Rather than create their own ideas and make something genuinely intriguing they just remake an old masterpiece thinking, how can we go wrong? Well you can go wrong by even considering remaking some of these movies, like Jacobs ladder for instance.

All "horror" movies are psychological. However, thanks for the heads up.
And ,wanna hear two movies I reanalysed? "The Ward".(It was Alice through the looking glass or where Alice destroyed everybody in Wonderland. That made it hilarious) And "The Shining".
If you watch the movie from the perspective that "Jack" is actually a ghost in the mind of Wendy and Danny. They are both attempting to put away "jack" (an abusive husband/father out of their psychi. Meaning the overlook was all in Wendy and Danny's mind. Did you notice the area/room they lived in the "hotel" seemed to resemble the original house or place they were living in before making that transition to the hotel? Or that it was Wendy who seemed to be the actual caretaker of the "motel"...You never saw Jack do any work connected to the "hotel". All he did was hang out with other ghosts, sit in that one big room(Jacks Box) just mulling around and terrorizing Wendy and Danny. Everything was from the perspective of Wendy and Danny. Jack just happened to be the main ghost in their life they couldn't break free from. Like in West World, the maze was a metaphor for their minds.
It gets deeper when you think deeper.

A recurring theme of failed horror remakes is the "sterilization" of adult content in order to satisfy the common denominator. Examples: Carrie, Wicker Man and Jacobs Ladder all reduced sexuality, eliminated (female) nudity and softened the overall tone of the originals. Hopefully indie horror film makers like Ari Aster, Robert Eggers and others will help prevent the genre from being a watered down version of its former self. After all, Luca Guadagnino remade Suspiria, and made it even darker with (imho) success.

Fly might be the best remake out there. And is being remade again. Scarface in a good remake being remade but it's hard to remake classic horror movies. And they do tone down the sex and horror of today's movies making it PG-13 for more people to see it.

@@josephsawyer3982 GREAT remakes, along with the above-referenced superb John Carpenter re-imagining of The Thing. The issue is not with the 80's, an absolutely splendid era for film-making, when there was less concern about offending people's sensibilities, but subsequently (probably starting around the late 90's, and particularly since the 2010's).

Happens all the time with Japanese and Korean flicks. For years, Hollywood even ripped off set pieces from HK action flicks - Tango and Cash and Rapid Fire both stole sequences from Jackie Chan's Police Story (1985). The entirety of 90's Hollywood action flicks attempted to imitate the John Woo style to no avail, they failed to understand what made his action sequences so brilliant. Even Woo's Hollywood offerings suffered from excessive studio interference...so the action just felt... standard. Face/Off....pffffft what a load of shite.

I actually support remakes. The reason why is because people will inevitably want to compare it with the original and, in order to do that, must watch the original if they've never seen it before. It is at this moment they will clearly see the originals are 9 times out of 10 vastly superior to the remakes. I found the Nutty Professor remake to be very good actually, but not quite as funny as the original with Jerry Lewis.

the problem with most remakes is that they do not want to convey the same type of message or feel of the original. They simply want to take the name and maybe some of the plot elements and "make it their own" but horribly fail while doing so. Part of the things that made movies "classic" especially back in the 80s and 90s is that they were willing to take risks, some of them were horrible and some were great but they took them. Modern movies are either a remake or a sequel for the most part with a few notable exceptions.

The moment I came across this video and found out there was a remake I knew instantly that 1. It would suck real bad and 2. It would be loaded with CGI.

The one and only good thing about the remake is that perhaps now we might get the original Jacob's Ladder re-released in a bells 'n whistles 4k remaster, as happened with Pet Sematary.

The trailer was enough to tell you that its a waste of time, its a remake nobody asked for or wanted. Go back and watch the first film, see how it inspired Silent Hill. By the way, has anyone seen The Hand with Michael Cane? Its directed by Oliver Stone, its not a horror masterpiece but its decent.

I absolutely loved the original. I saw it when I was a young teenager when it came out at the theaters. I had about a years worth of psychedelic drug experiences under my belt at the time and this movie freaked my shit!!!! I didn’t want to do any acid for about a month after seeing this mind-fuck of a movie. It’s a really good movie with an awesome story and all the special effects are done really well. Very realistic dream sequences that will haunt you when you shut your eyes at night just like the reviewer says!!! Do not do acid or mushrooms while watching this film because it will kick off a very bad trip! If you haven’t seen it definitely give it a go-you won’t regret it. Very scary stuff!!! This is the movie nightmare are made from!-and bad trips!!

