creating a simple tactic just to generate the passing chart to show the differences between the CM-Su and CAR is the kind of stuff that makes your videos so good
I forget which video it was, but those passing charts can help me sometimes too. I think I assumed a role had certain movement or something and when I looked at the chart, I thought "oh maybe I need to research this role more since it's not doing what I thought it would"
Another gem of a video! The combo Carrilero-Mezzala was incredibly popular in Brazil in the 90s. Normally teams played a 4-3-1-2 or a diamond like your tactic, using a Anchor/BWM as a defensive midfielder and a Enganche/Advanced Playmaker/Trequartista/Shadow Striker in the AMC slot. Even Brazil's National Team played like that in 99-01, before the 2002 World Cup.
You use the carrilero cause it fits you tactical preferences, I use it cause the game shortens it to car and I like to go beep beep when they score- We are not the same 😎
I just wanted to say thank you. I’ve played for a couple years and this is the first time that I’ve made my own tactics. I’ve learned a ton about the different roles and how they work with each other. I never would have even considered a carrilero as I didn’t really understand the role. But, after watching this, it fits perfectly into the 433 I’ve been developing. I had a clogging issue on the left and switching from a central mid to this solved the issue. Thanks again.
@@tewulf4094nah trust me this is exactly Henderson. Often for Liverpool he would overlap Trent and Salah allowing them space to invert. And Hendo always covered Trent
Modric played this role in 2022 UCL Final, tripling up the right flank with Carvajal and Valverde, sometimes even with Casemiro joining. Because Liverpool at that time had deadly overload of Mane, Diaz and Robertson, with Thiago occassionally joining. Genius from Ancelotti.
Absolutely love your video, thoroughly explained with clips, the hardcode tip is also very useful. I've just been playing around with the Carrilero and I have to say it is a very very underrated role, it can act like a playmaker that drops deep and wide to support flank play, but at the same time drifting around and providing outlet. The carrilero will always make himself available- a really good midfield supporting role in my opinion.
The creativity aspect is what surprised me. Plus, only having that one hardcoded player instruction means it gives the player a lot of freedom so the carrilero could turn into more of a ball winner or more of a playmaker depending on your player and their traits
Thank you very much for the video 😃 The difference in the player movement between the hard coded player instructions vs. the instruction that can be added was new to me 👍🏻😊 You explained the role very good. Thank you very much for your excellent work 🥳🍻😎

So good, thank you for doing them and please keep it up as your content is the best out there at the moment and I genuinely look forward to the next video each time and click YT hoping there will be one or expecting if it’s been a couple of days 😁
finally someone explained this clearly. the comparison with CM with stay wider was amazing. by the way, my main save now is with cambuur (smit is one of the few players that remained from the original squad). my tactics use two mezzalas, but will try turning one into a carrilero to have more passing options outside the box
No kidding?? Cambuur has my absolute favorite player in FM with Roberts Uldrikis. He is an absolute beast; always try to sign him if I use other clubs haha. And Smit was incredible; one of the top players for the squad. I like the mezzala and carrilero; and if you do try it out in your tactic, you shouldn't have to do much to your tactic to implement it
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker yep, Uldrikis is like a Jan Koller. but I had to sell him at the second season, since he was the only commercially profitable player in my squad (and also to allow Smit to develop, since I play with a single striker). I tried using the CAR in an away match, worked fine. it's a good option to get a bit more assymetrical
I like this video a lot. If you are looking to focus on wing play and play something like a 5-2-3 two Carrileros can work well as a mid field pair, despite the game saying that they're usually used in a three man midfield. They will cover the central areas and support the wings. So, if you don't want to use or don't have a Volante, give them a try.
Great Video as usual mate :) especially the comparisson between the Mezzala and the CAR. I always must smile if people say that the Mezala is so awesome but the CAR sucks while they are basicly the the same just a bit more defensive. one "must have" player trait at a CAR is "play 1-2 passes". Thats like steroids for any role that cuts inside.
