    Thanks Dan- I’m building this now- I’ve found all 3 of your videos very helpful and candid- as well as humorous as we’re probably the same age- gave me thoughts & ideas as well- I’m building right from the box- going a 1944 dunkelgreb base as opposed to the earlier Gray-will be my first winter camouflage as well. Cheers and Thank You- JW, Detroit, MI. USA

    A great build - thanks for sharing. I remember seeing this kit in my local hobby shop when I was a kid and being wowed by how big and complex it looked compared to the stuff I could afford. Now I've just ordered one and the Eduard PE after seeing your video :)

      You and me both. The Tamiya stuff back in my childhood was the top shelf stuff. I only got kits like Tamiya a few times when my dad got me one for a birthday or something like that. Otherwise it was the small 1:72 Matchbox and Aifix kits with my pocket money. :) I really hope you enjoy your build of this kit after all these years. Its an older kit, but I had a lot of fun building it and when I think about it, this was my first big build with photoetch too. Just subbed your channel and man, you are a great modeler. Really enjoying the videos on there. Please video your build of this kit if you can. I would love to see what you make of it. :) Thanks for visiting the channel. Dan

    Hi Dan! I greatly enjoyed this series, and I recently bought this very kit at my local hobby shop. I am looking forward to building it, and your experience with the kit, and detailed build description, will help me a lot I am sure. I have subscribed to your channel, so I look forward to more content.
    Cheers from NSW!

      G'day Gary. Its a old kit, but I did really enjoy building it. I hope you have the same experience. Tamiya were so far ahead of the pack when this kit was released, so it still goes together so nicely. Good luck with it and how about posting something about your progress!

    Iv just bought the flak 38 yesterday what a bit of kit wanted it for ages but got the 251 half track first I never seen this kit before it must be one of the coolest kits to go with that flak you've done an amazing job looks great mines got alot PE and a trailer so I'm gonna hook it up to the 251 half track, this is my 4 build getting back into the hobby after bout ten or so years but used to just be cars now I'm loving the ww1 ww2 kits the detailing and learning the history on you tube as your getting the rite colours and watching what our boys went through so proud iv done the British trenches with the nazis attacking got the sherman from fury done the telco 80 torpedo boat but iv never done figures and iv got about 20 with the 3 kits and all accessories omg lol but way create my very first diarama after I build this flak 38 but now I'm wanting this kit aswell so gonna get my hobby shop to order it iv got a kit to pick up with an indian motor bike but hes closed over weekend way down to Surrey to a model show so hes been busy in the shop hes an amazing builder

      Well mate I'm no expert in figures as the video shows, but I think they really help tell the story in this case. Very glad I had a go at them as I've seen the same kit where modellers have left them off and it just doesn't look as interesting a subject to my eyes. I would really encourage you to have a go and put them on your model too. My kit didn't have any PE when I got it, but I purchased an aftermarket Eduard set and it did help add a lot of detail to the kit. I did find it a challenge as this was my first experience with that much photo etch, but I got some Tamiya PE bending pliers and that certainly helped. Later I also got a Flip R5 bending tool and that is great and not to expensive. You can get bigger bending tools, but its fine for the smaller parts you commonly find on tanks and trucks. Building military subjects like this sure is a whole different set of skills to doing civi cars and the like, but I can also appreciate that too. I find getting a nice smooth gloss finish on a car, really hard to do! Good luck with your builds and thanks for taking the time to reach out. Dan

    I have this one in my collection and I am, mixed excited and scared after watching your build. The production of these to tanks was something like three tanks could be built in the same time that one of these half tracks were built. Interesting to note that scale does not always lose complexity.

      Hi Dushane, Its a fun build and being Tamiya, everything fits as it should. I just made it harder by using the photoetch. ;)

    Great job Dan....You took that old war horse and made it look great, nice weathering and figures. A far cry from the newer renditions from Trumpeter and Dragon, but with nice painting they come out good. Love the strap across the cab, a detail often overlooked.
    Mine's on hold as I'm doing another kit right now but I would like to finish it as well.
    Thanks for posting your work.....Paul

      I have Trumpeter's 01527 kit, the 7/2 with the Flak 43..... I had the Tamiya one you have but got rid of it years ago. I also have the Dragon late type 7 personnel carrier. Both decent kits, but both have some issues as all kits do.

      Thanks shoe and I'm with you on the fun factor with this kit. Actually I always enjoy Tamiya AFV kits. Even the old ones like these go together so well and were ahead of their time in detail. I'm still amazed at how well Tamiya have kept the molds for these too. The parts still look sharp and fit well and they must have churned out hundreds of thousands of their more popular kits by now.

