Was Half-Life 1 the First Modern Military Shooter?

- From Soldiers, to Helicopters, to Tanks and Realistic Guns, the first Half-Life sported a lot of features that are grounded in reality. This is an aspect I always loved about Half-Life and in this video I'll make some hopefully interesting considerations on the matter.

Delta Force most definitely is not trash. Also, the grunts do use a satchel charge at one point... when the player is crawling through a pipe.
Good point about the satchel charge, you know,.I wanted to include it in the video but then I got lazy and thought that since gameplay wise they dont really use Satchel I skipped it.
I called Delta Force trash because it feels sluggish by todays standard and comparred to HL, but its a good fps relic. I love Comanche 4 though
I really liked how the marines feel like a cohesive squad. The fact they speak a lot, run for cover, and try to flank you make them feel like an intelligent threat. Unfortunately they were a bit too spongy because at the time they couldn’t have nearly as many enemies running around as we can now so they had to make the ones you encountered be tanky. Otherwise combat encounters would be trivial (that’s definitely part of the reason why you have so much more ammo in HL1/expansions than in HL2/Episodes).
Something that’s really interesting is Bungie’s second fps Marathon had reloading. Unfortunately there was no manual reload button and you’d just reload automatically after your clip is expended. Because of that you’ll have to be extra careful with your shots and decide whether or not you want to waste some bullets so you won’t have to reload during combat. This can be kind of dangerous because the sound of gunshots attract enemies. Unfortunately I haven’t played Marathon. I’ve just seen a bunch of videos on it and people who like Halo are aware of it because Bungie reused a lot of the lore/concepts from that in Halo and out the Marathon logo just about everywhere in their games. MandaloreGaming has some videos on the trilogy and it has a truly INSANE story. Since it’s a sprite based game without scripted sequences or cutscenes all of the story is told to you through these terminals scattered around the levels. The main reason why almost nobody has played the trilogy and why it’s not nearly as popular as Doom, Duke Nukem 3D (really need to get around to playing that), Turok, Quake, and other 90s shooters is because the thing was a Mac exclusive in the late 90s (same goes for all of Bungie’s games before Halo). It also invented mouse look but since it’s old the walls will look warped if you turn too far up or down. You can play the whole thing for free using the Aleph One port that makes it work with modern systems. One thing that people have said is consistently bad is the level design and the puzzles.
My thoughts on sprint and aim down sights are its perfectly fine if the game is properly designed around those features. Older game’s definitely don’t work with it because that messes up how they’re played. But if the game is supposed to be a more tactical/realistic game then it fits perfectly. It all depends on the game and if the features are done right. Just like regenerating health, crafting, the two weapon limit, an open world, and other features that are mandatory to modern games. The game should try to have its own identity and if it’s a clone/emulating something actually understand what made they’re copying work.
Spongy is a good term to describe the marines, especially on Hard difficulty. Still, I like fighting them, perhaps they are unresponsive to your bullets, but at least they got a limping/wounded animation.
Yea, I know about Marathon but didnt know it had reloading and that it was Mac exclusive, that explains its unpopularity. I havent played it but ive watched some vids and tbh i bet the level design is that mazy type of thing I dont like.
cool video , hope you are having a nice christmas
Finally a Someone Who helped a scientist to get out of xen
The HD smg looks more like an colt-723 than a m4
Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that Valve made 4 soldier models, 4 black ops models, but only one security guard model for Half Life?
It's because Barney is just too unique as a person
what game do you like more, half life 1 or 2?
HL1 without a doubt
@@supertuna123 yes just because the gameplay is just leagues above hl2
@@urmomisfat3482 and even the story imo. I have made a video about how much I dont like HL2 Weapon and Enemy roster
@@supertuna123 ong same reasons why I like half life 1 more then 2
@@supertuna123 Playing through Half-life 2 using the VR mod now that I have a VR headset, I now like Half-life 2 better. All the environmental stuff you were supposed to feel playing through normally hits so much harder in VR. Zombies are actually scary, the combine are generally actually fun to fight, and the atmosphere of the post apocalyptic city 17 is set on you throughout most of the game I've played so far.
Sorry, Goldeneye 007 had moderately equipped soldiers as foes you could slay, but I'll let it slide. I guess you could argue they don't count because they were soviets, but the soviets had just just broken up just 5 years before 007 released so they hadn't really become a trope yet.
Still watching, never seen that tank that shoots missiles before unless that's supposed to be a Bradley like your saying.
Actually for the time period this game was made in that's a pretty good likeliness of the Abrams though
Good video overall, only nitpick I had was the first thing I mentioned. I like Half-life, Half-life likes me.
You might be right. Goldeneye had real soldiers and sure the Russians might be stereotypes but they are still soldier.
I completely forgot about Goldeneye probably because its a N64 game and never been ported to pc.
Well about the tank, you are right too, I mistakingly switched names (bcs the I looked up Bradley first and since ot was the same colour I thought it was a bradley. Thx for commenting!
GoldenEye?
7:09 HECU do use the satchel charges in one scripted sequence. A soldier throws a satchel into a pipe and detonates it. Gordon must hide below to avoid the funnelling explosion.
Yea man tbh I thought about including that part but got lazy and thought to myself that since they dont use it "ingame" i decided not to insert that cutscene in the video, and I am regretting it cause its a cool sequence
6:12 dude why you shooting hecu in opposing forces
Cause they talk and behave like scared pussies