Heck I'd almost agree with the argument that a Carrilero is better than the Mezzala. Does more in defense, is still a creative role, and provides plenty in the final third while managing to not get in the way of more forward players
i often use mezzeala/support in my tactic in my current save, I was thinking about changing it to carrilero, but I never used that role and was not sure how it would work. After seeing this video, I'll definitely give it a go!
that's perfect! exactly what these videos are for. A Carrilero is perfect when you want someone in a similar vein as a Mezzala, but more defense/support focused
thank you! The good news is that the half back is on the way! The bad news is that it's still maybe a few weeks out (hopefully that's not too bad of news haha).
I used to play with a DLP as DM, a carrilero and a mez-A as my midfield. The carrilero on the left side with an OWB-A and a IF-A and the right side was the mez-A with an IWB-S and a winger-S. This gave me two different kinds of triangles that worked well against different opponent tactics.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymakerI started out with a pressing forward on attack and it worked well to get Farnborough up from vanarama south to league one in four seasons. The most success however has been with a target forward. Played with Supersport from South Africa and had an undefeated season and the striker had more goals + assist than he played games. I have sadly enough not been able to repeat this with another target player though, so maybe he was just on fire that season and he retired after it. I believe it should work well with a F9 or DLF as well. Just someone to drop down a bit and cover the area in front of the centre backs and let the mez and IF go deep
Was my favourite midfield role in FM22. Collapsed diamond midfield - Flying wingbacks, a DLP in DM, Central midfielder on attack with double carrileros. 2 strikers. Weirdly enough a very similar tactic popped up at 6:00 lol
TBH, at first I loved the Carrilero role, but as a shuttler with more lateral movement, a simple winger or any wide player in the opponent's tactic will force Carrileros out of position, creating gaps in the midfield. That's basically the reason why they need a VMC to support them. High stamina, teamwork, and work rate are really recommended for this role. But they can be fun in a more structured system. They will close down the half-spaces, making them a perfect counter against Mezzalas. In any narrow tactic, they will shine more than in a team instructed to play wider, as they will offer width with lateral movements. In wider formations, other player roles overshadow them, and they become less useful. Since space is created by staying wide, you want vertical movement in your central midfield to benefit from the width. In my previous save most of the times I end up buying Cesare Bovo from AS Roma for this role, and switch him up to a box to box midfielder depending on the opposition when vertical movement is needed.
Would you switch Bovo from Carrilero at all during the match, depending on what the opponent was doing? Or more strictly match to match? The one thing I like about a B2B in comparison is I don't strictly have to build part of the tactic around him. Like in a 433, 442, whatever, I can plug him in without worrying about who's covering the central areas of the midfield in attack. Whereas a Carrilero I can't use him in every single situation
Hi legend, would only switch before the match, during the match I run matchplans a lot. So when changing the role midgame the matchplan will be turned off. For the rest would only stay away from this role in max wide tactics. For the rest just a very good role. Remembered did in FM22, 2 Cars and a regista. to mimic the AC Milan days with va Bomel, Ambrosine plus Pirlo ♥
I love your content, very good, thank you for showing us the differences so we can create tactics in our own way with the functions we intend, I want more content like this in the next Fm25, congratulations on your work 🤌
I'm using a midfield 3 of Anchor/AP-A & Car trying to replicate Pep's Barcelona. Agreed, Xavi was more of a playmaker but since carrilero requires creativity too, you can expect a lot of goals and assists from him. If you have a very good player for the role, it actually becomes completely broken. I've been using Gavi, Joao Neves and Zaire-Emery and they perform crazy good, way better than any other role I've tried.. Also because the carrilero will generally (but not always) stay a bit wider he helps a lot with closing down opponents since I'm using a complete wing back on attack close to him.
You could see it in some of the highlights, but yea the Carrilero is definitely not just a defensive role. The cross he put it in this video (I think it was the second one?) was so perfect. Mezzala gets a lot of the reputation but this role has it's own stuff too
Such a great role EDIT: imo an engache works well with this role, perhaps even better than AM in a narrow formation. The vertical/horizontal combination makes recycling attacks and even progressing seamless at times
I've been messing with an engache on some stuff and I've really liked how it performs. Sometimes those AM can get a bad wrap. Thanks for the formation tips!
Back when it was added in FM18 (I think) it was referred to as the baby BBM, though the drifting wider is very different to the BBM's more vertical movement.
