I have been on the omnipod 5 for a couple months. I love it. Previously, I had the tandem tslim. My thoughts? The user interface and phone app and glucose tracking software is far superior on tslim. That being said, I love love love not having tubes, and I love not having to adjust basal rates. Another important feature is that omnipod is ok to go through airport scanners. That's great for people who travel. Also, the supplies needed to tote along are much less with omnipod. The syringe, infusion set, and pump are all contained in one little package. I broke my leg back in late March because I had a low blood sugar at 3:00 in the morning and collapsed while walking to get some food. I was in insulin pens, but I wrote my doctor and immediately told him to put me on a pump because he said it would help stop the 3:00 am lows and help prevent my spikes (every day for 6 months, I'd wake up with 358 or higher blood sugars). He recommended the Omnipod. Took me three months to get trained on it for some reason (then again, I did have a broken leg) but now that I'm on it, I love it. I've been on it a week now and already I can see my blood sugars evening out. The pod did not stop my 3:00 am crashes, but I learned to put my omnipod in Activity mode from 1-4, and at 4 it starts up again and prevents my spikes. It's so nice sleeping again and waking up with normal blood sugars.
I suffer from lows in the middle of the night as well. I know what you go thru waking up, sometimes so extreme you can’t even walk and you are basically a cripple. I haven’t used any of the dexcom devices in years, I’ve used the freestyle libre since the sensors always have been so slim and small, which I can set whatever reading to alert my iPhone to start screaming when it drops. I usually set it when it gets to 80mg/dl. Does the dexcom not cause a loud alert when it drops? I haven’t had an extreme low in years because it wakes me up instantly if I drop
I was diagnosed with T1 about 4 weeks ago, im 42 years old. This whole thing scares me, and doctors are already talking about pumps to me. My RUclips is now full of diabetes videos. I am so hopeful systems like this get approved in Australia. I’m already stressed enough and the automated mode sounds like a massive life changer.
hi there! aussie diabetic of 20 years, omnipod are approved on the NDSS, you just need health insurance to cover them, medibank or bupa is best. and the dexcom and libre cgms are subsidies too :) im about to get my pump and im going for the omnipod. my advice to someone who is newly diagnosed.. dont be too hard on yourself, its not a journey of good/bad or right/wrong, you have to be your bestfriend and just be patient, learn as you go.
@@RachLousie_ yes 👏🏼 I’m in Australia also lol I’ve been diabetic for 16 years but only getting on a pump in the next few weeks is insane. Im choosing tslim and dexcom g6 I wouldn’t even know the difference between the one his showing and the tslim
Greetings from Chicago, IL - USA. My daughter is comparing the Omnipod 5 to the Tandem T-Slim x2 and your videos are very helpful in helping her make a decision. At first she was leaning toward the Tandem, but after seeing this video especially about the algorithm and learning, she’s thinking now she wants to go with the Omnipod 5. We’ll keep learning … going to check out Meg’s videos now.
I stayed with the tslim because of the user interface, seamless integration with Dexcom, and now being able to bolus dose from my phone, eliminates carrying another device.
Thanks for these amazing videos on diabetes technology. As an adult type 1 diabetes physician and clinical researcher, my experience with the technology is very sterile and often limited from a personal experience standpoint. Your videos provide the necessary color to my experience, allowing me to provide better recommendations to patients. So far, the Omnipod 5 system has been positively received through my clinic, but there have been a few setbacks that several individuals have reported. Firstly, connectivity issues with the pods requiring pod changes: this isn't common, but when it happens, it can be very frustrating, since the pods cannot be recovered for continued use after a fatal disconnect. Secondly, several of my patients have reported issues with 0 basal delivery occurring during daytime and overnight use, without particular reason. This has occurred early on in the use of the system when first released, and I haven't appreciated any similar episodes within the last 4-6 months, but I'm still asking my patients about these events whenever they come in to see me, just in case. Adhesive issues are less common with the newer pods in my estimate, but phone charging issues while using the app (especially on older phone models) is a common issue, due to the processing requirement and the need to turn off battery optimization. I hope this helps others when considering this system over other artificial pancreas options, and I would love to hear your input on these particular issues as well. Thanks again. Joseph El Youssef.
