How to Powdercoat a YETI in Two Colors the Easy Way

  • This is an easy way to apply two colors of powdercoating to a tumbler whether it's a YETI, RTIC, OZARK TRAIL, TWIN PEAKS, or a RecPro as I actually used in this video. I have done several methods to achieve this same outcome and have to say not only do I look this method the best, the outcome is consistent.

    Great work! I've been having issues with powder coating cups 1. a two toned blend cup, trying to blend just below the curve of the cup but seem to have to blend even lower due to the over spray. 2. When doing a two toned cup, such as the green monster cup above, I seem to peel up some of the second coat paint when peeling my vinyl off. 3. Orange peel of the powder after cured Any recommendations?? Thanks again!

      +Jodie Farmer I use Cricut rose or 631 if I'm removing the vinyl. If I catch the glue before full cure I clean it with VM&P Naptha like I show in one of my other videos.

    Nice diy, I used to paint commercial and one thing we did to reduce the orange peel texture effect was to sand down the walls before applying the second coat. I know I'm this case it wouldn't work as you would scratch the logo but maybe the tip will come in handy in other methods.

    • @ManCrafting

      I've actually used that method for repairing a bad coat before, but never thought of it helping with orange peel. Thanks for the tip.

    Great Video Chad! I'm going to be trying this out tomorrow. My business here in Alabama is starting to take off so want to try some different paint graphics. I got your paint stand in the mail this past Monday and love it. I will be purchasing another paint stand in the next couple of weeks. To anyone reading this, buy one, it really works. I see in this video you are using the shop towel on the plate to keep paint out of the inside. Is this better than the baking mats? I am waiting for those same mats from China (obviously in on a slow boat from China). Thanks again for a great video (and it is well done, I do training videos and know a little something about them). One request, how about a tour of your setup. It would be interesting to see it.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      As long as you remove it before baking too long I think it's working out very well. Very low cost. I get 4 cups out of each sheet. I'm cutting the sheet off after I drop the washer. I precut about 1/3 from the center and 1/3 from the outside. This makes it easy to remove the sheet without touching the cup.

    Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. Quick question, when I tried this it seemed that my vinyl was powder coated underneath. I feel like I got it to thick. Did you prewarm your cup with the sticker on it before applying the final coat? You made it look so easy when you removed the vinyl.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      Johnnie Werner powder stuck to the vinyl? I'm not 100% sure what you're asking. I coat and 80% cure. Then apply vinyl. Heat to about 200F then apply second coat at 180F. Back in oven for 90 sec. Pull from oven and let cool below 150. Pull the vinyl. Back in oven for pmt and full cure.

    I have been having so much fun with my Daughter doing these cups!! We have learned everything from watching your awesome videos so first off THANK YOU!! I used orcal 651 vinyl and cant seem to get it off! Should I be using a different kind? Pull it out of the oven faster? Could my topcoat be too thick? Just wondering if you have any thoughts on what to try differently before I keep messing up cups! LOL

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I'm glad your enjoying the videos. Some people who pull the vinyl when the cup is still dangerously hot love 651. I prefer the vinyls that barely stay on the cup. Cricut Rose works well for us. Not sure how long you left it in the oven, but 2.5 min is plenty. Pull, cool until you can handle the cup. Usually around 125. Pull the vinyl.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      I had to watch the video again to see what you were referring to. lol. I think you are asking about the transfer vinyl. It's just clear Contact Brand contact vinyl. You can find it where shelving liner is sold.

  • @BrianKMartinez
    @BrianKMartinez 7 лет назад

    I've been using duck brand adhesive contact paper for my stencils. I'm curious if you've tried it and how t compares to the cricut vinyl. I can get a 22' roll of this for $6 in clear and in whatever pattern they have at the time.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      +Brian Martinez I haven't. Where do you buy it? Cricut is much more expensive so I'm certainly willing to give it a try. I love reducing costs as much as anyone. Sometimes it works out great, other times it doesn't. You never know until you try.

    • @BrianKMartinez
      @BrianKMartinez 7 лет назад

      +ManCraftingTM just from Walmart. I think it's the same stuff you're using for your clear top sticker on your stencils just with an opaque pattern. Although I usually need to use that naphthalene stuff to get the adhesive off before finishing. But at least it's cheap.

    does the 651 or 631 vinyl hold up better in the oven? Iv gave some of the 631 draw up or shrink on me. I have ordered 651 to give it a try. what is your ta k e on it?

      Chris Clary for permanent I use 651. Non permanent I use Cricut Rose and make sure the powder is at least 80% cured first.

    • @Nate-_-McCrary

      +ManCraftingTM I have the Eastwood dual phase gun. I think most of my problem was due to the small size of my air compressor.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      +Nathan McCrary we used a pancake for 6 months. Right now I have a hot dog until I finish installing my 60 gallon. It is a little inconsistent. I think it has a crappy pressure regulator.

    I'm having an issue getting powder to stick to top of cup. I own a Muffler shop in Palestine Texas so I'm going to build some stands this week. But how do I ground through the paper towel like your doing. Should I run a ground separate. Or is there a way without doing that.

    • @ManCrafting

      It's grounding through the aluminum I have on the top of the stand on the inside of the tumbler.

      Anytime I want to recoat an already coated tumbler I sand and then hot coat if I'm covering with the same color. If you want to completely redo the tumbler you can strip it completely.

    I'm having a problem with my powder coating. wonder if u can help me. I have a stand similar to yours, I use blue shop towels as insulator. when I start shooting, the powder seems to gather at the mouth of the cup making it look like a "run" when u over spray while painting. I make a conscious effort not to spray near the mouth of the cup but the powder seems to accumulates in that area. I hope I made some sense and you can picture it. is there anything I need to do differently. thanks for your time.

    2 questions. If the vinly leaves a residue how are you getting it off? Or what are you doing to avoid getting the residue? And when only using one color and letting the stainless steal pop through do you use a clear coat or what do you do to make it a smooth surface all the way around the cup?

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      I pull the template before the powder completely flows. It gives a smooth transition. You can still tell it's different heights, but it's smooth. As for glue. ruclips.net/video/2GP7VsB_zug/видео.html

    Wow...I just got my gun in. My Dad surprised me with it and 6 colors of powder. I have watched so many videos and still afraid to begin. Can you tell me where you buy the stand you set your cups on? And do you have more info on the grounding you were talking about? Also, I was hoping to do some large and medium washer for the game and jewelry...do you have any tips on how to get both sides powder coated without any places being missed? Thank you in advance for you any guidance. Jackie Gray

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад

      First off, you have a very cool Dad! Second, I am putting the grounding video up tomorrow. As for missing areas on washers, just using a thin wire seems to do a pretty good job covering the washer. I had to really focus to find the area where my fairly thick wire contacted the inside edge of the washer. I was concerned about that as well. Then lastly, I built my stand and many people contact me to build some for them. I'll be building another dozen or two over the weekend. Email me at ManCrafting 101 at gmail to get more info.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting  7 лет назад +5

      Steve Friedlander not sure. I generally pull it long before that point. I know it doesn't behave well over 350. So I usually take it off as soon as I can.
