Have watched this match with Onita and Terry Funk . This put hardcore Death Match Wrestling on the map and was a great match to watch . Have it on both VHS and DVD Onita was a pioneer and a legend in this match . RIP to Terry Funk .

Watching one of the many shows during this past Wrestlemania weekend, and found out the referee in the Onita vs. Funk explosion match was none other than legendary wrestler, Dragon Kid. If true, that's one unique way to break into the business IMO.
I knew Kid was a referee in FMW, but I didn't knew he reffed this match.

Otani's a very funny, well-spoken guy outside the ring. So much so that he became a congressman after he retired from pro-wrestling. He started at All Japan Pro as assistant to legendary Giant Baba. And he recalled that one his daily duties was everytime Baba took a shite he had to go afterwards to crush the dung because it was so big it wouldn't go down in one flush haha. Years later he bumped into his old master and he tried to recruit Baba to his deathmatch. According to him it went like, Baba: "That thing, isn't it painful?" Otani: "I promise Baba-san, it's not gonna hurt!" And after thinking a bit Baba went "Nahhh I pass." Otani: "Why?" Baba: "Because I'm rich. That's why."

Anyone part of the original ECW when it changed from Eastern to Extreme will be the first to tell you FMW was a massive inspiration.

Japanese have always been on another level when it comes to deathmatch wrestling.
Jun Kasai from Freedoms is one of the current biggest names. There’s too many matches to pick as a example like his recent match against Nick Gage in GCW earlier this year

Of that was more than likely tv producers saying hey no we can’t do xyz. Sadly. One reason why wwe has never had a single death match and they’ve been around for 4 decades. Hell, it’s hard to even get a street fight on wwe tv. I’ll give all the aew haters that, that match sucked. But what’s done in vain can be redeemed through fighting spirit and that’s something AEW has. They don’t give up.
And then AEW made “exploding ring matches” an embarrassment.

TBF, I heard stories that Eastern Championship Wrestling tried to do one, much to the same results as the ever popular Cactus Jack vs. Terry Funk exploding barb wire match in IWA (as in nobody got to see the "Earth shattering kaboom" in the end). In AEW and ECW's case, depending on if the Fire Marshall was in the building, maybe not having the large explosion and huge amounts of disappointment was probably for the best. Not saying the dud was planned, but compared to the lawsuits, if even a couple of ringside fans were singed from the resulting explosion, that could have been disastrous for the company.
And Tony the Snowman often says "GREAT" while high on the snow he snorted and Plumber Moxley said that Harpo Fingerbang is a "tough SOB" but couldn't put an exploding deathmatch the shits. No wonder why the abbreviation of AEW is "Absolutely Embarrassing Wrestling".

Aew literally copied this exact angle of his opponent coming back in the ring to save him. Which is fine, angles have been recycled so many times, but Aew just did an embarrassing job at it.