@@sherylgoins4865 Currently, there are three closed-loop systems available for individuals with diabetes in the US. The Medtronic 670G/770G/780G systems (which now have the added bonus of a 7-day infusion set option), which uses Medtronic's own pump and sensor; the Tandem Control-IQ system, which uses the Tandem TslimX2 pump and the Dexcom G6/G7 sensors; and the Omnipod 5 system. All of these are currently Hybrid Closed-Loop (HCL) control systems, which means that users still need to input carbohydrates manually for meals to trigger a meal bolus. Fully Closed-Loop (FCL) control systems will, in the future, be able to predict meals and deliver the bolus automatically, completely removing any necessary input from human users.
I sure do think it would be beneficial to train people before leaving the hospital with a diagnosis and offer training at any time, regardless of insurance. I appreciate your time and am grateful for RUclips.
I’m not sure if it’s been put out on any official message board yet or not but I started omnipod yesterday and the lady who did the training class said they were working on making the 5 compatible with dexcom g7. This is my first pump after nine years of being turned down for a pump.

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get started with the Omnipod 5 and am having a few problems. First the current wait for their "training" is over a month out. That's miserable! I'm an an engineer (and have been a diabetic for close to 40 years primarily using MDI with a CGM) and feel I should be able to move forward on my own. I know in this video you stated that they didn't force users to complete their training, do you know if that's still true? It seems to be blocking me from setting up the app (Android) since I have to login to my Omnipod account first. I'm still working through this but just wondering if you know for sure if the current version will allow you to get going without completing their training. Appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks.
Thanks for the video! I have an iPhone so I’d have to use the controller. Does the controller always need to be near me or only when I need to make adjustments? Thanks.
I've used the Dexcom 6 for years now and almost consistently it acts wacky on day 9, losing signal frequently. How do you deal with that and the Omnipod 5?
The Omnipod 5 has hardware issues, in that it leaks insulin frequently on the 3rd day and to be honest I've been changing the settings and trying to let it "adapt its algorithm" for well over a month and I still often wake up with high blood sugar that's been riding in the low 200s all night. I'm frankly disappointed.
Hi my 9yo son is t1 diabetes. At 5:20 in the video you say switching device connected to omnipod throw away all learned pattern/data, and it sounds ridiculous. They don't offer anything like a cloud platform to preserve/sync data across the device for each individual?
I agree with you about the 670G, That's why I gave up on automatic mode and do well with manual mode. I am thinking about switching to another brand of pump. The Omnipod dose look big... Looks good too, thanks.
@@cubehire3653 I know what you mean about the omni-pod looking big. The size looks too large to be comfortable wearing. I may just wait for tandem's small-sized mobi before getting an omni-pod.
Hi, how does the omnipod 5 perform when exposed to the sun for hours? I visit alot of hot countries, carribean etc and it will be excised to the sun and heat alot. How does it cope? Any info much appreciated.......
Thank you so much for this - i have my omnipod 5 system sitting here ready and am just getting the courage to start it! I already have the dexcom 6 going - but last i tried to stop my Lantus to prep to start the pump i went into DKA:( - I've have had T1 for 38 years and have very erratic BS's bc of some of my other autoimmune disorders and treatments. I just needed this extra push of confidence - thank you so very much! Love your videos and channel ❤️
So the Omnipod itself makes all the dosing decisions as I understand it. And the Omnipod gets replaced with a new Omnipod every three days. So the "learning" algorithm part gets transmitted from the controller or smartphone to the new Omnipod just inserted apparently? That's what I'm thinking anyways. Also are there any reports that can be generated from the Omnipod that can be reviewed by yourself and your doctor? Informative video.
Great info! I started using the system in late June/ early July of last year. Still waiting on the iPhone app to be available, although there's a part of me that doesn't mind having a separate device. (If my phone gets stolen, I typically also have my meter with me, and can just use manual mode and still get insulin with the controller.)
@@lyricalman20 I asked the lady from Omnipod who trained me if they were going to get an iPhone app and she said they're having trouble getting it to adapt to Apple's priority software. She said it's going to be a while. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I just know what she told me.
What if the device isn't 100% accurate and it says you're low but you actually aren't?? So it will give you insulin that you actually don't need???? Trying to get info because my 9 year old was just diagnosed and is getting the G7 but as for the pump trying to see which one is better.
