    Thanks for sharing this. Trying to convince my cousin that the 8.8 Ford we swapped into the rear of my Jeep Cherokee is not set up correctly. Bought it from a guy who sets them up for various vehicle axle swaps and learned he doesn't do any actual shimming or setting preload, he just "wings it" according to my cousin. I believe there's too much endplay in the pinion because it doesn't have adequate shims or not enough preload on the pinion bearing itself. It makes this exact noise every time you let off the throttle. I'll share this video with my cousin since he insisted he didn't need to drive the vehicle to hear it for himself before we dropped it off @ 4WP for some other work to be done. Last night he told me I should just drive it through the break in period because 4WP tearing into it is going to cost me more money. Uh, I'd rather have them tear it apart and set them up right than have an issue with it down the road, like on the HIGHWAY. Hindsight is 20/20, no wonder the guy sells his 8.8's so cheap. Guess it's gonna cost me isn't it... : (

    Had a U joint break apart when my wife was driving on the freeway in my 1995 dodge ram 1500 5 speed. It broke at the rear axle and the drive shaft was flinging around hitting against the fuel tank which luckily had a steel shield around it since it was 4x4. That protected it but the transfercase was cracked and broken. The drive shaft flew out from under the truck and slid across 3 lanes of traffic. Got it back but man that was a shitshow. Luckily there was very light traffic and nobody got hurt.

      You probably have it fixed by now? Get the solid spacer kit with shims instead of using the crush sleeve to adjust your pinion bearing preload. I had the same problem with mine. I was going to just buy another axle from a wrecking yard. I couldn't find an axle that had good preload. I just ended up rebuilding the one I had. I got rid of the G80 and put a True Track instead. It is great! I don't think my G80 was even working because it doesn't spin the tires pulling my boat up the ramp. It had 130k on it,clutches were probably worn out. That's another problem with the G80. It doesn't even last the life of the vehicle.

    We made a shim on a lathe to go under the U joint that pushed back on the outer pinion bearing. By chance we got a good result after tightening the pinion nut tight.
    The second time it only took a good tightening, at around 400K miles.

    Hey Tom! Awesome Video! Thanks for taking the time to set this up and film it! I have the same problem. Not as bad. Only happens when I let off the gas and coast to a stop. I JUST replaced the Pinion Seal and yoke last month. Which is when I noticed this problem. Its not that bad, however I want to get under the truck and tighten it up. My question for you...Do I need to buy a beam style torque wrench to check the rotation of the yoke after I tighten it down? Or is this beam style torque wrench ONLY useable when the gears are out? I'm going to jack it up off ground and remove tires as well to get less load. Which I have been told makes this job easier. I just need to know if its even possible to determine the torque of rotation with everything assembled. Any input is great! Thank you Tom!!

    • @TomMortonAdventure
      @TomMortonAdventure  7 лет назад +2

      I wish i could provide better input but I had my mechanic do this so I am not sure. You will need the torque wrench to check rotation for sure to make sure its correct. From what i recall he opened the hubs and pulled the axles out a little so that the only resistance was the gears. (This is a 1 ton truck so that's easy to do). I believe it was re-set with the ring in place but originally it was set with the gears out. You will probably get different answers depending on who you talk to, but if you can remove wheels and possible axles I would think you would have enough play to correctly re-set. What vehicle are you working on? Best of luck!

    • @khalil119
      @khalil119 7 лет назад +2

      Tom, thank you so much! Just a few days ago I jacked up the truck, for under there with a buddy. Was able to hold the pinion in place with a woodblock that went from the ground to the pinion. And tried to tighten the nut. We got maybe a half a turn on the thing. And that took a LOT. We were using a 1/2 torque wrench. Took the truck for a drive, still the same. Which I believe means I need to continue to tighten this nut down little by little until this noise goes away. I'm stumped on how to get the nut to move. I was told to not use air because I could damage the crush sleeve if I tighten to far. The way that I'm going now does not require a beam style. We're just getting it back to where it was at and judging by noise and drive.

    Take off the drive shaft under you will see a big nut take that off and clean the threads with some brake cleaner next put lock right on the threads then put the nut back on and tighten to spec reattach your driveshaft and that should fix it up
    There may be damage to the ring and pinion from driving it with it loose and or the crush sleeve may be out of spec or you may have worn pinion bearings but in most cases this fix will work

      @@Steeda04SVT If you can get the pinion seal and front bearing right behind it out, than you can probably pull the crush sleeve out that will be behind the front bearing. However it would be better to just pull the complete pinion out. It's in between the two pinion bearings, located inside the differential itself. It's what holds the proper pressure against each of them (preload). To keep them at the right tension,against the bearing races. Its a b**ch to get the crush sleeve down to toques spec. Usually 20-25 inch pounds. I use a press myself and slightly press the new crush sleeve down. I then take the old crush sleeve to measure with, to make sure you do kit go over the limit. Then once installed its easier to bring to torque spec. Done this atleast 5 times now. Never an issue, if done properly.

    Hey Tom, I've got a 2002 RAM 1500 4x4 that just started making whirring noise out of the blue. Jacked the rear end up and it still makes this noise, (thought it was a bad tire at first) drive shaft is tight. I was told I was better off getting another rear end if the pinion gear is bad. Not going to buy a new one, but I can't see putting a used one in. Can you tell what condition the differential is in without driving it, besides pulling the cover off and tearing it down? Thanx in advance.

    Some mechanics dont want to study how to adjust the diff very well. It gets detailed. They are part changers, Not techies. They skip the details and micro adjustments needed. I had to rebuild my Jeep diff myself by studying hard how to. 2 mechanics, both w over 10 years as mechanics wanted to put an old used unit due "Too difficult to rebuild them". I said,, I will pay you all, but i dont want an old diff in my Jeep. Then for 200 dollars i rebuild it myself. A mechanic must like to study.

    The only way the pinion bearing preload would suddenly loosen up is if the pinion nut starts backing off. You should be able to tighten the nut back up with little force until it bottoms the outer pinion bearing cone out against the crush sleeve or preload spacer/shims. Then stake the nut with a chisel or red locktight the pinion threads to prevent it from backing off again.

      Never had any issues. The crush sleeve/shimmable spacer sets the preload on the pinion bearings. As long as it isn't too tight it's fine. You can re tighten a loose pinion nut without making the preload too tight. Setting up with new bearings the spec for preload is higher than one for used bearings to begin with. I and several other people I know have done it and never had a problem at all.
