In Canada, it’s a provincial/territorial thing if you have middle school or not (often called junior high). For example in Alberta elementary school is from kindergarten - grade 6, junior high from 7-9 and the high school from 10-12. Whereas in Saskatchewan, they don’t have a middle school and instead, elementary runs from kindergarten - grade 8 and the high school is from grades 9 - 12

As a Quebecer, let me correct a few things they got very wrong...
First: Poutine (pronounced "POO-tin") does NOT have cheese on it. It has cheese curds. If someone is putting cheese on their poutine, they're not making an authentic poutine -- just some cheap wannabe knock-off. Oh, and to be truly authentic, its beef gravy. Not that brown sludge made from powder.
Second: Schools. I can't speak for other provinces; but in Quebec, we have Primary Schools (elementary) K-6; Secondary Schools (high school) 7-11 (also known as Secondary 1-5); CEGEP (Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, which translates to English as a "general and vocational college") for 1-2 (or even 3) years depending on the program of studies chosen, and the pre-requisites for University (if you choose to go further). And note, everything after secondary school (grade 11) is optional.
Third: Healthcare. This is more a response to other comments here than a comment about information in the video.
Yes, the American system *seems* to be able to provide faster service, that is often only true if you can afford to pay. While you might have to wait a few hours to see a doctor for non-urgent (and I stress NON-URGENT) care at a Canadian hospital, at least you're not stuck with a medical bill that often results in people declaring personal bankruptcy.
I speak from personal experience. I have had both hips replaced, and neurosurgery to repair a herniated spinal cord. In each case, I spent 14 days in the hospital and paid nothing.
After the neurosurgery, I then spent 8 weeks at a physical rehabilitation centre as an in-patient (I lived there and had daily treatments, exercises, and evaluations). Again, no bill to pay.
Then there are all the tests and exams I had pre- and post-op (bloodwork, MRIs, x-rays, etc.); and consultations with specialists -- physiotherapists, ergotherapists (occupational therapists), physiologists, urologists, prosthetists, neurologists, neuro-surgeons, orthopaedists, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, pharmacists, dietitians, etc. To this day, I see my neurologist 4 times per year for treatments to control muscle spasms. Did I get a bill ? Not a one.
Yes, I may have had to wait a few months for each ELECTIVE / NON-URGENT surgery; but better that than be stuck with medical bills in the tens of thousands of dollars that I might never be able to pay off. I can't imagine what I might have to pay had I been in the US.
As for URGENT or EMERGENCY care... arrive at a hospital with a heart-attack or any other life-threatening conditions and you're rushed into treatment or surgery immediately. I'm sure that happens every day at hospitals in the US, but so do bankruptcy-inducing medical bills.
If its all the same to you, I'll pay the higher taxes, thank you very much.

But the American health care system offers more innovative/experimental treatments/advanced treatments than treatments that may be offered in Canada. The US are innovators, creating new ways to cure someone of whatever needs to be cured. While the innovation is great, the people in America also need to be looked after and have free health for everyone

That's because poutine is really a Quebecer tradition. We do take it seriously over there. I grew up on it. My parents would drive for hours in the Summer time to get to a small town poutine shop that made it with green pepper. It was that important. We had to drive for three hours to get the perfect poutine. And when I moved out of Quebec to English Canada, the Quebecer friends I made over here and I would hunt for the best poutine restaurant that made it the way we do at home. Same thing with smokemeat, every true Montrealer knows the best one is the one from Maine restaurant on St Laurent. My dad made sure to take me to several smokemeat restaurants so I would know where to find the best one.The food stuff is not completely wrong, it's just not really Canadian, it's Quebecer and Quebecer culture is just a different culture than the rest of Canada.

Yup. Alberta and Newfoundland have middle schools but they call them "junior high" and they are usually grades six through nine. I know of some exceptions due to school crowding issues where an extra grade is either included or not. Maybe there are no middle schools in southern Ontario. I think a lot of American opinion on Canada is based on that area?

