  • In this video Installing an EPDM Rubber Roof (Part 1: Vapour Barrier), Tony first explains the multiple falls on a flat roof and then hands over to Will who takes you through the first part of the process on how to install EPDM rubber roofing. The system used here first has a coat of FG35 Primer applied before Will shows you how to apply the Alutrix vapour barrier membrane. He explains in detail how to fit the external corner, internal corner and upstand material which concludes this episode.
PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on our work schedules.

No doubt that this demo video shows us the right way to install a flat roof, the explanation of every step and work practice is very clear, good materials are used.
I'm going to install a new roof DIY, and want to use good materials, I already decided on using Alutrix or a similar self adhesive vapour barrier, as these provide the highest barrier properties, and are easier to install in a neat way than the plastic film based barriers which you have to staple (holes!) or glue down, also the foam adhesive for the insulation will stick better to this.
In this video some good advise was given how to install this barrier correctly, so thanks for that.

All 3 of these epdm videos are great, especially for someone like me who is planning to do their own! I do have a few questions though. Our rooflight (vario by velux) comes with a vapour barrier attached, that drops down into the hole, what is the best way to seal this to the alutrix and do you take the alutrix up and over the top of the upstand? Secondly how did you get away with 120mm of insulation our BC is wanting 150 :-( I was also just going to drop our ready made upstand onto the top of the warm roof, but I see the advantage of building one underneath first now.

The most amazing vapour control layer I've ever seen.😜 As this VCL is below the insulation, is it to control internal moisture vapour migrating into the insulation, or do you install a 2nd VCL/AVCL to the underside of the joists/light well before its plasterboarded?, or is this a secondary layer in case of water ingress, and if so, does it have a weep point out of the roof?, or does it do both?. Sorry for all the questions, but these kind of flat roof systems are really interesting. 👍 Thanks for the video.

Hi Del this product I personally think it’s the best I’ve copied some info you will never go back,
ALUTRIX® 600 and ALUTRIX® FR are self-adhesive vapour barrier membranes designed for use in a wide range of construction applications. The membranes are suitable for use beneath mechanically fixed single-ply roofing membranes, self-adhesive membranes, felt, asphalt, liquid waterproofing systems, profiled metal sheeting and standing seam systems. ALUTRIX® is also ideal for internal projects subject to very high humidity such as breweries, swimming pools, sports halls, kitchens and bathrooms.
ALUTRIX® vapour barriers can be walked on and are puncture-resistant, with a high tensile strength, which makes them ideal for profile steel sheets.
These highly effective vapour barriers consist of a reinforced aluminium composite that’s self-adhesive on the reverse and protected by a detachable film. Because ALUTRIX® membranes are self-adhesive, they are incredibly quick and easy to install, and are compatible with most materials.
In addition to the vapour barrier function (sd value > 1,500), ALUTRIX® membranes also form an air-tight layer in line with Energy Saving Regulations
      All the best Tony 👍

Hi. I have a question but doesn’t regard roofs. But struggling to find an answer. I live in a 1930’s semi. Has a cavity in the brick work. Wasn’t originally insulated but now is. I have vent bricks on the outside of the house (1 for each room). The vent brick blows into the room and makes the house drafty and the insulation in the cavity is exposed to moisture. Should those vent bricks now be sealed up or replaced for normal bricks since the house is now insulated?

@@designstudio8013 so what I’ve been told is the insulation now draws in moisture through the vents from the air outside. The vents were apparently originally there to allow the cavity to breath and to release any potential gases that might be in the rooms from the fire places (gas or coal). So now them fires are gone the vents inside aren’t needed and the vent one the outside needs to be sealed because the house is now insulated.
Modern houses don’t have these vents like my house has. They have weep holes that are really low down.

Its a shame roofers like this are few and far between! its the little details that count when it comes to wind and water!and Its shocking, that the sometimes people with money grumble about paying for a good roof over there head but are quite happy to pay thousands for a bathroom designer.

Brilliant video - but Alutrix is not breathable, nor are any other good vapour barriers - if they were you'd get condensation within the roof

Cant beat Alutrix or the attention to detail the roofer has done . But in real life terms its a vapour control layer. You would easily get the Alutrix down and insulation down in 1 day and sheet up. Until the outlet is cut out is still a paddling pool.

Hi G Wilko much appreciated great product and you are correct with out the gully it’s a paddling pool but we have to take into consideration we were filling and trying to capture everything all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

Is just me or have they over complicated the roof fall, just have it fall in one direction and then into one area out the gulley.

Way you write EPDA , this is not EPDM , YOU CAN'T welded EPDM MEMBRANE , ITS NEED TO WELD 900°C

  • @thetessellater9163

A vapour barrier and breather membrane are two different things, with different performance requirements. Much prefer GRP to EPDM for the top covering.

Hi the tessellater slip of the tongue my apologies Alutrix 600 is a Vapour Barrier and one of the best on the market, GRP great product more commercial it’s starting to become more main stream in the private side because more installers and not all people want EPDM it’s down to personal preference also the GRP companies wanted a bigger market share so they started doing free coarse all the best Tony 👍

    • @nickydavies4
      @nickydavies4 3 года назад

Grp is not even close to epdm epdm is a far better product the problem is is every man and his dog lay it and do a shit job also using water based glue which is crap also people who dont understand the requirements over 100 square meters then u get the people who will put a cut in epdm then put formflash straight over it and wounder why it fails laid correctly it's the best on the market by a mile
