Thanks for a very good explanation. I wish you would address the big flaw that the camera don’t shoot 25 fp in h265 codec. That makes the modern h265 codec useless for everybody in Europe using PAL
That im not entirely sure of. based off of the specifications sheet on sonys website i would say 60fps www.sony.ca/en/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-7m4/specifications
Thank you this video is really useful as a photographer that is having to shoot more video this really does help. I am looking at buying the A74 so don't have my hands on it yet. Is there an mp4/mov format?
Many thanks for great review. Does this camera offer 4k recording on 100% full frame without any crop? If yes, what are the parameters? I heard that it does only in 24fps?🙏🙏🙏
It may have been said and you may have figured this out but now, but my hunch is the camera has to record all the indivdual frames to the card in S&Q mode, then read them back, then process to create the slow mo or time lapse, then record the resulting video back to the card. Hence it needs a lot of bandwidth to/from the card to allow all of these steps to work. The output file bitrate is irrelevant - its the net bitrate of all the recorded stills (which have to be written and read for the S&Q footage to be created on camera).

They should, atleast to some degree haha. i would stay away from 4:2:2 i think is the hardest thing for computers to process. using S-i is supposed to be the best for editing but takes up so much space.
Yes, I thought I mentioned it in the video but if I didn’t I apologize! I personally never do record proxies but it can be useful for some, especially with slower machines.
its specifically 4:2:2 that has the problem playing natively on mac. it will still open in editing software, as well as catalyst browse for viewing. some other video playing programs should work as well.
I'm confused about the h.265 because alot of big name youtubers say that they arent using it because of file size and difficultly with editing, however alot of the videos are from a year or more ago so im not sure if it was just before the apple m1 chip came out. Personally I just bought an m1 pro and while the files sizes are large it seems to edit just fine in h.265 10 bit even at 120 fps.....am I missing something? Am I going to run into problems exporting or uploading to youtube? Should I not be using h.265? If I recall even on your earlier video on the a7s3 I thought I remembered you saying you weren't using h.265 has that changed in the last 6 months or so? I really appreciate the videos reliable and to the point
Hey :) i see that you saw your other comments but yes i just wanted to reaffirm some of the conclusions you came to. the new apple m1 processors are really good at editing H265 and 4:2:2. i dont remember saying i wasn't using H.265, but if i did it was at the very start of using the A7S III. i now exclusively shoot in H265 10 bit but 4:2:0, as i still edit on an intel iMac. but yes your m1 should edit all your videos well. also you should be exporting your videos as h.264 as i believe that is youtubes preference (support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en)
Thank you very much :) I actually mostly shoot in H265 10 bit 4:2:0. for my youtube videos i now only shoot 50MB. I used to shoot 100MB and they look the exact same to me. RUclips compression though does bring down the quality substantially anyway unfortunately.
Hi Time Stolarz. Thanks for the video. What format is best for Short movie for film festival submission (and also for theatrical projection) ? I go fro XAVC S-I 4K. Please share you opinion. Thanks
i think generally as long as you are able to support the storage requirements of S-i its a good idea to shoot in it, but generally as long as ur shooting in 4k, and 10 bit, you'll get the most out of the camera. swithcing between HS, S and S-I have a smaller effect then bitdepth and resolution.
I think the codecs will be quite similar. But I haven’t specifically tested dynamic range. I think you get the biggest differences with picture profile instead of codec
Question? Whenever I imported XAVC S 4K Videos from my sony to my PC I was unable to view the videos at all. However after switching to XAVC HS 4K, The videos seem to be working. Why is this?
So the the problem with S is that you can only shoot in 4:2:2 if you want 10 bit. And that’s what I’ve seen most computers have an issue with. If you shoot 4:2:0 which you can get 10 bit with HS, then there seems to be more compatibility with computers
hi....very informative video...thankyou...i have a question, at times when I'm recording video in the video mode 24 fps, on opening files on my MacBook pro it shows files as an mp extension but these can't be opened with any editing software say Davinci or so,VLC does lets playback these files but then it also suggest a conversion for them to be viewed, at the same time when i records in SnQ these files are easily readable and also show thumbnails for the same....i would wish to know what wrong am i doing?.....SnQ setting are rec 24fps/Frame rate 50fps 50M 4:2:0 and Video settings are 24fps PAL 50M 4:2:2 (XAVC S HD)....is this happening cause I'm recording in 4:2:2? what i see is that when recording in any mode SnQ or Video and be it HD or 4K,the 4:2:0 files are easily read with the thumbnail showing where as that's not the case when shot 4:2:2. would appreciate your help, thoughts and comment on the same and if any work around for the 4:2:2 to be read easily. thank you regards Aamir
Yes you are correct. the issue is with 4:2:2. i've seen most computers have trouble openeing these files properly, but when i put them in final cut pro for editing they always work, so im not sure why it wouldnt in davinci.
Great video! Question for you, do you notice a big quality difference between XAVC S 4K 60P 200m 10 bit vs 150M 8bit? planning on shooting a long video in the near future but don't want to be constrained by storage and overheating.
personally i have not seen it, but i havent shot a lot of 8 bit. i always tend to shoot in HS 4k @ 4:2:0 10 bit. if you dont plan on grading 8 bit should be just fine.
I see people having 24,30,60,120 fps on their sony a7iv but on mine for example on XAVC S HD is 25,50,100 fps why is that? is it the memory card or some other settings i can change? Ill add that its the same if its 8bit or 10bit files. My memory card is only a v30 so I dont have all the record settings on the a7iv that v90/cf express cards have
Hi. I need help. I just bought a Sony a 7 iv and download Premiere pro CC. The program won't see my files at all. I can't upload the files that I've filmed at all. Where did I go wrong? Thank you.
hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - unfortunately i use final cut pro so i have no idea what could be wrong. hopefully you were able to figure this out
you maybe set to the PAL standard instead of NTSC. if you go into settings, in "setup", and in "area date" section there should be a NTSC/PAL selector.
I have just finished shooting my first video on my A7 IV using 140M 4:2:2 10 bit but my CyberLink Viewer won't play it and my CyberLink PowerDirector editing software won't import it. I have a late model Dell XPS PC with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super Graphics Adapter. Is there anything I can do to play this video format?
Hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - unfortunately a lot of computers, especially slightly older ones seem to really not like 4:2:2 footage. i personally shoot in S so i can use 4k 4:2:0 footage. you may have to download catalyst browse and export the video in a different format, but quality may be diminished.
Xavc s will not play the video on my MacBook, just the audio. And when I bring the mp4 file into Final Cut Pro, the video skips frames. Xavc hs works fine. Has anyone expedited this or know what’s going on? Is there a way I can get my xavc s video to play on my MacBook and in final cut?
So it may not be the codec thats the probelm, but chroma sub sampling of 4:2:2. for some reason the default player on mac doesnt like 4:2:2 - however in final cut pro it should work. try turning on the skip frame indicator because it might be that ur computer is not fast enough to play it smooth, not that the video itself is choppy. Xavc HS can do 4:2:0 which computers have an easier time playing.
Hey there! I got the A7IV. I notice that some footage I recorded on SD card went missing. I recorded a combination of XAVC S 4K and XAVC HD. A clip I recorded for 4 mins when complete missing on the card but the others still had a JPEG. When I put the SD card back into camera, the clips were still visible in the playback except for the clip that was 4 mins. I checked every folder on the SD card with no luck. Why is that happening?
that is very strange. and to confirm you are only using 1 sd card and the video isnt potentially being recorded onto another SD card? and sometimes i have noticed that the recording will go to a different file for some reason when i open it up on my computer.

