- Full roof structure build tutorial. We use 5x2 c16 for these roofs as height is everything as you know. If its more than 3mtr span we double up on the timbers. Ive built this alone today whilst trying to do you a video to show how its constructed, so please excuse the poor camera work. Thanks for watching

That was one video that I’ve wanted to see. Thanks Liam for another detailed build 🙏👏
Love the upside down roof hangers tip , wish I had thought of that when making my carport
Good to see you back and with a smile. Great information on that roof. Keep up the good work
Watched loads of your videos and still enjoying and learning new tips - thanks - top job!
Just found your channel last week currently watching all your videos back.. Great content keep it coming. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Brilliant! Love watching you and you explain it so well.
Great video. I didn't realise you did all that additional strengthening on the sides of the roof overhang. 👍
I’m going to build myself a garden room and this has really helped me. Thank you
I'm just about to do my own shed and all your videos have been really helpful, your work is top draw. Thanks for the videos 👏 👏
Decent, finished the back wall today and should be ready with this by the end of tomorrow! Such good info, thanks
Can't tell you how useful this video is mate. Gonna watch through all of em now
Cracking video Liam. Lots of detail. Well present. Thanks.
Great job Liam .... you make it look so easy and brilliantly described .... you're getting me motivated to do my own garden room 😊👍
Another amazingly informative video, that thankfully breaks down your longer start-to-finish video I've watched numerous times. It gives intricate tips that I wouldn't have considered before, such as striking the string line between roof joists, rather than measuring. I'm hoping to start my garden office in a few weeks, maybe I'll make some vids to show how I've used many of your techniques.
Appreciate the time you take to make these videos. Full of detail and explained simply. Keep it up 👍🏻
Brilliant videos, always! Really enjoy watching them.
My hat goes off to you mate all on your own still managed to film 🥳
Brilliant illustration on the video will and good way of getting over constructing a rake wall by setting out to the lowest height with that extra bit of timber filling the void. Regards Pat
Great video and your opening with the white board is a real help to give us an overview of the project. 👍 Thanks for taking the time to film.
great video - I am now fully addicted to your build projects
Glad you enjoy it!
Cheers for this. I'd be really interested to see up close how you detail the corners of the single ply membrane and fix the edge trim & guttering. Maybe you've covered that already in a previous episode but I must have missed it. 👍
Excellent video as always. Thanks for sharing.
King of the garden rooms strikes again with another informative tutorial and filming it solo . Top man.
This needs to be said. Thank you for taking the time to do these vids mate. When I'm building my man hut /grow room these vids will be useful as.
Grow room 🤣
william griffin if I can do it with pallets I'm sure as I can do it properly with a little help form your vids mate👍🏻
Super helpful as I’m about to build my own 5x3m workshop. Had been trying to think about how I might attach my roof joists and hadn’t considered using joist hangers upside down! Genius, I’m also a fan of overkill where it makes sense. Cheers!
love over engineering! lets me sleep at night!
That's a solid roof, you could save money and make your own timber beams for over those wide door ways. Laminate two 5" by 2" with a rip of 1/2" plywood in the middle, 👍😁🔨🇮🇪
ive watched so many of these types of vidoes and i have to say yours is the best. no nonsense and straight to the point. great quality builds too. ( im an Construction Manager )
How would i calculate what size of roof joints i need to use for 8 m long x 3.5m wide with 400 spacing
@@staceycook5067 6x2 joists (150mm x 50mm) will span 3.5 metres at 400mm centres but if you are restricted by overall height then you can use 5x2 doubled up ( gets very expensive that way considering your practically using twice the timber)
absolute brill, im just starting a build 16ft x 10ft and was unsure about the overhanging roof, this has helped 110$, very informative. Thank you
Enjoyed the slower pace and higher detail in this one. Thought I was in for a rollercoaster when I seen you had released a vid over 3 mins long, but no. Nice and chill. Cheers mate.

I’m so grateful to you for all this excellent advice - I owe you a beer!
This is by far your best video. MasterClass in how to do a flat roof. I’m going to copy this step by step in the next two weeks doing my own shed. Cheers again. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Did you do your shed?
@@pofrani I did actually. The dance studio is up and running!!!
