Good morning Ali, I’ve just applied rubber to my garden room and have these tips which made it really easy to do on my own. The first thing I did was roll the EPDM on a length of down pipe which simplified the process of applying the rubber to the glue, simply rolling. Secondly instead of repeatedly dipping my paint roller using a tray I found it much easier to pour a line of glue directly to the OSB and the simply spread with the roller to a width of about 800mm the stick and repeat. Adopting this method took just over an hour and a quarter to do a 5.5 x 4.5 Meter roof on my own.
Great series mate - the time and effort you’ve put into making these videos is very much appreciated. I’m certain you’ve given many people, including me, the confidence and knowhow to tackle something that was otherwise a bit daunting. Well done and thanks.
Thanks for the discount code Ali, it saved me a good chunk. Fitted mine today while the weather is (just) warm enough. I thought I would share a quick tip with anybody still to do theirs - I rolled it over a 4m 110mm pipe which gave it a really neat roll, when rolling out there was literally no bubbles/ creases. Also completed it solo! Thanks again, Stu.
Great video I didn't realize how easy it is to install, or replace a flat roof . I have had so many so called roofers giving me unreal prices for a roof . Thanks for putting together a well made video on the warm PVC roof .
Such a helpful video, thank you! I've just started a music studio project in my back garden, somewhat smaller than yours, 4m x 2.5m. I have always enjoyed DIY but felt a real novice approaching the project and, as someone else said before me, somewhat daunted by the whole thing. However, your video has been absolutely brilliant, particularly for me around the flat roof and the EPDM covering; I had been planning a pitched roof but you've convinced me to change my design! Many thanks.
These step-by-step videos are so useful! Thank you so much. They are my go-to information and learning resource. I have my foundation and floor in. Walls are next.
Planning on doing a little garden room ,the videos you have done have really given me the green light to get on with it and how to even do it ....Great job Ali
Thanks for posting these videos Ali, they are incredibly helpful and done with some good humour as well. As other posters have commented you are giving us all the confidence and knowledge to crack on - brilliant!
Superb series. I have been asked by my daughter and her boyfriend to build a summer room / office for them and your advice and videos has been informative and will be very beneficial as we (well, I, really....they will mostly be gophers and cuppa makers!) design, plan and build it. Really keen to see the end result and further updates. A big thumbs up! (Will soon be emailing you for the roof link)
Good to see another of the Dymock/Dimmock clan on board with the channel! Sounds like you've got your work cut out. My plans which are very rough can be found for free on my website if you want them. Got your email, will reply later on 👍
That was an excellent overview on EPDM. I've done several flat roofs using this system, including one pretty huge area which took 3 of us to lift the sheet up! It's a really good system though, and the first one I did about 15 years ago is still in great shape. EPDM ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned, easy, quick, and lasts. I'll just mention a couple of things for anyone thinking of using EPDM. If you're doing this on a warmer summer day then it's possible to lay the sheet out and the sun relaxes any creases very quickly, so you don't have to leave it long before it can be glued down. It's also better to seal the folds (called pigs ears) together and then onto the sides using impact adhesive rather than staple them (I use some of the black sealant round them just to make sure), and when fixing the the kerb trims avoid the temptation to use lots of nails or they will ripple over time. I've previously used another company for the various products but I'll give the firm you mentioned a go for an extension roof I'm doing in the next couple of weeks as they do some external reveal joints that look just the job, along with a big shed I have behind the garage . I'll pop an email to you and ask if the discount code is available. Thanks for the vid!
Superb video, nicely thought out, clear narration and extremely useful as I begin my own project of replacing the flat roof of my shed with some OSB type 3 and EPDM rubber.
LOVE THE WAY YOU POLITELY PRONOUNCE ROOVES CORRECTLY EVEN THOUGH THE COMPANY INCORRECTLY SPELL THE WORD. WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THAT THE PLURAL OF ROOF IS ROOFS? LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! YOU ARE A JOY TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO. KEEP ON CREATING ALI.
Heheh you got me thinking about this. I think I learnt it was ROOVES at school but it seems to have changed to ROOFS over the years, though to pronounce it so would just be weird. I've seen ELFS creeping into people's lexicon too. 100% ELVES lol, Tolkein would turn in his grave!
