  • Netflix's Avatar is a lot of things, some good, some bad, and today we're going to talk about my least favorite part of the show. Aang is the worst, and its not the actor's fault. Let's dive deep into how Netflix's Avatar executed their protagonist badly, creating a flat character who became consumed by internal conflict and lost that genuine feeling of being a kid.
    Thanks for watching!

Katara : Aang do you want to learn waterbending in the season you're supposed to waterbend?
    Aang : Hell Nah

Another issue I had with alot of the characters in the live action that you touched on was the show dont tell. I feel like nearly every scene in the first phew episodes was just the characters (especially Anng) Just talking into the camera directly at the audience instead of the show building on it throughout season 1. Another major issue I had with Aangs chracter was when they brought Gyatso back and he just tells Aang that it was ok that he wasn't there and it was not his fault. In the original they intentionaly had Aang come to terms with this over the course of the first 2 seasons. Instead the live action removed all sense of Aang coming to this conclusion by himself and just has another case of the show just telling us everything.

The thing with the movie is that you can unironically laugh at it for how bad it is. It's so universally hated that not even M. Night himself claims it as one of his own.
This, however? Just feels intentionally insulting. They've taken well thought out, well written, intelligent and complex characters and turned them into the tropeyest things they possibly could.
Aang is no longer a fun loving 12 year old who spends half the first season trying to IGNORE that his is the avatar, instead he is a business minded old man of a 12 year old who "has to finish what the Monks wanted him to do" Yet he learns absolutely no waterbending because "Gyatzos not teaching me!"
Sokka is no longer the pessimistic, overly confident teenage boy whose ego is bigger than it has any right to be, he's no longer sexist, he's an ally now.
Katara is no longer the hot headed, strong willed, eager to help, eager to learn bad ass. She's just....girl.
That's nothing to say of Iroh, who seems to be channeling his Ember Island counter part at all times, Zuko, who is nowhere near as much of an asshole or villain he is for the first two seasons or Zhao, who is just...there.
They had the original series AND Mike and Bryan on their team and they chose to ignore it in favor of "tell, don't show"
Oh and the most egregious part is that these characters ARE NOT FRIENDS. They act more like they're together out of convenience rather than comradery.

"they act more like they're together out of convenience rather than comradery" LITERALLY THIS! Ugh the show did so many things wrong

To put it simple, the writers neutered Aang. He had minimal development as a character. He didn’t water bend once (or seemingly even attempted to). He showed zero love interest in Katara. He wasn’t fun loving or spunky. He lacked any sense of confidence. It was amazing how much the writers subtracted from his character.

Exactly!!! They took away a bunch of stuff without giving him anything new! Just a ton of subtraction

The actor for Aang delivered the line he was given really good but his happy style was barely shown in the live action show, the actor, outside of the show seems really happy and he can probably act with that happiness but the script barely let him

I NEED the subtitles when this Aang speaks. He mumbles and talks too quick with EVERY line!! And there is NO range of emotion!😭

My take is. We have the OG show that already exists within the perfect medium of animation, there’s no need to keep bastardizing yet another beloved property. Time to just leave it as is , and they also need to learn the old saying of show don’t tell. Here’s an example of show don’t tell from one of my favorite video games, in halo CE, we’re shown in 343 guilty spark how scary the flood are as an enemy through the level design and small encounters in the beginning of the level before you enter the underground facility. Then the opposite happens in halo infinite, we’re told that the endless are more dangerous and terrifying then the flood. But we’re not shown why they’re to be feared, why they’ve sided with the banished, why they hate humanity, why the harbingers may or may not be one of the endless. Idk if she is or isn’t. Because I know NOTHING about infinite’s story after beating it at least 3 times. I feel like I’ve learned nothing from this show. I’ll gladly stick with the classic 2D animation thank you.

One thing, I would recommend slowing down your talking speed. It's hard to really reflect and listen to the points you're making cause you'll intermittently start talking really quickly. I'm gonna have to rewatch this a couple time to really hear everything you're saying.

I agree. At times it felt like there was no spaces in between words, made it hard to understand when listening on a speaker.

The sad part is that cutting out all of Aang's "goofy sidequest" moments was *intentional* on the part of the showrunners, who were trying to appeal to Game of Thrones fans.
CONGRATULATIONS. You've annoyed GoT/ASoIaF fans and AtLA fans w/this adaption.
Why the NETFLIX showrunners wouldn't just let Bryke cook (and call in Aaron Ehasz if needed) w/a live-action adaption to bring in the same numbers as the One Piece live-action adaption (where the manga's creator (E. Oda) was overseeing the production to OK any needed changes between animation and live-action)...I don't know.
(Unless the showrunners hated Bryke's work in TLoK (Korra) and thought they could do a better job on the *good* show they created. But (just as an outside observer) even TLoK's worst episodes were better than this....)

This is all great stuff but the delivery needs work. Sounds like you're reading a mandatory essay in front of your class and you just wanna get it over with and go back to your seat. Breathe a little, slow down the pace of the talk. The information your conveying comes across better and gives viewer more time to digest it and form reactions. Everything you're saying is golden and valid and the video edits and screencaps are perfectly selected. I couldn't put my finger on my exact problem with Aang until I saw this. Just gotta work on how stiff you sound.

But true that there is too little of his character details.

I have to disagree, I would have to say that the actors also had a lot to do with why the show wasn't as good as the animation. The actor for Aang couldn't even cry or show emotion.... they had to add fake cgi tears during the scene with Gyatso's "Funeral". Katara had the same expression the whole show... Directors need to go back to yelling at actors and pushing them to really embody their characters/roles.. It felt like they were just reading their lines the whole show. Bad acting/Directing imo.