    Good model, good build, like the finish. As a model builder myself i don't get fussy like you did.,if something is out of place leave it keep continuing the build.at the end of the build and you get to the stage of painting you will find it will look great.so the next model you build dont hum and har or get the impression you bont like this or that just do it. Great work Dan. Interesting to see the progress unfold. You mentioned in reply to another comment that you need to track your models, what you have on hand. • @DansModelBench
      @DansModelBench  6 лет назад

      G'day Dave, Yes I know the online site you are talking about and its pretty good too. I've got quite a few paints and kits to record but it always bothers me a bit to use someone elses web site or cloud service for that, given I hope to have this going for some years.You just don't know what might happen to a cloud service in respect of terms of service, when your not paying for it and that bothers me a bit. Not saying there is anything dodgy about the site, just its not something I am completely comfortable with, other people are no doubt fine with it. While I am an I.T. teacher in my day job, in a past life I was a commercial developer, so my blessing and curse is I have the skills to write my own and thats what I have been doing. :)
      I've made a good start on it and it should be done before the end of the year and thats what I was referring to. It will be standalone, so I can install it on my Macs at home, although I've coded it to work on Windows too at some point. When its done I will give it away to the modelling community as donationware, which means throw some change if you like back to me to help offset my developer tool costs or just use it with my blessing.
      Dan

    It looks great mate. The only thing I would say is with the figures. The clothing they wear was designed to be worn inside out. One side was white, but the other side had a woodland camo pattern on it. So with these guys on this model wearing the winter white side. The inside of the hoods would have had the woodland camo pattern on them. But apart from that, they still look great. I am crap at painting figures too. You have done a good job. I just got this kit for my birthday. Looking forward to building it.

    It's a venerable old kit (would you believe it was introduced in 1975?) and holds up well with Tamiya's other offerings. I've wanted to build this kit for years, but now with the availability of kits of the SWS version I'm terribly conflicted. Love all those accessories, though! Thanks for posting!

    • @WorksOnMyComputer
      @WorksOnMyComputer 4 года назад

      Thanks Etherdave. I have no doubt the newer kit has some better features, but if fun factor is important to you, I can say this kit gets a high score and it sells for very little too. For me the weaknesses in the kit out of the box is the gun barrels and the mesh on the back of the platform. If you can live with whats in the box its a great value for money kit. Dan

    What colour is your figures done in? Iv got the dark grey blue uniform that was on the box but I do like yours

    • @DansModelBench
      @DansModelBench  4 года назад

      They are Luftwaffe personnel wearing winter reversible smocks and snow boots. The boots fitted over the soldiers normal boots and gave them additional protection and kept their feet dry. Its been a while since I built the kit, but from memory I used Insignia white for the smocks and then used a grey wash to help give some depth. I also used Tamiya weathering sets with colours like soot and rust to add some dirt and wear to them. Because they were white, they could get quite stained. The figures all came with the kit, which was a nice bonus.

    When you sprayed on your chipping affects, you spray to close to the model vehicle hence that's why you now have a strange layer on your vehicle . You also sprayed to much on , it's only supposed to be in small quantities

    Excellent build Dan. I bought this kit a few months ago. Ordered and have received the Eduard P E set. Searched for possible gun barrels and a month ago I found your 3 part build. On one of them you gave out the contact details for the Voyager barrels. I checked their website and it doesn't give prices or any facility to order parts, so sent them am email explaining that I wanted to buy from them. They never replied. I have sent another email today, so will have to wait and see, as I can't find any other barrels for sale. Did you buy direct from them or was it through an agent?
    One more query. I think I saw you using 'G S Hypo Cement' to fix P E to the model. If so, does it give a strong bond and what is the "working time", as I find C A grabs too quickly at times, when trying to place tiny parts into position. PS. I hope you build the Dio and record it. Cheers ! Roger.

    • @DansModelBench
      @DansModelBench  3 года назад

      Hi Roger, I ordered the barrels from BNA Model World here in Australia. The GS Hypo Cement works terrific for clear parts and photoetch. It has a much longer drying time then CA glue. Usually it will be a minute or two until the parts start to set. That is great for positioning parts, but obviously has drawbacks if a part is being bent and you are hoping to hold it in place with the cement. For those situations the CA is still better. To work with it isn't much different then normal tube cement we used years ago. It can get a bit stringy after its been opened and is a few months old, but still bonds the parts fine. Dan

      @@DansModelBench Thanks for your reply Dan. After phoning around model shops in the UK, where I live and unable to get a response from Voyager, I thought the idea of metal barrels was history but thanks to you I've now ordered a set from BNA Model World, Australia. I would search the USA but their shipping costs/duties are crazy. Thanks also for the tips on using the GS Hypo Cement. - Still looking forward to the Dio ! Cheers, Roger.

    That's a fantastic result mate! I've just recently finished the Tamiya troop carrier version towing an 88mm. I enjoyed the half-track kit so much that I immediately started the Flak 37 with armoured cab. If your interested, you can check out the build here:
    www.scalemates.com/profiles/mate.php?id=18989&p=albums&album=40736#67
    I've have put off building the Flakvierling as I too want to do it in the winter camo scheme, but have not done the white wash before either, but after watching this I'm keen to have a go at it now.
    BTW, the screw on the bottom is to allow you to slip the rear axle forwards and backwards to loosen/tighten the slack on the tracks when installing them. Obviously it wont work if you glue the shafts that the metal axle slips through to the chassis though.

      Thanks mate. It's actually 2 kits. The re-released troop carrier kit which just contains an updated sprue containing the figures and the very old Flak 36/38 kit which was a little rough to be honest.
      I've nearly finished the Flak 37 with armoured cab now. Just need to finish weathering it a little. Fortunately no crew this time. ;)
      Yeah, I was very fond of the A4 and like many others was gutted to see them disbanded without being replaced. I have 2 1/48 scale Italeri kits which I eventually intend to build. One as an Aussie machine and the other as RNZAF without the hump. But ambition exceeds talent at present so may be a while yet. ;)