Have never built anything in my life but have watched all your videos probably 6 times over and am at the roof stage of a 4m x 5 m man cave build messed up once or twice but buzzing how well things are going so far would not have even attempted to do this without watching your step by step videos that you made using basic tools hat of to you for taking the time out to teach others and always having a smile on your face thanks!!
PS thanks my missus thinks I am great?? Not bad for a dumb scaffolder?? Appreciate what I have done thanks to your knowledge 😊
How did it turn out?
GEAT video. Need a camera crew!!!! Great instructions and overly informative. 10/10. Proper helpful!!!!!
Hi Liam - Started by build today, rods are in!
Shoes and floor joists arrive Monday... Its harder than your team make it look - especially asa 1 man crew..
I've watched a few other providers, one of them wrapped the bare stud walls in membrane - no OSB at all and even rested the floor joists on a few old bricks, unevenly stacked - cowboys....
Lovely jubbly. Good day's work on your own!
Saving this. Love the video, thanks, super helpful
Fantastic video 👌
Excellent work 👌🏼
Class, great information,thanks fella!
Great video very helpful
Fantastic mate. Another great video. How do we go about purchasing the generic plans? 5 x 3 would be perfect for me please.
Good stuff! I'm looking at cladding options for the back and side of my build that wont be seen, could you recommend any sheet materials I could use instead of feather edge. Keep up the good videos.
Nice video with good information. I have a double size garage (5.2 x 6m) in brick that I am going to put a sloping flat roof on. The tiled roof was ready to collapse so I removed it but kept the brick work, with some remedial work. Can you comment on the roof plans for this size, keeping to the standard height of 2.5m. Thanks in advance Stuart.
Thank you for making these videos. They have helped me greatly in making a shed and now I am working on a covered deck.
My question for you is my structure is 3.658m x 4.877m ) 12 feet by 16 feet)
In your video you mention briefly that if the span is over 3 m I would have to double up the joists.
Can you expand on this please.
Thank you,
Rick Mills

Hi Liam I’m about to do this roof tomorrow. Ive done the wall the past few days from watching your videos. The shed is 14ft by 11ft
Quickest way ever to do walls and plywood. Wish me luck for the people of Ireland!!🇮🇪
You’ll smash it mate 🇮🇪
@@thegardenroomguru didn’t go according plan Liam. I put the rafters in at 400 gaps but left my sheets of plywood for the roof i have to cut now. Think from the video you put them in 400 gaps to suit the insulation. I only noticed it towards the end of the rafters been finished!! No big deal to cut the Plywood.
Amazing job
Thank you so much mate!!
Yet another great video explaining things. Could you possibly do a video on how to work out the best way to position the 8'x4' OSB boards & T&G roof boards you use on the roof. Thanks
Boarding out is the next one mate. Should be on the end link 👌
Awesome, thank you for the reply
Love this video!
I can’t wait for the generic plans to go up - looking for 6m x 3.5m with bifold doors, and a corner window 😇 is it a pain to put a skylight in?
Thanks for the great video.
Does the perpendicular small joists for side overhang needs joist hanger or using just screws are fine.
Thanks
Liam, love the detailed videos. Hoping to start a project like this. Would you have a materials list for a 5x3m build??
Yes mate, there’s 13 different size options on the website and a 5x3 is one of them
saving this for spring, need to scrap the current summer kitchen roof, the guy who built it was an idiot
Great job . I'm hoping to sort my masonary roof out ASAP.
3.4m death amd 3.3m width it has a single potch (not truly check but will ) of about 15° shitty tin corrugated . No insulation .(although I did initially follow a roofers advice if fixing some below roof sheets deeming useless).
So thinking new joists (original 4x2 were laid flat side meaning less strength. There's an rsj as additional support central perpendicular to joists .
Joists are rotten..so thinking osb 15mm sheathing entire roof section over new 4x4 400 centres as the rsj will give it extra support ..then membrane (gor that already) and reppace metal sheets maybe some additional insulation pir underside leaving air gaps ?. Ty in advance
Nice work btw neat
Love the videos! What angle of degree do you use for these pent roofs?
Hi, great video, thanks. I’ve just built a breeze block shed and now adding the roof. I’m an amateur at this and going to try it out. Does the wood need to be treated timber or can I use standard Wickes studwork CLS 38x89x3000?
