      @@roughout how long you do it regularly? Be warned that your metabolism will slow after some time. I am the example. Best way to maintain faster metabolism is to randomize/switch fasting and feastings. So not alwas same fasting at same time, because body will adapt and slow you: cold hands/feets, slower thoughs, less rest metabolic rate +thats the worst+. No matter how less calories you eat, your body will burn daily less and less and less and even a little more increase of calories will result in fat gain...

      Dr. Fung is right and Westman was wrong. Fungs reference to paleolithic times and humans fasting for thousands of years is a legitimate human study. Just like the reference to meat eating for a million years. Not everything has to be proven in a lab because there are biases among scientists and many scientists with vegan agendas will either alter the study or bury the results. We already know this happened.

    A co-worker nagged me for six months to read Doctor Jason Fung's book, The Diabetes Code. In October 2018 I started fasting. According to how I understand Dr Fung's book, I also went low carb high fat in the meals between fasts. In practice, I ate a lot of barbecue chicken wings. It worked great. I lost 20 kilogram in about five months. I was ecstatic. My family doctor never really bought into the idea that I might be doing the right thing. He was happy I was losing weight.
    My family doctor said he was surprised that I was losing weight on my own, not following his advice to eat 5 small meals a day, 300 calories each meal. He used to tell me not to eat fat. He used to tell me to have an apple about 11 pm so I would not get low blood sugar while I was sleeping. Almost everything he told me, Dr Fung's book told me the opposite. My family doctor has been my doctor for many years, all through the years I became fat and diabetic. When I following Dr Fung's book, My body weight came down. My A1C came down. I came off insulin injections.

      Plus he advises them to eliminate sugar since their traditional diets also were low in sugar. We know from the research of Dr. Johnson and Lustig have shown that sugar is more dangerous than starches because half of it is fructose and fructose is just metabolized by the liver while glucose can be metabolized in all tissues of the body. So people that eat a lot of sugar are more likely to quickly get fatty liver disease. That's one of the reasons that we're seeing fatty liver disease in children with their increase in consumption of sugar and sugary drinks

      @@almaburns6562 at the very least, every day I was intermittent fasting. I generally follow an 18/6 IF schedule. And also everyday was doing a ketogenic diet. Then on occasion I would do a 3 day fast. Every once in a while I did 5 day fasts. Then a few times a year did a 7 day fast. So, of course all of that time before that I had been doing a keto diet for years (had lost a lot of weight) before I stumbled upon fasting. Also playing with carnivore and OMAD. In the late 90’s I had cancer twice. Just a couple of years apart. Knew if I didn’t start taking my health seriously I would die. Second cancer (triple negative breast cancer) they gave me a 5 year life expectancy. And told me *when* the cancer would come back it would metastasize in my brain, bones, or lungs. Through lots of research decided keto would be my best bet to live a bit longer. That was about 20 years ago from the breast cancer :-) and 22 years since the endometrial cancer. Not to mention, blood pressure is 110/68, better now than when I was in my 20s (off those meds too, at age 54). After years & years of struggling to keep my health/labs under control while doing the 6 meal per day ADA recommended diets that always left me hungry and stressed, I've found extreme low carb (keto/carnivore) and intermittent fasting literally saved my life-- not only making me healthier, but I so much more enjoy what I eat, I'm satiated, and it's just easier than running around always trying to balance small meals & snacks.

Eating low carb and being in ketosis makes lengthening the time between meals a breeze. I never tried any sort of fasting while eating high carb. I'd think that would be miserable. Low carb is definitely the driver.

    Dr Fung's original clinic catchment population was multicultural and sociocultural strugglers for whom fasting (usually for religious reasons) was not a foreign concept. It was quite acceptable to his patient population whereas removing carbs from a traditional diet was problematic. Because he was dealing with very sick people, his clinic used 'therapeutic fasting'; mostly alternate day fasting and longer fasts (under supervision for anything greater than three days).

I am not currently exercising (icy and wintery here) but soon will begin walking 2 miles a day again. So happy Dr Westman didn’t disregard Dr Atkinson study. Westman, Fung, Cywes, and Berry are stars.

