I hope you enjoyed this horror movie video.
If you have any suggestions for future film reviews leave them in the comments. Развлечения
Omg pleaseeeee make this a series! Do one for asylum horror, found footage, stalker...plzzzz! This is great.
This idea is epic! Me too i vote for this!
Agree that this is a good topic. The films in this genre run the gamut from movies that simply use institutions for “spooky” atmospherics, to good ones that explore the horrors institutions have inflicted on people, to ones that show what happens when certain disorders go untreated, to terrible ones that just treat all people with mental health issues as “bogeymen”.
Thanks for the feedback Ashley x
Yes please!!!!
another vote for found footage, please
The Sacrament and The Invitation are my fave cult films 😍
Great films!
Omg please do one about Witches, I love 'Suspiria' and 'The Witch' but Ive find it rather difficult to find more quality movies about them.
Suspria is such an amazing movie
@@stormiee_ it is!! I loved the remake better than the original..what about you?
Love your content, Emma. I realize this is 3 yrs-old, & you may have follow-up videos, & there are a TON of other movies about cults, & you haven't seen everything . . . but holy moly. You absolutely cannot have a list like this without including Lord of Illusions (1995) 😎
Great list, Emma. For more Manson, check out the TV show 'Aquarius.' It centers on both a fictional detective (played by David Duchovny) and a young girl (played by Emma DuMont) who have their lives interrupted by Manson and his family. Most of the major Manson players are there and the show even tells part of the story involving Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys.
The Following was a fantastic TV show about an Edgar Allen Poe cult. Not based on real events, but it was really interesting and well done.
A TV show I noticed that wasn’t on here is The Following; it stars Kevin Bacon and James Purferoy and is about an FBI agent that has been trying to track down a serial killer obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe for years who has created a cult surrounding himself. Definitely more on the crime/thriller side but super binge-worthy!!!
You said we will scream with Midsommar but I actually did it when you mentioned Children of the Corn. Is it wrong for me to say it is a fond memory of my childhood? hahaha that was among the firts movies I'd seen as a kid. Love it so much.
The OA is such an amazing show! I am slightly mad that it got cancelled after the second season. So many things left unsaid.
100%
The Endless was right up my alley, I love such cosmic/unexplainable horror ! Just need to mention lovecraft, since the master of it all, doh I think born in a faulty time 😂
Very interesting list!
A TV show I'd add is "The Sinner" season 2!
Okay Emma,
Films I've seen.....
The Wicker Man
Ticket To Heaven
Split Image (Thanks for mentioning this. I find it to be a pretty interesting film.)
The Sound Of My Voice
MIdsommar
The Endless
Helter Skelter
Films I've seen that would make my list of great films about cults.
The Invitation
Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones
Eyes Wide Shut
September Dawn
The Seventh Victim
Kill List
And although this isn't a list for documentaries: Wild Wild Country (Great complex documentary)
A special word about Children of the Corn: it's more a supernatural film with a cult, which would then open the doors to a completely different array of films Rosemary's Baby, Suspiria, Hereditary, The Shrine (absolutely chilling underrated film !!!), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, etc. Which I don't think we can do in a list of films about real world cults.
Films you mentioned that I really should see.
1 The Other Lamb
2 Martha Marcy May Marlene
3 Waco
4 The Master
5 Big Love
6 The Sacrament
7 The OA
8 Red State
9 Faults
10 Savage Messiah
Thanks for a great list and recommendations to get the brain sparking.
Thanks! many of the films you listed I didn't include because of the twists! but they are great films!
I love that you included Split Image. I feel like people forget about it. It is a bit cheesy but maybe that's why I dig it so much! There are so many I haven't seen and some I just want to rewatch now. Awesome job on the list!
The endless broke my heart 💔💔💔 ah im stoked. This is exactly what i needed right now. A list of cult movies and shows woop woop! Keep it up these video ideas are freaking bomb! 👏👏👏
I thought I was into "Cult content" but I've only seen about a third of these! I can't wait to dive in to this list! Thanks Emma!
Thanks winterland!
I love this list! I have seen 11 out of 20 so now I'm really looking forward to catching up on the others. Thanks Emma!
I've not come across your channel before, but I already love the way you put your thoughts across!
You're really killing it with the lists lately! My Letterboxd watchlist is getting bigger every day! Thank you for the distraction in these times!
