Thanks for the great response everyone and kind words. The feedback my end has been very cool. I've had calls from some Ford heroes of yesteryear who are happy to see the Phase 5 / 6 legacy live on.
Awesome to see Rob - such a great Legacy, kept alive. There are so many GRP C builds coming out of the woodwork these days. Glad to be part of those builds! Thanks for all you have done for my build, especially at the same time as your major accident. For those uninitiated, please dont confuse yourself with GTHO JG33 cars cf the day. The XE Phase 6 is named only as a 'what could of been' if Ford kept going with the "Phase' naming. Lucky for us - Wayne kept it going "under the cover of darkness" - Rob Draper.
A legacy that is continued and admired to this very day.your father had the foresight, drive and enthusiasm to see that the "BLUE OVAL"would not lanquise and fade into motorsport obscurity .a great man, gone but certainly never forgotten.
Your dad was a ford legend and a man of passion. I remember the phase 5 XD in modern motor mag, gave a 12 y.o ford fan something to cheer. Looking forward to your show
Glad to have known your father when we studied Industrial Design together at RMIT. Still fondly remember a great trip we made to to Sydney in his R series Valiant.
Rob and all the crew that built this Phase 6, what a team effort. Your Dad Wayne, must have been as pleased as punch to see it completed in all her glory. I have an XE Fairmint Ghia and love driving her just as you are with this beauty. Looking forward to seeing the tv series.
I have this as a screensaver it is just absolutely epic If I had the money I would just love to build one Nothing is greater than the xe with that body kit 😍😍😍😍
Nice looking XE , I remember Bill Bourke, and to inherit the HO naming rights from your father is awesome. I'm a big fan of the GT HO CAR'S OF THE 70's.
The XE and even more so the XD were very very similar to the Mk2 Ford Granada which was a brilliant car in the UK and Europe. My dad always wanted one and they migrated to Australia and bought an EFI 4.1 XE. We both loved that car. The Falcon XD has the same front lights as the Granada and the Falcon's have a lower waistband. The Granada is also amazing, I had a few uncles who own both the Mk1 and Mk2
Now thats a wrap..how fuckin awesome, Iam a Holden guy...but this whole spiritual story, whoa, and that Big Falcon Phase 6 HO..good on you ,Wayne, love ya work....
WOW!! Came across this story by chance, and being a Ford fan, it pulled at the heart strings at what a story of a man i knew nothing about that was super passionate about the Ford legacy even in his last days, and the continuation of his legacy by his son. Brilliant story.
Under FIA rules (Back then FISA) which the Australian racing ruling body The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport was bound to, a touring car could not be homologated for racing unless it was endorsed by an automotive manufacturer with its own manufacturing compliance plates. Ford Australia refused to have anything to do with homologating the XD, so Draper got around that by homologating the XD Falcon for racing through his joint ownership of ‘Phase Autos Pty Ltd’. Being a vehicle ‘manufacturer’ with its own compliance plates, Phase Autos produced the minimum number (twenty five) of ‘XD Phase Five’ Falcon road cars required to homologate the XD for racing. These cars were fitted with fiberglass wheel arch flares, a front spoiler and a rear spoiler for the race cars. The body components were supplied to racing teams through "Murray Carter Motors". A rear spoiler was not approved for use by CAMS for the XD until mid 1980 just in time for Bathurst, but it would not be the one originally submitted by Phase Autos. Murray Carter's name is on the CAMS application for homologation as the official supplier of the body parts for the race cars, and the XDs running gear homolgation was done seperately by Garry Willmington. Note that the original concept by Draper had box style wheel arch extensions similar to what was fitted to the Group A BMW M3, a roof mounted 'deflector' to channel air to the rear spoiler and 'splitter plates' on the front guards. CAMS accepted both homolgation applications as one car but rejected the splitter plates, the roof mounted deflector and rear spoiler. Here is a pic of the original phase 5 concept. i.imgur.com/EKngerL.jpg
In 1990 I went to the Broadmedaows Ford factory with school and said why did they drop the V8, they said the 6 is more efficient, I said the V8 is what makes ford different to BMW Merc etc. The rest is history.
Ford pulled out of racing in 1974 when it pulled the pin, had nothing to do Brock winning in 1979 ....nice XD by the way, thst is the most beautiful XD I have ever seen AMAZING 👏
A beautiful machine, wonderful job. That little detail of the XF wing mirrors behind the XE nose for some reason really lifts the look of the old warhorse. XF seating too, by the looks. I hope it comes fully equipped with a Pioneer tape deck with Crawl File jammed in it.
This car is the Aussie equivalent of the 80’s Mercedes Benz pre merger AMG 560 SEC wide body. The 80’s had many great tuners like Koenig Specials, Carat Duchatelet, ABC, etc.
Even if your not a ford follower what a awesome story...many years ago i owned a xe 6 pack.dead stock.wasnt fast but it drove nice and had great aircon..
There's a lad with a Phase 6 near me, I looked at it once taking a couple to their formal and I've seen him again... the bloody car is like candy, the stance is so sexy, the history on show.... great to know these phase 6's will live on. I'd love to see one hill climb with that rubber!
I do remember nobody wanted this XD’s and they square boxed ugliest back then but NOW they sure looks beautiful ❤ the Monza Red with a touch of F… loooks million dollars
Remember seeing them back in the 1980's, phase 5 and 6 ho, with body kits etc, ( But so many FAKES were also out there, put onto V8 XD/XE's and so many people got ripped off, because they only made so many and they had to come by companies which had the contract to make the phase 5/6's etc). Because ford did not want to make the v8 anymore because of fuel issue, they got rid of the v8 engine for a 4lt injected 6, yet holden stuck to the v8 thus selling more than ford and holden did have a 6 and 4's as well in the various engine combo's , had a VB SLE 5lt, then a VK Calais injected 6, even a XD 5.8lt Ghia & i hand painted the snowflake chia rims in gold and had the outer surface polished, and put the chrome giha caps on, they looked the mint, now i have the VF Redline.🚗🚗🚗🚗🙌🙌👌👌👍👍😎😎
Well said. Bob was the man on the ground who did most of the running around. He drove to every Ford dealer in Victoria and NSW plugging the Phase 5 to sell the 25.
@@RobDraper I think Bob was responsible for the fibreglass aero kit on the XC Cobras option 97 - 31 cars. Didn’t Wayne do an XD design with aero kit in the mid to late 70’s- as early as 1976?
Garry modified the heads. The big job was homologating the XD and selling the required amount of cars with a compliance plate. Not easy. That was Wayne Draper and Bob McWilliam (was going to be Moffat for a moment but as we know he bailed on Ford). My father had to remain invisible, since he was a Ford employee, because Ford insisted the XD not see the race track. They were adamant. Garry still has a letter from Edsel saying just that, "the Ford Falcon is not to see the race track". So while Ford had pulled financial support for motor racing before, it wasn't until 1979 that they pulled the Falcon (or tried to).
It's a real shame that Australia has lost our car manufacturers, like our GMH and Ford, who built Holden and Falcon and made sports cars out of them to race at Bathurst, I don't watch Bathurst any more because we don't have our Holden's and Falcons, I say shame on you Australian government for not supporting our Holdens and Falcons so that we could still have them
It's such a shame Pat. We just didn't want it enough. Was just chatting to an America who was telling me all his mates over there are after the Barra. We build world class car then turned our back on a world class brains trust.
Those headlights, did they have two spot globes in them or were they just one globe and the other was for looks, also the clear indicator lens were so hard to get, i think the ESP XD had them as well. :)🚗🚗🙌🙌👌👌👍👍😎😎
Thank you for producing an enjoyable video and keeping your fathers memory going. (by any chance, did you keep the sun visor with ...''1000 years in sodom''?)
first one i ever seen was in the australian based movie called “Road Games” it was a cop car in the movie .. said turbo on the trunk deck lid. looks like a 4 door mustang notch back with mercury taillights
Thanks for the great response everyone and kind words. The feedback my end has been very cool. I've had calls from some Ford heroes of yesteryear who are happy to see the Phase 5 / 6 legacy live on.
Hey Rob, beautiful car and an amazing story, have you finished the TV series?
I'm sure many Aussies would love to watch it.
Cheers.

