- In this video I show how to remove the duracoated finish that comes on YETI and a variety of other tumbler brands including JDS as well as Ozark Trail. Most of us have this around the house or workshop already, but if you don't, it's a short ship to the local Home store,

I found it! The Silicone Mat that I referenced in the video is on Amazon. Follow the link below. amzn.to/2BvBS4s
I know it will remove yeti duracoat. For the towel, I usually use amzn.to/3Sa1Lc4
That is so helpful Chad! We've been using Acetone to remove labels and coatings for years, but never thought of wrapping up the items like a potato to allow it to soak in and prevent evaporation. Super awesome tip, thank you!!
That’s sweet dude! Minimal waste... perfect! I love the little MC cups. Good stuff!
Heath Knuckles thanks Heath. Wish you were coming down to IWF. I guess I’ll have to settle for Carl. 😁
Very cool and easy! Your videos are getting much better! Nicely done.
Cammie's Garage Thanks Cam. I hope you’re right. I exported this one 4 times before I was happy with sound levels and the edit.
Very Cool! Now you got a bunch of cup you can reuse , instead of throwing them away.... If you don't have one of these cup you are missing out. They are Awesome!!! I use mine everyday and love it. Thx Chad 👍👍
Omg! So glad I found this video! I do make a little well/bow out of the foil before pouring but I was so worried about the acetone on the finish and this eliminated that fear
Glad it helped.
I need this video a while back.😮
Great video! Rescued a cup that was peeling. Thank you!
Glad it helped. 👍🏼
Great episode, I dug the editing!
ROCK N WOODWORKS thanks Eloy. I’m trying to improve. Everyday.
That seems easy enough i could do it....have a great weekend Chad
Robert Evans if I can do it anyone can.
I boiled mine since the coating was too thick for acetone to work. I used a plastic scraper to get the paint off while the cup was still very very hot and still submerged in the water. It worked.
Thanks for the good info! I was thinking of trying this by filing a paint can or a tall wide-mouth jar with acetone or laquer thinner! Then I could save any leftover to use later!
Blakehx I thought about that as well. That’s what commercial powder coating companies do with Benco B-17 stripper. Just bath it and keep using it over and over. I considered doing that as well. I have a glass jar and a metal bucket that either would work. My only concern was the liquid getting into the seam and coming out after I coated the cup. So I passed. I may try it, but if you do it first, let me know how it works.
I was curious what you did with cups that didn’t come out how you wanted. Super cool seeing my logo on there.
Perfect! Thank for the tip!
I also use this. www.removepowdercoating.com/
Thanks for the info Chad! 👍👊
Fred McIntyre thanks Fred. Hope your having a great weekend.
The duracoat came off the YETI like a thick sunburn. I need to get one of those silicone mats. Awesome!
Thanks. That mat, I added a link to it in the comments. It should be pinned. I appreciate the help on the camera. I've gotten great feedback. Also, did you see Greg did a live last night?
Brother that just saved me. Thank you.
Glad it helped.
YES!! Thank you.
Great tips Chad
Highlandboxes thanks Pam. Just trying to be helpful. 😁
Thank you so much!!!
Fantastic job! I was glad to find your shop information right up front. I ordered my t-shirt... I'm still waiting on my sticker though.. lol!
Tracy Keaton didn’t I send any with your tumblers? If not I’ll get them out Monday. Unless you’re going to any of the events in the ATL next week. The Highland Hardware event or IWF.
I guess I'm a little ashamed to say this but this is the first I'm hearing of it. I wished I had known sooner about it. I had no idea anything was going on like that in the area. Hey have a great time! I just won't be making it this time. Hope to see you in the Atlanta Woodworking Show this coming spring! Many blessings!
✍ and Yes I need your sticker! You must have overlooked it somehow. Hit me up on messenger I'll give you my address.
Awesome goggles!
Pretty easy and I’m sure it’s satisfying.
Ken
Moonpie Creations super easy. I was using a powder-coating stripper that can easily cause 3rd degree burns. I like this way better.
