Imagine driving like that for 161 laps with drum brakes and stock road tires. And four different classes in one race. Heaven. Beautiful to watch and beautiful to listen. Now I want more.👍
The first 7 out of 10 cars to cross the line in the 71 Bathurst were XY GTHO'S. Imagine if this XY started on pole where he belonged instead of having to wade through all the hack drivers and slow cars.
Watching this again in late 2023 and it's still one of the all-time best race videos on RUclips. I absolutely loved listening to the revs flare when he loses traction on the bump on Conrod Straight (hitting almost 150mph), plus seeing him man-handle that thing around the corners and slower traffic. Absolutely epic!
For an Aussie ford fan this is music to the ears, the shaker scoop rocking back and forth on and off the power and the wiper lifting at high speed is as hardcore as it gets. Truly awesome
I loved how the revs flared when he lost traction on the bump on Conrod Straight. I carefully watched the tacho and he was topping out at about 7,000rpm, probably from valve bounce.
Who needs music when you can listen to a wonderful engine like this? This is just so good...you feel as though you are actually inside that car with him. Thank You.
Well Said..What an Adrenalin Rush Just sitting in my comfortable Chair at Home.. I Love Watching Footage Like This 😊😊 For some offroad fun have a look at the WRC 👍 THOSE GUYS ARE INSANE 😂😂😂
I'm lost in the sound of 6 thousand RPM's A symphony of an 8 cylindered harmony's about to begin Mr. Maestro of the orchestra, raise your baton I hear a song. LOL.
Now that's f.....g car racing. What a fantastic sound and watching him actually driving the thing was unreal. These super cars are shit compared to this stuff. No wonder people can't be bothered with follow the leader in V8 when you can watch these blokes actually racing!
J.C. Kohle get outta here! I own a genuine Holden muscle car and this thing would tear an a9x a new a hole. No 308 ever caught an xy. Even hg-hk’s weren’t real competition. As for e38’s and e49’s, they may have been as fast as a phase 3 on 3.0:1’s down the strip, but what about the optional 3.5’s or 3.9’s?! Bill Bourke built them to wreak havoc and that’s exactly what they did. High comp 351’s with solid cams and a driveline that simply wouldn’t break. There’s a very good reason that a real phase 3 is the most expensive Aussie muscle car of them all.
Never get tired of watching this. I love how the "superior and faster by every passing year according to internet pub folklore" charger gets spat out by the HO at about 5.30 💪 the charger would have lasted about 30 seconds if it didn't have so many lumbering shitboxes between it and the HO at the startline. 😊👍
Awesome piece of driving in a legend muscle on one of Australias best tracks, love the shaker pulling to the right when you give to her, can really feel the power and the noise of this beast is remarkable. Thanks for sharing. Australia has the best muscle cars I hope for generations they can be preserved and shown for what they really are. If you ever get to own one, drive it daily and appreciate it, live the dream, don't lock it in a shed hoping one day to make money from it.
One of my favourite yt clips of all time , was watching the 2019 Bathurst and put this on to relieve the boredom of modern Bathurst , imo the old racing was so much better , today's racing is to clinical and like watching paint dry.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. You take the worlds toughest/greatest race track, add cars of wildly differing performance, old cars who's suspension was designed by Satan himself, mix it together with the sound of fury, you have some of the greatest racing ever seen on this planet. These drivers, most of whome would be amateurs deserve the highest respect for their professionalism and ability. This video is 9 mins of pure gasoline heaven.
Probably wont be around much longer in this for.. I know the 1000 will be run rain hail or shine but in what is the question. The cars and the event itself is still a bloody good spectacle.
My condolences for being a holden man 😥🇦🇺, (falcons dead too but at least we still have fords I suppose .......we'll always have Bathurst reruns though
That was / is the best video I have watched on youtube yet. Love the sound as it mumbos down conrod and the backlash that the box makes braking into the Chase is awsum, brings the hairs on my neck up..... Got love the little wave as he passes the leader and the quick adjustments of.the rearview. And the wiper hanging on for dear life down conrod..... Absolutely brilliant!
This takes me back to Mt.Panorama with all it's thrills and excitement. I first visited here in1955. What memories this classic video bringsback for me.
Working your way thru Cortinas, Alfas, Minis, EH Holdens, an old Customline and a Studebaker Lark in an XY GTHO around Bathurst is just fantastic video footage and brings back memories when all those classes used to clutter the track in the first few laps. Great driving with that fantastic surge of power coming onto Conrod and again going up after the first bend.
Mate what a Brilliant Drive not a scratch, and nice bit of correcting at 7.51 the noise was better than expected the beast went very well, that has got to be one of the best runs around the Mountain I've seen .....Thank You...
That's the first bought of car sickness I have had in many years. I watched races right there on Mount Panorama near Bathurst in 1948 involving prewar cars and Morris Minors. I note that the corner at the bottom of Con-rod Straight has been substantially modified, no doubt to avoid the old problem of cars finishing up in the next town!! Thanks for the video, brought back quite a few memories!
Absolutely brilliant !! Was great to see all the older cars I grew up with. Just pure nostalgia for me with the sounds of the HO's v8 and then the slight pause on the up change because of the old manual "H" pattern box. Watching the driver dealing with the basic limitations of the car with no ABS, traction control, computers or high tech suspension/chassis geometry. Awesome to watch the other cars all dicing for a position and seeing the lighter ones go well over the top while losing out on the straights to cars like the GT. I know this is an old upload but thanks for posting. I'll be watching it more than once!
Just came across this, bloody magic, I had and still love the 56, custom line, and couldn’t believe me eyes when spotting one in this race, the guys me new hero.
That was some of the best self controlled, self disciplined, situationally aware driving i've seen, reminiscent of the old Bathurst days of multiple classes all on track at the same time. If they'd had race cam back in 1971-2 that's what it would have looked like from in car. Absolute joy to watch you at work, thanks so much.
Awesome video! Great to see a car thats worth so much in a show room actually being used where it was made to be, on the track. Makes me proud to be an Aussie!
I'm a huge V8 Supercars fan, but i grew up in the days when the Aussie muscle cars started, even had a drive in a phase 3, and those three laps were the most enjoyable 3 laps of Bathurst ever, i was braking so hard coming down conrod straight, bloody awesome, thank you so much, this vid is a keeper, gotta show the young blokes how real blokes drove those beasts !
that was amazing!! the people who raced and steered these cars at bathurst back in the early 1970's had balls of steel, it took a true professional to drive a xy or a ht monaro running thin tyres slipping & sliding everywhere unlike the new FG falcons & VE VF commodores that are idiot proof with the front wheel tubs, love your video, thanks for the share :)
A magnificent drive in a magnificent machine. I am jealous of the adrenaline rush that would have instilled. That 57 Cusso was a bit of a surprise. There were some great machines on track and we were riding with the best when watching!
Good God what a BEAST! Listening to that GTHO at full song and watching it blast around Bathurst is enough to give you goosebumps. I'm surprised the guy driving is able to sit in that race seat with balls that big!!! 👍👍👍😎
Heavenly sounds. Great driving by the whole field. Found myself looking at the collection of talent he passes. From the EH's blowing smoke to the charger and hundreds of cortina's, plus those beautiful little flyweight alfa's that are so much fun. Magnificent beast. Downshifts at end of conrod were like a beethoven symphony.
That was an amazing experience!! Sure I’ve played on RealRacing3 and particularly loved my home circuit. As a kid, I loved the coupe XC etc Falcons, especially that “loverly ass”...actually more like thighs, that protruding section above the rear wheels. 💕it! I never really saw a drivers POW before in this classic. No wonder they did so well. I really wish I had raced go carts as a kid, then stuck with it. My favourite driver will always be Ayton Senna though. RIP. What fantastic, patient driving. Damm that GTHO was fast. I wish I was a kid again!
Wow ... That was pure bliss I put it on full stereo, heaven to my senses . Great driving , he would have won if the charger didn't slow him down , so many cool cars from the greatest era of Aussie muscle and skill . So cool ...
I'm in awe of the skill of these drivers, threading their way through slower traffic that's piloted by drivers of wildly varying ability. I don't know how they do it.
That is definety one of the BEST on RUclips the sound is magic, Great driving skills and patience in the slower trafic and how good it the shaker moving back and forth I must have one......