Can anyone please tell me why this happens? Sony A7IV in movie shooting dial? It is like the triggers on The Sony app and Monitor + record buttons are acting like photo triggers nd not movie record? Help please!! Thanks
Haha yea I suppose this isn’t super beginner. There definitely should be some videos on those topics as I recall searching for them myself. Might just have to dig a little more. I’ve been also meaning to upload some very basic concept videos for beginners
So sad that in Europe, we don't have 25p in XAVC HS... Only 50p -_- If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are about twice smaller, while still having twice more frame per second oO
Hope I was able to clarify things up for you, but if not leave a comment below and i'll get back to you :)

how do I change the video format from Mp4 to Mov?

@@TymekStolarz def gunna use 420 even though I have the MacBook Pro m1
Why am I not getting the option to shoot at 100 fps in 4k in PAL? It’s only giving me this 100 fps if I select XAVC S HD ..
hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - for the A7 iV, it can only shoot 100fps in HD. only the A7S III can shoot 100fps in 4k
Fantastic, thanks!
And thank you :D
Hi i recently did a video project for a company
And I send them mp4 file
But the said they want a " ALI " file
Or "ALI TV " something like that
It's something related to text
Can you please help me what is this
This is really embarrassing for me and can impact my career
Thank you😊
And thank you for the comment :)
Oh look, I'm cured - I no longer have to buy a CFX card in order to be happy ;)

I am getting this when trying to trigger my camera with the Sony Camera App and Monitor + "movie record starts with movie shoot button still image shoot is invalid" every time I try to press record from Monitor + app and the Sony app does nothing when I click the start record button on the app? Can anyone please tell me why this happens? Sony A7IV in movie shooting dial? It is like the triggers on The Sony app and Monitor + record buttons are acting like photo triggers nd not movie record? Help please!! Thanks
I appreciate you fam!
Thank you for the comment :)
u did a good job explaining but i'm a slow learner and still don't get it
Mozesz po polsku ?
unfortunately no. i understand it to some degree, but i cant speak or write it.
@@TymekStolarz haha in Poland "możesz po polsku?" is an expression which we use to say "I have no idea what are you talking about"
Thanks Sir!👍🙏
And thank you for taking the time to comment :) I hope you have a great day!
Hello everyone, what is your experience about Sony A7IV overheating? I would be very happy for your experience. Many greetings
the A7 IV definitely overheats a lot more when shooting video especially when compared to the A7S III.
This video is a subscribe Button.
Trying to find a beginner tutorial but all the videos are so complicated and nobody explains iso shutter speed etc with videography
Only 50p -_-
If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are about twice smaller, while still having twice more frame per second oO
Why nobody talks about 30p?