ManCraftingTM lol. I would have to say so
thats cool, its like peeling sunburn :D
jp woodwork I know there are people who are thinking exactly that. I didn’t want to be the one to say it. I figured it would be best to leave that up to you or Pat. 🤣
hahahaha FIRST!!! LOL
This is awesome man!!! And yeah I'm interested in the huge silicone mat. I have 2 food silicone mats off amazon but a huge one would be nice. 👊🏻😉
LOVE the Direstaofus stencil still exists!!! 👊🏻😜
WoodenCreationz thanks. Do we know if it made it to the next person yet?
I know this is older but I’m trying to get duracoat off of a revolver I bought from someone. Any suggestions with what I’m learning here?
Cool!
Thanks.
cool channel ! subed !
Oh man this was awesome, I got a couple of cups I need to remove the powder coating . I was wondering what would be the best was to get them cleaned up. Thanks
Carlos Campos this method works real well for Duracoated tumblers like the YETI. I still need to try it on one I’ve powder coated to see if it delivers the same results. I’ll let everyone know.
Carlos Campos - I've been using a product called 'Tuff-Strip' from Crown. Got it at a local Home Depot/Lowes. It's pretty harsh so wear gloves/mask. It works pretty good on powder coating if you let it sit on cup for couple hours. Then use acetone to wipe off. Best thing I've found so far for removing powder. I tried uploading a pic but i guess i can't in the comment section.
Any idea if this will work on polymer? Im trying to remove it from my polymer frame
👍👍👍👍like that mat!
Gib Clark Thanks Gib! Doing any Blacksmithing? I’m going to Jimmy’s in Nov for Rory’s class.
ManCraftingTM just work...been crazy
Gib Clark all work and no forging will make Gib a dull boy. 😁. You were creating some cool stuff. I want to see more.
@@ManCraftingthanks...hopefully before to long...
Take care when drinking coffee (or any beverage) in the workshop. I once took a swig of paint thinner by accident. Luckily I didn't down it ...
Damn.
@@ManCrafting I wasn't bragging ;)
Try citrus stripper on powder coated cups, same process
Great tip.
Do you have any products to remove clear coat off whirlpool dishwasher steel door?
It’s the cheep ones that are being installed in new apartment building these days.
Much appreciated
If anyone has an idea will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Not that I know of
This is great! Recoat??? Do you have a video on that?
Jim Allmon not on recoating one of these but I’m using one I recoated right now. I’ll add one to the end of my next video since it’s the rotary upgrade. It will make sense there.
Thank you Sir... looking forward to it.
Wow !!
Thanks.
That's pretty slick! I'm guessing that was an enamel paint. I may have to give that a try on a couple of other things I need to strip the paint off of. Thanks!
Certainly worth a try. Duracoat is a 2 part air cured Urethane. So it's a little different than the Powder coating that I use. Most of what I use is a polyester blend. Paint may very well peel if done the same way.
Thanks for the tip. I know that some gunsmiths like to use Duracoat, but I didn't know it was a 2-part urethane. I'll have to play with some of the enameled pieces I need to strip and see if it's any help at all.
That’s awesome does this work with yeti cups?
I does, but I have another video with a product that works real fast and am about to do a video on a gel version.
Do you use acetone on a stainless cut to get a label off the same way?
It works great on labels as well.
Do you think this would work on the yeti dog bowls? Also what kind of paper towels did you use?
I know it will remove yeti duracoat. For the towel, I usually use amzn.to/3Sa1Lc4
Would this technique also work to dissolve epoxy from a tumbler?
That’s a great question. I’m not sure. I’ve only powder coated. I never went the resin route so I haven’t had a chance to try it.
Are the laser marks of the etched logo visible at all after? Or does it have to be coated to hide the old laser marks. Am looking to strip a yeti to stainless and keep it that way
I suppose it depends on the intensity of the lasered image. If it’s too hot it can leave a shadow image. I’ve never had that issue myself.
Do you think this technique could possibly be used to “etch” a design on duracoat?
That's a great question. I could always try, but based on the nature of a solvent, I think that it wouldn't give very sharp lines. It wouldn't want to just stop at an edge.
Will this work with the paint that Yeti comes with? I got a stainless waterbottle for free but don't love the color and just want naked Stainless Steel.
Yes. YETI will definitely work.
Do you think I could do the same thing to an Remington 870 receiver that’s duracoated?