YESSSSS!!!!!! Looking so much like what I’m planning. I’ve watched so many videos online but sometimes difficult to source products in UK (cement board etc) and they don’t always explain everything in the detail you do. I’ve found the rubber 4 roofs site before and it’s great. NOW GET THE NEXT VIDEO UP!!!!
yeh cement board is not well explained. They're most garden room companies and when you ask a question, they don't want to give away the info! Glad the videos are helpful.
Ali Dymock it’s widely available in the US, Ireland and parts of Europe but limited to commercial projects in uk. Really cost prohibitive for small projects like this.
The level of detail is fantastic, as is the standard of work !! Another really well done episode. I feel like a junkie for the next episode.... hooked and begging for more 😂 Regards Paul
Really good description.I couldn't make my mind up on the membrane,so went with the stronger roofing felt. Absolutely love it and now use as office and bedroom when needed.
Like some kind of Netflix series, I have just binge watched the entire lot. Great work. I'm about to start my building which at 3x3.5M should be within my grasp!
If I can assist anyway in some filming for you then let me know, I appreciate how it can take a while to edit things. I run this little company alongside my normal job. www.lcafilms.co.uk
Very kind offer. The hardest part I find is working out exactly what information I need to get across/would want to know myself, matching that up with footage I have and then making it a fun watch as well! What video editor do you use? i'm on iMovie which is limited!
Another great video. Getting my timber delivered today to start my man cave build and pretty much following a scaled down version of your design. Thanks for all of the technical explanation it’s really helped my plans as much of the other stuff out there is not uk focused. Cheers
Hi Ali Paul again another great video the EPDM roof looks great and so does the fascia boards it might have been easier for you to fit your soffit boards first then your fascia boards but with not watching your next video yet you might have had reason for this like i said in one of my comments a few videos back i served my time as a joiner but my father is roofer and ran his own roofing and building company for years i used to work with him at weekends and summer holidays a lot when i was younger anyway in 2012 we partnered up and started our own roofing and building company in Edinburgh when it came to flat roofing my father had always used built up felt roofing using the torch on method etc until we started up together we started to get a lot of enquiries regarding GRP / EPDM etc so we went and done a course with HERTALAN there a supplier of EPDM roofing systems its a great product with a 50 yr product guarantee the flat roof of your built was great being able to lay one sheet but for people out there that are thinking of using EPDM but the roofs an odd shape or size and using one roll (sheet) is not an option HERTALAN do a line of EPDM called easyweld where you can buy rolls that are 1.4m x 20m that have a uv-resistant weldable strip that can be sealed together with a hot air gun giving a perfectly watertight seal i thought i would mention it incase anyone was doing or planning a project you can check out there products at www.hertalan.co.uk
Another good video Ali, I have actually never used this kind of roof product as never had the time to do the research. Was surprised at the cost and I am looking forward to using one now. Thanks again for the great explanation.
Your video's are amazing. Watching them all multiple times because we are gonna build our own new roof on our garden office. Fantastic mate! The only annoying thing is that we live in the Netherlands where it is quite hard to find parts as people tend to outsource these type of projects. But I managed to find everything so far! Looking forward to the next video!
Cheers Brian! Having trouble hooking up the waste pipe etc at the moment but once I get it sorted I'll be able to power through to completion I reckon!
really informative Ali, I'm just looking at idea's for my next build as my current summer house no longer fit's the bill and the style your building here is the look I'm after for an all year use garden retreat.
I’ve done quite a few of these roofs and found sometimes the air bubbles will not go even when done and dusted. I found that if you use a heat gun on the bubbles they will go down. Not too much heat, just enough, a bit like a hot tap. But it needs to be done when laying, not when the adhesive has dried. I use ‘rubber for roofs’ as my go to company as it’s so easy. It gets delivered to your door. Rubber flat roofs are definitely the easiest of all the systems and anyone who’s a little bit practical will do this with ease. Cheers
Can't Wait Any Longer. Is the next episode ready yet pleaseeeeeeeeee? Great job. Loving this project. Activating the bell so I don't miss it. Thanks for sharing.
