      I'm having overheating issues while just outputting clean hdmi, sitting idle. Have you seen it heat up while using the clean hdmi out? Even idle without recording? I exchanged my first one for a new unit and still have the same problem. I feel like I'm crazy, Sony is trying to tell me that should be normal. It's pretty unusable as a video camera with an external recorder, like on a gimbal or shoulder rig. All it takes is a couple 1 minute video clip recordings internally while outputting hdmi to overheat it. No matter what the resolution or bit depth.

      @@TheArmatureStudios even with the temperature limit set to the higher setting?

    • @TheArmatureStudios
      @TheArmatureStudios 3 года назад +1

      @@MiroAcronymity indeed. I need to get an infrared thermometer so I can give you a number but it's really hot. It'll run just on external output for maybe an hour in a cool room, sitting idle but it'll get so hot that I can't touch it. Both copies have done the same. If I record even a minute of internal footage every few minutes while outputting hdmi, it'll overheat and shut off within 15 minutes. If I set the overheat temp to low it'll shut off even faster.

    We have several A7IV cameras and one of our has this issue and the others don't. I'm convinced there are bad apples in the batch of cameras released. For example, the camera that has issues first gave that warning while I was NOT recording. I just pulled it out of the box and was setting up the menus for about 20 minutes when the warning hit. Huh? I wasn't rolling yet. Been using Sony Alpha cameras every week since July 2014 and never seen that! Warning message even while just setting it up in a cool house in the winter?! 5 mins later it shut down. Woah. So I labeled the camera so I knew which one it was of my batch and switched to high temp mode and all went well. The other A7IV cameras did not show that warning that night and I purposefully took a while setting them up...as long as that first one in standard mode.
    The final straw was our first wedding yesterday with them. Church ceremony, indoors, cool temps. All on same settings and all 3 A7IV cameras (plus our A7siii that I've been using for over a year) set to high temp mode. Only the original "bad apple" had issues. After about 20 minutes of rolling we got the high temp icon on that camera only. I pulled the LCD away and it went away shortly after. The others I left rolling with the LCD flush against the camera just to see what happens. No temp warnings on the others. And they rolled for 65 minutes straight 4k60p. Again, the one bad apple had issues before I ever hit record. I'm convinced there are bad copies of this camera out there. There's no way this one bad copy will last thru a hot summer of hot weddings here in Los Angeles so we're gonna send it back to B&H for a replacement asap.
    Just thought I'd share. Happy shooting.

      Thanks for sharing and good to know! So it does seems like some are bad apples and I might have gotten one. Anyway hope Sony releases that firmware upgrade addressing this soon. Happy shooting!

      I had the same exact situation, I was just going through the menu settings for 20min or so without shooting any video and got the overheating warning and shutdown. I'll try the settings Mario recommended. I'm hoping this isn't a "bad apple" as I don't really want to deal with the hassle of returning to B&H, so do you think there really is a bad batch that can't be fixed via a firmware update? I will routinely be shooting 4K interview videos with this camera that will exceed 30m of recording time in many cases.

    • @AllBecauseHeAsked
      @AllBecauseHeAsked 3 года назад +3

      @@markmarino6158 So far in the few tests I've done, I'm lost. No consistency. Frustrating. No longer sure about my "bad apple" theory even though I was convinced of it given how the first setup and the first big shoot went with only one camera having the issues. But it's been performing the same in my tests so I'm lost. Enabling the High Temp setting and pulling away the LCD screen obviously help alleviate overheating but I'm now on to comparing testing various codecs on 24 vs 60p and then the difference between heat performance when the camera is on a tripod vs handheld, etc. I don't know if firmware fixes will help and honestly I wouldn't rest my hopes on any quick fix like that coming. Seen some videos where using the Sony batteries help too vs 3rd party. I only use Sony batteries so for me, that's a non-issue. If I find anything significant out I'll try to report back.

    Switch to V90 SD. Ok, guys, I'm posting that comment under every video related to Sony A7IV overheating issue, because it solved the problem for me and I'd be happy if it helps you. I've browsed through dozens of videos on that subject and most of them didn't mention that particular thing.
    Yes, auto power off temp works. Opening the screen and battery door works too. Eventually it allowed me to record 35 min instead of 15 min in 4K 100M. Better, but not perfect. External recorder, switched off linking, camera grip, etc. probably does its job as well.
    But V90 SD card instead of V30 allowed me to record a 2-hour take easily. The battery exhausted earlier.
    Maybe that's dumb, but having been an A7III user, I never thought the card would be such a gamechanger. In fact, yes. Slow cards just don't have enough capacity, being overheated while trying to process the recording, they overheat the camera internally even though it stays cool on the surface.
    Don't bother with CFExpress, just a regular V90 128G card would do the thing. At least it worked like a charm for me. Thanks for the video, Mario 👍

    When I first used it, I received a heating warning after 10 minutes. I thought the problem might be in the write speed of the v60 sd card. I am using a Lexar CFexpress Type A Gold Series card (900MB/s). Likewise, at the end of the 10th minute, the machine was still heating up and shutting down. As per your advice, I set the automatic power off temperature to high. This time, it gave a temperature warning at the end of the 12th minute and shut down at the end of the 15th minute. I don’t feel very comfortable with running the camera in the increased heat tolerance mode as I have a feeling that as daily shooter this won’t be too healthy for its body in the the long run.
    I also experienced the EVF blacking out despite the back screen working. This happened for about a minute after the overheating.

    Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of.
    In the meantime, this was their advice:
    1. Change the auto power off temperature setting from “standard” to “high.” This is one we already know.
    2. Turn on airplane mode so that it’s not drawing power constantly attempting to search for devices to pair with BT and NFC.
    3. Turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting.
    4. Turn off proxy recording.
    5. Turn off focus breathing compensation.
    Other tips I’ve seen around include:
    1. Keeping the screen flipped out and away from the body (which we know, also not always ideal depending on your situation).
    2. Leaving the battery door open (which we know, but may not be ideal).
    3. Attach a lens on the camera instead of the body cap (heat can dissipate through the lens better than through the body cap).
    4. Don’t cradle the entire body of the camera in your hands for a significant period of time going through the menus and setting up the camera.
    5. Don’t play with it in bed (or any other location where it may be “suffocating” on a blanket, on a pillow, etc., just like you wouldn’t with a laptop).
    6. Do not have the camera in video capture mode while going through your settings, as the sensor is currently programmed to pull power at all times in movie mode, creating heat.
    If you have the body cap on, are cradling it fully with both of your hands coming into contact and covering most of the camera body, sitting in bed resting the camera in your hands on the blanket that’s on your lap, and you’re in video mode; it will probably overheat. Lol
    However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.”
    And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this.
    So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!

    Hi. I hope this info is useful. First, set it to High Temp of course in the menu. I did my own tests on my A74. Here is what I found. I recorded in 10bit 4K 4.2.2 H.265 (the XAVC HS mode). I put it on a tripod in a 72 degree F room. In 24P it recorded for 1 hour and 53 minutes when the battery died. No overheat warning or shutdown. After a long cooldown. I used the same codec H.265 4.2.2 4k, but at 60fps on a tripod in the same 72 degree F room and recorded for 1 hour and 42 minutes - which is when the battery died. No overheat warnings or overheat shutdown. Maybe the H.265 helped with the longer 60fps record time, or maybe it was because I had it on a tripod. Not sure. I also tried the 10bit H.265 HS 4.2.0 Codec in 24fps and 60fps and got essentially the same times as the 4.2.2 H.265 HS times. I normally record in the HS 4.2.0 mode, as I like the smaller file sizes, it edits easily on almost any computer ( since it's the 4.2.0 Codec, and most Macs and PC's have hardware optimization for that particular H.265 Codec). I always record in Slog 3, and I have yet to be able to discern any color grading flexibility difference between the 4.2.2 codec or the 4.2.0 codec in any footage I have ever shot. I haven't seen any limitation of the 4.2.0 10 bit H.265 HS codec in any color grading pushes, Noise Reduction, or effects. It all grades just as well as the 4.2.2. Hope this is helpful.

      That's not the issue here. So far as I know, people who have multiple a7IV cameras, reported that only some cameras have this issue. Meaning that this is a production issue, not an issue with all a7IV cameras. My friend ordered 4 of them for his company and only one of their cameras overheats, the other three are fine and they are not even set on high power off temp, they are on standard. I'm still waiting on my a7IV but if I have that issue, I'm returning the camera the very same day. It's a faulty product. If it was an issue with ALL a7IV cameras, then it would be a bug or a glitch that can be resolved with a firmware update, but since only some cameras overheat, not all of them, that means that there's been an issue in the production of the camera and I don't want to resort to firmware updates for my 2,600 EUR camera to work as it should out of the box.

    To me all that does is shut off the warning and shut down. The camera is still getting hot. So really not a "fix" to the overheating. That's like disconnecting your temp gauge in your car if it overheats ... then thinking "there, it's not overheating anymore".

    • @MarioSoMedia
      @MarioSoMedia  3 года назад +2

      It's really a temp fix till they upgrade the firmware. The camera works well and fine after that is set to High. The issue is that the camera "thinks" it's overheating after only 20 mins when in reality it isn't. But yeah a real fix has to come via firmware.

      Heating and overheating are not the same. A camera can run hot, without doing any damage. Overheating is when a device is so hot it causes damage to the internal circuitry. That won't happen, regardless of the temp warning. That's simply deciding when to warn you about temperatures.
      The analogy here would be if you had a fuel gauge set to warn you first at 50% and then at 20%. In neither case is the tank empty, and both are just different sensitivities.

    • @chuckm482
      @chuckm482 3 года назад

      @@davidschloss2656 Sony's own "temp warning" is shutting down the camera. It's set from the factory. I'm also wondering how the warranty would get effected when the consumer changes it to hi.

    • @davidschloss2656
      @davidschloss2656 3 года назад