Jordan Gosselin great question. If it’s duracoated then I don’t see why not. If it’s another coating like ceracote, it may not work.
Sweet, would this work on powder coat?
I don't think as well. I am about to do another video on something I hope will work.
Okay so I have a question can I this but with my welding hood asking because It is painted in blue but want to know if it is possible
I don’t think it would.
does this work for those 40 oz tumblers? if not do i just do two sessions of acetone or another chemical? Thank you for the video ❤❤
Any powder coated or duracoated tumblers should work.
How about for powder coat? Eastwood had a nice product called dekote that they no longer have. Any recommendations?
It’s a challenge now for sure. I think I may still have an option. I’ll hopefully be seeing the company this week at FabTech. I’ll let you know.
Remover 9000
great :)
Creative Maketools thanks for watching. I appreciate you taking a moment to comment.
What if it was powdercoating? Will it still work this way? Or is the powder and duracoat the same?
It’s not the same. I can’t get the powder to come off the same way.
Does this also work on Cerakote?
I can’t say for sure. I’ve not tried it.
I am going to have to try this. I see a lot of the Easter egg cups for sale but don’t like the colors. Now I can remove the color. Have you used MEK?
Jk Canvas I haven’t. I have a. Half gallon, but haven’t tried it.
ManCraftingTM be sure to be well ventilated because you will see some crazy things.
ManCraftingTM I used it to clean paint off aircraft and clean my paint guns. Works great.
Jk Canvas I’ll do that outside. MEK is way more volatile. Probably why I didn’t try it first. And the ugly colors are abundant. Good way to get some cheap stock.
ManCraftingTM I will try the MEK trick and let you know. I will reference this video when I do.
Anyone try lacquer thinner for this? I don't have straight acetone, but I have plenty lacquer thinner. If not, I can always go get some acetone.
I haven’t.
Will this work with the 'factory coating'?? I was gifted an Rtic tumbler in a black finish that I don't like.....
I’m pretty certain it will work with rtic. All of these were factory Coatings.
Okay, thanks for the reply I will certainly have to give this a try...
xman870096 if I try it first I’ll let you know.
Could you just leave the cup totally bare after removing the duracoating, or do you need to seal it to keep it from rusting or anything? I have an ugly little coffee cup that would look so much better silver than the burnt salmon color it is now. Thanks!!
It’s stainless steel. I have a ton of them naked. I’ve even sandblasted logos onto them and 5 years later they look great.
They make a darkening compound too that's meant for this very thing, that would let you laser a dark logo onto the stainless rather than engraving through the coating and having a stainless logo.
You did a video more recently with a special stripper. It’s more expensive and less easily purchased. Isn’t acetone better?
Acetone is more readily available. If you only have an occasional mess up it may be a perfect option for you. If you’re doing a lot of volume and have a lot of mistakes to strip. Then it’s cheaper and easier to go with the powdercoat stripper.
Do you know of a service that will duracoat or cover a new Yeti?
I do not. Are you starting with a stainless tumbler? Lots of people will powdercoat. Similar process.
Will this work on the original paint on a yeti bottle too?
It does.
Would that work for Cerrocote(sp?)?
I don't think so.
Very cool. Does this take off your powder coating the same way? Just so i dont mess up the fantastic cup you sent me
Harneal Media I don’t think so, but I’ll do a test to be sure.
Harneal Media - I've been using a product called 'Tuff-Strip' from Crown. Got it at a local Home Depot/Lowes. It's pretty harsh so wear gloves/mask. I tried uploading a pic but i guess i can't in the comment section.
Kaleb McCarrell Thanks. I’ll check it out. Best thing I’ve found is Benco B-17 but it’s not that easy to find, it’s in bulk packaging and expensive. I’ve also used airplane stripper. That’s pretty good as well.
ManCraftingTM - thanks! I'll look it up. And thanks for all the awesome videos, I always look fwd to watching the little gold nuggets of info!
Thank you as well.
Will this work on a duracoated Glock slide or will it take the factory finish off too?
That’s a good question. Was the original finish duracoated over? Usually the original finish is at a minimum abrased.
