, did you consider a fibreglass roof ?
Do those kerb trims follow the line of the roof slope or are they fitted level?
If they fit following the roof slope, will the front corner covers still clip on if the front fascia is cut plumb?
What adhesive you are using to make that rubber seat gluing for.
What about wider and longer roofs?? Can this material be overlapped ?
Did you prime the OSB first? If so what with? Cheers.
@The Restoration Couple great video as always, one thing I may have missed...how did you create the fall on this roof?
This roof just have wall plates set at different heights so the rafters are all sloped. The porch section in a future video was done with level joists and firring strips on top.
Hey dude. What thickness did you go for ? 1.2mm or 1.5mm looks great. Video is helpful cheers.
Good video, thanks, just had rubber membrane laid on an apex roof shed and the fitters never used any adhesive, saying the adhesive doesn't work, I dont think thats true, and think it should be glued down, so am going back to the company...
Have you had problems with bubbling on your Kempler roof if so how would you advise me to get rid of my bubbles. Thanking you in advance
Great video, really helpful. I'm considering tackling a flat garage roof with an EPDM replacement. It seemed reasonably straight forward. How big was the roof you covered? , it looks bigger than 30sq metres .
About 40.
Can this EPDM be applied on walls too, if not what is an alternative to wrap the walls that have no overhang ?
In California, I’d have to wonder how it would hold up in the heat here? Especially being black. Is there a white coat membrane that can be painted on to reflect sunlight?
Looks great! Is this the final covering or is something else still coming over top of it?
It’s usually left as it is although sometimes covered with ballast or even sedum. That will be. Future project for another build. 👍
Hello there. Great video, very helpful. Can I quiz you for some info please?. The type of board used and jointing technique / compound / glue? The run off angle as you mentioned a high end and a low end. Thank you. 👍
Watched other video so i see you used OSB. I have never used that. Is it as good as Ply?
Just revisiting this video before I embark on a new shed build... is there a slight fall off from front to back to ensure drainage into the gutter and prevent pooling?
There us a minimum fall for any flat roof so worth checking. Minimum is 1:80 I think but more the better.
Is this system worth it? Surely better to do a bitumen roof?
Just checking you left expansion gaps on all your trim pieces and only glued one side of the gap cover and corner trims 👍
Hopefully the expansion gaps were obvious in the footage but important point. Still not glued trim covers so good shout on only one side, makes perfect sense. 👌
Hi Tim, love the channel btw. Where you raised the height of the roof and had gaps between old brick and top of roof are you just cladding that with timber to cover? Or filling in with more brick?
Still undecided. Either block and render like below or possibly look at oak cladding if we apply for planning.
Hi roughly how much will it cost to do a 18msquare flat roof? Any idea . Thank you
Quick tip to anyone watching who is going to do their own flat roof, fix your gutter brackets to the facia before fitting the drip detail especially at the highest slope of the guttering as the gutter drip detail ideally needs to be lapping into the guttering, fixing gutter brackets after the drip detail is slightly problematic
You local to Wigan
@@onthetrowel1895 what are you after?
@@monday7150 rubber roof fitting, sorted now though, thanks for the reply
Could you tell me the discount code for rubber 4 roofs
Great video. Que. Why didnt you opted for fiberglass roof? That looks easier to install then EPDM and more durable then EPDM?
Definitely not easier to install plus it is liable to crack if not installed correctly
Did you add UPCV fascias on the beams? If so, wondering how you managed to get it to fit perfect under the trims without a nasty looking joint (especially if cutting the fascia to size)
no, painted timber.
Flat pack furniture instructions? I’d be bug--ed then!😂 vinyl roller would probably have helped?
Lol nice edge protection,
HSE are going to love this one .
5k fine for no edge protection.
Great job , want to do my garage roof but it's joined on to a neighbours and it's felt, can this be joined to felt?
How did you manage to do this? I have the same situation and was wondering about how to do it?
@@y.bother3804 Hi had a reply but can't remember if it was from a fibre glass company, it was a joining strip you had to put a load of sealant under and screw it down, but could not get any info to go over the fillet on the edge of the garage, so I just had it refelted. Hope this makes sense .
I'd have fitted it over the fascia first with a 9/10mm OSB overhang.
Yep ... EPDM is the way to go - so easy! We left ours a week to settle - no creases at all.
Bit extreme
@@nickydavies4 Yeah! Probably but it was quite large (6m x 5m) and was tightly folded with big creases. Anyway, we weren't ready to do it so it served well as a tarpaulin for the week!
If u fully adhere with contact glue instead of water based rubbish the creases wont be an issue for future reference:)
@@nickydavies4 Interesting point. However, did my boys shed with contact all over but found glue gave off such a lot of vapour that it nearly asphyxiated us and formed bubbles under the membrane. Admittedly it was about 75 deg Fahrenheit so probably not the best day to do it! Anyway, it hasn't leaked after 6 years. Thanks for you input.
@@colinmiles1052 the reason u got bubbles under the membrane is because u didn't leave it flash off long enough just some advise nearly 15 years laying this on up to 1000 square meter roofs and trained to commercial standard by Firestone manufacturer:)
You just leave the pressure treated wood fascia exposed under the gutter?
Hi how did waterproof the soil pipe ?
I have very similar detail and my roofer made a right bode of it so it leaks .
If you look at the EPDM porch roof it shows there.
can you grow kudzu on a rubber roof without degrading it?
I love these english guys doing the Roof there accents make me feel like the Butlers doing my Roof.
Hi mate did you fill the screw holes with anything that hold the OSB down ? Thanks
No. Just set the nails/screws slightly below the surface. I did think about it but that was just my ocd! The epdm is fine over the shallow holes and any small expansion gaps.
@@TheRestorationCouple ok thanks I had to ask because before I do my shed lol was bugging me
why did you leave strip of chipboard out at the end of joists
It was not shown but RUSS tape should have or will have been fitted at the angle change near the wall to prevent the epdm pulling off and out of the wall over time.
Site?
Will you exstend the rain pipe from the house or let the water go on that new roof?.
It’s not much of the main roof that comes down there as there are two down pipes. It’s always just gone onto the lower roof so may leave as is.
How does this stuff fair up against cats clawing it?
Excellent video! What grade did you buy, the 1.2 or 1.5? 😁
This was 1.2.
That's a simple roof to lay, have been doing Epdm roofing over 20 years, I have never adhered a roof system directly on the deck, must be the British way?