Btw I'm looking forward to your next video with door and windows fitting. I'm thinking of adding wash basin with instant water heater to mine but need to check if it's allowed. Soundproofing is another aspect, as I want to use the garage for watching movies...so many plans for this. I'm really getting obsessed with this design and ideas..😄
Love this series. It's been so helpfull for my own project. I'm just looking at facia / soffit and was wondering where you got yours (the price looks good).
Thanks for taking the time to record your build. Lots of useful info in there. Much appreciated. Currently build in progress and just wondered if you still have codes for rubber 4 roofs and facia expert please?
Fantastic videos, thanks for uploading. I'm finally getting round to starting my project! Did you do a video showing how to attach the guttering on the roof?
Hi There Great video series, gave me the confidence to do a EDPM roof myself. Question: did you fill in the expansion gaps in the OSB at all? e.g with silicone or something? , if not will the EDPM "sag" down the gap a bit? or does it span the gap OK? Also is there still a discount code around - these roof materials seem quite expensive....Thanks A lot Richard (HollyAmelia)
Love this series - working through all the videos and am at the roof stage. What colour did you use for your EPDM Roof edge trims - back or anthracite?
Hi Ali, thanks for the video, was there a particular way you fold the rubber on the corners? Also could you give details on first part of gutter trim. Cheers
Perfect thanks Ali and keep those videos coming. Want to know how to put the windows and doors in so look forward to your next instalment. Any clue as to when it might be.
Additionally, I don’t see the point of using contact adhesive since the edges are held down by trim. Since I wasn’t ready to put my trim on for a couple of days I just put off cuts lengths of OSB right up to the edge and weighed these down with bricks. Worked a treat.
Great project and fantastically informative!!! Have to say, no offence intended but I’m just not convinced by the rubber roof. I just can’t imagine that it’s durable over 10 - 20 years. I myself am planning a build and was toying with a couple of different roofing methods. Initially I was going to do corrugated, insulated aluminium sheets or perhaps even a fibre glass roof. I decided instead to go with plastic tiles. They are solid and are rated for 40+ years. Also can be added to roofs with a pitch at minimum of 12.5 degrees.
great videos and I cannot believe ive watched them all already. when will we be having the video for the windows and doors? cannot wait to start mine now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I just had a similar roof put on my home (1950s, flat roof) and note that in a couple of places the rain is coming off the drip edge then going towards the house (wind?) is there something you did to help prevent rain going from the house? The overhang is 1-2 feet at different areas of the house. Thank you!!
Hi Ali, great series and brilliant work -- watched 7 parts in 1 sitting; Have a garden project for a 5x4 den, however the the "shed/cabin" is in kit form but am adding my own twists like the EPDM, Insulation, extending the existing concrete base (knocked down old "workshop") so have to continue with the base as is and adding decking -- all on a 2 way sloping garden!!. it's going to be fun LOL; Your tips and tricks are very useful and i wish i had come across your site earlier as I have already set the wheels in motion and ordered a lot of stuff from Builders depot -- may have designed it differently. I will be referring back to the videos o "pick your brains", keep up the good work -- whats your next project?
Sounds like a plan Pradeep! I think it's a good middle ground. Buy something simple like a well made large shed then add in all the extras. I really rate Builder Depot! So next project is the new house, I have a couple of videos up of that. i've just finished a side gate, so video on that in due course and then I'm just figuring out how to go about it and seeing if I can find a supplier! Feel free to pick my brains at any point. I'm planning to do garden room videos to the death until all questions are answered lol
Hi Ali, best start-to-end series I've seen with loads of valuable advice, priceless!! Will start my garden office in April but will be half your size. I've seen some roof designs cladded sides (no fascia) and a front fascia but with no roof trim visible. How does the EPDM fix to the edges?
Just found you and this series is perfect to help me with what I need to do. Please hurry up though as I'd like to watch the whole series before starting. I have questions though. 1/ because you went for planning permission do you have to conform to building regs too? 2/ with permission being not 2.5 from a boundary could I start my room at 2.55 and slope to 2.45 as long as 2.5 height was not 2.5 from boundary? 3/ at the start you talked about costs. How have your costs compared? 4/ will you cover electrics and plumbing?
