I live in the city of Nassau on the island of New Providence in the country of the Bahamas and an EDC knife (folder or fixed) w/ an overall length of under 7 inches is legal by law.
Amen. Learn the local and state laws where you're thinking of carrying, or even just possessing a knife or other weapon. Some places "mere possession" can be more broadly defined than you might think, and some things are prohibited outright or in effect.
I agree that the fear of a switchblade is not logical. However, the switchblade was associated with street gangs much farther back than the 80s and 90s. "The Cross and the Switchblade" was written in 1963 and the movie came out in 1970. Guns were not used much by gangs then, so the switchblade was the more dangerous tool among chains, pipes, socks with metal, etc. The switchblade was associated with gangs, hence the fear of it.
4:10 I just take the pocket clip off. I find the clips snag on stuff (flashlight), break off (fox karambit), and even get the knife pulled out of my pocket (old smith and wesson knife I USED to own).
Dude, really? Title says "Knife Length Laws by State". Came here thinking that someone was finally going to give some easy-to-understand information grouped by states. Instead, video closes with "review your state's laws carefully. Five minutes of wasted time.
Many places allow any size open carry, but not assisted or automatic (switchblades/balisong). Like, mf the fixed blade doesn’t even close it’s always open and is stronger. Idiot politicians.
I don't understand the open carry of single edge belt fixed blades at all anymore. I roughly remember the police station saying the legal limit was 6.5 inches.
The fact people let the state they are in determine what size knifes they can protect themselves with is disgusting. Carry what you feel you need! Trust me, you give them an inch, and they will take a Mile until no knife or gun is safe in their minds.
It’s funny if I glued a utility knife blade to the end of a 4ft 2x4 and used duct tape as a handle material It’d be considered a nearly 4ft knife in some jurisdictions.
In Illinois (not Chicago, but like 98% of the state where we grow corn, fish and hunt deer) the length is not really an issue, the “legality” of your knife is determined by your intent in carrying. A 2” knife is illegal IF the state believes you’re carrying it with ill intentions. On the flip side, a 14” Bowie is perfectly legal as long as you’re not being a dick in some other capacity. I’ve had a perfectly civil conversation with an officer on the street with a 10” knife on my belt and the knife was never even mentioned. Basically, if you get in trouble with it you’re going to be in trouble either way, if you don’t get into trouble with it literally nobody cares, even cops… nobody has time to hassle anyone about having a hunting knife in Illinois… just don’t try to take one through a metal detector. 😂 Caveat #1) “self defense”… in Illinois , hurting someone with a knife is ALWAYS going to be a crime, legally a knife is not a valid self-defense tool (really, it’s not a valid self defense tool anyway). If you cut someone who doesn’t have a knife you will NOT be found to be in fear for your life. If they do have a knife you will both go to jail for fighting, if they have a gun you will die. A knife is a TOOL, 100% of the time, as long as that’s how you regard it, the cops will to. For self defense you need to carry a gun, there is no alternative. Caveat #2) “auto” knives are 100% illegal to own or carry for anyone without a valid FOID card issued by the Chicago State Police.
What about measuring a knife with a skeletonized design with no handle material? Does the entire knife count as the blade? That seems silly, but it would be difficult to determine blade length, no?
I'm a minor and in floyd VA should I be allowed to carry a knife on my belt that is almost 9 inches long blade length would I be allowed to open carry? It doesn't tell me that minors has a limited maximum for open carry the maximum is 1 foot
As an Alaskan I can honestly say....YES! lol It never ceases to amaze me how many people think they'll be living a life just like they saw on TV. Every year we have the migration north...then the very next spring, a huge migration south - once most folks experience their first dark, cold, Alaskan winter, they don't want a 2nd! lol
@@thechameleon77 I'd bet you could blend right in too...being a chameleon and all :) Personally, I love the winter...peaceful, quiet, good hunting, and no datgum mosquitos or biting flies! But 8 months does get kinda long. In truth, the dark gets more people than the cold.
i carry a medford micro praetorian t 3v drop point. and a medford thorn. ,when i'm out in the desert. my medford udt is clipped on to my pack and a marauder H is in my back pocket. 3v drop point. 👍👍👍👍
I carry a 14 inch Bowie, in California, there is no max length, unless you are in Los Angeles, where you can only carry 4 inches max. switchblades, balisongs, neck knives any auto assist are illegal.
I recently switched to a bayonett from a kabar, WA says you can't conceal any " dirk or dagger " which they do not define. But as long as it's out in the open but not menacing your fine
Friend as a older man USA government outlawed switchblade knives because of gang related issues same as a doubled edged blade dagger was also made Illegal this was basically federal law iam 74 I remember lots of hype about this years ago have a great day c r in Texas
As a Californian I was SURPRISED to find out I can carry a Blame knife! In public! But a switch blade is illegal and good luck getting a CCW. This further proves my state is insane
The American people need to put a stop to this nonsense. Every knife length and type should be legal.. period, switch blades are great for women for self defense as most have finger nails and cant open a blade as easy as someone that doesn't have long nails. Luckily I live in Arkansas and every knife type and length is legal...even switchblades.
I stay under 4 inches on a blade just to be safe. Apparently, New Hampshire has no laws concerning knives but I live in Ohio. 🙄 Concerning spring assisted knives and automatics I personally think they make up some silly laws to slap some stupid charge on people for fine money. Tax collection for the city, town, or village you reside in. Like he said, most experienced knife handlers can flip out a flipper just as fast as someone using a spring assist or automatic. Thank you for the video. 👍😎✌️
You can carry anything you want. If it isn’t legal don’t get caught. That simple. The bad guys don’t observe laws so why should the responsible person follow laws others don’t???????????
Important. I’ve personally added a dangerous weapon enhancement to an assault charge…4inches will get you 3-4 😝….in all seriousness be careful and be kind to one another!
The title Leads one to believe you're going to be listing the knife length laws by state
I as well assumed the same,..clickbait!!
I’m glad I read this comment first!
thought so as well

Oklahoma doesn't care about any type of knife as long as you open carry. Concealed carry of any knife is illegal in Oklahoma.

Kind of the "Assault" weapons of their era 😂
Except most gangs today use glocks.
Thank you MKC for such great advise on Carries.

Not much to worry about here. As for federal buildings, I don’t go into dens of iniquity.

imagine living where there are knife carrying laws like 4 inches hahahahaha

We 100% agree! Just like firearms, knives are just tools that are multipurpose!
A knife is a perfectly valid self-defense tool, and it has the track record to prove it.
Montana knife company looks like a great company to work for . You guys are lucky . Good luck to eveyone .
Misleading title. Nothing here I didn't already know.
Texas. No restrictions

I own several switchblades some come out a side and some of them are OUT (out the front). The largest is an 8" SB.. out the side.

Prohibition of switchblades resulted from a bunch of nervous mommies who saw the movie West Side Story.
If a knife is considered a weapon the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

Why so many knives and guns are being banned, movies. Too many politicians watch too many movies.
Who knows!
not really "state by state" in this
What about kitchen knifes?
From what I understand the switch blade was made illegal because it would open randomly in ppl pocket.