Thanks for all the videos you post! I'd love to see another video of the cladding being installed, particularly on the side walls where there is the pitch of the roof to contend with, do you cut the top of the vertical cladding to the angle of the roof and measure each plank? Also, do you cover that detail with a trim? i.e. where the top of the cladding meets the soffits. Thanks
Gary Dixon ok, so we used to cut each piece individually with a degree angle on the top, measured to length........ then I thought, wtf, cut them square, over sized, 20mm bead to the top to cover small gap, multi tool bottom level, looks 100% 👌
@@thegardenroomguru thanks, makes sense. Top man.👍
Hi mate,
Would it please be possible to have plans for a 3m square shed roof?
Great channel,
Regards
John.
great watch pal
Hi Liam, excellent work. Do you plumb cut the ends or just leave them to go with the pitch of the roof? Thanks
Brilliant videos, can't get enough of them. Are your side walls the same height as back wall? Or are they rake walls? Thanks
Useful and clear
Great videos will , Am I right in saying if I stand off 2m from the boundary I can have a vaulted ceiling with a total max height of 4m.???? wanting to do maximum permitted size of 5m x 6m thanks bud.
Great video! Have you built the front frame higher to start or achieved the extra 75mm with just the running timber added on top?
Great video, do you use treated timber for you roof
Brilliant video, I’ve learnt a few things from this flat roof series, what size nails are you using for the frame? I noted you said 63mm for the osb to frame but I take it it’s like 90mm for the frame ones?
Nice video like it
Great job!! Ever done one with a skylight? Is it worth the effort??
Liam, Great Videos, does the 300mm overhang include the cladding or is it 300mm from the OSB to the front of the facing board, what length is your spacer?
Great video! Explain everything really clearly and easy to understand. One thing I don't quite get though is where the first ceiling joist goes in relation to the wall. Does it run directly on top or are you bringing it in a bit? If so, by how much? Cheers
Bit hard to explain with our an image, but your side wall internally is flush with the outside of the 1st joist, so if you looked up from inside you would see the full underside of the joist, if that makes sense
Hi Liam you said this was a 3x5m and that you ordered 3.6 m for roof instead of 4.2 I thought with a 300mm overhang either side 3.6 would be perfect am I missing something? I’m building to the same dimensions and had planned on 3.6 for roof now I’m unsure Thanks great videos and excellent workmanship
I am so tempted to start a project like that but unfortunately, I know my limits. Keep making such videos and one day I will. Just wondering when you say 25 mls ( is that 2.5 cm for every meter?). I don't know if I can change my garage roof like that. Brilliant work Mate.
Mate, I’m not here to sell to you, join the Facebook group, home builders building brilliant builds, get the base right, the rest is 🕺🕺
If I wanted to build a shed that was 13ft x 14ft (so very nearly a large square) and have an attic in it, what size thickness wood lengths would you use to guarantee structural integrity across that much of an expanse? I mean the lengths that the attic floor would be on? Thanks
How do you do a roof where you have limited space at the back and want no soffits ? Is is possible. Great vids.. Very useful
Hello nice video I am planning to build a 8 by 8 did you use 2 by 4 on the roof and joe long are they thx
I'm planning to build my own shed and make it a sauna. Insulated with rockwool, double cladding (inside & outside) with air vent in the bottom. Would you put air vent for the roof as well or close (seal) the rockwool between the joists completely?
Fab and informative video, thx. Two questions, 1) if your roof joists were long enough, would you have used upside-down hangers at the rear as well as the front? 2) Would liked to have seen how you add the noggins... Obviously nailed from the side right?
only use the joist hangers because I can't get a decent fix over the steel, if I can I spike the timbers into th wall head plate, ill do a fuller video on the next, had a bit of a mare, with the timbers being too short and being on my own
@@thegardenroomguru your fix was really interesting. I learned a great from it. You're a real craftsman.
How do you get the noggins all in a straight line? I've only seen them slightly off from one another so that you can screw into both sides of the joists and noggins
Hi mate just a quick question been trying to find a video lie this for ages to finish my garage roof.
Is single block with pillars what size wood should I get for the wall plate I want corogated roof but only on a tiny angle hope you reply awesome work by the way
thanks for another great video. where your roof joists meet the front and back wall (particularly where you dont have the brackets), do you not need to account for the angle that the joist sits on them with the use of a packer or by cutting out birds mouth notches?
no mate, pitch is shallow, there practically flat on front wall, ill do a better video, thanks for input, sometimes I just think people can see what I see, but ill do some more detail videos to show this detail for you
Fantastic, thanks
Thank you for your advise.