I am afraid of linking my pump to my CGM since it's sometimes way off, and too high. I would be afraid to get too much insulin. I don't mind having some control. And unfortunately, the 5 is in very limited availability.
If you live in the UK, you have to carry around another mobile device. There is no compatible app. I changed from Omni pod dash yesterday and my pod does not seem to recognise blood sugars going high or low. I have had to bolus neurmeous times already. Ham sandwich caused my blood sugar to jump to 15mmol/L hopefully it learns quickly.
Hey guys, I'm new to any insulin pumps altogether. I just placed my order for the omnipod 5 a few days ago but it has not arrived yet. Is the omni easy for someone that is inexperienced to pick up on? Any advise is greatly appreciated.
Can I use the Omnipod 5 controller to control Dexcom g6 and Omnipod 5 together? My cellphone is Motorola Moto g think it's not compatible with my pod and dexcom
Im trying to get my teen daughter into this as shes a new diabetic type 1 but shes scared its going to give her to much and shell have low Blood sugar numbers. Any tips? Also is there a carb ratio you hage to be on before you can get this?
You're holding an iPhone at one point, but seems Omnipod isn't compatible with any iOS devices... is there any secret workaround to get this working on an iPhone that you know about?
My 11 year old daughter uses the tslim x2 pump now and wants to get the omnipod. I have been reading reviews on this pump and I see that the pump only works with android phones and not iPhone is this true? Also the receiver I guess over heats about every 2 days and has to be reset as well, can you explain this to me and has this happened to anyone else? Another question as well, I was also told by her doctor that it takes longer for her blood glucose to go down if she is high, have you heard of this happening?
You change the entire thing every 3 days, which is typical for any pump. You also wouldn't want to keep the insulin right next to your body for a longer amount of time due to the temp increase.
@@Lilacleaf49065 That is factually incorrect. The reason you change the sites every 3 days is because the infusion site is destroying your skin - your body fights the plastic infusion set, and the constant infusion of insulin to the same area will cause scarring.
Here in the U.S. my wife just started on the Omnipod 5. this is the second video I watched to try to get an idea what she is going through. I welcome suggestions of other videos recommended for us significant others. Yesterday, she had two major, unexplainable spikes after eating and is very distressed. Also, she told me that it is incredibly burdensome to have to calculate and input carbs for what she plans to eat -- 30 minutes before eating. Any suggestions?
I use a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Dexcom does a poor job in keeping current with new Android devices and new versions of Android. What is the suggested Android APP to use with my new omnipod 5 to prevent me from carrying around 2 devices to keep up with my G6 and omnipod 5?
I love the idea of this. The medtronic 670g said the algorithm stuff as well and it was a nightmare. The word "algorithm" in connection with an insulin pump immediately scares me. The more control the pump had the worse the results became with the 670g. I hope this one is great but just afraid of algorithms still at this point. It requires a lifestyle that is super consistent. I do like that you can turn that feature off if you want to.
I've heard that the Omnipod 5 & Dexcom should be on the same side of body so the pump can "read" the CGM numbers. Notice Tom is wearing both on same arm in video, which looks uncomfortable to me !
I've tried both Omnipod and T-slim as well, and interestingly enough I found omnipod more obtrusive for day to day use. It's tubeless yes, but you have to wear a (imo) fairly large pod on your body, and for me at least it was slightly uncomfortable and also left marks in a way the t-slim didn't. I also found the algorithm on omnipod very frustrating and overly conservative in terms of allowing highs, but ymmv (I shoot for a 6.0 or below A1C). I also really disliked the forced 3-day timeout of the omnipod. Depends on your daily usage, but I can get 1-2 more days out of my t-slim which I appreciate greatly (no forced timeout). I felt like with omnipod I was always either coming off a change or worrying about my next one. All relatively minor things tbh but they added up for me.