The elementary schools in my area are grades kindergarten-5, and the high schools are grades 9-12, just like the American ones. But, that’s seems to only be in my area, people I know that live outside my area usually don’t go to middle school or go to a shorter one.

That's because hockey is ridiculously expensive. All the equipment, plus fees to the program to pay for ice time etc, can add up to thousands of dollars per year. I stopped playing hockey at 15 because it was about 1/10th the cost to play both basketball and football in high school vs the cost of hockey alone. (plus I was just a lot better at those sports lol)
Hockey is still the national sport by a mile. More and more people can't afford to play, but the fan base is still huge.

''like statically basketball has more youth participation than hockey in Canada''
If that is true, it's only because it costs less, like soccer. Basketball does not very often lead you to a career . The US has the monopoly of professional players in basketball, football, baseball but not in hockey. The largest proportion of hockey players in the NHL are canadian born players and the NHL's list of the greatest stars ever are for the most part canadian born players. When I was a kid in the late fifties and early sixties, canadian born players constituted the totality of the NHL's 6 teams until Thomas Mark "Tommy, The Bomber" Williams (April 17, 1940 - February 8, 1992) became the first American player to regularly play in the National Hockey League since the retirement of Frank Brimsek in 1950.

The fact of Canada not having middle schools is untrue. I was born and currently live in New Brunswick and I went to elementary school from kindergarten to grade 5, middle school from grade 6 to 8, and high school from grade 9 to 12 before starting university.
The system you laid out does exist here but is a lot less common (at least in the Atlantic provinces) and actually goes K to 8 for a combined elementary and middle and then normal high school after that.

Wrong, healthcare in the US is expensive but of good quality if you can afford it. Canadian healthcare is social but not guaranteed. Public wait times can be ridiculous so you might die of disease before you can be treated depending on what illness you have.

@J P "All forms of health are treated in a timely manor" That sure is a nice fantasy, the problem is that it is just that. Specialist physicians surveyed report a median waiting time of 21.2 weeks between referral from a general practitioner and receipt of treatment-longer than the wait reported in 2016, which was 20 weeks, the longest ever recorded since the Fraser Institute began tracking wait times for medically necessary elective treatments. Canadian wait times are among the worst in the world.

    • @jamesshepherd9390
      @jamesshepherd9390 6 лет назад +1

@J P Unfortunately, personal anecdotes are not arguments against actual data and statistics. See, I can use one to, because it took several months to get my referral to an endocrinologist. Also, I don't see how statistics from the Fraser Institution are "misleading online articles". Anyways, Canadian healthcare is mostly good, especially in terms of quality, I'm just arguing that it isn't necessarily the glorious system that I have personally seen may others claim it to be. Healthcare is a mess in the US, but I ultimately believe privatization would be better (if done right) for both financial and moral reasons.

Just adding something about our education system. I was born in 1968 in Toronto, and still live here, but when I was in school we did have middle school, grade school was kindergarten to grade 6, middle school was grade 7 and eight, and high school was grade 9 to 13, then university. As far as I know middle school still exists in many areas, so you might want to check your facts about that. And yes there are quite a few differences between our two nations, but I think our similarities far outweigh any differences we may have, neither country wants to be mistaken for the other, because we want our own cultural identities of course, totally understandable. But having gone to the states literally hundreds of times, I got to say that there’s not really that much of a difference between us, right down to what we eat and where we eat, what we do for a living, how we celebrate the holidays, we have so much in common it’s amazing. The one big difference is your constitutional right to be as openly racist as you want to, where is here or you can get ticketed or arrested for being openly hateful, and secondly Canadians don’t like the idea of everyone having a gun, we don’t need it, it’s just not a part of our culture, especially in the big cities. But other than those two things, I feel perfectly at home every time I go to the states, but I’m biased, I have a lot of family in the United States, so it is really a second home to me, Manhattan being my most favourite place of all, I just wish I could afford to live there, it’s a tad expensive, but it’s not cheap here in Toronto either, eventually we’re going to have to form a third country, because no one Will be able to afford to live in either one! Sorry for what it’s worth, 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
