Also something to note around Mighty Car Mods: we are normal guys and are not trained mechanics. We like to make interesting car mods and show you how we've gone about it, but we can't promise that anything we show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty doing it. Please be safe, be responsible and unless you know what you're doing, do not fool around with very serious machinery just because you've seen us make it look so easy. Talk to a qualified mechanic if you are in any doubt.

So, I watched episodes of MCM all day. Guess what, I got hungry, went and grabbed something to eat in the kitchen and thought to myself: _"Well, I could continue watching MCM while I eat."_
Yeah, well, of all the MCM episode in the world, I choose this one…
+Mach Tony Genius... :-/
+Mach Tony Here's a top tip, go to the iPad dash install instead, it's pure technology and soldering.
they forgot to jack up the car first.
BShoot so many people do!
jack up ya caahhh
Whoever suggested the urine... Was just taking the piss.
The fake vomit was too good. A+
KingCat LXIX He shot it :D
+Dani M now we have vomit shots too lol whats next?
Not even CGI could have beaten that....
I was eating breakfast while watching this video, then I arrived at the end of the video. THANKS GUYS !
I had similar problems with the headlights of my car. But one day I gave my car to my mechanic because I needed to change from winter tires to summer tires (because I didn't have the time to do it myself, and I'm lazy), the headlights annoyed him so he restored them without asking me, for free. My mechanic is cool.
Hope you gave him a good tip. Definitely a guy who takes care of his customers you got.
I realized he did it 2 days later. I went back later and gave him some chocolate and a bottle of wine
I wish I have a mechanic like that.
Just to prove that retro videos do not need to go "in the bin" Oh and the toothpaste and urine cleaned up my last relationship too....
Guacamolis Maximus
Cole Hart You i
2015 and still suggest this video to my friends :D
the only way that they are going to notice how old it really is , is by looking at moogs .. cap.. beanie .. thing on his head :D !
This show is time and time again so unbeatably thorough.
Just used the polish on my Civic's headlights, not expecting anything to happen, but it actually worked! They look amazing now. Thanks!
I've used the Turtle Wax brand kit, and it worked amazingly on 14 year old headlights that hadn't been properly treated before. I used the clarifying sealant on one side and over time, it helped keep it cleaner than the side without. The kit is ~$12 at walmart
Was watching a good headlight restoration video but then I spotted the MCM one as a suggestion. Simply had to click it because MCM will be better than any other video :D
@4jiggy1 Yes mate you can. And if you need more then use some fine sandpaper and you should get a great result.
Brasso metal polish works well also because the texture, used it on mine and getting paint of trim and glass while painting, you can also whipe Acetone on then use Brasso if there extreamly bad.
what about headlight fluid? :D
That's a Gavin Free joke
Oh my god yes
Jēkabs Milašs found in the store next to the Elbow Grease.
OMFG MAN YOU ARE A LEGEND
I've recently restored the headlights on my parents car using the method from Chemical Guys and looks great now. They also added another step to put a paint sealant on the headlights once you're done because the headlights have a clear coat and once you're done you've removed the clear coat. So putting a sealant on prevents them from oxidising again.
I got the Meguiar's One-Step Headlight Restoration kit, worked a treat, they look brand new.
Just used Car Polish on my S15's headlights (Auto Glym Super Resin Polish), and it worked brilliantly. My car's almost identical to Moog's old S15 (same colour, same parts of the Aero kit). Keep up the videos, guys.
After cleaning you need to apply protective layer or it will be smugde and foggy real soon
***** What do you recommend for a protective layer?
DIY stuff i dont know, but there is a bunch of products maybe even turtle wax has that stuff that adds protective(UV) layer...
idkwhtiam www.turtlewax.com/shop/products/turtle-wax-2-in-1-headlight-cleaner-sealant-9-fl-oz-
like this
Thank you kind sir
idkwhtiam or spend about 5 dollars on some plastidip smoke!! it looks sweet too, but make sure you use the glossifier otherwise it will come out matte!