Thank you
Aw I'm so glad you did this! :D I've only watched about a quarter of these and I can't wait to get to the rest now :)
Thanks for the inspo Danni
Thanks as always for the reviews. I enjoy hearing about new films and the ones I have already watched. Seriously don't trust most critics/opinions but you I do. Every now and then I feel differently about a film but you have an amazing way of your expressing/articulating yourself that I will still listen and hear you out.
Thank you so much Katie !
Martha Marcy May Marlene is suchhhh a good film
I love your videos so much! Just discovered your channel and it’s all I’ve been watching! Greetings from Colombia!
Thank you!!!
Thanks for the new movies to add to my list!
Hey Emma. Good list as usual. I've seen most of these except the new one you mentioned at the beginning and that 2001 TV movie. Also I recommend watching the TV show 'The Path' with Aaron Paul. I think it only went for two seasons.
Great list! The best movie about cults I've ever seen is Hereditary for sure
Excellent video, as always!
Thank you!
duuuuuuuude yes! this is the video I needed
Yay
Echoing the "The Path" recommendation others made! It's one of my favorite cult shows and reminds me a little of Big Love. Amazing list!!
Can’t believe you mentioned The Endless. I love that movie. Liked and subbed :)
The original 'Helter Skelter' was a 1976 T.V. mini-series that terrified me as a kid. Steve Railsback was utterly convincing as Charles Manson.
I only have watched 4 out of the 20 mentioned. Awesome video, keep up the good work. Love the accent.
Thank you!
Bravo.. this girl is great. Just the first minute I’m in.. so glad your mind works. Definitely the interesting part of these is the process and psychology that goes on for such things to exist. I’m overjoyed every time people recommend things based on intelligent assessment not mindless bang factor.
Always nice to see Faults mentioned. Great film. Winstead is fantastic in it and it has a mean streak to its humor that I appreciate.
Few movies from your list I saw, some I already had on my to-watch list and rest I just added to it ;) Really nice video. And if we are talking about cults in movies - Bad Times at the El Royale. Like I know it's not really film about cult, but this subplot is extremely important in story and Chris Hemsworth as Billy Lee (the cult leader) is
incredibly good.
Great! Recommandation videoooo!!! I've only seen 4 of those movies. Thanks for putting up so much content like this this days!
And I would add Wild wild country, don't know if you've seen it, but it's really great I think.
Yes! I didnt add any documentaries! thats a whole different list.
The following starring Kevin Bacon. Really nice tv show about a modern take on cults.
I absolutely loved this show. Gutted when it was cancelled.
Many people have suggested this!
I've wanted to see a video about this for ages, thanks ever so much! These sorts of films creep me out the most and fascinate me too! Soo, kind of embarrassing.....I've only seen one! And only heard of like 4 of the ones you've mentioned 😌
Thanks for watching!
Honestly waco is great, ty for helpingme remember the name of the serie, been trying to remember it for so long
If you haven't watched already, you'd like the Sunny Family Cult series here on youtube. You could probably watch every season in one sitting but they did an amazing job on it.
I ony watched 3 of them haha 😂 so excited to check out your other recommendations! Thanks Emma! 😊
Thanks for watching Joms!
Great list Emma I'm surprised I haven't seen more of these movies but I will definitely be watching them now
Thanks for watching Mark!
@@spookyastronauts it's an honor Emma
Thanks for your recommendations,Emma. I've seen only 7 from this list.
No problem!
I LOVE the Wickerman and the mysterious aspect!!
yesss this is such a great idea! cults are maybe the only things in horror that can actually scare me.. thanks a lot
I find them so interesting!
I didn’t know if you would, but I jumped out of my seat when you mentioned OUATIH! Great video, Emma! Enjoy that break haha
Thanks Darren!
Watch "Holy Hell" on Netflix. I went in blind on that one, and it scared me beyond belief.
Loved this. So glad to see it mentioned.
I’ve only seen a couple of these so lots of good suggestions to watch in lockdown 👍🏻 I still remember watching the wicker man for the first time 😍
Thanks Emma gonna get into some of these, hope you are well
Thanks for watching!
I have watched all, but Big Love. The Endless, Sacrament, and Red State are great. My suggestions: The Invitation and Apostle. The Lodge isn't a cult movie, but good movie with a former cult member. And finally, another commenter mentioned it, but you have to watch Holy Hell.
U are most welcome Emma thanks again for the wonderful review also check out the Ruins.
Lovee this video.! Thanxx for sharing.(=
Great video, Emma! I strongly recommend a tv show called On Becoming a God in Central Florida, starring Kirsten Dunst. It's about a pyramid/Ponzi scheme, but it definitely feels like a cult. There's only one season so far, but it was really good.