    For anyone more curious for deeper details on fasting, Dr. Pradip Jamnadas has two lectures on YT that goes over it in great detail. Insulin, what foods to eat/avoid, diabetes, the mechanics of how it works, how addiction works, etc.
    I've done a 48 hr fast (carnivore) and I've been doing IF. I was lowkey shocked by how better I felt during day 2. It may take a while, but you do have to go low carb. And drink your electrolytes and water. I plan on doing more 48 hrs fast, (it really helps my healing digestion) maybe I can get to 3 or 4 day fasts where the real benefits spike.

Neither one of you say the other diets are wrong (unlike the other guys who hate you) in fact you suggest their way may work for some. The patient in the end is your concern, as it should always be. The time restriction to eating/fasting can be very useful for someone who has overeating as a habit. Until they can overcome the mental hunger (i.e. habit, boredom, or emotional comfort) and be able to make the distinction between that and actual physical hunger. Minimizing insulin spikes and increasing the overall satiety of the food can help with that journey, but people may be coming from many years or decades of habit forming experience. And a defined time restriction can help be a guardrail on that journey.

    Good video! Thank you Dr Westman. 13:00 says it all. There isn't enough data on muscle and bone loss during continual years of IF/extended fasting. imo Seems safer to lose weight or reverse diabetes with traditional keto. (keto meaning more frequent meals of moderate protein, high animal fat and carbs less than 30g/day.)

    • @fractalbeans9513
      @fractalbeans9513 5 месяцев назад +3

      Couldn't agree more! Re bone and muscle loss, I remember a presentation by Dr Stephen Phinney on the effect of prolonged fasting; in a nutshell, metabolism initially peaks (first 2 days), then slows down and plummets, and not only weight loss slows down but metabolic rate stays low for several years (Biggest Loser style). He also talks about loss of muscle mass. Another problem is psychological: this type of intermittent fasting might lead to a vicious cycle of binging. Ketogenic diet seems to be a superior method as it is physiologically sound, the body learns to be sensitive to true hunger signals, it gives one the power to overcome carb addiction and, with the proper human diet, no alimentary deficiencies are likely.

    • @Ronlawhouston
      @Ronlawhouston 5 месяцев назад +4

    I follow a carnivore diet, am a Type 1 Diabetic, and strength train. I also fast once in a while (2 days every 3 months or so) as a tool. I have had no problems doing this. I have lost no muscle mass and afterward, have noticed increases in strength. It helps to increase my insulin sensitivity and also with weight control. I eat about 3500 calories a day, only use about 20 to 30 units of insulin, and my A1C is 5.1. I also only eat twice a day in the style of the Vikings... Sun up and Sun down. That works for me. As I said, fasting is just a tool among many.

    Great video. Since 2020, I've been keto with fasting (primarily 20:4, with periodic multi-day fasts). I've achieved great results and feel fantastic. The area where I struggle the most is knowing when to quit eating, when my eating window is open. I can't count the number of times that I've heard the adage "You can eat all of the animal protein and fat you want. Your body will tell you when you've eaten enough." Although I want to believe that, it just hasn't proven true for me. It's easy for me to fast, but once I start to eat, I want to eat everything in sight. If it's on my plate (or nearby), by God, I'm gonna eat it. LOL So, I have to be really careful when my eating window is open that I eat only a reasonable amount of food/calories (even with all of the calories being 'quality' calories/foods). I believe that the Energy Model and Insulin Model have to be used together, to achieve substantial fat-loss and metabolic-improvement results. The low-carb, fasting lifestyle has greatly improved my quality of life and, probably, my lifespan, too.

      Just to add on to what I've already said, I loved Dr. Fung's statement that even when you overeat for a period of time (such as during the holidays), it's easy to get back on track, but simply restricted windows and/or by going back to very low carb. I've had my friends tell me, "I've blown my diet, and have ruined myself." That's just not true. Cut the insulin levels, by fating and/or keto, and you'll get right back on the wagon. This lifestyle (blood glucose lowering) is sooooooooo much better than the calorie-restriction method (by itself) that has been preached for so many years.

I'm also able to fast for two meals once a month for religious reasons. I see so many people online who still say diabetics need to eat every few hours. That's such bad advice. Maybe they aren't diabetics, because I haven't had an endo or GP tell me I need to eat every few hours in the 20 yrs I've been diabetic. You may not need to fast everyday, but you need to stop stuffing your face with carbs 'in case' you might feel weak. 😄