Great vid guys, cant believe the improvement in looks just from that. The end was funny with the "vomit"
That looks amazing. I planned on doing this in the summer already, but now I'm really excited.
I've had good results with turtle wax (now armor-all brand) tire gel, with a cloth and a little time working it. seems to get grime off, fill micro cracks, add a slick layer while maybe restoring some silicone type oils into dried out plastics. used it on interior and exterior plastic the same way, dash, door panels, sun bleached bumpers etc.
Best era, best videos, thank you guys, you have been the best.
I tried the urine (just urine) but it made it worse. Out of anger, I drank the urine, and now my neighbors call me Bear. JK
I don't even need to restore my headlights, you guys are just so awesome.
As a tip, use carnauba wax as a sealant after cleaning them. I buff out a few layers and they look brand new for 2-3 months. I use a light compound/w mcguires scratch remover to clean my headlights btw
@KK155yo We are doing an HID install video. We already have the parts and will be shooting it in the next few weeks.
lmao you guys are the best. you get comedy, and you learn something, all in one!
@freshstylez22 We went and picked up the car ourselves in Japan and they brought it in and complied it for us so it was never for sale or sitting in the lot, so it must have been another one.
lmao that music after the urine when the avocado was on screen is the same music a japanese car show used in an ad that I kept on seeing on a trip over there recently. The show was called supercar two
You can also make them clearer by sanding them, yes sanding. You have to use very high grit like 8000 and it take a little bit of time and then you hand buff them and boom.
Fun fact: Did you know they sand the pilot windows of a PLANE with 10,000 grit sandpaper to make them super clear?!? Crazy, right!
I use plain toothpaste and it works just as good as the headlight restoration kit they use. Get a sponge, put some tooth paste on, scrub it on with some force, let it sit for a minute and wash it off. The urine thing is disgusting.
Hey mightycarmods, you know what works really well too? Cut & Polish in those small tins you can buy, it's abrasive but polishes the headlights as well, works excellent!
I found that really interesting with the avocado working as well as it did. Just wanna say you guys are really cool, and even though you have all those right hand drive cars with makes and models not found in America, I still find alot of relevance to your videos. Keep up the great work!
So, the cheapest way to make headlights clear again is avocado?
I've used WD40 Penetrating oil to clear up plastic bezels on motorcycle gauges, might work on headlights as well. Cool vid...surprised with the avocados effectiveness.
And now we know where the sponsorship deal came from
I bought the headlight restorer kit from supercheap auto and it works extremely well, I didn't even have to use the sanding pads. I do recommend going out and spending the 20 bucks
I also had this same sort of issue on my 9 year old Fiat: although, not even car polish was enough. If you've tried any of these methods (like I did) and they still don't work (yep, I tried the car polish), you can try wet-sanding the lights and then applying a medium cutting compound. And, it actually worked really well. It will damage your paint if you get it on it, so keep that in mind.
Thats why you take out the light before you work on it.
if you guys get a TV series i wont be suprised you guys are awesome!
it's 4 AM right now and I'm re-watching old episodes haha
one thing with this is that you need to use some sort of UV protectaint on the platic afterwards becuase ur sanding off the factory stuff, if u dont they will fade again in a few weeks. some marine products work for UV
I use straight toothpaste for the deep clean, followed by Brasso metal polish to get it shiny. Usually good for 8 months.
what grain sandpaper could i use ? sorry for my bad english !
Go over the scratch with a semi-coarse grit of sand paper (800 would be a good place to start). if that does not work you can use a coarser grit (no more than 320) but be sure to go over it different fine grit sandpapers efficiently remove the deep scratches in it. I usually go 320 to get the big mess out, 500 to clean up the 320, 800, 1000, then 1500. At the end be sure to finish it up with a nice polish. In case you're wondering i work as a detailer in an auto body shop. Hope this works :)
I just used the 3M Headlight Renew kit (I'm in the US). A basic tutorial would be to sand with 500 grit for 5-7 passes, sand with 800 grit for 5-7 passes, then wet sand with 3000 grit for 2 passes. Wipping between each change of grit.the only thing that can't be duplicated I believe is their protector and polisher which is included int he $27 dollar kit. Gotta say it workek great though, idk how long it will last.
