A lot of people on their first watch miss that Zim was Rico's drill instructor. He was told the only way he'd see combat is if he busted himself down to private. So that's what he did, and ended up being the one who captured the brain bug.

The second Paul Verhoeven film that Movie Munchies reacts to. Consider another Verhoeven film called "Total Recal" (1990), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. An action and science fiction classic.
I'll put my vote in for that. I'd also suggest The Running Man for another Arnie movie.

The point in the book was that the author felt that people in government with the power to send troops to war should be required to have previously served in the military. If the government was made up of people who had served, they would know what it felt like to serve. Many countries in the world require a minimal service (typically of two years) so that all citizens participate equally in the defense of the nation. Claims by critics that the film was fascist were stupid - the film clearly stated that people could become citizens earned by military service, or to not become citizens. During WWII, neither Nazi Germany nor Italy provided the option to not support the military or the government. In fact, as Germany marched into other countries, the Nazi regime often forced people in the invaded countries two choices: serve in the Nazi military, or be sent to the death camps with their families. Also note that although the movie was released in 1997, the book was published in 1959. The book reflects a fear of Soviet communism than anything.
All countries in WW2 forced their populations to support the gov and military. The West had descended fully by this point into unchristian total war. But I agree, the critics are usually bug pilled Marxists.

The way half of the body sails towards us when the insects throw them through the air is mesmerizing.
I have said it before, these young ladies make watching a movie so much more enjoyable. Their comments during the movie are just to cool, like during the shower scene they pretend to hide their eyes. This is a fun movie that some don't like because it is wild and bloody. These ladies are always dressed so beautifully, it makes you wonder what they look like in normal street clothes.

I remember a different ending where it was revealed that the bugs were just going about their lives until the humans came to colonise their planets and attacked the bugs first. The bugs were just defending themselves (same story in Avatar and Outlander). So the people calling the shots for human colonising expansion were the bad guys, and they made the rest of humanity think that the bugs were the enemy who struck first. They used propaganda on TV to do it, that's why there's so many ads in the movie because we the auidence are being manipulated just like the characters in the film. Their grey and black uniforms in higher rank are near copies of Nazi uniforms on purpose. 'Starship Troopers' is actually 'Nazis in Space' and the lead characters are impressionable young people who've been lied to. My grandfather as a teenager finishing high school was excited for WWII just like these characters were because it was marketed as adventure. The director Paul Verhoven was a young boy in The Netherlands during Nazi Occupation and witness a lot of senseless murder by Nazi soldiers, blood and bodies in the streets. He witnessed how propaganda can convince self identifying 'good people', to do horrible things. His movies Starship Troopers, Robo Cop and Total Recal, all feature the media telling lies and shifting public opinion. They're all a master class in populace manipulation through propaganda. Total Recall is an amazingly inventive movie worth watching too. The original from 1990 directed by Verhoven.

Ironside's role was inspired in part by D. Daley, on of the few to get the Medal of Honor twice and the reason the law was changed to bar repeat awards when he was put up for a third. The Fat Electrician does a good one on him. Fought the Boxer rebellion through WWI.

While I love this movie my issue with it is that Paul Verhoven did not actually read the book Starship Troopers. He got a few pages into it and deemed it fascist propaganda, which if you read the novel it really isn't. The best way I can describe Heinlein's Novel of Starship Troopers is conservative star trek. Humanity has progressed to a point where the basic needs of their own species are met, with a heavy stratocratic government favoring those who have served to make the big decisions with military and colony needs. But on earth itself there are equal rights between all minorities, freedom of speech, and even if you want to join the military to become a citizen there are plenty of differing departments that are not front line fighting areas as well the government in the novel gives anyone who signs up the ability to back out before joining in an official capacity. Hell one of the things they do for young men and women who try to recruit straight out of school is show people with battle damage from their time in service to weed out those who do not want to actively suffer for their government. Also the bugs in the book are actually intelligent compared to the film, they have a societal hive mind and actively enslave other alien races like the Skinnies who the humans do end up freeing and join forces with to fight the bugs.
This movie is fairly graphic but on the plus side for Chi: no snakes! 😁

This is a movie is not about being fascist. They really don't show any. Using a 'stick' to force someone to agree or comply, that's the origin of 'fascist'.

After this, definitely the best reaction duo on YT. So many people watch this movie and view the humans as the bad guys for some insane reason. Its peak demoralization, and you two are a breath of fresh air.
Even a lot of Americans do not understand that this movie is a satire of everything it promotes. But at least it's still entertaining even if the satire is not communicated.
i like it when Argentina, whose football sports of choice are 1) Soccer, 2) Rugby are suddenly playing Gridiron in the future. American scifi is always amusing about this. A sport no-one outside North America is interested in, suddenly in the future it has dethroned every other sport.
I reckon im in the minority here then, but even as i kid, i caught onto the satire.
I'd still join the Mobile Infantry though.
@@glenbe4026 I think the joke is that the Nazis ended up being white people in Argentina IRL, whereas in this universe, the fascist/authoritarian Federation took over Argentina.
That’s because it’s an utter failure as satire. Veerhoven is a leftist hack who didn’t bother to read the book and decided to use this as an excuse to vent his unresolved issues. He put a window dressing of fascism on in the form of the uniforms, but the writers actually DID read the book so, so there was no actual fascism displayed… except from the Arachnids.
The book describes a world/society where people do not automatically gain citizenship at birth, whether due to where they are born (soil) or the citizenship status of their parents (blood). Citizenship, and thus the ability to vote and determine law, can only come from having *completed* at least 2 years of military service, which is voluntary. The characters discuss the merits of this in their high school government class, and the story seems to imply this type of rule by military veterans is both a superior form of a government and possibly necessary to survive major conflicts, such as an existential one against a hostile space enemy with superior forces like the bugs.
The movie seems to satirize this by accentuating some of the absurdities as well as the military uniforms which look very reminiscent of Nazi uniforms, hence the criticism of fascism.
(Apparently, Heinlein believed in something like this, and later generalized the acquisition of citizenship to any civil service-teaching, law enforcement, other governmental jobs-but only after completing said service, so current military still cannot vote until they leave. The idea is that such individuals demonstrate putting society's needs above their own. Johnny states to his teacher his understanding that this is supposed to be the reason. His teacher asks if he actually believes it and Johnny replies he doesn't know. Presumably he has accepted it and become a bleiever by the end of the story.)
This movie had noticeable imagery and feel of the hit video game of the 90s "Quake 2", of which i was a Huge fan ! Loved the movie!!

There is more of this universe but is animated and not the same, this movie is very satiric and helps a bit with horror and violent aspect, it stands the test of time.
