It's crazy to think those pieces of production design were from 50 years ago, and they still look contemporary. Many people talk about how groundbreaking Star Wars was in terms of realistic detailed miniatures but for me 2001 is where it all began. As a side note, would LOVE to see a Ronald Moore 'Battlestar Galactica' model released with that level of insane detail!
Especially to paint it a shade of black that collects all nearby sources of light. Or even to produce geometric shapes across it's surface, now that would be cool!
After 2010 came out in theaters, I built a Discoveey model out of wood. My grandfather set up a lathe and made the sphere for the front. About four feet long. Painted the details using fine tip black markers. Wouldn't be good enough for close ups in a movie but I suspended it from the ceiling using mono filament. From ten feet away in a dark room. Lit only by a flashlight it was fun to look at. My friends who were fans of the movies and the Clarke books enjoyed it with me.
In 1972 I built a Discovery model from scratch, to use in my high school French project - telling the story of 2001 with a narrated slideshow. Mine wound up about a meter long with a paper-mache crew compartment and the backbone constructed from a balsa wood shaft with always inverting and decorated triangle segments build around it. Even though my recorded French narration was pretty much at the level of "See the space ship. See the space ship run. The space ship's name is Spot", I got an "A" for the project - the high point of my career with the French language. The Discovery model hung in my bedroom for many years, next to my Enterprise model and my life sized Silent Running robot (boy did that thing take up space!) - but sadly (or luckily?) my parents wouldn't let me paint the walls and ceiling of my bedroom flat black. I think that model is still kicking around my Mom's house somewhere to this day.
My uncle has been an SFX model maker for 40+ years and when I was a teen, I shop interned when he worked on "2010" (for Boss FX?) and I recall the challenge for him (them) was the lack of the original Discovery and they had to work solely from stills from the movie. Great to see the love for both movies lives on!
thefloatingrock Kubrick had the models and blueprints destroyed because he didn't want his designs showing up in other films. Somehow, the Aires 1B model escaped destruction.
One of them showed up in an early episode of Babylon 5, and when they did another episode resolving the mystery it set up a couple of years later, the 2010 suit wasn't available, and the prop and costume department had to make a replica.
thefloatingrock cool story. I am a big fan of 2010.. I still think they did a great job melding with the original. A challenge most would run away from quickly.
I'm actually really good friends with Adam Johnson. He is the expert on 2001, and a stickler for accuracy. This will be the most accurate model available....period!!!
In the Pit Droids video game, one of the obstacles in Watto’s scrapyard was the EVA pod. In Builder mode you could select the pod and show it in one of four positions. It was fairly well detailed for a background element. I guess the unseen aliens in 2001 sent the pod to a galaxy far, far away.
Please Tested, do a series where Adam and Norm build a full studio 1/1 model. I know it would be a really long series, but my god it would be an epic project!
Tested. Have a question: so the bigger one in this video out of plastic selling price is 400$? Where can i buy it from here in location Germany online?
I would like to an interior schematic. Where was the centrifuge located? I have heard that the centrifuge, as shown in the movie, was too large to have fit inside the command module. The size was also pragmatic in producing artificial gravity.
My "model" was a mobile I did for an art class in 1971. As I remember it had the Discovery, reinforced with a piece of coat hanger wire (forgive me, I was in 9th grade), poor Frank Poole floating in space, the Aries 1B, a Pan Am Space Clipper, possibly a Moon Bus and other artifacts from the movie. I would have killed for models like in this video. It's amazing the staying power of the movie 2001.
I always love the ship models from 2001 and still love the film itself. George Lucas has said he loved 2001 when he saw it in the theaters and was inspired to make his ships with lot s of details like them but gave his ships more dirt and grime to make it look more used but we all have 2001 to thank for giving us more realistic space ships which earlier sci-fi film ships were mostly all sleek and smooth flying saucers and rockets.
In the behind the scenes film for 2010 it was stated the original shooting model from 2001 was destroyed by order of Kubrick. Is this model based on the 2010 shooting model?
I'd have to say that's not 1/10th scale. To give you an idea, HO trains are 1/87th scale. I would say that discovery model is closer to HO or slightly larger. A 1/10th scale of the discovery would be roughly 40 foot long.
Man, that USS Discovery model kit would be great to have! Well, mostly the smaller one anyway. I doubt I'd have as much time and patience with the bigger one, as genuinely beautiful as that looks. Plus, there'd be space in my bedroom to consider. But, nevertheless, both of them seem like really great builds (same with the EVA Pod)! :)
