I saw Dr Fung's videos on intermittent fasting and decided to give it a try. In 6 months, I lost 20 lbs and my A1C went down to 7.5. Subsequently sfter 2.5 years, my A1C was under 6 and I had lost over 40 lbs and reduce my Insulin by more than half. I also no longer take metformin.

Sounds great but def consider adding a decent amount of red and white meat as you have GOT TO increase your protein as you age, you can learn from Dr Gabrielle Lyon for this, and bear in mind also that plant protein isn’t ‘seen’ as much by muscle it really does make a difference ..

When I did intermittent fasting in the past, I didn’t know about Dr G Lyon yet. She advises consuming 30-50 g protein (leucine) per meal to build sk muscle. Total protein per day is 1 gram protein per pound of ideal body weight. I was eating 2 meals per day and my daily fast was 14-16 hours, and breakfast was the meal I eliminated. While my diet was healthy (fish, veggies, complex carbs, protein), the #g of animal protein I consumed was nowhere near 150 grams, as far as sk muscle is concerned. As a consequence, I lost muscle mass so there’s less sk muscle to burn calories consumed, and my weight went up and I put on much belly fat. This is why I’m wondering if intermittent fasting and consuming that much protein will only work the way it’s supposed to, in an older person, if that person is lifting some weights, doing resistance training, and some cardio. I’m 67 years old.

I might add I’m 51yrs old. I went from 216lbs to 165lbs. Height 5’8”. What I learned is the question you ask yourself is “how bad do you want it”. Fellow med students and physicians - we have to educate ourselves beyond what we simply learn in school! What you might find helpful: Diseased states are caused by either/and/or a combination of: Deficiencies; Excess; Pathogens; Toxicity, and Stress (chemical-, physical-& emotional) - including lack of Deep Restorative Sleep... (Remember mnemonic DEPTS).
Besides for the excessive indulgence pointed out; when on a diet of refined, processed foods; developing cancer seems closely linked to microbiome disturbance/destruction, through for example antibiotic glyphosate, as well as prescription antibiotics; also harmful, toxic additives added to beverages, foods, personal products, medications - including in some supplements and vaccines, etc. Sugar also does not burn as clean (as ketones); thereby leaving much waste products to clear.
Then there's Cholesterol deficiency caused by agents like vegetable seed-oils and prescribed statin drugs; this in combination with a low fat diet, and inadequate sun exposure; leading to lowered production of Vit D, and thereby inhibited immunity. Studies had proven that both statins and seedoils can also induce Diabetes.

She observed a complete turn around of the medical profession from trying to work with patients on a nutritional level and get them to improve eating habits and stop bad habits, smoking and excessive drinking and adding exercise. They did this before offering medication which was used as a last resort. She watched this go from that to prescribing drugs after a first visit without much or any mention of health. So, after a doctors career he will leave behind thousands of patients who are taking drugs for the rest of their lives, and many who have gotten worse and worse.

But we love cheese and ice cream. I especially am happy eating a good sourdough with butter. We both need a jump to our hormones- fasting will help. I know I can do it. I've already been eating fruit for breakfast and my last meal about 2 or 3pm. Really because of acid reflux. I feel better when I eat before 5pm. As a nice side effect, I lost 30 lbs. and cholesterol went down from 277 to 218. (I did not take cholesterol meds during this time either, even though they were prescribed.) If you're not skipping dinner on your 16/8, try eating according to our Circadian Rhythm. It's a game changer. Here's how to do it...
Eat your largest meal between 7 and 9am (the Stomach Meridian) "Break"fast and your 2nd meal (last meal) between Noon and 2pm (the Small Intestine Meridian). Fast between 2pm and 7am. Repeat. Do not snack between meals.
Remember this, the digestive system weakens as the day progresses, making dinner the worst time to eat. Eating with our Circadian Rhythm works with the metabolism (which slows down during the day and evening) not against it.