If you have and orbital polisher the polish and a little HIGH grit sand paper works wonders also if you get your car painted you can ask the body shop to do this for you and they wont have a problem with doing it
Try the Mothers Powerball 4Lights Headlight Restoration Kit. My '97 Mercury Mystique had the really yellowed headlights, which made it look like crap. About 20 min. of work and the headlights looked brand new. Everyone thought I had replaced them.
I bought a headlight restoration kit from ebay. it had sandpaper and polish. It worked good
Hey, don't you need to apply some kind of clear coat afterwards to prevent damage? I've heard that usually these come with a protective layer that you remove while polishing.
can i just say I too have a white s15, adm spec however. love the work with the headlights (doing it myself tomorrow with the PROPER CLEANER), but really can't wait to see what else you have planned for the car =]
The polish worked great on my toyota soarer headlights!
what if you had done the restoration, and you still have amoeba looking yellow spots? the other areas are shiny and overall the surface is smooth. could there be also damage inside the shield? and if its not inside, am i doing something wrong? if it is indeed in the inside, what can I do?
If you're saying to use the compound after sanding as I outlined then I agree. I've used the compound by itself and it does not work very well. Sanding with a drill is the most important steps.
wich sand paper number did you use on this??? thanks!
I know this is an old video but, has anyone ever used the restoration kit on the inside of the lens? I just bought a car that has a lot of crap on the inside and I am thinking of removing the lens and trying it on the inside. Please let me know. Thanks!
yep... Saturday morning planned. Good one guys - subbed
Fantastic as always guys.
What a great vid. So entertaining, and educational too! Well done boys! :D
i got a question what if you need in later time to remove the splash shield?
so i used the headlight restoration kit and it worked great on my right side headlight, but it didnt do shit to my left side headlight. Is there any other reasons why my headlight could be foggy?
@bennermetals We've done it on 4 cars now. Turned out amazing every time as seen in our video. They don't pay us so we are impartial.
This show is quality! Do you guys have Ford Escort RS turbos and Cosworths in Australia?
Will the purpose-made product work on taillights too?
i have long scratch mark on my car headlight. is there anything i can do to get of the scratch mark?
I,ve tried a couple of the purpose made products to figure out which one we should carry at our pennzoil place and found that of the prupose made products there are 2 main kinds. a single step like mothers or the turtle wax, and multi step kinds which have 3 main steps a removal, a cleaning and a spray on light clearcoat. obviously the multi step takes longer but IMO its completely worth it
You'll need to add a UV protectant of some sort, either a UV polish or UV clear coat, to protect the lens. If not added, the lens may fog over quickly.
I get the best results from wet sanding with 1500 then 2000 them 2500. Buff the headlights with a rubbing compound from 3m.
And I do this for free when I see someone's headlight that needs work.
I used whiting toothpaste, some old fine grit sandpaper and water also got a fantastic as new result on my bmw e46 :-) cheers guys
@mightyjet777 it would work. but on tail lights, you can actually use some sandpaper. start with 500grit, and go up to 2000 or so eventually, wet sanding. then use some harsh polishing compound, and then a mild one. itll work just fine.
@mightycarmods
what is the first song in the beginning (NOT the introduction song)
my supras headlights have gone yellow on the inside. you can buy glass headlights but i dont really want to. sooo, any suggestions?
I miss these episodes
Try Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish. Fast and most efective to restore headlight. Then use Maguier X or any UV clear coat for protection.
Bloody good stuff guys, made me piss myself laughing too. Thumbs up from Mike in the UK
I just start off by wet sanding the headlight with 2000 grit sandpaper and plenty of water. Then step up to 3000 grit and finish off with 5000 grit. Works great. Then if you want then really clean use a bit of rubbing compound and buff them out perfect.
make sure you use the plastix compound that they sell at az or pepboys, and use that everytime you wash your car, and buff it with that stuff it will keep it looking good.