Hey. That's cool, I'm getting through it as quickly as I can, other life commitments, namely my job, do get in the way though! 1. No, the two are separate from each other other 2. I'm a bit confused but basically if it's within 2m of a boundary no part of the garden room can be above 2.5m height. If you get planning then those permitted development rules go out the window and you can ask for what you like (within reason) 3. I do mention costs and show material costs throughout the videos but will do an overall budget at the end of the series. I think up to Part 11 I spent around £7kish. I think it will come in around £13k but every garden room is different size, height, materials etc etc so it can be done much cheaper. 4. I will but won't be doing them myself but will explain everything to the best of my ability. :)
You don't have long to wait now ;) I think I'll use standard cladding with this, recommended by a viewer: www.rawlinspaints.com/home/fire-retardant-paints/timber-plasterboard/128-zeroflame-fire-retardant-treatment.html#/23-size-5l/1227-colour-colourless
Hello I'm looking at you from Belgium. I watched your video number 11 with the French subtitles for this video but the following videos are subtitled in English. Will it be possible for you to put the french subtitles for all your videos please? It would be really great because your explanations are well explained and well schematized. Thank you in advance. And you did a very good job with your garden room.
Was going to ask the same! And yes totally agree this series has been mega helpful, the fact that you explain your decisions and alternatives along the way is great so we can tweak to our needs but follow a process that works.. my walls and rafters went up yesterday 🙂
Hi everyone, Rubber4Roofs are offering 10% discount to viewers. Feel free to send me an email at hello@alidymock.com and I'll send you the discount code you're after. Cheers!
Hi Ali - I've been following your build whilst mine is going up. Everything you have posted has been invaluable. Thank you. One question about fascia boards - my timber frame fascia (which is basically identical to yours before the UPVC fascia) is only 130mm, so I can easily get a upvc fascia of the correct size. I currently have the EPDM relaxing on the roof, and the next step is trim and fascia board. My question to you, if I may: does the bumper trim overlap the fascia board? I would like to know whether I need to install the fascia board first.. Cheers!
Hi Cameron. That's right: fascia>epdm> edge trims. That way if the seal of the edge trim fails and water gets underneath it will fun down the outside of the fascia as the EPDM overlaps it rather than getting behind the fascia and causing trouble!
Um as mentioned it is what most garden room companies use, I found lost of good videos explaining how to do it and it's DIY friendly. If I were to do another one I'd look into using fibreglass but probably wouldn't use felt, certainly not the type that might go on a shed-there's more advance felt which might be suitable.
Hi Ali, These videos are great and have answered many questions, specifically the detail on the roof finish. I have a quote from Rubber4Roofs can I apply for discount with your code, if it’s still available? Thanks
hi mate, thanks for the wonderful video I just have a quick question as I installed my roof this morning when the temperature was 12 degree and by the time i finished it dropped to 8 degree and after 5 hours of installation/adhesion the temperature dropped to 4 degree and will stay teh same all night long. does that mean it wont cure properly? or is there anything i can do ?
Hi Sid, I'm sure you've found your answer one way or another by now but my guess is that it was fine and no there's nothing you could really do about it anyway. Let us know!
I'm building a garden room currently and have the EPDM on, but I opted against the Sure Edge trims as I think they look rather plasticy. I've been searching for an alternative that will provide a more contiguous fascia but it seems there is nothing on the market between the cheap Sure Edge system and expensive aluminium systems like Alumasc Skyline fascias. Anyone got any recommendations?
Hi, where did you get those flashing corners you have fitted to the window and door openings? Also, how long did you leave the Tyvek uncovered for? I am using the house wrap and it says you have 4 months until the UV starts to degrade it, but I might need a bit longer. Thanks.
Ali . Loving the series and looking forward to part 12 and so on . How did you attach the Tyvek as I am at that section on my build and looking at yours I cannot see any fixings are did you simply staple it to the OSB. The cap nailer I ha e seen used is very expensive and I would not use it again so looking for alternatives. Please advise. You are I doing a great job and have inspired my although it is 4m x 3.6m . I have referenced everything from your videos😀Thanks Russ
Thanks, that's cool. You certainly don't need anything so pricey. Something like this will do the job nicely: www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-light-duty-staple-gun/66901

Just like myself, you will have a go at any DIY task, usually done alone, one way or another you get the job done. Keep up the good work.

