I have been a Chevy mechanic at a dealership for about four years, now. Anytime a Cruze or Sonic comes in equipped with the 1.4 EcotTec for an overheating issue, check the water pump, thermostat housing, water inlet, turbo cooler lines behind the turbo, surge tank or the hose that goes from the water outlet to the surge tank (steam hose). If replacing the outlet or surge tank, always get the steam hose because it always breaks upon removal. We rarely see blown head gaskets, but when we do, the head is sometimes warped.

Chevrolet sold all of the 1.4 liter Cruzes with a 153-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The Cruze was described as having a "small-displacement, power-dense engine", providing you with "a compact car with full-size attitude." Translated into English: a car that you can beat on because you like to hear the turbo spooling up, or a car you need to beat on it because the engine is too small for it to get out of its own way without the turbo. Either way, maximum stress on a too small engine.
"Gentlemen start your engines! Blow your head gaskets!"

The gen2 engine is a huge improvement in usable power, mpg and doesn't have to work nearly as hard. That's partially due to the Cruze loosing almost 300lbs in gen2. 0-60mph is 3seconds faster and it has great passing power.

Oh, and finding a coolant leak without any sort of Clue is very, very difficult. Our Sharan got a coolant leak which we could not trace at all. Engine running fine, no evidence of any coolant leaks anywhere outside the engine.
Water flows from the head out to the front heater. On its way to the front heater, there is a T-piece with a built-in thermostat, which prevents the water from circulating to the back heater until the engine has built up enough heat.
First time I've seen such a thing, but anyways. This T-piece was starting to become brittle and leak. In the end it was leaking so much water we could literally see it.
Solution - due to us being in a warmer climate (South Africa) we did not need that fancy thermostat-controlled T-junction (thermostat cut-off valve), so I asked somebody with the tools to manufacture one out of stainless steel (sans the thermostat part). Built it in, and car's running fine. (Mild steel would've been cheaper, but mild steel will rust, and I don't want to battle with a leaking T-piece again...)
Now I'll need to flush the entire coolant system with clean water, drain it, and fill it up with coolant according to manufacturer specification.

  • @josephwash109
    @josephwash109 4 года назад +3

It seems to me that this is a domino effect situation that goes something like this: 1. Electric cooling fan fails to work on low and medium speed. 2. Coolant overheats and cooks water pump seal and thermostat. Leakage starts. 3. Leakage continues, driver ignores blaring cooling fan. 4. Blown head gasket from low coolant level. Misfires and overheating become apparent. 5. Driver takes car in for service.

Not showing a leak down side of cylinder, so cylinder block is intact. Problem is with Cylinder Head.
Two options:- 1. Blown Head Gasket, or 2. Cracked cylinder head (from water jacket) leaking directly into cylinder or crack leaking into inlet orifice of #1 Cylinder, then down into #1 cylinder. Easiest one to fix is blown Head Gasket requiring head to be planed (trued up, as for sure will be warped from overheat). If cylinder block is warped also, easier (probably cheaper) to replace engine, as planing top of block would require complete disassembly.

  • @averyheaneytheshit

Blown Headgasket sounds like the problem. My 2002 Subaru Outback had 2 bad headgasket issues. One at 171k miles and one at 232,000. I noticed at time there were non visible leaks and external leaks from the coolant. Subaru are known for that problem but I rather own a Subaru than any GM product. Boy I have heard bad reps with them such as overheating issues, rotted frames and burning oil.

I own a 2015 Chevy Cruze and started having issues at 92,077 miles. I drive 80 miles a day to and from work which is 400 miles a week. Started off by smelling coolant while driving. Did not see any leakage under the car on the driveway. Next the engine started to misfire. Then a oil coolant line to the Turbo charger leaked. Also had over heating in the engine. Ended up with a cracked cylinder head. Had to have the Turbo charger replaced. All of these issues happened between 92,077 and 106,215 miles. Plus after almost all of these issues I had AAA tow the car to the dealership I purchased the car from. Total bill for all of these repairs was $6,404.57. I sent a letter to GM about my problems, no help, they gave me a $100.00 voucher. My concern is that the initial problem should have been found during the 92,077 mark. Coolant was leaking into the engine and cause much of this havoc and caused me to become a poorer man, money wise.

    • @michaelkenney2845

What other problems does a cruze have? Lol the list is endless head gaskets that leak. Valve cover gasket leaks. Engine oil cooler tucked in between the 2 hottest places outside of the piston itself, exhaust heat shield mounting studs rust away, broken coolant reservoir, the tiny line that runs from coolant from the far side if the engine over to heat up the throttle body gets brittle and breaks with the slightest touch. The alternator is sized JUST right to generate the absolute minimum voltage at idle RPM needed to run everything thus everything flickers. Transmission can never seem to make up its mind as to when and where it shifts gears from point to point. And this is all that I can think of off the top of my head with my girls cruze with 108k miles on it.I hated this car from the day she got it. The blind spots in that damn thing ya might as well be driving one of thoose tank like cars they drive into the heart of a tornado. Overall the cruze was a car that sums up all of GM's problems and puts a JD POWA award in every owners empty wallet.

I don't know what it is about the Cruze, but I've always wanted one (stick shift model of course) except I wish they weren't so cheaply built with so many components made from plastic when they should have been made from some sort of metal. And don't get me started on the PCV diaphragm that likes to tear forcing you to have to replace the entire valve cover >:(. Seems as if all the money you save on fuel costs just gets used to fix the darn thing all the time. Perhaps I should look more towards getting a Hondoo or a Toyoder.

@@alanfarenden9378 The cylinder heads are fine on the 1.0L Ecoboost, the problem was a hard plastic coolant degas hose cracking and dumping all the coolant out. It's fixed now and affected cars recalled for a replacement pipe. You might be confusing this with the 1.6 Ecoboost which had a problem with cylinder head cracking if run low on coolant which is not really the engines fault, but it was a safety issue as the crack could leak oil out and cause a fire.

I realized there really was no reason to have a wireless camera because you need a screen to view it on. I returned the wireless for this much cheaper one and it works great. As for the leak, flush out the Dexcool, fill it with real antifreeze and a bottle of Zecol Mendtite. I've used Mendtite as a "temporary" fix several times and it's lasted for years. My neighbor is still driving one car 5 years later.
