  • Want a powder coated Yeti cup, but don't want to pay $65 dollars? Get a Harbor Freight powder coating gun, a couple Ozark stainless steel cups and do it yourself instead!
    We got the powder coating system on sale for $50 and bought a few cups from Wal-mart. The results were impressive. With absolutely no experience we created something that I wouldn't hesitate to sell on Etsy. With a little practice you could become very proficient at this. Because the paint is so forgiving it's a very good beginner DIY project too.

    I regurlarly use the same gun... Ive found that the angle you hold the gun with respect to the ground has a huge impact on the powder output... better than adjusting the pressure even! holding it parallel gives the best finish but takes forever, and dropping the tip 60deg or so below the hopper gets you really cooking! throwing some sheet metal around the part and grounding it lets you collect and recycle the powder as well!

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV
      @MikeAndLaurenTV  7 лет назад +13

      Pro tips, thank you very much. I discovered the angle changed flow, but grounding scrap metal is genius!

      Maybe, Mike, instead of a box you could build a metal hood and then have something new to powder-coat! :)

    Great video. If you want to save yourself from buying too many electrical boxes you can wrap the majority of it in foil but keep a spot open for the ground. Then when you’re done you can simply take the foil off keeping the part mostly clean and free of powder.

    Hey guys, thanks for making and posting this video. I had so much fun watching it and Wow! I actually learned a new thing like what in the world is powder-coating. Seriously, I had never heard the term. I knew about the concept (painting on metal through an electric current), but now, thanks to you both, I know. I am curious to see just what they have in the way of powder-coating down here in Brazil. Hopefully (unlike most things here) it won't be too expensive.

      I think i talked to you briefly before. hehe. If you're getting into higher volume or maybe larger items (if you're the cup guy), you should look into finding a rebuilt commercial guns. still think the Gema's are nice but they are extremely pricey...or you could buy a car. haha.
      There isn't much that commonly goes wrong with them besides the cable and usual plastic wear pieces but the control you get on a professional system is in a different category.

    How you hold the gun and your air source (the drier the air and slightly higher pressure) helps powder delivery, and pulling the diffuser cone off the center wire allows you to direct it at the object better.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting 7 лет назад +1

      Shawna Kitchin I have several videos. The making part is pretty basic if you or know someone who can weld a grounding tab.

    • @shaunnapierccc4191
      @shaunnapierccc4191 7 лет назад +1

      I'd be interested in how well a metal one works out long term. I've used vices for welding if your ground is connected to the metal table and not the part it travels through the vice and arcs. After a little while it makes your vice jaws harder to move. I would think the same thing goes for the metal bearings on a lazy Susan. Just a thought.

    So, regarding the spots: Always degrease and handle with gloves until coating. And, yes, the multiple thin passes would give you a better result as the movement allows the particles to shuffle in closer together. I learned all this working for Alpha Tech in the late 90s and early 2000s as a Powder Coater.

      If you need something a little bigger than the toaster oven on it's side, I found a 110V smoker that will reach 400 degrees. It's the only one that seems to do that. All the rest only hit about 250.

    Im glad you made this, I have also been interested in powdercoating, if these are that cheap, I think I'll invest in one. I would also like to get a small sandblaster, do you have experience with that as well?

      No experience with sand blasting, but I really want one.

    Absolutely Awesome....I have been looking to do some powder coating and this was a sure WIN. Now I just need a larger oven...Any ideas?

      People throw out their old electric ovens (ranges) when they upgrade. I see them all the time with free signs on them on the side of the street. Check out junk yards too.
