    The original kit was maybe the first model I ever saw. The older kid next door had one built, I was fascinated!
    It led to my pestering dad to by me my 1st kit which due to selection was the Aurora Spitfire...🤗

    Boyd - videos like this are awesome. We get to witness what happens during a decal lay multiple times and listen to your thoughts as you do and evaluate process. There's alot more I'd like to praise about this segment - but all of it is BRAVO! There is so much angst about decalling - you provide a steady guide through the process. Cheers!

    Always one of my favorite SF ships. The Aurora 1975 kit had a pull-out reactor but no interior at 1/144th scale. A 1/72 interior will be amazing, definitely worth lighting, even if it will have to be almost 30 inches long.

      It would probably be bigger/longer than the 1/72 scale Monogram/Revell space shuttle.

    One video build! A real change of pace. That's a hell of a kit-- all the modern reference available guarantees the greatest fidelity to the shooting "miniature." Placing a lot of the surface detail on a decal is pretty clever. The real thing, with metals and textured stampings that were painted over for panels are a real bear to figure out. One of the most interesting "factoids" about the design by Lange and Ordway, who I am sure most of us know were engineering consultants for NASA, was that the passenger compartment came very close to the dimensions of the actual payload bay of the space shuttle. At the time in development-- but the boys knew all about it! The overall shape, the twin APU engines, the lifting body concept-- don't know what those crazy cup shapes really were-- and they extrapolated a "super material" for the hull to resist re-entry heat. Well, we know the tiles were what we eventually went with.
    Very pleasing glam shots!

    I have the Airfix version in 1/144 scale. It came with the Pan Am logo. But I bought mine at a hobby shop about 22 years ago, so it must have been before it became an issue. Love the work you do. This will help me finish it! Thanks!!!!

    I remember the old Aurora kit of the Space Clipper, Think I had it twice as a kid. And now I hear Moebius is doing a 1/72 scale version.. Looking forward to the big 1/48 scale Aries 1B to. I'm Thinking of somehow making a table lamp base out of that one to go on my night stand. The idea is that I pull the chain once and the model lights come on and act as a night light. Pull the chain a second time and the actual lamp part would come on.. Ya I know sounds kinds dump, But I think it would be cool. Especially if I can get some sort of lamp shade with the 2001 movie logo on it., Maybe even have a lighted Space Clipper model mounted above the shade to enhance the night light effect

    Nice build, Boyd. I purchased a model of this ship in 1968, just around the time the movie came out; don't know if this kit is a re-pop or new tooling. Built it to add to a poster announcing a class-wide field trip to see the movie when it was released. Great to see the ship!

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад +2

      I think this kit has a few changes from the original. I hope that Moebius does release the bigger model in 1/72 scale. If so I'll go all out on that one. I saw the movie on the big screen in '78 when it had it's 10 year anniversary. Until Star Wars, it was the gold standard for special effects. The models were all fantastic.

    • @farfoe5106
      @farfoe5106 2 года назад +1

      @@TrekWorks Ahh, yes. But did you see it in wide screen Cinerama?! Now, that was the way to see THAT movie! 😉
      The movie wowed everyone, even though we didn't understand it... sets and models were ground breaking, but very clean and sterile. That was one of the great things about Star Wars: it looked lived in. When I saw the scene of Jawas loading R2D2 into the transport with all of the grease and muck everywhere, 2001 became a distant memory!
      Have enjoyed your work for many years, now; especially the Enterprise stuff. Thanks for sharing!

    When matching paint to a photo, I always go by the most neutral/medium shade of color in the photo, not the brightest and not the darkest, try to find the medium, because in a photo, there is sun/moon reflection on the top and shadows on the sides and bottoms. I do this paint matching for cars, sci-fi, choppers and jets and my custom made electric guitars.

    Nice build. I've never had much luck with spraying craft paint. I have tried Apple Barrel with not much luck. What is your process in thinning craft paint?

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  2 года назад

      I thin it with regular tap water and I run it through a fine paint strainer before it goes into my airbrush. Doing that stops it from clogging when spraying. Some brands are better than others with Delta Ceramcoat being the best and Anitas and Folk Art are pretty good. Apple Barrel is at the bottom and I only ever used it once to find that out.

  • @AvengerII

    Looks very nice as-is.
    I really don't think it needs anything special unless you were going to shoot a movie with it.
    It looks nice!
    Shame about Pan Am, though. That company was such a trendsetter in aviation. They were the first buy 747s, and before that, they had Clipper flying boats which really set them apart. They would have bought SST's had those been practical and economical but they went with the jumbo jet and that was the right choice in the long run.
    Sad they didn't last far past the 1980s.

    • @TrekWorks

      @@TrekWorks Yes, he was.

    The only real negative with this kit is the decals. They are so thick, that they do not like curves. I had a hell of a time getting them to lay down on the top of the fuselage. They’re almost like a cellophane. Even so, they can be fragile.
    They also do not respond well to micromark decal solvent and setting solution.