The other day I was adding oil to my car and I was taking my funnel out and got a drip on the headlight and honestly didn't feel like wiping it off cause I was in a rush to get to work but I noticed later in the day that the same spot it dripped on was WAY clearer than the cloudyness. So some old used oil or new oil could be a trick to use. Seemed to be able to work.
I've always used Mothers aluminum polish on my headlights. Then took some really high grit sandpaper, and sanded them a small amount, then took a little more polish over them after I sanded them. Same deal as the kit, just 1/10th the price. And the small can of polish will 'prolly last you a while too. It don't take much.
wow that looks great! but what do i do about the little big of smoggy smeary stuff on the inside of the lense?
I love the air hose sounds at the end. LOL
love how this came up when i was thinking about how to do a headlight restore to my truck
what did you use to trow up
Transmission fluid works really good too
I've tried cleaning with a few different substances. Some work for only a week or so, then start going back to how it used to be. I assume this is because it acts in keeping it oily or moist, then as the stuff comes off the headlight it goes back to its original state. You should really be testing the outcomes over a week or two, to see which lasts the longest - which actually does the job!
I've used toothpaste (not mixed with anything) on my indicators. I think it's less abrasive than polish, so it should give a better result but requiring more work.
@mightycarmods Could you comment on the legalities of this too please during the video. HID's require a dedicated + line from the battery correct? Cheers.
when you guys get the chance and the funds a vid about choosing and installing a sound system would be really cool.
I did this yesterday with a turtle wax restoration, and while I can definitely feel the difference I can't really see the difference. It's very easy to see that there is a nice layer of foggy gunk on the inside of the lens, what would you guys do?
I found a super cheap way of cleaning headlights. There are these sponge type things called dr magic sunday that I bought from a cheap shop for $2. I scrubbed with them for about 15 minutes and the difference was night and day. To clean even more I put soap and sugar on the sponge to act as an abrasive
haha. excellent show as usual. man you sold your gti? s15 was an excellent choice for an upgrade : D
I tried the toothpaste one of my R33 light and it worked... Kind of... So then I got a purpose made one and it worked a treat! Mad!
Actual way to restore permanently:
clean
sand with 400 grit wet paper
600 grit wet paper
clean with alcohol
2000 grit wet paper
clean with alcohol
spray on clear UV-resistant non yellowing paint as light base coat
spray slightly more generously
Ta-Da, thank me later for this permanent restoration
GenericTulip there is no permanent solution. the lights will eventually fog up in 2-4 years even with a ppg 2 part clear coat.
thanks for bringing chrisfix to a comment
@curtos69 It is for metal, but it's been used on aircraft windows dating back to WWII - when plastic wasn't used - but it is still used to this day. It works great. Try it. If you don't believe me, take some to the junkyard and try it on an old headlight first.
can anyone tell me what rim size are those fitted on the car? and what type of car it is
Nissan Silvia S15 and the rims look like 17's
@mykiP20 The one that worked the best was the wet sanding pad that came with the restoration kit.
i have repaired many head lights by just simply cleaning them then hitting it with a little clear coat and it works and looks great but not too much it will turn white just a light brush from the spray can
Can't find this Headlight Cleaning stuff at any Repco/Supercheap etc anywhere!
you can just use 220 grid sand paper go in a circular motion on the light with plenty of water and then clear coat it, like spray paint kind, it should come out to be around 10 bucks or less, you can use the pack of sand paper about 3 or 4 times and the clear paint should last for about 5 or 6 times for both lights... it makes your lights look brand new and it holds the look for a long time...
i'm pretty sure his referring to how they were released in aus s14,s15 are silvias but weren't released as silvia they were released as 200sx s14, 200sx s15 & in the states 240sx for example, the only one released as silvia was the s13 but unless you got it imported from japan it then came with the silvia badges (s15)s,, s12? we never got that i guess your reffering to the 180sx? the hatchback couple with the roll up headlights?
Does the headlight polish work on tail lights as well?