0:20 Proposal: either say “twenty-eighteen” and “twenty-oh-one”, or “two thousand and eighteen” and “two thousand and one”. Don’t mix the two. Thoughts?
Atomic City's basketball size Aries 1b was amazing. And not easy to build. Worth the big bucks. Resin...you washed all the parts first. I took photos of everything, and pics during assembly. The legs needed to be supplemented by brass tubing, and that's where you could run into problems. (The legs were adjustable). The Discovery doesn't appeal to me as a kit. It's just an odd use of space. The front end would be worthy as a stand alone kit, if big enough.
Shouldn't that escape pod have some decals on it? Some kind of details? For one thing it's supposed to be a dull grey colour around the window. It looks like it's unfinished....
Interesting the cost of the larger model due to its size. Maybe someone could make a digital kit for sale that could be printed at home with a 3d printer.
Great video. I LOVE 2001: A Space Odyssey. It had a 50th Anniversary Screenings for 2001: A Space Odyssey back on May 18 but sadly I missed it as I never knew the date of it. Warner Bros. Pictures re-released the film in a 70mm version at select theaters nationwide back on May 18. I would have killed to see it it really would have been a pleasure to see it in 70mm in a dolby cinema theater.
krillen64 Saw a screening of the new master, unfortunately the last reel had no sound! Still incredible, though. If they show it again in your area, i highly recomend it!
krillen64 check your local movie theaters, they are replaying it in select places. End of August some theater are going to carry it in Imax in South Florida.
I had the pleasure of seeing 2001 during it's original release -at the CINERAMA wrap around screen in downtown Seattle. Still give me chills 50 years later.
What happened to Moebius Models by the way? Weren't they acquired by another company earlier this year? And I cannot find the store that I'm pretty certain was on their website not too long ago.
Thanks. Though I was looking for something more along the lines of current Moebius catalogue in one place. I was (and frankly still sort of am) thinking of appproaching Moebius about the possibility of shipping some of their BSG series models to Poland where I live and where only a few of them were released under Revell brand.
Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh (screams like a 10-year-old girl)!!!! I model kit for a Kubrick film!!!!!! A Sci-Fi kit that matches MEEEEE!!!! JOY!!!!!!!!!
I've never been able to concede that the spinning (living quarters) centrifuge, the access corridors, 3-pod bay, bridge and memory room ALL fit in this ball head of the Discovery! I know there are renderings that 'position' where everything is, but it's not a true fit. BTW: this model is too costly!!!
somehow someway i will have a model of this and the Starcar Gunstar and of course V.I,N.ecnt and the ship from the movie the black hole and have it lit proper thank you for the vid made my day now off to work "i owe i owe so off to work i go" lol
love this channel, but I find it astounding that they wouldn't have run their audio through a scrubber to take that distracting background chatter out of the video.
the only thing that really bugged me from the original move - and I saw it when it came out ... what the incredibly useless hands on the pods. that is the one thing they did not have the technology or money to do well. You can see them flopping around and you never really see them manipulating anything very well - although when they can just do rotation as in the manual opening of the airlock it looked cool.
if they didnt cost so much they would sell and make more money. they do short runs so they can more more for less. they store the dies for 10-20 yrs and gouge some more people. lol
Wow. The new Moebius site is absolutely horrible. Tiny rectangle of content on the screen. Just text menus for the actual models, instead of something more appealing like what they had just a few months ago. Also, couldn't find the pre-order referenced in the interview.
I love the Eva Pod since when I was a child but that's huge! I don't understand this "fixation" of some producers for huge kits! Expecially Moebius. Lots of their kits are huge and when you examine them you realize that there is no reason for such a big model for the level of details on the kit. Somtimes I think they to huge models just for get more money! Not for technical reason. I will buy the EVA pod when they will do a smaller scale! Hals the size of that is good enough I think. And it will costs lots less too! Without loosing any details since the details on the EVA pod can be easily reproduce at smaller size. IMHO
The main reason is not more money, as you sell less in the long run. Demand for "studio scale". Not everyone wants it, but it's become a very common request. No "fixation", just responding to consumer demand. Builders want to light, and add more detail. Your thought of something half the size having the same detail has no basis in reality. It just doesn't work that way.
Yes, and because of detail there was no way to do something like that. Tooling costs were pricey as is, and even something half that size would have been out of touch for the average fan at that point.