None of us are strangers to doctors talking, but his ability and willingness to speak with such honesty and candor is what separates him from the pack of talking heads. The calling out of the patient, the calling out of the profession, and the calling out of the industry, both healthcare and pharmaceutical, are the variables that are missing from the bulk of public conversations involving doctors. try a full water fasting for 3 days first. make sure you put minerals in your water from fasting (a pinch of sea salt or pink Himalayan salt) this will keep you from feeling light headed, or tiered, leg cramps etc. Very important to have your mineral in water while fasting! Once you have gotten through a 3 day fast then do one meal a day between 3-5 depending on when you feel like eating the meal but don't eat any later than 5. if you eat fruits, nuts seeds, veggies, proteins and healthy fats, you won't need more than one meal and you will feel full for a long time..the carbs cause the sea saw of eating every few hours so when you don't eat them you don't feel hungry so often. Drink lots of water during your initial 3 day fast and get rest, extra sleep, just take it easy and do things to distract your mind like reading, go for walks, etc but stay away from tv and food commercials or things that will trigger you to want food best as you can. if you work full time outside the home try doing your 3 day fast or at least start it when you have your days off. If you have coffee every day you can have tea with no milk or sugar just so you get a little caffeine cause the withdrawl can be difficult and give you headaches but tea is better than coffee . I lost 60lbs in 3 mos this way...hope it help you. The first 3 day fast won't be easy...but you can do it if you truly in your heart want to. Make a list of the reasons you want to loose weight and put it on your fridge, put a pic of when you looked thin and healthy also, prepare yourself menially for a few days first and be sure to put some minerals in your water especial if you star to feel light headed or just icky go have a glass of water with a pinch of sea salt. When you fast your body burns off the trash first...so it can get a bit uncomfortable as you burn off the toxins stored in the fat. After you have done the initial 3 day fast the one meal a day is easy if you stick with it and do not break it even for one day and eat healthy (no breads, pasta, processed foods, sugar, etc) you can eat as much as you want for your one meal...so eat lots and enjoy it...prepare fresh food and have fun trying new recipes and tastes. Try lots of different spices, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds etc and new food combos....it helps! I wish you the best of luck and I hope sharing with you what helped me helps you! 😊💙

In my youth I usually ate one meal a day, in the evening. I drank black coffee or tea, and diet soda & bottled water. If I ate more, I gained weight. At 50yrs old, I suffered a loss that triggered severe depression & gained 70lbs by “grazing”. (A lot of powered donuts) The first time in my life, I was on blood pressure & cholesterol pills. Couldn’t breathe. So I began a carb free diet.(I read some where, that not enough calories, especially carbs, cause that burn easily, will cause the body to burn lean muscle before it will burn stored fat tho I maintained my weight for years eating one meal a day). So I ate steak, eggs, bacon, had real cream in coffee, butter. Just protein 40% & fats 60% I felt hungry for about 3 days (carb withdrawal)? I used strips to test my urine for ketones & it was very high. I lost 75 lbs in 4 1/2 months. Didn’t loose muscle mass (your heart is a muscle) my doctor took me off all meds. My BP was normal, my triglycerides went from 410 to 99. He said he wouldn’t recommend what I did but had to admit my health was 100% better & had probably dodge diabetes. I’m back to a meal a day. Low calorie, but some good carbs, oats & vegetables, lean meat, no sugar.

I started fasting after seeing an interview with Dr Fung. In 12 months I lost 23 Kilos.
Regardless of losing weight which has made me look so much better, the real bonus is my health. I feel so much better, I can actually get out of bed without a problem where as before I had to help myself up by holding on to something. I couldn’t remember the last time I could actually squat down to pick something up off the floor without having problems standing again. Dr Fung’s honest interviews on fasting has been a God send for me. I have so much respect for this Doctor. He’s not trying to sell me tablets and potions and you don’t even have to buy his books because he explains everything on You Tube for free. I am so very grateful. Fasting is not easy but getting out of bed every day six and seven days a week at 5am wasn’t easy either for four years and I lost a whole 3 Kilos and gained arthritis in my feet from all the impact exercise so I’ll take fasting any day day. I skip breakfast leaving 16 hours between dinner and lunch the next day and make sure I eat dinner within eight hours between lunch and dinner. I eat Greek yoghurt with whatever fruit I have in the house and maybe a few walnuts mixed in. This keeps me full for five hours and then I eat dinner which consists of chicken, beef or fish with salad or vegetables. I have as much as I want, I don’t weigh anything and on Sunday I eat pasta for lunch and a very light dinner like tomatoe and lettuce on a few crackers. I love food but I changed my mind about food. I need food to fuel my body, I don’t need food for pleasure. I say this every day. Don’t get me wrong, I slip up sometimes, I go out to dinner sometimes I eat cake sometimes but I stay mindful and get back on track asap.