Oh wow thank you for the recommendation!
Have only seen 4 movies on this list.
Wicker Man
Red State
Midsommar
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Your film knowledge and the number of movies you've watched always impress me a lot, Emma.
Thank you Eric!
I've seen 5/20, but I recently watched two of them because of you haha
i want more movie recommendations like The Love Witch UuU
thank u Emma!
Thanks Blanca!
Hi Emma , Helter Skelter was a 2 part 📺 movie here in the states. Very Scary. The original Wicker Man was confusing & then ultimately horrifying. Great films. Stay Well.
You too! Stay Well David!
And actually Emma if you haven't seen it the 1976 tv movie Helter Skelter is a masterpiece and highly regarded as THE Manson case movie. Steve Railsback is amazing as Charlie!!!! You need to see it if you haven't!!!! m.imdb.com/title/tt0074621/
Thanks Emma. I'm very intrigued by cults but I didn't saw any of the films series you mentioned but I wrote 13 of them down to watch so thank you to give me something to do in quarantaine here in Belgium we're still in quarantaine for now till may 3 and then wait what they will decide after that. I love your video's. If you read I'm a big reader is the girls of Emma cline a great cult book. 😘
Incredible video Emma! You have me curious about the Waco tv series (Love Michael Shannon). Thanks so much for making me add MORE to my watchlist LOL
It’s on paramounts streaming platform and you can get free access for a 24 hours. I binged it in a day haha! I think you’ll like it
spookyastronauts Awesome. Thanks!
Very good list! I would also add The Conspiracy.
I also recommend The Following (2013 - 2015) tv show with Kevin Bacon. The first season is phenomenal!
Many people have recommended this!
I've seen Martha Marcy May Marlene, Midsommar, The Master, and Red State! I appreciate the diversity and thought you've put into this list!
Thank you Emma
Damn you forgot one of the best The Invitation
Remember when I said I wasn’t going to name any that were spoilers? ;)
Martha Marcy May Marlene is one of my favorite films of all time.
I've never heard of Ticket to Heaven or Split Image so thanks!
Enjoy!
Love you!!!!
✌️
I only watched 5: The Other Lamb, Martha Marcy May Marlene, the OA, Midsommar and Children of the Corn. Still a long way to go!! The first 2 about Charli Manson caught my attention, I will start with those. Also, recently I watched the Apostle which relates to this topic and tv show The Following.
Greetings from Portugal, Emma! :)
Hope you enjoy! :D
Bad dreams from the 80s was awesome
The first season of OA was great and loved Sound of my Voice.
👌
some of the best cult related movies are def. late reveals so well done for not playing spoiler. other channels do it religiously. Great list! mentioned everything I was thinking of. Trying to find a copy of the Other Lamb online.
Thanks gwakon!
Seen four. One of the things that is scary about cults is that nobody who is in a cult believes that they are in a cult. It's always "other people are in cults, this leader guy that I follow is different".
thanks atrounauts for the content in these tough times.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video! I have only seen 8 out of 20 so I'm writing down a lot of your recommendations.
There's a 90s Spanish movie called Los sin nombre (those without a name, but I couldn't find what was it called in English) and it's really good and creepy. It was directed by Jaume Balaguero (same director as REC).
I also recommend Sister Wives, a reality TV show about polygamy and mormons, I found it very entertaining and somehow creepy
Thank you for your recommendations! Sister wives seems right up my alley!
Los sin nombre is a great film. Recommended!
The English title is The Nameless
YES I WAS HOPING YOU WOULD DO A VIDEO LIKE THIS!
🥳🥳🥳
Another great TV show about cult is The Leftovers. Truly one of the most fascinating tv shows I've ever seen, it's crazy, weird, ambitious, poetic, and just beautiful.
I have seen a few on this list . Waco was really good. If you can check out the ‘70’s made for tv version of Healter Skelter . Based on the book by Vincent Bouglosi ( who prosecuted Manson). It’s bloody and I am always amazed it was made for tv. Great video!!
would you please do a video on psychological horror films that really stick with you ? :)
Maybe!
Thanks team SA!
YYYYAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT BIG LOVE! I'm currently on the last season and it is soo good. The show gets better and better with each season
It’s soooo good
Omg the last ep!! 🤐🤐🤐
I've only watched Charlie Says.