@@ManCrafting I peeled a lot of the duracoat off with my fingernail and I can tell the slide wasn’t prepped or sanded before the duracoat was applied bc the slide finish is flawless underneath the duracoat, so I’m guessing I can try this method to get the rest off without damaging the original slide finish
Anyone wonder why companies put paint on stainless steel cups in the first place? They know the paint will flake off and look like crap.
Will this work for the coating that’s on yeti products?
It will.
@@ManCrafting Will lacquer thinner work you think? I have extra of that right now.
Will this work on a yeti cup?
Definitely
My water bottle feels like it has a rubber coating. Will this work for me?
Not sure. I suppose there is only one way to know.
Would this work on polymer?
I'm not sure.
i duracoated a rifle i want to change the color. maybe ill give this a shot thx
Jimmy Kimber let me know how that works out. I’m interested as well.
was that a regular sand paper
I was using essentially an embry file. Something people use on their nails. Pretty sure I added a link to them in the description. If not let me know and I’ll track them down.
I have a duracoated cup from my fire department. Our logo is cut out on the front & my name on the back EXCEPT the wrong name is on mine 😕. Can it be filled in without destroying the logo on front?
Tough question. There’s no way to fill it in so it looks like the name was never there.
@@ManCrafting ahh.. okay.I kinda thought that might be the case. thank you!
Will this work on a yeti?
Absolutely.
What about removing powder coated mistakes?
It doesn’t do as well on powdercoating. I have another video on removing powdercoating. It was sometime in 2020.
Would this work with powder coat also?
Tristan Lopez I don’t think so. I’ll do a yeast and let you know.
I have found that acetone works on powder coat if it isn't cured (problem pulling vinyl for instance and stop after it has flowed). Once it is fully cured acetone did not work for me. Although I never wrapped it and left to soak. What has worked for me on cured powder coat is Rust-Oleum AircrAft Remover (the gel not the aerosol spray). spread some of it on and wait ten minutes and the paint comes right off.

DarcShadow thanks. It’s definitely caustic and something I don’t really enjoy messing with. But it works.
Will this work on yeti mugs? The coating on the handle of mine always start chipping and flaking off.
Absolutely.
Does this work on Duracoat used on firearms or is that a different product?
It should do the exact same thing. So if you want to strip it, it will, if you don't want it damaged don't use it for cleaning.
Did it work or firearms?
@@schopout9874 Yes it did.
@@schopout9874 I should add that the chemical just released the bond between the paint and the steel by turning the paint into goo. It still took a wire wheel on an electric drill to scrape off the goo-ified Duracoat from every crevice in the slide and frame.
Since acetone is a hazardous chemical, would it be safe to drink from the cups?
When you wash the cup any acetone is removed. Most of it evaporates when exposed to air. It’s most hazardous when using. Keep in mind toxicity is related to dosage. No toxic dose, no toxic exposure.
try it on some 20yr old powder coat and it a different story.
Yea? Oldest I have is 7 years.
What if you want just a name off the cup
It would work, but it wouldn’t look that good imo.
Non acetone nail polish works just as well. And if you just keep rubbing it you don't have to scrub just keep rubbing it doesn't take 10 minutes.
Chad, why not grab yourself a 5 gallon tub with a lid, pour in a couple gallons of acetone. Put the cups inside, and put the lid on it. Acetone should be reusable, should not evaporate, and no waste of aluminum foil or shop towels. Much cleaner, and more environmentally friendly!
The only reason why I haven’t gone that route is the concern of the acetone penetrating between the cap and the cup. The seam has allowed water in on previous cups and recently on a cup I had stripped I didn’t get it all out and it ruined the finish on the powder I reposted with. I may do a test to see if that concern is founded though.
@@ManCrafting makes perfect sense to me. As long as you don't submerge the cup, it should be ok
Al Amantea I suppose I could put enough to soak rags or paper towels. Put the cup in upside down and drape a soaked rag or paper towel. That way it can’t deep into the seam.
Baked potato 🥔 😂
You could make it better by paying someone to do it. 😆
Of course. Or making someone else do it. That’s still making right?
That's not duracoat
Ok. There is apparently more than one type of duracoat since yeti advertises duracoat but it’s nothing like the duracoat on my pew pew.