I can't wait for the Monolith kit. That's going to be a difficult build.
Rappican underrated comment lmfao
But think of the kit-bashing possibilities!
Oh, wait...
I'm just imagining "Get Low" playing over all this with "1, 4, 9" instead
Yes, it will take hundreds of hours to apply all the details!
Especially to paint it a shade of black that collects all nearby sources of light. Or even to produce geometric shapes across it's surface, now that would be cool!

Now we just need a miniature of the Leonov to go with it.
I agree!!

You and I were two of a kind, warp00009!
The details on that engine part is insane. Beautiful model.
My uncle has been an SFX model maker for 40+ years and when I was a teen, I shop interned when he worked on "2010" (for Boss FX?) and I recall the challenge for him (them) was the lack of the original Discovery and they had to work solely from stills from the movie. In a but of irony, I've seen the Discovery spacesuits they used for 2010 show up a few times on other things.
A challenge most would run away from quickly.
still an awesome movie
I’m in love. Discovery is my favorite starship of all time.
Finally a EVA pod! Freaking awesome!!!!
I'm actually really good friends with Adam Johnson. He is the expert on 2001, and a stickler for accuracy. This will be the most accurate model available....period!!!
Never realized how much it looks like a pipe. That gives me an idea! ;)
Never realized how much it looks like a sperm (and really can't believe I didn't see it before! :face-palm:)
Kubrick said that it was intended to look like a human sperm.
I like your idea.
Since you are smoking one now I suppose? ;-)

4:49 Norm has nerdgasm. Love the Kits too!
Everytime I see these large models, the opening scene to Spaceballs plays in my head
but, where are the models of Spaceball 1, Eagle 5......and Mega Maid?
UncleJackOnline there's a face plate for Dot in their latest review of props. I wanted to know more about it than star wars props.
aye, id like a Dark Helmet helmet
as it should
You'd find yourself surounded by assholes and even a major asshole!!
AWSOME! SOLD on the DISCOVERY 1 !!!!!!
Syd Mead should be credited with designing such a fascinating ship
Please Tested, do a series where Adam and Norm build a full studio 1/1 model. I know it would be a really long series, but my god it would be an epic project!

Where is the 1-day-build video??? Don't tell me I missed that!!
My "model" was a mobile I did for an art class in 1971. Oh my, I like that 1/10 scale size!
it's only a model
Erik Jasek 😅😂🤣
Seems like a death star 😂
Shh.
DO YOU LIKE THIS MODEL????? It can be yours for as little as 10.000 dollars! What a steal!
how about the Lenov from 2010
I want to be able to change the AE-45 unit on the antenna.
The details is so amazing, there are very beautiful, i love 2001 and i love this models!!!!
Build this would be AWESOME!!!
I do not believe that the unprocessed audio sounds worse than this.
Oh my word
This is just awesome!
I think an exterior view model of the AE-35 unit will be quite appropriate to make a model of it and put it near the Discovery 1.
Yes, Adam's dad is back! 😁
I'd have to say that's not 1/10th scale. To give you an idea, HO trains are 1/87th scale. I would say that discovery model is closer to HO or slightly larger. A 1/10th scale of the discovery would be roughly 40 foot long.

Wow, can you open the pod bay door?
Those 2 parts of the model remind me of the 2 famous ships from Star Wars a new hope
Looks amazing!
Did this kit ever come out? It's not on the Moebius site now.
my god....
it's full of stars🌌
0:20 Proposal: either say “twenty-eighteen” and “twenty-oh-one”, or “two thousand and eighteen” and “two thousand and one”. Don’t mix the two.

i really want that moebius discovery but i hate painting shit for myself! does it come painted or just white???
The quality of these models is fascinating, but the best part of these videos is Norm's pure joy in experiencing them! :)
That pod appears to be about volleyball size? Cool!
What about the “wheel” space craft? That would be good
Holy moly these details. O.o
Tip to buyers: If the AE-35 unit breaks and you have to fix it, TAKE YOUR HELMET WITH YOU!
As Michael Winner used to say, “calm down dear”
This is at least a week-end build! It’s fucking huge!
The Discovery is gorgeous, but I'd give my right arm for an Aries-1B translunar shuttle of similar size and detail...
One of those pods (lit up) would make a very cool desk lamp!
:0)
Interesting the cost of the larger model due to its size. Maybe someone could make a digital kit for sale that could be printed at home with a 3d printer.