I need to build a shed adyacente to my house.
Please how to install tha beams fix to the wall how to seat the roof supports to install he first beam.
There will be an inclination of 75cm.
Thank you
Why do you use deep roof beams rather than just a normal 2x4 size? These videos are mint!
Such good videos, thanks. What steel do you use? 3mm Rectangle box? 50mm x 125mm? And why do you use that rather than Sister'd wooden joists? Less flex presumably for the doors to fix against?
160mm x 80mm x 5mm, Id use two 5x2's but I like the fact Im the only one using a steel and I know it'll never flex
Top video, nice and clear advice!
I'm planning a similar size workshop for my Mrs although in block. Just wondering, do I need to level the ends of the rafters where the facias go, or is a 25mm per meter drop so slight it won't show? Cheers.
You won’t see it mate
@@thegardenroomguru thanks, less maths to do, hooray!
@nostalgicplastic4323 😂a few have asked this before on my Facebook group mate, it’s like 2 or 3 degrees, never notice it 👌
Hi would single 7x2 work on a span of 4 meters. Enjoying your videos great work
Did you find the answer to this, as I have a 4 metre span to do also, thanks?
Check span tables. Ali dymock has them on his website and in his garden room videos.
Would you put anything on the roof before torch on felt
You used joist hangers upside down over the steel, but just nails on the joists over timber wall? Is there another option there without a nail gun? Any other type of strap? Twist straps?
Did you say you have the plans for that roof im doing a similar workshop roof
Hi mate I'm building a shed at 3.3m x 2.2m do you think 3x2 will be strong enough for roof joists? Also u think it will be easier to build roof on ground then attach? Cheers
Beautifully over engineered; just how I like to do things 👍🏾
Can this be done on a brick build?? Having an indoor kennels built an trying to decide on the type roof to go for
Hi William. I'm building my first garden room using many of the techniques you've been so kind to show us. My roof span 4.2 meters across and I'm using 7x2 in the roof joists. Do you think that would suffice the span/distance (ignoring the height restriction for the moment) ? Thank you for all you share for us.
Yeah I’d be happy eith 7x2 over 4.2 at 400 centreS, no worries
Hi Liam, need help planning a 4-car carport, 6m x 12 metres, going to use C24 4x4 posts every 3m, 15 in all, right decision? 30mm drop per metre, front posts 2.9m, back sticks 2.72m. May use slats for the side to allow some wind through. 2 x 5 timbers enough?
Looking at your roof system which I like you don't cut a birds mouth notch out for roof joists is this the best /easiest way
Very helpful thanks for all the content, I'm just about to start my 5.2 x 3.2, would you still double up on the roof joists, as is just over the 3m span? Cheers.
id leave them single at that length mate
Cheers mate.
Yahoo, a UK vid. Full of the nitty gritty we need to know and see, where the roof is the star and not the wannabe TV presenter.
Do you ever use glass fibre for roof instead of rubber??
Can these be done as an extension to your home ?
How come you only put the upside down hangers on the bit over the steel? Would it be over kill to do it on the back as well?
Its nice work, only thing I'd of done different is done 3 noggings, one center then the center off those. You'll be supprised how much that with slag over the years with just the 2, it's a big roof.
Hi, I'm a keen diyer and have just made a 6x6m garden room with 8x2" rafters. I've only put in 2 rows of noggins in, do you think I should add another row in between these two. I've used 18 mm osb for the roof decking and covered with grp fibreglass.
If it’s 6mtrs x 6mtrs you definitely want another 2 rows I’d say 👌
@@vjd8574 generally every 1m you should really have a nogging because it's such a large span. Takes abit more time but doesn't cost much more. Better safe than sorry. Last thing you want is in 5/10years time water pooling because the roof dipped.
brilliant job how do you get the noggins in a straight row im doing something similar i have done one before but used hangers for the noggins I don't want to stagger them 😊
chalk line mate, or fire a straight edge up and mark all the roof timbers
ok thanks mate I must of been drunk I ment to say I done this with decking used joist hangers to get them all in a row you don't have them did you drill in from the sides because you can't nail or screw from behind each one 🤔🤔