Yes they are. I had to write a letter to them and chastise them for being so complacent when people's lives are on the line. Maybe staffing their whole building with type 1 diabetics would make a difference?🤨
How long does a pod last before needing replacement?? I have a 13 year old that doesn’t want to try it out because his old Omnipod only lasted like 3 days…
It is the same with all Omnipod models. But very important - if he wants to be able to pump long-term, he HAS to change ANY pump site by day 3. Wearing any pump longer than 3 days will cause lipotrophy and scar tissue to develop, which drastically affects absorption and the ability to use any insulin pump. So he should be diligent about changing by day 3 anyway. It's kind of one of the things I LIKE about Omnipod - it forces me to change on a regular schedule.
I just received mine in the mail. Have not went through the training with my doctor yet. But I was trying get everything setup. And can not find the IOS app. I prefer to not have to bring the device plus an iPhone everywhere I go.
Nice video, i wonder how long will it take to get to Portugal, for what i could understand it only works with that specific blood glucose metter and thats not an option in Portugal, so i guess unless it becomes compatible with freestyle libre it wont be accessable for at least a few years so its a nice think but i wont get to use it.... 😤😤😤😤
While I appreciate your reviews for the Omnipod 5 there are a few things to note. It is NOT compatible with an IPhone so you must carry 2 phones with you all the time. That was tough for me. The actual pump must be changed every 3 days. Just a heads up so no surprises. Good luck!
A video released by Abbott, said that the omnipod will work with freestyle 3. They started making them in the United States last month and should be available by December.
I’ve been using the omnipod since last Friday and I’m already on my third since it ran out of insulin a day early.. the new pod when breaking off the plastic tab shot insulin everywhere is that normal?
I have had a hard adjustment as the 5 forces 50/50 split basal to bolus. I eat low carb and do IF was told not to use automatic mode. So I have it but I use manual mode and manage myself.
Thanks for the video. After this video, I'm going to my doctor to get me one since I live in usa. Question: do I refill the pod or replace it? Also, how long the pump will last? Thanks
Omnipod application didn't let me sign in on my phone, so I've been using the PDM. The pain is starting with Dexcom PDM, then letting it talk with the Omnipod PDM (since phone applications are not working well for me).
Good day. I live in Poland. My friends can send me an Omnipod 5 starter kit from the United States. Is it possible to launch this starter kit while not in the States, or if this doesn't make sense? Thank you.
I really want an omnipod because i always give myself many shots EVERYDAY. I mostly give the shots on my legs and stomach, but it’s been for many years that i’ve been using the same exact spots, that my legs especially are starting to hurt and i think im getting nerve damage because of it. So it’s really bad and I definitely want an omnipod. Can’t take it anymore
How can you use the dexcome and Omnipod on your arms my doctors say thats a big no only ya belly if you over 18 and on your stomach and lower back if your younger that 18
My daughter's endo, who is a diabetic herself, said the arm is fine. As far as my daughter goes, the arm is usually her best site in terms of accuracy and no complications are concerned. The dexcom website lists it as the only other approved spot aside from the stomach for all patients over 2 years old (and above the butt for kids only). I'd suggest getting further clarification from your doctor after showing them the dexcom guidelines. Omnipod has more leniency with approved sites.
@@brabbit1692 I did speak to my endocrinologist Monday she only wants my dexcome on my stomach and the omnipod she lets me have it a lot more versatility but idk I am pregnant so maybe thats why I cant move the dexcom to my back of my arm!
@Herpes goddess No I havent Im 6 months pregnant at risk pregnancy so Im not interested in supplements right not because Ive been doing really good with my A1C and im not chancing nothing maybe after baby comes but ill rather just stick to my insulin that i knows works right now Thank you tho!
I had the same question when watching this video. In the U.S., it's definitely only available on specific Samsung phones. But I am using DIY Loop 3.0 which works with the Dash pods and allows me to control everything with my iPhone. It is amazing.

I usually set it when it gets to 80mg/dl. Does the dexcom not cause a loud alert when it drops? I haven’t had an extreme low in years because it wakes me up instantly if I drop
Does anyone have helpful tips on paying out of pocket for your pods? I am paying $567 monthly for 10 pods.
@@RachLousie_ yes 👏🏼 I’m in Australia also lol

What other artificial pancreas options are there?
I’ve been using OmniPod 5 for a week now and I love it. I came from Medtronic with Guardian 3. This is a HUGE upgrade.
Great to hear that. I am soo happy for you my friend! Thank you for all your support!