I saw it in the cinema a couple of years ago complete withinterlude, it's well worth going to if you get the chance
Read the book before going to the movie. I know, the book was made from the script. Either way, the book has a lot more details and explanation.
krillen64 check your local movie theaters, they are replaying it in select places. End of August some theater are going to carry it in Imax in South Florida.

I really really really need that EVA pod!
yeah, me too. as a night lamp.
i want to 3D print that pod... ::opens cad software::
DoctorBlankenstein Open the CAD software please Hal....
Norm had to change underwear after this interview.
Can I get a matching Alexi Leonov model to strap on top?
A rusted 2010 variant would be nice to see
Wasn't it a Sulfur coating from Io?
Jonathan Ross Pretty sure it was yes, not watched the film in a while and just remember the very orangy worn look that it developed
it wasn't rust. it was sulfur from Io.
Sleeping Backbone Yep I had that confirmed by the other guy 😁
Hey Tested guys, you should get Adam Johnson on the show.

Moebius was bought by Pegasus Hobbies.
So rad!
I want a full-sized, highly detailed model of 'the bone'.
You know which one. The bone that turns into a German orbital platform...
They need another version of the Discovery with a sulfur coating.
Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh (screams like a 10-year-old girl)!!!! I model kit for a Kubrick film!!!!!! A Sci-Fi kit that matches MEEEEE!!!! JOY!!!!!!!!!

Oh... my... god... speechless...
I would like to get a kit like this but my limited budget won't allow for the price.
"1/8 scale EVA Pod.." Me: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11ELEVEN
open the door, HAL!
somehow someway i will have a model of this and the Starcar Gunstar and of course V.I,N.ecnt and the ship from the movie the black hole and have it lit proper thank you for the vid made my day now off to work "i owe i owe so off to work i go" lol
You can fill a full size David Bowman in that? Can you get him out of it again??!!
Detail is for real
Frank Winspur look like Adams long lost brother.
I'm sorry Dave you can't have my Spacecraft or my Eva Pod.......
Does anyone know if they are planning to do an Aries 1-B?
Anyone...Anyone...
Jason McDonough Bueller?...Bueller?
Dale Thelander
I was hoping someone would pick up on that.
love this channel, but I find it astounding that they wouldn't have run their audio through a scrubber to take that distracting background chatter out of the video.
Um I see the USS Kelvin there.
Had me at Kaiyodo
Lost me at $$$
Sticking to my SD Gundams & “3P” Transformers
Plastic kit in a year, much lower price...
1968 the film comes to cinema.....uhhh, my birthday ^^

What is that t-shirt Frank is wearing?
thanks!
Rockin Jelly Bean's "Escape From Women's Prison" shirt. Not sure if they sell them in the US, I got it in Japan.
I build injection molds. I hope this will be made in America, mold and all.
Josie and the Pussycats in outer space...
Norm, goodness...simmer down man. :D
I think I'd paint my Discovery orange. :-)
You could paint it, couldn't you?
I hope the NERVA engines come with real plutonium
The budget is already groaning.
"Cellophane" Norm? Are you saving cigarette pack wrappers? Let's hope they make the inner control panels in clear.
The Kit should be around $400,... clicks Exit.
Huge 2001 fan here.
Kubrick would not approve This stuff just does not need to exist. It's a fucking money grab.
isnt it plastic injection molded? for $400+ ? thats ridiculous!
I'll 3D print it for $15
The Bandai 1/72 scale Perfect Grade Millennium Falcon kit is $400.
Injection molds have very high startup costs. The market simply isn't large enough to drive down costs with high production.
DoctorBlankenstein That would jeopardize the mission Dave!!!
if they didnt cost so much they would sell and make more money. they do short runs so they can more more for less. they store the dies for 10-20 yrs and gouge some more people. lol
Wow. The new Moebius site is absolutely horrible. Tiny rectangle of content on the screen. Just text menus for the actual models, instead of something more appealing like what they had just a few months ago.

Dat Kaiyodo Discovery...... 1.5million yen?
I'd rather have a 4 wheeler!
Open the pod bay doors Hal

Frank Winspur On the other end of this, remember when people were asking for a 39" Battlestar Galactica from the reboot series?
Yes, and because of detail there was no way to do something like that. Tooling costs were pricey as is, and even something half that size would have been out of touch for the average fan at that point.
That interviewer needs to calm down!!
Geekgasm.