The baby BBM is a great nickname for it. They do have a lot of similarities, especially in defense. I always love a good industrious midfielder so they're A-Okay in my book lol
If running a 4-2-3-1 formation would it make sense to run a mezzala and a carrilero as the 2 midfielders? Current roles : IWB L CD IWB BBM CM IW AP IW CF
Hmmm, that's a good one. Generally you don't use those two together without a DM of some kind to shield the midfield. They're both going to be out wide, so nobody in the midfield area to provide cover. You've got the IWB to fill in that area, but the flanks would now be exposed since both IWB are in the center. What I would do is change one of your IWB to an inverted fullback, and change the libero to a more traditional centerback. This will give you more protection as you now have a back three defensive line when your IWB pushes up. But that's just one idea! You could get it to work, but it may take a bit of tactical adjustments
Another great video! So I watched this and you mentioned you had an old Arsenal save and showed you played Rice in the Carrilero role and Odegaard in the DLP (d) role. I'm playing as Arsenal at the moment so I copied this tactic and I'm not sure if it's the skin I'm using or not as I can't see this on your video but when I click on Rice it says unconvincing for this role and the same for Odegaard for his role. Saka for example at IW on attack shows he's accomplished in his role. Now I ignored the Rice and Odegaard messages and played my next match with everyone else in the positions you had. Granted it was against Sheffield Utd so not the best team but I won 7-1 lol. So my question is do you have those messages pop up advising a player is unconvincing in a role and you just ignore them as you feel the messages are wrong or do you think I just got lucky as it was Sheffield Utd? I get why you might play Odegaard at DLP but not sure of why in the defend role. Thought he would be wasted in the role and perhaps the AI does too. Edit - I should mention Rice got 7.1 rating, Odegaard got 6.9 and Saka got a 9.1 and a hatrick that game.
Thanks! As far as the tactic, I believe the screenshot may have been when we had completed the season, so Rice/Odegaard had a 50+ matches in those positions to become more familiar with them. That may explain the dsscrepancy. As for Odegaard, probably looking back I would use him as the AM in that 4231. An Attacking Midfielder, Advanced Playmaker, or maybe even a Trequartista. It was a pretty old tactic I'll admit haha. But I showed it because I love Rice as the Carrilero; he had scored a more than a few goals from outside the box. For the messages, I sometimes ignore them (for better or worse) but more so back in the day I did that. And thanks for bringing up those questions/points, I probably need to revisit that tactic and get it "up to date" so to speak. What was your shots/xG? If you had 7 goals with an xG of like 1.45, I would say you got lucky. But if it was like 2.5+ xG I would say it was deserved. Anyways, this was more words than I expected so I hope it helps haha.. I would say, with that specific tactic, use some of the stuff you like (maybe Saka as the IW) but definitely to be afraid to make changes that you want to see
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker my xg was 4.76 just checked, crazy really lol. And yes this video and all of yours have helped. Learnt alot watching them and currently watching 2-3 a day from the beginning to catch up. Keep up the good work!
on my 4-3-3 formation, my rw was IF(A) and my rb was IWB(S). so i need my rcm to support the IF on those wider areas and i think carrilero is the best option. but sometimes when the ball is on the left side, carrilero would stay in the middle and sometimes both carrilero and iwb bump into each other. do i need an instruction for carrilero to get further forward to fix it or that's actually not a big problem? Thankyou
There's two fixes or things to check out: the first is your team cohesion (it's in your team dynamics page). Sometimes, if you've just started a new save or you have new players, your team cohesion will be low. This can affect your player's positioning, so this may explain the problem. The other fix is to change the right back role to maybe a Full Back (S). The Full Back will stay out of the way of the Carrilero, who will still be able to interact with the Inside Forward. And you can for sure try the get further forward instructiob! As a heads up, this instruction may caues your Carrilero to get in the way of the Inside Forward. Hope this helps :)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker My team cohesion is very good. I was trying to make some changes in my 4-3-3 false 9 tactic and it seems the iwb and the carrilero on the same side make them always bump into each other😂. Yeah i think the fullback (s) or just switch the if(a) to the lw and the rw becomes winger on support so the carrilero on the left would work better. Thanks 🙏
Would a carrilero be better than a b2b for a 442 if I want his role to be drifting wider to help create another passing option with my fb and winger? My thought is that I already only have 2 midfielders so I’m down to completely abandon the middle when in possession and primarily transition down the wings. At the same time he wouldn’t be restricted exclusively to the side the way a cm-s on stay wider might be
I had gone with a b2b hoping for a late runner to follow up on second balls after a cross or blocked shot from one of my 2 strikers, but I’m half a season in and I’ve never had a goal like that so that’s why I’m reconsidering the role
I think it could work! The main issue is one you already realize is an issue, which means go for it! I always talk about give and take with tactics, so the fact that you realize you're giving up something in the midfield (with the Carrilero going wider than the B2B) by trying to take advantage of wing play means you're on the right track. You could also try maybe a Libero or Inverted Wingback to put some more players in the midfield And you're not really giving up much in defense; I kinda alluded to it in the video but the Carrilero and B2B are very similar in their defensive position so you're good there too. I would say watch maybe the first 20-30 of a match and see if it's functioning how you like
you know, I don't think I've used those three together. At least enough to make a decision on how they play... You should try them out and report back!
