Thanks for the feedback. I'll add a paint list as you suggest in future videos. Dan
Hi could you link the different paints you used in the bio please
Great job, came out real nice, thanx for sharing.
G'day midnight and thanks for the compliment. Just subscribed to your channel too. Nice job on that Lindberg UFO kit. I kept meaning to pick up one of those kits. Dan
@DansModelBench Thank you Dan, subbed you back. Lindberg UFO was the first kit I built, when I came back to the hobby.
Thank you for a fantastic video..
Is there another clear lacquer you could recommend?
I couldn't find alclad 2 aqua in a clear gloss coat only in colour tints.
Thanks in advance.
G'day mate. Just to make sure we are talking the same product, the one I used is Alclad ALC-600 Aqua Gloss Clear, which is an acrylic clear. I avoided a lacquer clear as I wasn't sure what they would do to the decals on the lense. I've had trouble with this models brands decals in the past as they can be fragile, so didnt want to use anything hot. Here is a store that has the Aqua Gloss product, so you know what the packaging looks like:

If you cant get that where you are, AK-Interactive make something similar that they call Intermediate Gauzy Agent Shine Enhancer. Yeah I'm not making that up. :)

Another possibility is VMS Varnish HD in gloss finish. Make sure you order gloss as they also have a satin and matte.

Hope that helps and thanks for the kinds words.

Dan
Hi, did you use 146
B526 Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black?
G'day Paul. I used that product, but not the spray can version. I used an airbrush, so I started with SF288 and thinned it with Mr Color Levelling thinner. With a kit this scale, I cant see why the spray can wouldn't give you a similar result, if thats more convenient for you.
Great job Dan! Looks amazing. How much for you to build & paint one of these for me? I want one but don't want to buy all the supplies to only build one model kit. Serious inquiry so let me know!
G'day Brad. Thanks for the kind words. I've popped you an email response to your enquiry, to the contact address on your RUclips channel. Dan
Why did you choose the grill to be silver when the Adam Savage/Peter Jackson prop grill is black? Curious
Great question. I think there were a number of props used in the film and I'm not sure they were all the same or at least lit the same. The one I was using as my guide was from a still of the HAL 9000 in the main workstation they had. I went with a darker metal colour, that best matched what I could see in the movie still. Of course that colour is influenced by the film processing, lighting etc. It could well be with the bright studio lights and the colour processing of the film, that what we saw on film was a darker grey and not the original prop colour. I've lost count of how many props look totally different in real life in everyday lighting or on video tape (remember that) compared to flim and studio lighting and post processing. Just about anything Star Trek comes to mind from the original movies or the later tv series like TNG, Voyager etc Some of the Star Trek ships look absolutely toy like with their very bright saturated colours, as they have clearly been painted that way to allow for the post processing that was done with them on film or video. Interestingly most kits go with studio accurate colours, which to my eyes, looks very little like what we actually saw on screen in most cases, with a lot of those colours either disappearing or being considerably more mute. Anyway, I made a creative decision to go with what it looks like to my eyes in that scene and not neccessarly how it might look if you were standing next to the prop in normal lighting. I basically do that with anything sci-fi related. There was the added bonus that the darker grey also showed the detail on the grill better. :)
Great response. You made the right choice!
really don't understand why a backplate wasn't included
Its a very strange omission for sure.
Hi Dan nice to hear from you again and what an unusual model. I saw this movie in Cinerma when it was first released and I thought Hal to be a most chilling character? After all he/it was a murderer. Anyway hope you're keeping well and may I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New year. Best wishes Vic
G'day Vic. Always nice to hear from you and yes, he was certainly not a good character in the movie. I work in I.T. and to me HAL is what you get when you mix pure science and human endeavor with corporate profits and thinking. Always appreciated your support and comradery over the years. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too mate. Dan
That’s crying out to be converted into the front of a PC case
HAL 9000 Model Build < Add a mainebord and working computer system.
Add login and startup and Shut Down with voice control and commands By computer
Fore that true HAL 9000 experience.
Daisy daisy give me your answer do.
HAL 9000 Closer then you think Alan Turing lives on.
It would certainly be a project that could lend itself to a arduino or raspberry pi.
More full sized and more them one os Like Solaris 11.3 and Linux ubuntu or red hat or a nice Ds 5054 os.
@@DansModelBench Last one was for a nice small Mainframe that's only 2 story tall