This, combined with the elimination of bread, rice, pasta, soda and added sugar has been life changing. Dr. Fung's book on fasting was instrumental in this journey. The objective was not weight loss, but I did reduce my body weight and body fat percentage, while increasing lean muscle mass through exercise. My diet is a combination of paleo and keto.

My husband went from pre diabetic to perfectly normal. His doctor asked how he did it!
He started with a fast for several days, only water, coffee, tea, cocoa and when he started eating again he totally cut out potatoes, rice, bread, cake, cookies, pastry and sugar. All wheat was out, oats were in. He lost about 45 pounds and never even felt hungry.
For breakfast there is porridge, a lot of fruit, but no bananas or pineapple.
For snacks I grind oats in a coffee bean grinder to make oat flour and with that you can make oat cakes, pancakes, brownies etc. I use equal amounts of oat flour and oat bran for all these and sweeten the cakes with Splenda or Zylitol or a little maple syrup sometimes.
For the oat cakes I use olive oil instead of butter and add lots of nuts, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger and also dried apricots.
So, for oatcake snacks my recipe is: 1 cup oats, 1 cup oat bran, 3 eggs, chopped nuts, chopped dried apricots, about 3 ounces olive oil, 1 cup water, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon each ginger and nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon cloves . Pinch of iodized salt. Splenda to taste; I use about 3 tablespoons. Pour into a baking pan or cake tin, Bake as you would a cake , for about half an hour, cut in squares while warm. Cool and you can then freeze some.
Brownies are the same, but add half a cup of cocoa and additional half cup of water, so 1 1/2 cups water, and leave out the apricots and spices.
Main meals are some form of protein (meat, fish, etc) and mixed fresh veggies, usually about 5 different ones all cooked together, like carrots, broccoli, celery, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage. Really tasty on its own, sometimes with celery salt and za'atar sprinkled on during cooking if I do it as a stir fry. If you boil it, the water is a tasty drink.
For desserts we have fresh fruit salad with yogurt and sprinkled with oat cereal and ground nut cereal.
Then came a blood test which came back saying his platelets weren't right or something, he wasn't sure what this was all about, and he had to have a second test in 5 days.
So he took a teaspoon of Marmite every day and the next test came back perfect. The nurse asked what he did, and she said she would start eating Marmite! Lots of salt in it, so it is not for everyone.
We always buy Mornflake oats here in the UK, but there are good non GM oats in the USA too.
We just thank God that we are in our 70s and not on any meds at all.

Been fasting since 2017. Now, I eat one meal a day. It was not a difficult transition at all. I cook all my meals so I control what goes into my body. For those thinking about this and have extra body fat, do it. I combine it with auyervedic (sp?) so avoid grains before bed since it takes a ridiculous amount of time to digest. I had also performed three colonix treatments prior. Cleanse your system, fast and train your body to not crave grains/carbs/sugars. 👌 Consider this a way of loving yourself. Self-Love. 🙏 You can do it. We all can.

@@katehenry2718 depends what time you get up. If you want to eat from 8am, then eat at 8am, your 8hr fast window would stop at 4pm. Most people can manage the 16/8 fast easily. 8-4, 9-5, 10-6, and so on. An 8r eating window. I do 11-7 and if I’m up earlier, I drink herbal tea or coffee until 11. It’s not hard.

Dr Fung said in one video that to reduce blood sugar you need to think of your stomach as a sugar bowl. every time you eat, you fill the bowl with sugar. Keep eating & the bowl overflows. you need to give the body time to absorb the sugar before eating again. this was a eureka moment for me. Three months later I had reversed my t2d & no longer on any medication. that was in 2018. I am 70 now, active & healthy. I still do daily intermittent fasting & from time to time 36 hour fast. thank you dr. fung.