I always considered the carrillero as essentially a defensive mezzala and i usually used the role to secure the wing where i had more aggressive FB/WB. For me the biggest difference between carrillero and mezzala is that the latter moves mainly vertically, penetrating half-spaces in the final third, while the former moves laterally closer to the edge of that final third, helping with ball distribution.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker no it’s not in the video. In the personal instructions for the carrillero both the instructions dribble more and dribble less are disabled by default.

WCB please! Especially with an Attack Duty. And how to make them ovelap regularly in formations with Wingbacks on both flanks.
WCB is on the schedule! Shouldn't be too much longer. In the meantime, try using a WB, IF, and WCB. They create some really nice movements
The best at underlapping an attacking winger, imo.
great addition, I need to try that at some point
Diamond midfield: ballwinning DM; Box to Box; carriliero; engache 👍
If running a 4-2-3-1 formation would it make sense to run a mezzala and a carrilero as the 2 midfielders?
Current roles :
IWB L CD IWB
BBM CM
IW AP IW
CF
@@barfly14 wow, 4.76 is insane! I'm surprised you only scored 7 😂😂
And really glad the videos are helping out!
I know that the difference is in the half-space. But can CM(S) go out wide to support players in the wings?
The CM(S) won't really go out wide on their own; you could tell them to stay wider if you'd like some more support out there though
on my 4-3-3 formation, my rw was IF(A) and my rb was IWB(S). so i need my rcm to support the IF on those wider areas and i think carrilero is the best option. but sometimes when the ball is on the left side, carrilero would stay in the middle and sometimes both carrilero and iwb bump into each other. do i need an instruction for carrilero to get further forward to fix it or that's actually not a big problem?
Thanks 🙏
Hit the thumbs up then tell how nice the video is and finally watch the video. Why? Because we have no doubt 👌😁
thank you for the support!!
You could also try maybe a Libero or Inverted Wingback to put some more players in the midfield
And you're not really giving up much in defense; I kinda alluded to it in the video but the Carrilero and B2B are very similar in their defensive position so you're good there too. I would say watch maybe the first 20-30 of a match and see if it's functioning how you like
Easier to understand. If mezzala is half winger, carrilero is half wingback
Would carrilero + wide midfielder + false9 combine nicely?
you know, I don't think I've used those three together. At least enough to make a decision on how they play... You should try them out and report back!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker I tend to use them in 3412 gasperini inspired style but more possession oriented, sometimes work sometimes not
I always considered the carrillero as essentially a defensive mezzala and i usually used the role to secure the wing where i had more aggressive FB/WB. For me the biggest difference between carrillero and mezzala is that the latter moves mainly vertically, penetrating half-spaces in the final third, while the former moves laterally closer to the edge of that final third, helping with ball distribution.
Definitely. I love being able to use it for that WB cover
What does it mean that he has dribble more and dribble less both disabled?
Do you have a time stamp on where it happens in the video? I'll double check it and see what the issue is. Thanks!
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker no it’s not in the video. In the personal instructions for the carrillero both the instructions dribble more and dribble less are disabled by default.