That was an adrenalin rush. Used to own an HO 72 Ute. In the old days you would jump in, after 12 schooners, and go nuts all the way home. It went like the clappers. Just loved the roar of that big V8.
this is absolutely incredible! these falcons are amazing machines.and this one is in the right hands.this was heaven to watch.thanks so much for uploading this. great great job of driving! loved it all the way through.this could of been 20 minutes and it still would have gone by to fast.
I love the way these guys wrestle with the car going around the track at high speed and then give a casual wave to other drivers for letting them past like it's a Sunday drive.
I only know the track as a video game - 'cos I'm living near Brands Hatch, SE England. To ride in the big V8 was heaven -- seeing loadsa cars from my youth just added to it. Great vid - looks like a great day - well driven Matt Mcgrath (y)
Most days it is a public road, speed limit 60kmh / 35mph. You need to drive it yourself to fully appreciate the racing. Off the mountain, it just drops out from under you. Scary stuff at race speeds. World class circuit.
Wow! Amazing skill on one of the world's greatest tracks - Mount Panorama. As others have said - this video has amazing sound and the camera is in the perfect spot for viewing. I only wish there were a few more laps. Goose bumps to the extreme indeed. Simply awesome!
That’s how old cars were. No chance of falling asleep . You were constantly busy even driving in a straight line. Got an XT falcon, only real change I made to it (other than a 351W) is a rack and pinion steering.👍
its great watching the big GT , but also good watching the other old cars swaying around on their razor blade tyres :) . my dear old mum had one of those 6o`s 1500 cortinas , i can still remember the tyre placard , 24 psi for that nice spongey ride , complete with rubber bushings in the steering linkage/drag link, exciting old cars to drive :).
Excellent footage & sound.Chasing the yellow Charger was awesome then when the time was right to open up the big girl, she just left them for dead, even the right hand wiper wanted to jump off because it was scared towards the end of the straight. Can’t beat the top end torque of the V8’s.
Imagine driving like that for 161 laps with drum brakes and stock road tires. And four different classes in one race. Heaven. Beautiful to watch and beautiful to listen. Now I want more.👍
I'm not thinking he had rear drums.