@@TypeOneTalks I'm in the need to start a pump in a short amount of time. My diabetes doctor only works with the medtronic 780 , but when i read the amount of problems on the facebook page , i'm not in a hurry to start it . I liked this design (tubeless) allot better. Thanks for the great videos !
@@bartdereu9267 Can you find a diabetes doctor who would refer you to a tandem or omni-pod rep? I can't believe a doctor would only let a person work with medtronic. Like you, I have heard the medtronic pumps are nowhere near as good as the other two company's products
This is a great idea as a type 1 diabetic myself I struggle with my suger as it is mostly high so trying to stay between 8 and 10 is difficult .. hope I can have this one day
Yes, I love Omnipod! Best sleep in over 20 years as a T1d! New sub. Love your channel, thank you! ❤
Hi Tom, I love your channel and have watched so many of your videos. I received my Omnipod 5 trial kit today and am so excited to finally try it. I love your detailed reviews and experiences. Very helpful! Your diabetic friend from Naples, Florida :))
FDA and USA approves libre q and libre 3 for insulin pump system delivery. There will be modified Liberty and libre sensors in the USA for the fact that it'll be compatible with insulin pump delivery systems. Just wanted to give heads up.
Thanks a lot ! Can't wait to have it soon in France !! Always great to see your productions ! !
Thank you so much!
Wow. The strides for type 1 diabetics are amazing.
They’re really not. It’s 2022, diabetes should’ve been cured by now, but it makes ‘big pharma’ too much money,
Yea fiiiiinallly!!
Sadly still waiting for this to be commercially available in the U.S rn , I've never had a pump, but want one now and this video helped thank you .
My son just got his omnipod 5 training date! Soooo excited! Hes pre teen so levels are all over the place. I hope this helps!
Super good video. Which insulin you guys use?
Great info! I started using the system in late June/ early July of last year. Still waiting on the iPhone app to be available, although there's a part of me that doesn't mind having a separate device. (If my phone gets stolen, I typically also have my meter with me, and can just use manual mode and still get insulin with the controller.)
They won’t ever release it for iOS they have a contract if android
@@lyricalman20 I asked the lady from Omnipod who trained me if they were going to get an iPhone app and she said they're having trouble getting it to adapt to Apple's priority software. She said it's going to be a while. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I just know what she told me.
What if the device isn't 100% accurate and it says you're low but you actually aren't?? So it will give you insulin that you actually don't need???? Trying to get info because my 9 year old was just diagnosed and is getting the G7 but as for the pump trying to see which one is better.
Omnipod is not yet approved to use with the G7, but should be soon. Must use G6 for now.
So I’m confused. Do you still enter how many carbs you’re eating at some point into any software?
I am afraid of linking my pump to my CGM since it's sometimes way off, and too high. I would be afraid to get too much insulin. I don't mind having some control. And unfortunately, the 5 is in very limited availability.
Would you recommend the tslim x2 or omnipod 5?
Is there a needle in this? Like how does it deliver the insulin to your body?
I'm getting my omnipod tomorrow. So I'm trying to learn about it
Can I use the Omnipod 5 controller to control Dexcom g6 and Omnipod 5 together? My cellphone is Motorola Moto g think it's not compatible with my pod and dexcom
Can you setup the target to be lower then 110 I like my target to be 90 Same question for auto correction can it be less then 150 ?
Do you have any idea when it will be available here in Switzerland? I don’t know if I should wait or get in the Roche/Diabeloop system…
Does that omnipod reveal the glucose on your blood too?
You show on the video it’s compatible with iPhone but on their site it says only android does it work with iphone
Do you have to put a new one on every 3 days then? Cannula and all? Or do you somehow unclip it to refill? 🤷🏼♂️
On the compatibility list, it says that iOS devices are yet to be supported, how are you using the app on an iPhone?
Good point. I’m not actually. Since I can’t buy in Switzerland yet I’m just using a demo app in the video to illustrate how things work.
@@TypeOneTalks that’s awesome thank you very much!
Is there a working app for iPhone? As far as I can see there is only a display app for the omnipod it doesn’t control anything.