What a beautiful car. Well done all involved, that Falcon looks simply awesome.
Thanks
Rob’s a natural story teller. And who better to tell and share Wayne’s legacy.
I've been a Holden guy for 60+ years, but I love this story. Great tribute to his Dad.
I'd stop you and I'm a Holden Man. Magnificent Car and your Dad sounded like a fine bloke.
Your dad was a ford legend and a man of passion. I remember the phase 5 XD in modern motor mag, gave a 12 y.o ford fan something to cheer. Looking forward to your show
I know where 1 of only 2 remaining is. Even driven it under protest but customer told to drive it hear issue to fix.
what a beautiful car! my Pa worked at the geelong Ford plant for 45-50 years! Rip Pa
My veins pump The Lion's Red, but this is a wonderful story of Wayne and the Phase Autos HO - thanks for sharing!
Glad to have known your father when we studied Industrial Design together at RMIT. Still fondly remember a great trip we made to to Sydney in his R series Valiant.

Best looking XE I've come across
Absolutely stunning and the story tops it off
Nice looking XE , I remember Bill Bourke, and to inherit the HO naming rights from your father is awesome. I'm a big fan of the GT HO CAR'S OF THE 70's.

Gorgeous! I had an XE in my youth but it didn't look or go like this. Cheers
Gotta be my favourite model falcon despite what others say, and the phase 6 took it to the next level

Nice one !
When is the series out?
I think the XD and XE are a fantastic looking car the truest of that design concept. They'll only get more recognised in the future IMO.

It's a really nice car son those mags look like custom ghia ford wheels deep dish love everything about this car.

Its great seeing young blokes and ladies driving old cars.

Mmmm deep dish snowflakes, minty fresh!! Props to people who do these things, I take my hat off to the ol man, aussie f yeah
Im a Holden man so i guess we’ll be waiting for the team still developing Sigmas for some competition for these Fords.
Nah great car man💪
What a proper Beast of a car. I'd love to build a tribute model someday. Is there somewhere online where I can get the full specs of this car ?
Love the. Colour, I bet you it’s unique