No music my ass, there was some of the most beautiful music playing the whole time
Amen bro!
Yes nice music a V8 going flat out down the straight
Bloody oath 👍

lol, true
Whaddya mean no music . I heard Ford's, Concerto 351 from start to finish , I think
A symphony of cylinders!
I'm lost in the sound of 6 thousand RPM's
A symphony of an 8 cylindered harmony's about to begin
Mr. Maestro of the orchestra, raise your baton
I hear a song. LOL.
Quite a symphony wasn't it ;)

Not 100% sure but didn't the gt get beaten by a little 6 cylinder Holden at Bathurst sometime

No chance of falling asleep . You were constantly busy even driving in a straight line. Got an XT falcon, only real change I made to it (other than a 351W) is a rack and pinion steering.👍
Loved the wiper arm bouncing, the rearview vibrating around, that silhouette of the shaker, and those sweet sweet sounds.
Love how full noise coming down Conrod the wipers start to lift off the windscreen !
its great watching the big GT , but also good watching the other old cars swaying around on their razor blade tyres :) .
my dear old mum had one of those 6o`s 1500 cortinas , i can still remember the tyre placard , 24 psi for that nice spongey ride , complete with rubber bushings in the steering linkage/drag link, exciting old cars to drive :).
and a boot full of starter motors just in case
Yep. Good ol pizza cutters...was there anybody they couldnt scare whitless???
great footage and amazing driving discipline
Excellent footage & sound.Chasing the yellow Charger was awesome then when the time was right to open up the big girl, she just left them for dead, even the right hand wiper wanted to jump off because it was scared towards the end of the straight. Can’t beat the top end torque of the V8’s.
That was so nice, the tune of that 351 was so sweet. Thankyou!
Amen , that clevo sounds awesome!!!
