Incase you missed the end credit scene. Constantines apprentice that died, John went to his grave and saw that the apprentice had become an angel.

Gabriel was an archangel who went insane! Gabriel became convinced that bringing Satan's Son to Earth would settle the war between Heaven and Hell. The war would inspire truly good people to prove themselves to God, with the bad people going to eternal damnation.
Tilda Swinton was outstanding as Gabriel. She was perfect for the role.

Which is pretty much the way people think the whole Revelations battle will play out. To them it's a GOOD thing. A glorious battle where the forces of heaven will purge the world of the taint of sin and the devil forever. No more eternal war, but a final resolution, with them as the victor. So yeah, Gabriel trying to bring that around so that the chosen of god could then ascend is entirely fitting with the christian mindset in regards to this. Namely that it's fucking insane, and barbaric, but that's how they are, so it tracks.

The Devil's Advocate is a must .. however there's a few movies that's very similar to these movies: the movie Priest starring Jude Law and the movie Fallen with Denzel Washington and Elias Kotas
the plot is about Lucifer's son trying to take over earth and his father's position. Gabriel likes the idea because she/he thinks humanity needs to be tested to be worthy of God's love and so wanted to unleash the son. Constantine knew that Lucifer would not like it and so tries to die because he knew Lucifer would come. He then tells Lucifer what the plan is and Lucifer does not like his son's plot so he sends him back to hell. Gabriel was doing a bad thing, so she/he no longer has God's blessing and Lucifer burns off her/his wings.
I’m so glad you did the post discussion long enough to see that Chas became an angel. You literally said you refused to accept it when Gabriel killed him. Clearly his sacrifice was not in vain. Wonderful reaction ladies! As always.

I absolutely LOVE the irony of John's deal with the devil, something known to damn your soul to hell, making him worthy of heaven. Just beautiful.
The reason Gabriel was there was because in order for the son of Lucifer to come to our world, the hand of God had to have a hand in it so to speak. So Gabriel works for God, and she was the one that was going to let him loose onto the world with the spear of destiny. and as you can tell, Lucifer did not like that one bit at all. 😂

And his name is Keanu Reeves. You saw him in the movie, John Wick, where the bad guy stole his car and killed his puppy that his dead wife gave to him. I think he’s one of the best actors ever he must be to have three matrix movies and four John wicks, among a ton of other movies
This is definitely a movie where it's very helpful to have some baseline understanding of Christianity/ Catholicism in order to fully grasp the film's religious subtext. Wasn't sure how familiar you guys were with those topics. But based on whatever knowledge you do have, you certainly did a great job following along 👏💯 Nice work!

The reason Gabriel is not the version of the angel that you normally see is that because in their world Gabriel is a half breed. Half angel and half human. This is why he is allowed to be on Earth. Demons in Hell, angels in Heaven. Balthazar is half demon half human. Lucifer (Lu) is full angel who left Heaven, which is why he is all in white, but is corrupted with the tar on his feet an the veins and generally evil looking.
Strange, I can't see any comments about this film being based on a DC comic series called Hellblazer....

Fun fact, my best friend growing up was the daughter of one of the producers of this movie, and I remember her telling me that they had planned to do a sequel, complete with a badass gun-toting Jesus, but it ended up falling through and never being made.
There's an after credit scene, important if you like Chas (boy), great you got it. Lot of rectors miss it. Gabriel is human now.
Movie munchies that spear is called the spear of destiny ,in the bible it was the spear that a roman soldier shoved in to Jesus's body when he was being crucified on the cross , it is considered a biblical artifact and the legend behind it is who ever carries it will be invincible in battle ,just like how in real life world war 2 nazis were looking for the ark (raiders of the lost ark that you watched ) hitler was also looking for that spear in world war 2
The Ark legend is that whatever nation holds it will win it's wars.
Which makes sense because I also hear it was captured by the Roman Empire, then the Ottoman Turks, who then had it captured by the British, who had it stored in the American colonies for safe keeping which became the United States of America, who then gave it back to Israel after WW2. Funny coincidence that's how global power drifted too.

This film is based on a graphic novel, and is one of my all time top 3 favorite graphic novel movie adaptations, along with "Sin City" and "V for Vendetta". They brought the character back in DCs "Legends of Tomorrow" TV series, currently streaming on Netflix.

Catholic vs Christian .... Catholicism is a subset of Christianity. The Christian church has many sub groups, of which the main 2 we talk about in Western Culture are Catholics and Protestants, and these can also been broken down into smaller subgroups.
The spear is supposed to be the one that pierced Jesus Christ on the cross during his crucifixion. Known as The Holy Lance or The Spear of Destiny. Because it pierced Jesus his blood got onto the blade. It is sort of ancient folklore that any army in possession of the spear would win every battle (that's why that guy is stronger and faster with the spear).
What he had was the spear of destiny, it’s the tip of the spear that was supposedly stabbed into Jesus while he was on the cross

You stopped the movie too soon. After the credits, they show the kid who died - he became an Angel. Go check it.
The director was Jewish so he wasn’t that familiar with a lot of these Christian concepts and myths so he made his own interpretation. For example, Jewish people don’t believe in Hell- so when he imagined hell he thought about it in a unique way.
"There are cars in Hell" gave me the biggest laugh I've had all week ; ).

He is a halfbreed, so he doesn't die. That was the reason he was not allowed in Midnite's bar (which is neutral, and Chad isn't neutral), the reason why Constantine treated him like crap, and why he was able to create holy water despite not being an ordained priest.

You guys will probably enjoy "Speed" also starring Keanu Reeves. I promise it won't be as confusing as The Matrix or Constantine, it's one of the best action movies of the 90's.

The guy in Mexico had one job, to deliver the spear to the hospital, he was possessed as soon as he touched the spear and from that moment on all his does is in furtherence to deliver the spear. The stories are tied because Gabriels needs the spear to finally unleash Mammon.
When Constatine uses the chair he is viewing the Mexican's moves and understanding what he is doing, you can see from the begining the Mexiacan is always looking back, he was aware someone was watching him. That was John. Finially he caught John and Papa Midnight had to rescue him
Why were the soldier demons trying to manifest?, like through the little girl....to help Mammon's plan come true. Remember Balthazar said he had only one job, to bring the pyschic, Angela, to Mammon and the other demons carried her away to the pool, the same way they would have the first time she met John, only then John prevented that
Afterr delivering the spear and drowning Angela so that Mammon can possess her, the demon's job was finished so the host just dies in the pool
Gabriel is the one who killed Chaz, upset with him spoiling her/his plans despite being a nobody according to Gabriel
Him comanding thee into the light was to force Gabriel to be revealed visibly
How did John come back the first time?, he was revived in the ambulance, dead for two minutes
Isabel did not want to be the doorway for Mammon, she knew what was comming, suicide, that was her drastic solution to prevent that
Bman and Hennessy were people he peddled with, Bman was his supplier of relics and Hennesy found him interesting cases, they both knew John was a liability to them but still associated with him because John was so much better at the job than them. Both Bman and Hennessy reference this

There is a movie called legion with Paul betany that is similar to this, its action horror with a religious twist. It will be about as jumpy as this for you, but it was a fun watch if you enjoyed this

It’s never stated in the movie, but the red car at the beginning I assumed was Mammon possessing the man on the physical plane, since Mammon could not cross over. Either that or Gabriel literally just yeated the car at the poor guy, seeing as there was no driver..