Another cult based TV series is The Path, set in upstate New York and has 3 seasons
Oh cool! thanks for the suggestion
Hi Emma - I just saw Sound Of My Voice - I loved it. You may not have included it in your main films because it does have a twist. Besides starring in it, Brit Marling also co-wrote it. And I'm impressed at how they made such a great film on such a small budget.
The twist wasn’t that it was a cult though ;) I’m glad you liked it
Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Sacrament were great. I haven't seen much else you mentioned but I'll be sure to check them out.
Thanks Rookie!
I miss The OA soooooo much. It breaks my whole heart that it was cancelled and I’m still not over it
2.. but I have added 4 more to my watch list! Thanks!!
I haven’t seen these movies but seen documentaries on the events that they are based on might give a few a watch
Martha Marcy May Marlene is a trio, kinda surreal. I'm still confused about the ending, like was real or her imagination ? Was anyone really after her. Red State was definitely a trip to watch. Definitely recommend. The original Wicker Man was interesting. Did not like the remake.
Apostle (2018) is also really great. it's a look at a cult from an outsiders perspective as it spirals out of control. it's set in 1905 so it's quite different from other cult movies.
Love this list. I'd like to direct you to the original Helter Skelter, staring Steve Railsback. He's the best and most bone-chilling Manson.
Oh I’ve seen it! Have it on dvd !
Thanks for reminding me about 'Faults' 😊
Have you ever seen John Huston's 'Wiseblood' with a super creepy Brad Dourif post Cuckoo Nest?
Thanks for the recommendation !
Completely accurate representation of Flannery O'Conner novella Wiseblood. Brad Dourif should've won an Oscar for this. Harry Dean Stanton also knocks it outta the park as a blind preacher. True Southern gothic.
The Wolf House, from Chile, really worth checking it out
Cool idea for a video, When i think a movie about cults i always think The Wicker Man and one of my favorite movies of 2019 was about a cult - Midsommar, And Race With The Devil is a great movie involving a cult, Totally underrated
Thanks :D
Love The Wicker Man i last watched it when i had a Christopher Lee triple bill with The Man With The Golden Gun and Dracula: Prince Of Darkness. I loved Midsommar I was waiting for you to mention that one.
He's great!
Q?- Did you ever see “The booth at the end?” It isn’t exactly in this category but I just feel like you’d really enjoy it. 2 seasons but short episodes.
5/20.. ouch.. lol. I saw The Other Lamb a couple of days ago and was actually looking for other cult films to watch, so thanks! 😘 Definitely starting with Savage Messiah
Hope you enjoy them!
have you seen Wild Wild Country on Netflix? it's so well made and the story is really interesting from beginning to end even though they leave some stuff out of it. also I'm surprised you mentioned The OA as I've never really seen it that way but I can see why it could be considered somewhat of a cult. it's my favourite tv show ever I'm happy to hear you've seen it!!! I'm gonna try and find Waco now that looks really good. thanks for all the recs :)
Yes I have :)
First, I have not seen ANY of these except Midsommar and Children of the Corn. Where should I start? Also, I would be interested to see you make a list about your favorite non horror movies. I know you talk about non horror movies some, but it would be good to see it all together in a list.
I was waiting for you to say The Colony starting Emma Watson- very dark and realistic story of a cult in Chile during the 1973 coup. Not overly violent or gory but the leader of the cult gave me the creeps for weeks!
Same! I thought Colonia would be included with this list too.
Oh yeah I’ve seen that one! But I only had room for 20 otherwise I would of gone on all day!
Totally understandable! This was a great list and lots were included that I've never seen before. I now have some good recommendations. Thanks for this video!
@@spookyastronauts could you do another cult list then? : )
I just watched the movie Believers 2007. A GREAT CULT BASED MOVIE I NEVER HEARD OF BUT IT WAS FANTASTIC! It would have been a great addition to this list!
I was surprised you didn't include "The Path" TV series
Only put 20 on this list, otherwise it would of been every cult tv show and movie ever and would of gone on forever
race with the devil is a good one from the 70's. and I think I would put fight club as a cult movie.
Thanks for the recommendation!
another cult movie based on an actual IRL cult (that many people don't know) is colonia with daniel brühl and emma watson! especially terrifying considering the german government in chile helped the cult and survivors of the colonia dignidad have been running the compound on their own after their leader's arrest and you could now visit an actual torture compound as a tourist attraction...
The leftovers is a great series as well!
I have seen only 6 of those.
- Wicker Man
- The OA
- Red State
- Midsommar
- Children of the Corn
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Well... 14 to go.
Thanks Em.
Thanks for watching Daniel!