Just found this channel going to have a binge watch 👍👍
Thanks for the discount code Ali, it saved me a good chunk. Fitted mine today while the weather is (just) warm enough. Good description of work again

Love these videos!
Giving us the confidence to get started on our studio build.
Thanks for making everything so clear.
I love it and so quiet design showing your program
Great videos.
Just about to start a similar project
Really happy I’ve found your RUclips channel...👌
Great planning and attention to detail - very informative and thanks for sharing 👍
Brilliant video. Exactly what I wanted to find. I want to start one soon and this is giving me the confidence to jump right in. Thanks a lot.

Superb video, nicely thought out, clear narration and extremely useful as I begin my own project of replacing the flat roof of my shed with some OSB type 3 and EPDM rubber.
thanks Zola, I appreciate that
Great Video again. Looking forward to the windows + door installation video!

Just found your channel.. Very nice job on the roof.. Looks great.. Isn't it a nice clean look and fabulous product for flat roofs
Yeh I was really pleased, GRP looks interesting too but EPDM does look great for sure!

Cheers Brian! Having trouble hooking up the waste pipe etc at the moment but once I get it sorted I'll be able to power through to completion I reckon!
Thanks for another great video...please post part 12 soon!!!
Such great detail and so many handy tips. Thank you for documenting and sharing the build. I've caught up now. Can't wait to see it finished.
me too!
really informative Ali, I'm just looking at idea's for my next build as my current summer house no longer fit's the bill and the style your building here is the look I'm after for an all year use garden retreat.
Another amazingly detailed and fabulously well explained video. Thanks Ali :-)
Loving your work 👍 will be revisiting your channel frequently in the summer as doing a hot roof on dormers !cheers

Fantastic video, much respect and inspiration for self-building :)
cheers Eddy
Btw I'm looking forward to your next video with door and windows fitting.
I'm thinking of adding wash basin with instant water heater to mine but need to check if it's allowed.
Soundproofing is another aspect, as I want to use the garage for watching movies...so many plans for this. I'm really getting obsessed with this design and ideas..😄
Definitely allowed. You can get taps now that act like electric showers so no need for a big box under or above your sink.
Excellant video as usual! Looking forward to the next part
Great series well done you done really well doing this by your self that’s hard graft 👍
Cheers! Hard graft but great fun!
Crikey, I never knew uPVC expands! good to know. And I thought wood movement was bad
Well done mate, looks better than mine!
Great stuff Ali fantastic job bud 👍gonna start something similar in spring :)
Best of luck with it Matt, now is a great time of year to plan it out and get ready for the change in clocks come end of March :D
Love that style!
Looking fantastic
Nice job thanks for sharing
Love this series. It's been so helpfull for my own project.
I'm just looking at facia / soffit and was wondering where you got yours (the price looks good).
Simply impressed. Very though out work and would love to get your opinions on some stuff I want to do. Thanks for the vid.
excellent tutorials
Thanks for taking the time to record your build. Lots of useful info in there. Much appreciated. Currently build in progress and just wondered if you still have codes for rubber 4 roofs and facia expert please?
You;re welcome. Just pop me an email at hello@alidymock.com and I'll pop the codes across to you 👍
Fantastic videos, thanks for uploading. I'm finally getting round to starting my project! Did you do a video showing how to attach the guttering on the roof?
Looking good. Love the grey colour.
Yeh I wasn't sure how it would turn out but I'm pleased. Looking forward to your pirate chest vid!
Ali - simply fantastic vids. Thanks for posting your considerable efforts. Do you know when you'll be posting Part 12?
Hi Gus, it'll be at least a couple of weeks. I'm away for the next two weekends. Also want to move on with the project some more before I post.
No worries Ali. Lots to get on with! Cheers
Thank you for a great video!
Really appreciate the info and detail go into
Awesome series man! Answered some basic questions I've always had about the process of building. Thanks! : )
Glad to hear it!
Just about to do this myself today... How did you approach the corners when applying the contact adhesive around the edge?
