Great racing. That HQ was set up real nice. The drivers skills are awesome. Nice pass under brakes. Pulled away in all the right places, leaving the XY too far behind for the straights to be of any help. The winner in this case though, was the full noise Cleveland singing its song. Long live the V8!
God I LOVE this video. Watch all day. Miss so much my childhood watching Holden, Ford, Bluebirds, BMW and Camaro racing around this track. Oh that sound. And that A9X Torana in 79. My earliest memory. Raw the way it used to be and still should be now.
You may not be Moffat but I've driven over the mountain in my xw at 60kmph and i can tell you at race speed i would need new undies after every corner, so i reckon its a fkn ballsy effort brother man, keep up the good work and the epic vids...
Great to see the Holden boys making a race. This video shows just how hard the XY was to drive. It wasn't so easy getting the thing into top at high speed. Going over the crests was like a hovercraft, driver hanging on and trying to feel what the car is going to do, it can even come down to a changing crosswind. Stepping out on the corners, well you just had to try and judge it, tire wear and temp, versus track grip and camber. This driver did very well to bring it home. Got a little over excited on the first lap, then managed to pull himself back together and get it under control. I think this portrays what it must of been like racing one of these things in the early seventies. The XA's were a lot more steamlined and had a slightly wider wheel track, resulting in a vastly more controllable car at high speed. Even flat out in the XA you could steer the thing and put it where you want. In the XY you would just pray to try and keep it on the black stuff.
@@coopsawright7225 And yet the Falcons still crushed them. (I had a Torana, it handled like a bag of shit! Swapped it for an Escort. Haven't sat in a GMH car since. Got a Landcruiser now.)
There's some well sorted vintage iron there. The Ford sounds terrific, even down to the occasional missed shift in the 4 speed top loader, it takes real passion to race something irreplaceable and worth more than a city penthouse flat knacker around Bathhurst. May they roar on for decades yet.
People may see buckets of bolts or priceless cars, but the feeling I get when I see cars like this on the track is like seeing wild horses running free.

@Aussie Pom - Sadly, you are correct. This culture cancelling virus that is spreading around the world is not only a concern but a complete nonsense. The left leaning lunatics and activists have no real interest in changing humanity for the better. They are more concerned with pushing their own dangerous political agendas by demanding that the silent majority conform under the disguise of "virtue signalling" social reforms that are designed to destroy our culture and identity. I have absolutely no idea how "injustice" can be impacted by the demands that are currently being complied with. For example, apparently chess is now a racist game because the white pawn has the first move? We, the silent majority must not allow this madness to continue. Yes, equality and equity for all is not in question but they way these radical groups are trying to effect change is absurd.

I once had a nice clean 173ci, Holden Belmont, it loved to rev, I also found the boot lid very heavy when unassisted.
Could've done with a 6spd, even back in the 70's, which would've saved a lot of engines & fuel use.
OH YEAH , these units would have definatly gone like shit, and been even more exciting
Moffat in one of these at Bathurst brings back fond memories.
What a beast - constantly having to catch it as tries to bite him!
going of this the gt was doing 235s a lap ..the production car 6 hour the amg a45 got 228 ..not bad for the old xy gt ...would love to go back in time and put myself in my a45 back in 1971 ..at back of pack bathurst race ..be fun day
would love to watch the full race
I would rather listen to these beautiful old girls than today's rubbish.
Man, an XY and it has a heater AND a radio!
Fucking Excellent.
Could someone tell me what kind of cars are the orange and black ones? Sorry - yank here, not that familiar with your cars. Awesome driving on the track, though! Assume this XYGT has a cleveland in it? Sounds awesome!
I think they're Holden HQs...
yep and were the fastest 4 production car in the world at the time in 1971

Wow the old Holden Belmont with a 202 in it, taking the kids to church on a Sunday, gave ya a run on lap one..
Theres nothing like the sound of a good 351 Cleveland V8 at full song.