So you still use a cgm? And which ones speak directly to the omnipod please? I currently use the libre 2
dexcom g6 only
Question - Placement of the G6 and Omnipod. Do they have to be next to each other? Can 1 go on say 1 am and the Pod on the other arm. Thanks
I've heard that the Omnipod 5 & Dexcom should be on the same side of body so the pump can "read" the CGM numbers. Notice Tom is wearing both on same arm in video, which looks uncomfortable to me !
Will the Omnipod 5 use insulin from my NovoLog FlexPen?
Is Omnipod 5 suitable for type 2 diabetes
You are the man!! Any idea when G7 will be compatible?
Two or three months from now
So are you using the omniPod or the t-slim at this point?
How did the omniPod handle the dawn phenomenon for you?
I wonder if a version of this pump could be made for testosterone delivery for low test males?
Are you kidding me this is the exact kind of pump I want but I only saw this video the day I get one
Apart from the fact that this pump is wireless, what are the other differences from this and the Medtronic 780g?
what is the cost of this insulin pump ? thanks
Has Omnipod 5 already supported by iPhone as well not only android?
I mean could it be started by iPhone.
I certainly wish Canada wasn't so far behind approving medical devices. They are in the dark ages here in Canada.
I'm so sorry my friend!
Actually it is the mfrs who see Canada as a small non influential market‼️(Even tho insulin was developed 5km from where I live in Toronto)
Yes they are. I had to write a letter to them and chastise them for being so complacent when people's lives are on the line. Maybe staffing their whole building with type 1 diabetics would make a difference?🤨
I hope you can get it soon
At least you have affordable health care. I’ll never be able to afford this. Even with my insurance it’s out of reach for me.
How long does a pod last before needing replacement?? I have a 13 year old that doesn’t want to try it out because his old Omnipod only lasted like 3 days…
This will be no different. As I understand it all pumps have the very same replacement frequency.
Does Omnipod 5 not have a food library, just got mine and cant find it and am pretty sad if it doesn't.
I just received mine in the mail. Have not went through the training with my doctor yet. But I was trying get everything setup. And can not find the IOS app. I prefer to not have to bring the device plus an iPhone everywhere I go.
I will they can allow us to change the target range. During the day I like mine to be around 5

Thanks
Thanks - is there a formal with Libre3 and OM5 ?
You didn't mention the most important bit !! How long does each pod last ?
Each pod lasts 3 days maximum
Why do these companies set the baseline target BGs so high? I really love everything about this pod but 6.1 mmol/L is too high.
I’ve been using the omnipod since last Friday and I’m already on my third since it ran out of insulin a day early.. the new pod when breaking off the plastic tab shot insulin everywhere is that normal?
A dribble is common. It shouldn't be gushing.
When it’s gonna be in belgium🇧🇪?
I have had a hard adjustment as the 5 forces 50/50 split basal to bolus. I eat low carb and do IF was told not to use automatic mode. So I have it but I use manual mode and manage myself.
So do u still have to count carbs with it
Thanks for the video. After this video, I'm going to my doctor to get me one since I live in usa. Question: do I refill the pod or replace it? Also, how long the pump will last? Thanks
I literally just got omnipod 5
Omnipod application didn't let me sign in on my phone, so I've been using the PDM. The pain is starting with Dexcom PDM, then letting it talk with the Omnipod PDM (since phone applications are not working well for me).
This is gonna be my first pump I'm so excited but also nervous because I dont know how I'm gonna make it work
How has it been? I have an Endo appointment tomorrow and I'm thinking about making the leap.
So this can be used without carrying around a pdm?
Well yes but to be able to control it/make any intervention/bolus you need the PDM or the phone. Hope this helps.

Wait, is that an iPhone? I thought it was only available on Samsung phones. Maybe its a USA thing. That's been the biggest hitch for me switching.
I had the same question when watching this video. In the U.S., it's definitely only available on specific Samsung phones. But I am using DIY Loop 3.0 which works with the Dash pods and allows me to control everything with my iPhone. It is amazing.
Its approved today in Australia.
Is it covered by ndss or Medicare?
Can we recharge this device battery through adaptor? ..Or we replace it with new device on every 3 day (72 hour) ?
replace, it's ~80 hours
Can’t wait until the fda approves this for type 2
I spoke with my endo today and she said I could get it.
You should be able to get it if the endo determines that your type2 treatment will do better with insulin is my guess