Maybe next week :)
Additionally, I don’t see the point of using contact adhesive since the edges are held down by trim. Since I wasn’t ready to put my trim on for a couple of days I just put off cuts lengths of OSB right up to the edge and weighed these down with bricks. Worked a treat.
Great videos.
Do you have a video for fitting the ext cladding?
Cheers
Graeme
Great project and fantastically informative!!! Have to say, no offence intended but I’m just not convinced by the rubber roof. I just can’t imagine that it’s durable over 10 - 20 years. I myself am planning a build and was toying with a couple of different roofing methods. Initially I was going to do corrugated, insulated aluminium sheets or perhaps even a fibre glass roof. I decided instead to go with plastic tiles. They are solid and are rated for 40+ years. Also can be added to roofs with a pitch at minimum of 12.5 degrees.
great videos and I cannot believe ive watched them all already. when will we be having the video for the windows and doors? cannot wait to start mine now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
haha. Another couple of weeks, just working on other things at the moment!
I just had a similar roof put on my home (1950s, flat roof) and note that in a couple of places the rain is coming off the drip edge then going towards the house (wind?) is there something you did to help prevent rain going from the house? The overhang is 1-2 feet at different areas of the house. Thank you!!
Great video. Can I ask where the first part of the gutter trim was ?
Great video and channel, out of curiosity did you ever get that discount sorted with rubber4roofs ?
Impressive as ever Crime Watch boy. You made me laugh.
Seriously Ali, it’s looking great! Well done.
haha thanks Cheryl
Very informative good sharing of vedio new friend
Kamusta kaibigan 👋
1. No, the two are separate from each other other
2. I'm a bit confused but basically if it's within 2m of a boundary no part of the garden room can be above 2.5m height. If you get planning then those permitted development rules go out the window and you can ask for what you like (within reason)
:)
super travail
Looking forward to part 12. What cladding dit you use to meet building regs
Hi Ali. Is it still possible to get the discount with Rubber4roofs ?
Seriously good series btw.
Was going to ask the same! And yes totally agree this series has been mega helpful, the fact that you explain your decisions and alternatives along the way is great so we can tweak to our needs but follow a process that works.. my walls and rafters went up yesterday 🙂
I think you both worked out you could email me for it :) For others: hello@alidymock.com
@@AliDymock yes thanks, got good saving on the roof! Also how come you never did a video on the cladding? Not that I'm complaining!
Do y9u have a discou t code foe this
Hi everyone, Rubber4Roofs are offering 10% discount to viewers. Feel free to send me an email at hello@alidymock.com and I'll send you the discount code you're after. Cheers!
email sent, thank you.
Great vids, when’s the next one coming?
soon! :)
Hi Ali,Just planning a garden build myself. What was your reasoning on choosing EPDM over felt.enjoying your comprehensive vids
Nice job so far! Did not think about ventilation ?
Hi Ali, These videos are great and have answered many questions, specifically the detail on the roof finish.
I have a quote from Rubber4Roofs can I apply for discount with your code, if it’s still available? Thanks
Hi mate, great video. I’m loving the colour of your fascia. Do you know who manufacture this product. Cheers, Tom
All UPVC fascia/soffit/guttering companies do anthracite grey now happily
hi mate, thanks for the wonderful video
I just have a quick question as I installed my roof this morning when the temperature was 12 degree and by the time i finished it dropped to 8 degree and after 5 hours of installation/adhesion the temperature dropped to 4 degree and will stay teh same all night long. does that mean it wont cure properly? or is there anything i can do ?
Hi Sid, I'm sure you've found your answer one way or another by now but my guess is that it was fine and no there's nothing you could really do about it anyway. Let us know!
I'm building a garden room currently and have the EPDM on, but I opted against the Sure Edge trims as I think they look rather plasticy. I've been searching for an alternative that will provide a more contiguous fascia but it seems there is nothing on the market between the cheap Sure Edge system and expensive aluminium systems like Alumasc Skyline fascias. Anyone got any recommendations?
Did you use a damp membrane on the base?
Great videos, as a trade person I am very impressed with your work and explanations.
Is there still a discount code for EPDM?
Thank you.
Cool, I used rubber 4 roofs on my last shef
I also used a stapler with stainless staples, but then cut squares of Tyvek tape and taped over all of the staples to make it fully water tight.