Jacobs Ladder is one of those films that are near flawless in the writing, acting, directing etc and also captures a very specific time. Why remake a great film, to do it worse? Would never have even bothered to watch the remake and didn't even know it existed until today. Great review of the original. I give it 9 out of 10 stars. Love that movie!

As a vet with PTSD the original film helped and still helps me. Your use of the word disrespectful is absolutely fitting for this film. It takes a lot for a movie to actually make me angry but the treatment of the subject matter is so disgusting I was seething in anger. This is a cash grab of the worst kind. Thank you for exposing this trash. I just came across this and was curious why there wasn't so much outrage seeing how much hate films get for much less.

I originally saw Jacob’s Ladder in the theaters in a big group in 8th grade. We thought we were so edgy getting into an r rated movie at that age. I didn’t really understand how deep the movie really was at that age, but once I watched it when I was older and after experiencing psychedelics, it quickly became one of my favorites. I don’t believe in a literal heaven and hell, but I do believe you could be confronted by your fears and demons when you die, so obviously this movie really spoke to me philisophically.

I think the one thing that proved it won't be as good as the original film is the choice for the main actor. Michael Ealy is too good looking for the role of a worn out, traumatized Vietnam vet, and while Tim Robbins can be nice looking to most people, he was still quite average looking than most actors but it's what managed to make us feel related to his distress, because he looks just like everybody else.

    • @sherlockfan2000
      @sherlockfan2000 5 лет назад

Insert badass-funny-weird name here! -You're so right, Michael Ealy is definitely too typically Hollywood good looking for the role. Whereas Tim Robbins on the other hand while an attractive and good looking guy, was good looking in a more relatable non Hollywood sort of way, which along with the characters warmth & shyness made it very easy to care about what happens to him when things get really dark and frightening.

Based on the trailer and the fact that the hook was “ all black cast “ remake . I wrote this Diddy on Facebook
Came up with a skit to perfectly sum up my opinion of the remake of the horror film Jacobs ladder
Exec 1: let’s push That Jacobs ladder remake through
Exec 2: you mean that cult classic from nineties that inspired the silent hill games ? It’s not even that even that old yet
Exec 1it’ll make money through brand name recognition alone if we give it the same title
    ,
Exec 2: but surely horror fans aren’t nearly that dumb remember platinum dunes ? They wised up real quick
Exec 1: do I have to remind you of the financial success of Texas chainsaw 03?, I have a gimmick that’s relevant and will make money regardless
    Exec 2: what’s that sir?
Exec 1: it’s an all black cast , Get out made money didn’t it ?
Exec 2: yeah but it wasn’t a remake
Exec 1:* laughs * you know Jordon Peeles next film is a remake right ? (Candyman )
    Exec 2: *gasp*
Exec 1: I rest my case

I actually enjoyed the remake more and you can invest in remake Jacob. Remake Jacob always wanted to have a family with his brother wife and a family with her. Once the twist happened it blow me away. He lost his own son yea his son never died but his son was never alive to him. The original he might of never had a son either I like the remake a tad bit. In his mind he had a wife and in his mind he had a family you can invest in that once he lost it. I think it was a awesome remake.

I watched Jacob's Ladder in college for my philosophy of world religions class. It draws heavily on zoroastrianism.
Also to a small extent influenced by an Ambrose Bierce story I wont name because it will immediately spoil the ending.
It's an important, haunting film. And I just dont understand the push for a remake.

Thank you for watching this so I didn't have to! Remakes aren't inherently terrible (see John Carpenter's The Thing) and I can ignore most of them, but this seems so egregious. It seems they took everything that made the original so special, moving, and scary (it's one of my favorite films) and stripped it out because...reasons? I've given up trying to figure out why anyone in Hollywood does anything.
I've always thought Jacob's Ladder would make a great double bill with The Changeling, which also focuses on a father dealing with grief.

That is just straight up disrespectful to the original. That's not an art piece, it's an pure product.
Also I don't think the argument that we shouldn't complain about cgi because it is the modern times is a bad one. There are tons of amazing movies that use minimal cgi or none at all. Hereditary, The Void, The Wailing, Climax, Evil Dead, Revenge, just to name a few.

Five minutes of the remake you know it sucks on all levels. So bad. Do not waste your time. Watch the original and try not to blink. Not kidding.
